    Simple Questions - April 30, 2021

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I built my first PC six weeks ago and it's incredible.

I typed a million questions into Google when buying and building and this page was always there, every question followed by a great, informative answer.

This is just a thank you. My grades are up, I'm happier and now own a great PC.

    Appreciate you all :)

I built my GF a low-end gaming PC for $300 using mostly secondhand parts

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:51 PM PDT

I've got a fairly high-end system (R5 3600, RTX2070) that my girlfriend loves to commandeer to play The Sims 4 on. It's her favorite game but neither her old HP laptop nor her Macbook can play it well. Experiencing it on a gaming PC was eye-opening and she refuses to go back to that.

She's a student(future teacher) and is nearly done with her semester so to celebrate I wanted to build her a rig that will let her play on high-ish settings with a good framerate at 1080p. Something like a machine that would have been considered midrange circa 2014 but with a few modern conveniences added. Something nice for her, but also so I can get my desktop back :)

After a couple weeks of scouring Facebook Marketplace, this is what I ended up with:

    Photo Album

CPU, stock cooler, MoBo, 8 GB RAM: This came as a bundle. A guy on FB was selling the bones of his old gaming PC for $100. 4c/8t Sandy Bridge means we're in business. It idled around 70C in initial testing so I re-pasted it with some Arctic Silver I had leftover. Now it chills at 40C. This also included a case and a SATA cable. I ended up using the cable but ditched the case in favor of a newer one.

4 GB RAM: Another FB find. This was supposed to be 2x4GB but one of the sticks was DOA :(. Not sure if I fried it or not. He handed it to me with no packaging. Oh well. Benchmarks didn't show any slowdown from having a single-channel extra stick so in it goes.

Case: Finding this felt serendipitous because I was looking at buying it retail for it's smaller size and price point. I responded to a 17-week-old-and-forgotten-about listing on FB and got lucky. The materials feel pretty cheap, because it is!!! But it breathes well, looks ok, and has a decent front panel. It was missing some screws and whatever that shielding next to the PCI slots is.

Speaking of which, add $6 to that total cost for a USB 3.0-to-2.0 header convertor since the motherboard is too old to have 3.0.

SSD: Here's our first modern touch. A must for snappy performance. I ended up buying this retail. Storage is cheap right now and there weren't any local deals. It's mounted behind the mobo because the case was missing its 2.5" mounting screws.

GPU: From FB. I didn't feel good about paying $80 for a 750ti but that's the GPU market right now. At least the seller re-pasted it. It's strong enough for The Sims 4 and it runs super cool and quiet to boot.

PSU: Alright I know not everyone can get one for free. This was a gift from my cousin to whom I gave some parts for his gaming PC last year. It helps to build up some good karma. It's non-modular so I had to stuff a lotta cables in the back of the case.

Wireless adapter: I went a little crazy here because I wanted WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 capability. Modern conveniences right? For a true barebones budget you can find USB dongles for cheaper.

(Not shown: I tried out a cheap Chinese PCIe USB controller to connect the front panel for true USB 3.0 but it would always wake the machine up from shutdown and sleep after 3 seconds. Oh well.)

    Performance

It scores about 4000 in Fire Strike and 12500 in Night Raid. More importantly, it stays around 50-70 FPS in Sims 4 with a few visual effects turned down. For shits and giggles, I fired up Doom 2016 and managed to get about 35 fps on 1080p high in Vulkan lol

Web browsing and general desktop stuff is very responsive, not much slower than my own machine. Overall I was kinda blown away by how well this 10 year old processor is holding up.

This thing ended up being a lot of fun to assemble. I really liked finding a use for old hardware that might have gone to waste otherwise. And it was nice going through the build process without having to stress over the large dollar amounts that comes with new tech.

I'm planning to give it to her after her finals are done and she has the time to play.

    Thanks for reading.

PS if anybody knows where I can find a cover for that open space next to the PCIe slots I'd really appreciate it

PC lives in my entertainment center so it is quite cramped, should the front (most open) side be an intake or an exhaust?

    My PC & entertainment center

My pc lives in my entertainment center so most sides don't have much space around them. However the front is pretty much open to the fresh air. I'm not sure whether I should set up the front fans to be an intake or an exhaust? Which (if any) would provide better cooling performance?

    Why won't it turn on?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I was spending my whole afternoon building my first rig. I got to the point where I mounted the Mobo into the case and connected the psu. I found the 24 pin and the cpu cables, too. I have an Asus prime z490A motherboard and a gigabyte modular psu. I can't seem to find a 4 pin cpu power connector, only 8 pin ones, but the manual says the 8 pin only is enough. Is it right?? So the problem is: the motherboard produces every color possible: it emits rgb. But the cpu fans, nor the case fans start running. My power switch on the case doesn't do anything and even the power leds don't turn on. The motherboard has an on board power switch which emits green light, meaning it has power. The indicator leds don't show any problem at the cpu, ram or vga. I don't know how long should i press the onboard switch. I tapped it, pressed it for a sec, held it for even 10 seconds but nothing happens. Sometimes a clicky sound comes from around the psu. I don't know if it's true or maybe I'm just starting to get crazy... Please help me!

