    Laptop for Software Developer student

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 02:18 AM PST

I have a 5+ years old custom built PC for my light gaming and I am currently using a Lenovo Ideapad S540 for about 1 year. My laptop has given me a really bad experience such as malfunctioning webcam, speakers, fragile exterior and super weak battery that lasts only about 3h+. I have always been a Windows user (just started learning how to operate Linux systems). Never used amy Apple products either. I am looking for a laptop that is reliable for daily schoolwork for now, I do mostly coding and any software related stuff. And also it should have a long enough battery that can last ideally about 6h+. Budget is around SGD 2000 (~ USD 1500). I really can't stand the flat keyboards (aka one of the newer Macbook's keyboard), other than that average specs should do.

I researched and found some interesting picks - Lenovo X1 Carbon (unsure because of how poor of an experience I had), Dell XPS (good reviews overall, saw some issues with overheating and keyboard) and Macbook Air/Pro 2020 (good reviews overall, but unsure of switching OS).

Any advice/discussions are welcomed (: thanks!

Looking for a laptop to enjoy CS:GO with.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 05:28 PM PST

I've been playing CS on a Lenovo Y520 for about 5 years now, but it's beginning to show it's age.

Any suggestions for an improvement that doesn't break the bank? I also use it for small Solidworks modeling stuff.

Lenovo ThinkPad vs Asus Zephyrus G15 vs Razer Stealth vs Dell XPS 13/14 vs M1 MacBook

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 01:39 AM PST

Can you share the specific use cases for these models and which of these are recommended for whom? I am sure many like me won't be having the exact clarity on what options (gaming, productivity, video editing, programming, developing money, just a brand name) they have for what price ranges. I'll put it this way. I wish to explore this entire domain, so there are no specific requirements for me. And I did try doing this but everyone out there recommends most/any of these, so, I still do not know which one is the best for me. Please consider adding to the list/suggesting any point if missing.

    Why?

I was about to buy the late 2020 Macbook Air (seeing everyone recommending it on YouTube) but looking at the posts here, I am realizing that it was not really necessary for me to spend the budget on this and I could probably do away with lesser specs and a cheaper laptop.

Country: USA. Budget: less than $1000. Main usage: Gaming, light home office/school work.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:35 PM PST

I'm looking for a desktop replacement for less than $1000.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'm looking for a laptop for less than $1000. I'm purchasing it in the USA.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I'd prefer new, but am willing to try refurbished from a reputable source.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
In order of Most Important to Least Important: build quality, performance, form factor, and battery life. It needs to last a long time; this will be my new primary usage computer.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight and thinness do not matter to me much at all. I will be using it at a desk or table, I just need to occasionally store it away or move from place to place with it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
bigger than 15 inches, smaller than 18 inches. Bigger screen means prettier games, but it still needs to be portable.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Games my current laptop cannot handle but I would like to play: Control, Pillars of Eternity 2, Endless Space 2. I don't expect to do much if any CAD or video/photo editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't need eyes-bleeding super-graphics, but at the same time, I would like to play Minecraft at 30FPS without cranking the chunks down so far I'm walking through a perpetual fog.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd prefer to have a 10 key number pad for office work. The keyboard should be capable of dealing with an angry 10 year old smashing keys. Glare is an issue on my current rig's touchscreen; getting rid of the glare is more important that keeping the touchscreen. Bluetooth for headphones and mice would be nice, but not a deal breaker.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This will be my main family computer. Multiple users of various ages will be sharing the machine.

Can't find this laptop to save my life!

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 04:27 AM PST

The closest I've found is this ASUS Zenbook. However it has only 8GB RAM non-upgradeable which gives me long term worries (Have confirmed this with ASUS even though listed as upgradeable on currys. Also has a horrible silver on silver keyboard, what even is that?) Anyway here's what I'm looking for.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US

Around 700-800 but flexible to around the 1000 if worth the punt!

