Hiring someone to wire my townhouse with Cat 6 cost Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:11 PM PDT Is $350 too much to pay for someone to wire my townhouse with Cat6 and install two ethernet wall plates? I don't have an attic or crawlspace, just an unfinished basement if that makes any difference. [link] [comments] |
Using 2nd router as wifi AP, can't get IP address Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:09 PM PDT Hello, I'm trying to configure an old router as an extra wifi access point with its own SSID. I'm following roughly the same thing as this: https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/how-to-turn-an-old-wi-fi-router-into-an-access-point/
However, when I connect a device to the extra SSID, the device doesn't get an IP address. So it's not receiving DHCP from the main router. I can connect to the configuration page of the old router from other devices in my LAN, so that part is working at least. An I missing some setting somewhere? [link] [comments] |
Any reason why I shouldn't get two switches instead of one big one? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:47 AM PDT I'm just working through networking for my new house with a bit of future planning. I'll be having approx. 18-20 ports dotted around various bedrooms, 5 Ubiquiti APs (I've decided to continue using Ubiquiti) and at most 8 POE cameras. Total ports around 33. Now I can see when I get the cameras I'll be getting an NVR set up as well, instead of saving the video streams to a server. So those cameras will be powered by the NVR which will then connect to a switch or hub. The 5 APs will need POE The remaining ports won't need POE as it'll be used for Sonos speakers, PS4/5, PCs etc. I was looking at 48 port POE switches and as I'm sure most of you are aware they're very expensive, so I thought if I just buy an 8 port POE switch and then a 24 port non-POE switch I'd save myself a lot of cash. Both the switches will be unmanaged so I don't need anything fancy. Are there any real issues with running the setup this way? [link] [comments] |
Port Forwarding to a PC that is offline? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:24 PM PDT Hi All, A bit of a silly question but wasn't able to find much while googling the topic. Normally if you are running e.g. a webserver at 192.168.0.100 that is port forwarded to the router, then any external requests should be able to access the web server. But what would happen if the webserver is currently offline (as the PC has been turned off)? If someone tried accessing your public IP on port 80/443, would there be a security issue as the device that should be responding to the requests is offline, or would the connection request just be refused since the web server is offline and there would be no security issues involved? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:08 PM PDT Currently have Xfinity 1.2 gig speed. Currently, I have one long rg59 coax outside, from the oragne xfinity cord, straight into modem, and want to buy a better cable since mine is becoming pretty frayed. There are no f-connectors, compression fittings, or splitters in this setup, unless advised otherwise.
Thank you for any help with ANY of these questions. Looking for answers to any of these. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Asus wifi 6 AX3000 Dual band RT-AX58U Speed issues Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:56 PM PDT Hello guys I just today bought an ASUS AX3000 dual band RT-AX58U Smart WiFi 6 (802.11ax) router. I have pretty much an average internet provider (Spectrum) for which we have a centralized modem/router that I've always been using. The wifi speeds for that are usually around 150mbs download and 11.2 upload on my phone. This router is advertised to be able to do way more than that (though I know I'd need to upgrade my internet to fully utilize the full power of this thing) but for the time being it won't even do hardly 80mbs download. Does around the same upload speed at about 11.2. Our internet is capable of around 300mbps wireless or so I've been told. Wired from the spectrum modem/router to my PC I got well over almost 300 mbps download. Wired to the Asus Wifi 6 router it did about 80. Can someone help and let me know what I'm doing wrong or why this may be happening? Thank you guys hope I was detailed enough. [link] [comments] |
Router Suggestions to Bridge with Coda Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:52 PM PDT My Hitron Coda-4582 has been the bane of my existence for the last few years. I thought my ISP was just really bad but after having the router updated and replaced a few times with my ISP claiming my speed was showing very high on their end but barely working on mine - I've realized I need to bridge it. They even checked the internet cables running down my street and supposedly fixed them but I'm having the same issues for the last few years - wifi doesn't work in certain areas of my house and the speed is awful. What router would you recommend I bridge with my modem? I've tried to look around on the sub and googled a lot but I'm still not familiar with the differences between the routers and what different specs mean. [link] [comments] |