Is it worth it to build a PC if you have a budget of $2500?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:11 AM PDT

My friend wants my assistance in building their first PC (Budget stated in title). I warned them, however, against it stating the current market is not very accommodating right now for optimal spending on a PC. My question is: If they're willing to spend all the cash and does not particularly care that that market is scuffed, should I just entertain their want to build a PC. I'm currently debating this to myself right now but I'd like to extra input from other individuals aside from myself.

(PC Specs for PC in-question) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bkp2nL

(I checked the rules, I shouldn't be breaking any rules so here's to hoping I don't get bonked.)

I bought a new radiator as the one old i had was too short for my build, but i am looking to see if the placement i have now is fine or if the hoses need to go downwards and not up. Thank you

Is this a decent used PC ?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:13 PM PDT

Hi I really wanna get back to PC gaming and need a good decent pc for some of my college application but building a pc is quite expensive nowadays . I have been looking for some deals I found one for $400 CAD ($325 USD). Here is what the PC looks like Pc - Google Photos . It's a compact case. The specs are i7-3370K CPU, GeForce GTX 1650, 32 GB ram, 512 GB SSD. I am new to pc stuff and only thing I notice old is the CPU and the case ( which I might get a case and switch the parts for like $30 ) . Also I am gonna ask if ram is ddr3 minimum not ddr2 and ask him to test the pc in front of me when I go to get it (if I get lucky)

Though it does not have a Wi-Fi built in, which will probably be the sad part for me cause few years ago when I had a pc with no Wi-Fi built in, I tried using Wi-Fi usb adapters and wifi extender which both sucked ( I was using a android phone as wifi hotspot which was better than usb adapter/extenders) . I might try the PCIE WIFI CARD this time . Ethernet is better but I will have to get like a 50 ft ethernet cable which is not practical for me. Do you guys think this TP-Link AC1200 PCIe Wireless Wifi PCIe Card - 2.4G/5G Dual Band Wireless PCI Express Adapter, Low Profile, Long Range Beamforming Heat Sink Technology, Support Windows XP/7/8/8.1/10 (Archer T4E): Amazon.ca: Electronics wifi card will be fine . I heard wifi card are better than adapter or wifi extenders. I just want a consistent wifi I don't really need the full high crazy speed.

    ASUS Prime Z590-P LGA 1200

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:04 PM PDT

In the market for a semi-budget friendly motherboard and CPU. This motherboard seems to have everything feature-wise I need for a very good price, on top of being new. Am I missing any downside here? (Ex. No idea what -p stands for, etc). A 490 from last generation seems to be higher in price even by about $60.

Will likely pair with 11600k or 10600k depending on recommendations.

Finally pulled the trigger for a i5-11400 build, suggestions welcome for a first time build after 20 years!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:19 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

After a long search and waiting time I finally purchased the following parts. Back in high school I built up a PC or two, the latest one had an Athlon 1000 CPU ! So, I guess many changed since then but I'm excited to build a PC for me after all these years. I will add a GPU later to the build, when the prices get a bit more reasonable, since then I will use it mostly for home office with two monitors. I will go through the build help docs as well, but I would like to ask your suggestions like other resources for pc building (youtube channels, online guides etc.), whether an antistatic mat necessary or shall I first build everything on the box of mobo before installing inside the case etc. Please give no suggestions about changing the parts, they are already delivered.

CPU: Intel Core i5-11400 2.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black 55 CFM CPU Cooler

Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING B560-PLUS WIFI ATX LGA1200 Motherboard

Should I be worried about "Hotspot" temperatures on GPU?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:37 PM PDT

    Hey,

Recently built a new Desktop. The case has only 2 fans and I took a look into the HWMonitor and I noticed there's the GPU temp, along with the Hotspot parameter.

As far as google helped me, this is a new sensor that basically tell you the highest temp on the whole GPU.

    I got an ASUS GeForce RTX 2060 DUAL EVO O6G 6GB GDDR6 192-bit.

It looks like this for me after playing some Apex Legends on high settings: https://i.imgur.com/ztzWael.png

Should I be worried about the temperatures shown on Hotspot, considering the max temperature (according to NVIDIA) is 88 degrees Celsius?

A solution to this would be adding more fans to the case, right? I got 3/5 slots free, but I barely spent a fortune on the build...

    Scythe Fuma 2 installation

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:00 PM PDT

As the title says I'm using scythe fuma 2 cpu cooler, now After a bit of work I got it on my motherboard. But the screws that you screw in last. (2 middle ones already connected to the cooler) have been screwed in too, but not all the way. As I was scared to overtighten it.

It's screwed in with about 2/3 of the layers? (the round circles going from top to bottom on the screw) with 2/3 layers visible still. Is this normal? Or should I screw them in completely. Like I said theyre already pretty tight in my opinion.