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not sure, A1 if I had to

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Love thin bezels. Portability is a plus. A convertible would be a nice bonus to but not essential. Good build quality and performance. Battery life not essential. Not a gaming laptop, would like a sleek looking laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Quite important. Don't want anything too bulky.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Around 14-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Would like the option for light gaming so dedicated graphics would be nice (been looking at MX350 but doesn't have to be of course). Also light photoshopping.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Nothing major, Hades, Sims, civ. Would like the option for a broader scope though! Not new AAA releases.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

The more the better but not necessary. Good keyboard preferable of course at this price point.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Anything considered. And have heard new laptop releases (e.g. Ry 5000 are coming out now, would these be worth getting? Or even waiting for some further discounts in the next couple of weeks? Would like laptop soon though as old one has given up the ghost!

    Thank you all!

    $250 inexpensive & Reliable Laptop

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:58 PM PST

Looking for a computer for my mom. She's older (50) and isn't so good w/ technology so she doesn't need anything high-tech. Just something she can use to browse Facebook, pay bills & watch YouTube.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$250.USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Performance is most important, I would prefer it doesn't overheat and buffer ALL the time. Solid build quality would be nice as well. If it has a weaker battery that's fine, it's not something that'll be used majority of the day
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?N/A
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.No gaming, just basic browsing & watching some YouTube
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Decent keyboard and reliable build quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Most important factor is that it doesn't freeze and overheat ALL the time. I understand w/ the budget some buffering is to be expected but I just would prefer it's not a consistent issue.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the help, I've decided to get the Lenovo Duet Chromebook (based on u/Bryanmsi89 suggestion).

    Hp Omen vs Gateway Creator

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 03:22 PM PST

These are the 2 I'm looking at. I've come across a used Omen for $650 and I can get the new Gateway Creator from Walmart for $599 (both before tax).

    The Omen I'm looking at has a GTX 1050Ti gpu, an I7-7700HQ cpu, 8gb ram, a 128gb SSD and a 1T HHD.

    The Creator has a GTX 1650 gpu, a Ryzen 5 4600H cpu, 8gb ram, and a single 256gb SSD.

As far as I can tell, these specs are comparable with the Creator being slightly better in both cpu and gpu. They both have upgradable ram with the Omen upgradeable to 16gb and the creator upgradeable to 32gb however I will never need more than 16gb for what I'm using it for. What I can't find is if the creator can hold a second HHD. I will be wanting to add a 1T HHD to it if I get it which will make the laptops about the same price. If I can't add that though, that will be a bit of a big deal for me.

Pros and cons so far seems to be that the Creator would be new vs used and I could get an extended warranty for it. Unfortunately though, opening it to add a hard drive would force me to break the factory warranty tape. Also I could get the Creator much faster than by ordering it from someone (which last time I tried to get a used laptop, the person still hadn't sent it 2 weeks later). Can anyone add anything to help me decide between the 2?

I should note that I won't be doing anything more with it than what I currently do with my Dell G7. This laptop will be for my son to play games with me so he'll mostly only be playing things that I already play. He might play Fortnite on it, that's about the only extra thing I can think of. We want to play Sea Of Thieves together mostly. Also he's been saving up for a VR set so it'd be nice to know if either or both of these could handle that though we don't currently know what type of VR set he's getting.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Good build quality, decent video camera

      Not gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
SSD drive would be nice, good build quality, optical drive would be nice (but can buy external one)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking to buy a laptop for my aunt

She wants a 17in laptop in the $700 range

SSD or (SDD or HDD combo) for speed and snappiness

Durable (her last laptop broke because of the screen hinge which came undone from the base, and before that her laptop broke because she dropped it and there were white lines across the screens)

CD/DVD drive (if not it's not a big deal, I will buy an external one for her if it doesn't have one)

A good battery life is not required (she uses it only plugged in at home)

    I found a few options:

I don't want to get her the HP because her current laptop is an HP (old generation of same model) and the hinge in it is very poorly built and the screws that hold the hinge got ripped out of the plastic. Very poor hinge design.

I don't see many 17in laptop options so hoping you guys know of some good laptops that you can recommend.