Home Network Unifi Help Needed Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:20 PM PDT I'm trying to set up my home network with subnets and IDEALLY VLANs with the intent of separating IoT, guest, and trusted devices. So far my current setup is as follows: ISP --> Arris Surfboard SB8200 --> USG-3P --> Netgear 8port Switch -->
None of this set up so far has the security set up the way I'd like it, due to the fact that everything is allowed to communicate with everything else, but it's what I've got so far. All networks are using .1.199 as the DNS server now that I've set up the PiHole in a container via Docker, and the Pihole is set to conditionally forward traffic back to the USG at 192.168.1.1 over 192.168.0.0/16 subnet. I'd like to start forwarding all traffic to that pihole container, however I want to also set up subnets for each device type. The current network setup via the Unifi Controller is as follows:
When I set the guest wireless network to use the GUEST network, no devices can connect to the wireless network as it appears that devices cannot obtain an IP, so I'm assuming there may be something wrong with my guest network settings. As soon as I switch the network that the trusted wireless network uses back to the trusted network, any wireless device can connect to it without issue. Unifi Controller comes baked with some firewall rules which allow DNS over 53 using TCP and UDP, so I cannot imagine that would be the cause but at this point I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
New ISP, phone on 5g gets more upload than my desktop connected with cable? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:01 PM PDT Hello, i just got a new ISP installed, and im having an issue where if i do a speedtest on my phone with 5g, I get 200/100 without issue. But if i do it on my desktop PC with a direct cable, I get 200/60ish. Already tried reinstalling drivers, updating drivers, using another cable, checked network status to see if its detected as 1Gbps. A while ago i had another ISP that gave me symmetric 200/200, and it worked before desktop showed speedtest as it should. Had issues with the service for months, until they pushed me to swap ISP. So i know the desktop was able to get the symmetric speed. What do you guys think could be issue? Is my Realtek Integrated port be failing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:57 PM PDT I'm about to lose my mind i currently have my internet connection drop once every 10-20 minutes. Either i lose my business call or i'm mid game and my connection drop causing me to leave the game. I was originally having this issue on a Linksys EA9500 but have since upgraded to the hEX S. I'm not super familiar with the mikrotik troubleshooting methods. I do have the dude server/client installed but i'm unsure on how i could possibly track down why my connection is dropping somewhat consistently. A note that i've had a technician come out to debug the issue and after being here for an hour + he did a few tests for dropped packets between the trunk and my modem end point and didnt see anything. I'm at a loss on what to do and my ISP isn't seeing anything wrong on their end after calling 6+ times the past week. [link] [comments] |
Should i get an eero or something else? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:00 PM PDT I am living in a one bedroom 900 sq ft apartment, and I want to purchase a modem and router instead of renting a gateway from Comcast. My internet plan is currently set to 200 Mbps but I will probably upgrade soon. I am thinking about getting the MB8611 modem, but I am having trouble deciding on a router. I hear wonderful things about the eero 6, but I don't know if it is worth ~$300 for the two given my space. I have some smart devices that I want to connect to a guest network, and I want to be able to play some VR from time to time. Would the Archer A7 be sufficient instead, or what about the older eero? Security and reliability are very important to me, and both seem to be receiving a steady flux of firmware updates. Any recommendations? I am also seeing that some people with an eero router may be having issues with Microsoft Teams, and I am also wondering if this is a real issue or not. [link] [comments] |
Looking for switches appropriate to connect outbuilding to home network Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:08 AM PDT Hi, I've got a detached garage that I'm looking to connect. I'd like wifi out there, as well as a hard-wired connection for my gaming rig. Garage is maybe like 20' away from the house, but the short hop is all covered in concrete. There's existing conduit that carries power, which I plan to run fiber through. Probably single mode. What I'd like to understand is what kind of equipment I need to hook it up to my existing network, basically the ethernet ports on this ont that centurylink provided. i'm thinking i need