I got everything working except the lights for the case fans, they work but don't change color and I am not sure how to make them change color. Was wondering if anyone had any idea if I needed to connect something that I hadn't.. or if I just messed up while building.. anything helps! Thank you:)

    Evidence of bad mother board?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:52 PM PDT

    Specs:

mobo: MSI Z590 PRO WIFI LGA 1200

cpu: Intel Core i9-10850K Comet Lake 10-Core 3.6 GHz

    ram: Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200

    hdd: Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 2TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 3D2, QLC Internal Solid State Drive

    power supply:EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GA, 80 Plus Gold 650W

    GPU: None (onboard graphics)

    A) A few times on reboot, it has "browned out". E.g. it turns on, graphics display for a split second, then fans shut down and nothing happens. Once in this state, even on reboots you cannot get out of the "brown out". In order to get it to boot, I must pull out the power cord and plug it back in. This is symptom of an issue with either the power supply or the motherboard, right?

    B) I was trying to install fedora. On boot from usb I get the following message:

[ 0.227974] mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged

    [ 0.227979] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 6: ee20000000

    [ 0.227983] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef20300 MISC 3880000086

    [ 0.227991] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:a0655 TIME 1615408240 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode e2

This is not OS specific as similar messages occur with ubuntu usb.

    C) There are strange messages about being unable to access usb and wifi. Perhaps this is just due to a lack of drivers

    D) Ubuntu gets into a loop attempting access usb devices.

    E) I have run memtest -- thus far no errors. I have also tried to booting off one stick (tried each stick separately). This didn't solve the issue.

Is this symptomatic of an issue with the motherboard? CPU? Is there a secret setting in the MSI bios that makes it work? Is this because my PS is inadequate or that I dont have a plug for cpu pwr 2? (I doubt it)

    Migrating OS

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:03 PM PDT

So a few days ago i asked about moving my OS to a new SSD and i did get some helpful answers but i was wondering,

Would i be able to unplug the drive that already has windows and install windows to the new drive, after i'm done with that can i just plug in the old drive and set the boot order to run the SSD first?

Most of the thing is that i still want to use the old drive but i really want to only move windows to the new drive.

    Does this make sense?

To XMP or not to XMP. Is that the question? Ofc not. But save your money for ram and spend it elsewhere.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:08 PM PDT

    Intro: I love my RAM
I kept hearing how much Ryzen loved fast memory. So when I put together my new machine I spend a lot(!) of time searching for the RAM.
I knew my final choice was a gamble as it's wasn't on the QVL list but I crossed my fingers and held my breath; G. Skill Ripjaws 4000Mhz, cl 15, 1.5v
Turns out it was too much and I couldn't get them to work. BIOS kept booting and then reset to defaults. Luckily I was able to return them no hassle and "settled" on; G. Skill Trident Neo 3600Mhz, cl 14, 1,45v
They are lovely. XMP worked straight away. Everything stable with my FCLK running 1800Mhz. I'm getting "Excellent" scores in Time Spy and my PC is above the average cut. All with no OC. I was happy.

With my build complete (waiting on a 3080), I now spend my time here helping people and vicariously reliving the experience through your builds.
Which finally leads to my point of this post. The classic of missing performance by not setting XMP. So for funsies I thought I test it myself.

Experiment: XMP; on vs off. Time Spy. 1440p.
I ran Time Spy several times on both settings and I couldn't believe how little it mattered.

    Specs: 5800x, Auros Elite (f33g), 1080ti.

My timings and example of result
A measly 1,5-2% performance between 2133Mhz and the real 3600 with tighter timings. I know that GPU is by far the biggest factor but still it shocks me how little RAM speed apparently matters.
Had I still my 3200Mhz, cl 16, from four years ago I bet I wouldn't notice in game.
    Conclusion
My build is overkill and the 320$ I spend on RAM dwarves in other silly decisions; like getting a M.2 exclusively for games even though I already had two regular SSD's and installing nine(!) Noctua fans in hopes my pc will someday fly me to the moon.

But for (almost) the rest of you out there. Please do not spend more than 100$ on RAM and allocate it all towards the GPU. My RAM is shiny but not worth it.

    Warzone low fps

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:57 PM PDT

    i7 10700k Trident 16gb 3200 Tuf 3080

I play 1440 ultra and i usually jump 140fps to 170fps. Today i played and im capped at 138.

My cpu usage was 50ish and gpu jumped from 70% to 100 at times.

Im not sure if there was an update or my hardware is holding me back. Ive read posts about people getting 175fps+ on 1440 ultra.

Upgraded ram, monitor loses signal occasionally

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:34 PM PDT

Like the title states, I upgraded my ram from 2x8GB G.Skill Ripjaw 288-pin DDR4 3200 to the exact same brand but 2x16 GB sticks of G.Skill Ripjaw 288-pin DDR4 3200. With the new sticks in, my monitor will occasionally go black and say "No Signal" while the PC stays on and continues to run and sound continues to play from whatever I had running in the background. Put the old sticks back in and have not had this problem since.

    Any ideas?

    MOBO - ASRock B450M/AC

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600

    GPU - Radeon RX 5700
