    What is unixporn really about?

    Posted:

I recently started following the unixporn subreddit (the same time I installed Linux). I'm still not really sure what it's about, because I mostly just see screenshots of desktops with a terminal open and a wallpaper, sometimes with themes with tiny minor differences. What makes a desktop "riced"? Is it just how cool the wallpaper is?

I think I messed up some stuff

    Posted:

Yesterday I was having a pulse audio issue, so I searched it up and one of the results said a solution was to run chown myusername:myusername -R /home/myusername and it didn't work. I ended up installing pipewire and now my audio works. But could that command have messed some stuff up on my computer? And if so how can I undo it? I've had issues running certain things ever since I did that. (I'm using Artix)

"See a list of available updates"

    Posted:

Hi all - Linux super noob here with what is hopefully an easy question to answer. I'm on Ubuntu 20.10 but recently upgraded from 20.04, when this was also an issue.

On previous computers I've run Linux on, when I ran "sudo apt update", the Terminal would tell me how much space the updates would use and then ask me if I wanted to proceed, and then it would do its thing after I hit "Y."

On my current computer, running "sudo apt update" results in Terminal telling me that X number of updates are available, and I can "see a list of available updates by running --list" (or something similar). Running "--list" will indeed list the available updates but there is no way to proceed further. It just lists the updates, the end.

I've poked around on the Internet and, wrongly or rightly, I found this Ask Ubuntu post about "resolving unmet dependencies." I tried some of the fixes posted in the first answer and always get the following results:

    - "sudo apt-get clean" or "sudo apt-get autoclean": No change

    - "sudo apt-get -f install" --> "sudo dpkg --configure -a" --> "sudo apt-get -f install" --> But I get this output: "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded" which, according to the question answerer, means that this route failed.

    - "sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade": This is what works and gives me the "X amount of space will be used, do you want to proceed?" message. Hitting Y will install the updates and running "sudo apt-update" again will show that there are no new updates to install.

My question, Linux gurus, is: why is this happening? And is there any way to fix it so that "sudo apt-update" just updates things rather than requiring me to also run the "sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade" every time?

And, just in case it's unclear, I have no idea why I'm doing this, why "sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade" ultimately succeeds, or whether I'm in fact doing something bad by running this command every time. I'm just like a monkey banging this command out as a matter of routine, but I'd love to be able to eliminate this extra step if possible (or, alternately, know why this extra step is required).

Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide!

GRUB Shows no menu even though promped to do so

    Posted:

I updated my BIOS yesterday and ,as always, GRUB wasn't appearing in BIOS as a boot option. I did what I always do and booted into my system via a bootable usb, rewrote GRUB then saved and rebooted. It worked, and after rebooting the entry in the BIOS named "Manjaro" was created again (as usual). Although now I always boot straight up into Manjaro, even though I edited the entry to:

    GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="menu"

Does anyone know how to fix it? Because booting straight to linux while I have to hop in a class is kind of anoying... Thanks in advance to everyone who responds!

Firefox uses a different keyboard layout from the rest of the system, typing: "setxkbmap -layout ee" in terminal fixes it but after every restart, Firefox has reverted back to the wrong keyboard layout. How can I fix this permanently?

    Posted:

I've posted about this before here & here and thought to have found a permanent fix, I was wrong.

On Linux Mint 20.10 Firefox uses the english keyboard layout, but rest of the system (Mint, Applications) use the estonian keyboard layout. My system used to be set up like this: all menus and text is in english but keyboard layout is estonian.

I found that typing "setxkbmap -layout ee" in terminal fixes it, but the keyboard layout for firefox changes back to the wrong layout after I reboot my system.

Any ideas how to permanently fix this?