does this sound right? anyone have any product recommendations? e.g. for the switches, does it make sense for me to get two mikrotik CRS305-1G-4S+IN. 10gig seems cool, but realistically 1gig is fine for me so long as i can upgrade all this junk easily in 5-10 years, hence single-mode fiber. Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:28 PM PDT I'm helping a friend install networking in his new construction condo. The builder put in 4 wire cable, which I assume is primarily meant to be for phone. But the builder also ran it behind the TV location, as you would with RJ-45. Am I seeing just phone wiring, or is the intention to also have the option of running data? [link] [comments] |
Just wanting to make sure I have this designed right Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:25 PM PDT I am getting ready to move into a new house and before the house is full of stuff I am having someone come in and add network jacks to all of the rooms for hardline connections when I want them. The ISP will be Verizon and the box is in the basement. I have no intention of using their router. I will have internet only because, well.... cable sucks. The network jacks will all be on the main floor. I have a set of Netgear Orbis that will be used on the main floor to handle the wireless network. Here is where I need the sanity check. Verizon Line in the basement > "Old" Netgear R8000 with wireless disabled > Neatgear 24 port unmanaged switch that all of the network jacks will terminate to. The Orbi routers will connect into one of the wall jacks on the main floor One at each end of the house) to provide wireless. This is stuff I already have and would prefer to use this vs buying anything new. Also at one of the network jacks I will need to connect another 8 port switch to handle my desk which has a gaming pc, unraid server, and a few laptops that I hard line in. Will this work as I think it will? Anything I should keep in mind for this setup? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:21 PM PDT My ISP (RCN) says that they have issues with the MB8600 and tell you to avoid it if possible. It's the only modem they have listed as an issue with. I wanted to stay with Motorola and was looking at the MB8611. I know that has 2.5G port on it but wondering if its any different hardware/firmware wise to where it might work then. I contacted RCN and they said they do not know which is not helpful lol. Just wondering if anyone knows or has insights on it. [link] [comments] |
Need better options for high speed interent where I live. Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:51 PM PDT I live in a trailer park and currently have Frontier. It's awful. I pay $112 a month for 1mbps. The wiring is ancient in the park and no company will bother spending the money to lay fiber optics. The only other option for me is Viasat, but my family dealt with them before and I was not satisfied. Are there any other options for me? Is it possible to get a hot spot through a cellular service? Has anyone tried Unlimitedville? https://unlimitedville.com/ I just need help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:14 PM PDT I don't know much about networking. I have a 600mbps down 15mbps up plan, and I get that while hardwired. I have a Motorola mg7700 24x8 gateway, and use the 5ghz wifi connection when inside my house. My wifi speeds are 58mbps down and 15mpbs up. I never really use wifi so I never really noticed how much slower it is, and even then these speeds are fine for most things besides downloading. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my set up. [link] [comments] |
Equipment needed for faster than gigabit Internet Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:49 PM PDT So Xfinity (Comcast) recently upgraded their gigabit service in my area to 1200 megabits down. Now as far as I understand to take advantage of this new speed on more than one wired client I'd need to get all this equipment. I just wanted a sanity check or if there were other options that make more sense. I'm not really interested in building a pfSense box since space is limited, unless there was a solution like the fitlet2 which supported faster than gigabit speeds. I know possibly spending more than a thousand dollars for 200 extra megabits doesn't make sense for most people, but I use my Internet all day for both work and personal use and can personally justify the cost if I decide it's right. 1.) New Cable Modem with a out port faster than 1000 megabits : ARRIS Surfboard S33: (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08FMSC5WZ/): This seems to have decent reviews and has a 2.5GB LAN Port for connecting to a router/PC. 2.) Router that can accept faster than 1000 megabits for WAN input and LAN output: ASUS AX6000 WiFi 6 Gaming Router (RT-AX89X): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085JNGTQM/ On the prosumer side this is the only router I could find that could do faster than 1000 on the WAN and LAN side. Since one of the 10G ports is SFP+ and can't negotiate down I'd need to connect it to a switch that can accept SFP+: 3.) New Switch: QNAP QSW-M2108-2S Layer 2 Web Managed Switch with Two 10GbE SFP+ Ports and Eight 2.5GbE Ports: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PDFMBYL I was originally looking at a 2.5GbE only switch but need the 10GbE port for supporting connecting to the Asus Router above. 4.) SFP+ Cable: SFP+ DAC Twinax Cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QKVJ84J This looks like the cable I'll need to connect the router to the switch, correct? 5.) 2.5GbE USB Adapter for laptop: Killer E3100 USB-C 3.1 to RJ-45 2.5Gbps Ethernet Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HNJC3R8 Looks like I'll need this to actually leverage the faster connection on my main laptop. I was also looking into getting a Wi-Fi 6 USB Dongle, but only one I could find is the D-Link's DUB-E250, which I can't find being sold anywhere. The purchase I'm most wary of is the Asus router, I really like the custom Asus Merlin Firmware on my current router and the flexibility it provides. [link] [comments] |
Google Wifi -with- Archer C7 AC1750 -and- Linksys E4200 Posted: 30 Apr 2021 04:23 PM PDT I have Google Wifi. One of the units went bad so I'm down to 2 units now. I'm currently using Google Wifi as my only wifi solution. I live in a 3-floor house, though, so it would be nice if I could extend the wifi range via ethernet backhaul using either my old Archer C7 or my even older Linksys E4200. Unfortunately, I can't choose the channels that Google Wifi uses. So this has me questioning what the best course of action is, using just my current equipment. How can I best extend the range of my wireless network? Should I just chose two different channels on the older equipment, and then just hope that Google Wifi is smart enough to detect the traffic from my two old routers, and choose two different channels? TP-Link OneMesh vs dedicated mesh system? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:07 PM PDT I currently have a TP-Link AX20 set up with RE300 extenders with OneMesh enabled. I think it's great. Handoffs have been seamless. I've taken meetings from one side of the house and walked to another side, where I know it would have switched nodes, and was not cut off. I've used non-mesh extenders before and have been cut off in similar scenarios. But today a friend was asking if he should go with a dedicated mesh system (TP-Link Deco Wifi-6). I didn't really have an answer for him as to which was better of if there's any difference. I assume you get more flexibility with a real router, but you get wifi 6 all over with the Deco system (there's wifi 6 extenders, but for more money). But as for mesh performance and handoffs, does anyone know if a dedicated mesh system would do better than OneMesh? [link] [comments] |
Years of consistent internet problems. No solution. Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:06 PM PDT I have a techy question. Every few weeks my internet does this. I'll get 2mbps download/upload speeds. I have great equipment but I get TERRIBLE download speeds. Last time I called my provider Cox - the lady who finally solved my issue did a modem reset (from their end) and afterwards I was getting 100mbps download. This time I had the rep do a reset and I'm getting 25mbps download and 2.8mbps upload. Which is a load of BS since I pay for 150mbps. Anyone here have a degree in networking or a lot of networking experience than can help me get to the bottom of this? I'm at a loss. I've had this issue for YEARS and have had cox techs come out and do stuff - they even got permission from my apartment manager to drill a hole in my apartment and put a direct line for me. What's going on?! [link] [comments] |
[ASUS RT-AX92U] WiFi 6/ax Packet drops Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:04 PM PDT Hi all, I installed a couple (2!) of ASUS RT-AX92U routers, and the performance has been amazing - I've pushed data at a gigabit/s through the WiFi ax connection, and roaming is virtually flawless. However, the other day I noticed that frames were dropping out during video calls, and there seemed to be a pattern to it. Using packetlosstest.com, I confirmed that this happens at a frequency of 1Hz. The packet loss pattern is identical on both routers and only happens with the WiFi 6/ax (5GHz-2 radio). Switching to the WiFi 5/ac (5GHz-1 radio), the packet loss disappears. The problem persists even when turning off the second unit and all other radios on the first unit. I've tested changing pretty much all of the WiFi 6/ax (5GHz-2 radio) settings, but no luck so far. Setup:
Has anyone encountered the same problem or possibly found a solution? Any suggestions on what the disturbance at 1Hz could be? [link] [comments] |