    My frustration with pulseaudio

    Posted:

So I am using PopOS with bspwm and my pulseaudio config is mostly unchanged or at least i haven't changed much manually. I also have droidcam installed which at the installation did some initial pulseaudio configuration to work. For some time now my pulseaudio hasn't been working properly after startup. I have two devices called "Built-in Audio" listed in pulsemixer, one of which (presumably created by droidcam) is always off and doesn't provice any output, even if enabled. The other one is the main one outputting audio to the soundcard, but it's mode is always set to "Analogue Stereo Output" instead of Duplex, and if I try to change it, it only lists output and input modes, it doesn't allow me to use duplex which prevents me from using my microphone and speakers at the same time (video of that behaviour below). My solution was to kill pulseaudio and start it again, and then it lists duplex option as well so i can finally use my audio properly. This has become frustrating because of countless times I had an online class and had to kill my pulseaudio, and restart MS Teams for it to work again, and I don't know how to fix it. These are the only three lines I added to do /etc/pulse/default.pa when I installed bluetoothctl.

    load-module module-bluetooth-policy load-module module-bluez5-device load-module module-bluez5-discover

If you have any idea what might be causing that problem, please let me know. And yes, i know i can just kill PA and start it in my startup script, but this is more of a botch than proper solution, and restarting pulseaudio sometimes doesn't work the first time so i have to do it again anyways.

This is the behaviour i was talking about above

How to make smaller the images generated by Gnome Disks from my USB?

    Posted:

    Hello there!

So I have a custom distro on my pendrive and I wanted to make an iso out of it so it will remain on my PC and I could reuse it later. The size is around 14 GB and I wanted to make the image of my USB with gnome disks but it eventually makes the image 64 GB (!!!) large just because my USB'S full capacity is 64 GB. How could I change this? Or is there another software that could solve this issue?

Let's say I commit and remove windows entirely from my computer, could I ever reinstall it with my original window's product key?

    Posted:

I love Linux, it's amazing. I want to commit to using it full time, but I need to have the reassurance that if something changes, I can reinstall windows with my original product key.

I didn't install it myself, it came preinstalled so don't have any physical documentation, but I found the product key using the cmd

    "wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey"

Thanks for any help and sorry for the dumb question :)

Network card RTL8822BE does not work

    Posted:

    Hi,

I have tried installing PoP OS in on my friend'a laptop and everything works except for his WiFi card (Ethernet is fine).

He has a Realtek RTL8822BE and the behaviour is quite weird. It tries to connect but doesn't show any wifi signals. First it will show the card with lshw -c network but it appears to be "unclaimed". Later it will even disappear and we cannot recuperate it anymore. So we just install Pop OS all over again.

We tried to install diferent drivers to no avail. I also find weird that lshw shows:

    driver=rtw_8822be

We think it should be using different drivers but for some reason Linux is selecting the wrong one (shouldn't it be something starting with "rtl"?).

Any ideas if what to do next?

UPDATE: Just like magic, told him to turn on the computer again for the nth time and WiFi works now. Let's see for how long.

Ventoy GUI sh command - Where does the script come from?

    Posted:

    Hi

I was asked to create a USB bootable drive for a family member. I made a Mint Cinnamon version with balena.etcher but for their convenience they also want windows. Since that gave an error I read up about too big .iso files and how many programs have trouble with them. Which boiled my options down to woeUSB, the dd command and what I eventually found ventoy which sounds nifty as I don't need multiple drives.

Now on their site it says for an easy GUI setup I'd just have to run sudo sh VentoyWeb.sh which had me curious. sh is apparently a command for shellscripts but where does the ventoyweb.sh script come from?

Radeon Profile fan curves reset after PC boots from sleep

    Posted:

I switched to Linux a few weeks ago, and I'm having this issue with Radeon Profile right now.

I set up a custom fan curve (the default one valued silence too much and got really hot), and configured Radeon Profile to go into the system tray when I close it, and it fan curve works perfectly.... Until I put the PC to sleep and wake it up, after that the fan curve seems to reset to the default, and to get it to use my custom one again I need to open Readon Profile, go to the Fan Control tab, switch the control mode to Fixed or Auto, then switch back to Custom curve.

    What could be causing this?

    My setup is as follows:

    Pop!_OS 20.04

    KDE Plasma desktop

    Core i5 8400 CPU

AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card

    16GB of RAM @ 3000Mhz

Finding packages for “Ubuntu Supported” devices & software

    Posted:

As I build out my B/LFS system I'm finding more and more devices and software that mention Ubuntu is supported that I'm interested in using at some point. Unfortunately the BLFS book isn't catered to instruct me on how to install every possible package for Linux out there and it's order.

So questions 1. How do I locate packages that are needed to run a particular device or software 2. Is it better to set LFS up to handle .deb and .rpm files to avoid dealing with one off items?

Barebones Distro, with default root user

    Posted:

Hi Guys, i new here so please delete this post if its not allowed,

Im very old skool when it comes to linux and love root permissions out of the box like the old backtrack/kali days, how ever kali is now very bloated and no longer has a default root user out of the box and im no longer really liking the distro.

So i was wondering if there is a linux distro that has the following, (my first thought is arch but can you keep the root user without having to make a standard user)

Lightweight, Barebones if possible, not very bloated with loads of packages.

    fairly easy to install,

default user is root (no need to make standard user and no forced standard user like kali)

    many thanks in advance,

Newly installed Manjaro OS not showing up in my boot priority/menu after inserting random SSD

    Posted:

I had 2 partitions on my main HDD. Since that I'm planning to buy an NVME SSD I wanted to make sure NVME is supported. So I took SSD (windows 10 ) from my friend's laptop and put into my laptop. It worked! Windows(his) was loaded and working fine

But now after reinserting my HDD it showed no boot order. Both my Windows and Linux was gone. I managed to install windows back. But linux, even after reinstalling multiple times, is not showing up in my boot order. I don't care about GRUB menu and don't want it since I have boot order.

PS: Everything was working perfectly until now. Never face any issues like these earlier

My games are not launching while they are for others

    Posted:

    Hello everyone,

As you read in the title I can't launch or start certain games that seems to be working for some people according to protondb. I don't know if I'm missing something or if my config is somehow wrong but I really don't get why my games are not playable while they are for others. I tried using lutris and steam directly but none of these work and I have to say that I usually download games by looking through the community installer in the "Lutris" tab in "Sources". I'm not sure if that's related to Manjaro or if I need to config something special?

If you have any idea on why my games (Dota 2, Astroneer, Wakfu) are not launching I'd love to have a clue. Btw Dota 2 says it supports linux natively but somehow it's not starting past the splash screen at the very beginning.

    Thanks guys

Here is my config if you need it:
    Distro:Manjaro Linux
    Kernel:5.9.16-1-MANJARO
    RAM:16 GB
    GPU Driver:NVIDIA 455.45.01
    GPU:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

    A Question on BASH Scripting

    Posted:

I've used Linux for over a year now, maybe two, so I'm not a complete noob at Linux when it comes to day-to-day usage. I am, however, now getting into some scripting so I can make my life a bit easier when making Arch or Gentoo installs or just for self pleasure.

My question is this: is it possible for a script to execute another then continue executing the first script?

let me explain what I mean. When installing Gentoo and Arch, there is a step where you have to chroot and do stuff inside there. I know that if a run something like command_1 && chroot /mnt/drive && command_2 the second command will not run within the chroot.

I have made two scripts: Step one, which will run "command_1", then chroot, and finally, execute the second script — Step two.

Any help and criticism is welcomed.

Problems with screen sharing and taking printscreens.

    Posted:

And when I want to share my screen on Skype, the others say that my desktop flickers a lot. I've had this problem before with my Manjaro KDE. Someone said to me that it is a problem with compositor smoothing but I don't know how to change this option on Cinnamon desktop.

    WTF: elementaryos booting into Kubuntu

    Posted:

Hey guys! So something really weird is happening. A few days ago I tried out Kubuntu, didn't like it much so I flashed Ubuntu on the same usb (formatted obviously ) and ran that a bit, after a while I decided to revert back to Windows.

I erased all the old partitions and it's all good now. I thought I'd try out ElementaryOS, I flashed it and booted.

I see the elementaryOS logo for a few seconds and then a black screen, and then.... IT BOOTS UP INTO KUBUNTU? WTF?

This makes absolutely no sense; where would this Kubuntu thing be? I've tried reflashing ElementaryOS multiple times but it just keeps on booting into Kubuntu!! I get greeted with the 'Welcome' and Try or Install screen. This really is confusing and I don't see where it could possible be... (I formatted all the partitions)

I've tried Downloading the image again and deleting any images, formatting the USB but it just doesn't let me!

I have recently upgraded my primary pc to have one vertical and one horizontal monitor. Its running Ubuntu 20.04, and Im having a difficult time stretching a single wallpaper between the two monitors and getting it to scale. Can anyone recommend a good program that may simplify this process for me please? Looks so good on pictures Ive seen, much better than the same background repeated on each monitor. Any assistance highly appreciated.