MAG 15 from Eluktronics vs Lenovo Legion 5

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:39 PM PST

MAG 15 with i7-9750H and 1660 ti GPU. Priced at 999 USD on Amazon. 16 gb ram, 512 gb nvme ssd. 97 watt hour battery.

Legion 5 with AMD RYZEN 7 - 4800H with 1660 ti GPU. Priced at 899 USD on ebay. 16 gb ram, 256 nvme ssd. 60 watt hour battery

The MAG 15 wins out on everything but CPU power and price (in my opinion). Is the sacrifice in build quality, aesthetics, weight, and materials worth the better CPU and lower price?

Lenovo yoga i9 vs. ASUS ZenBook 14

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:50 PM PST

    Hi all,

Looking for some advice: I am considering both the Lenovo Yoga i9 and the ASUS ZenBook 14 (links to product specs: https://www.newegg.com/p/1XV-0001-010H2?Item=9SIAHRCDSC1772 vs.

    https://www.newegg.com/pine-gray-asus-zenbook-ux435eg-xh74-mainstream/p/N82E16834235615?Description=UX435EG-XH74&cm_re=UX435EG-XH74-_-34-235-615-_-Product&quicklink=true)

This would be for both personal and work use - I do need to use some applications that require some amount of processing power and graphics capacity (Adobe suite, data analysis programs, etc.). I like the portability of the Yoga i9, but the bonus dedicated graphics (NVIDIA MX450) in the ZenBook could offer a small performance boost. Price isn't an issue up to $2000 USD.

Also, for those who use 4K screens on laptops - is it worth it? Or does it just kill the battery life?

Finally, if anyone else has a killer 14" laptop they recommend, let me know! Other specs I'm trying to stick to: 16GB+ RAM, 11th Gen i7+, 512GB+ SSD, no dedicated graphics card above NVIDIA MX450, good battery life.

Thanks all! I appreciate you taking the time to read (and possibly respond)!

[$800]A laptop with some emphasis on gaming.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 12:10 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$800 being around the most I'd go for, the lower the better.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Of course.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build Quality > Performance > Form Factor > Battery Life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

A fair bit. I don't want it to be as bulky like my old Sager NP8651.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

There'll be some light photoshop work and gaming done on it.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

When it comes to games, the main one will be FFXIV. I'm fine with it on medium settings as it's not gonna be the main focus. Otherwise, it's visual novel for days.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like an IPS screen if possible.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Overall, I'll be using the laptop as a second computer when I'm not in my room where my dedicated rig is, and on the rare occasion I may need to go out. Mostly a general purpose/jack-of-all-trades sort.

    Looking for a compromise...

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:59 PM PST

I currently use a Dell 7577 - it's a good laptop but I'm after something thats a bit more configurable. For example,

    1. GSYNC
    2. Ability to control fans
    3. Ability to under-clock (to quiet it down when browsing etc)
    4. RGB and other such goodies!!!
    5. Battery life needs to be half decent. For instance the 2 hours offered by the ROG Zephyrus GX501 would be no good to me....

If it can play GTA5 at a decent level of graphics that will do. I play other games like Far Cry 5 and Doom Eternal.

I'm in the UK and have a budget of £1000 happy to buy off eBay too.

    Thanks for your advice!

    $600 usd - work/programming/light gaming laptop

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 02:10 PM PST

I need a laptop for my new job, as well as for school, and developing some software. I also want to play minecraft on it without huge lag. I was thinking of getting a Lenovo Ideapad 5i, I found one at the store with some pretty good specs, 512gb ssd, 8gb ram, i5 processor, and some intel graphics card I've never heard of, but there is one thing, the RAM is not upgradeable on this laptop. I'm wondering if there's any similar option?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:34 PM PST

Hi, I was hoping someone could suggest a laptop that can be used a writers laptop as well as a gamers laptop with a smidgen of audio editing thrown in. So basically, I need a stellar keyboard for long typing sessions Gaming capability (Steam, Ubisoft, Origin, etc.) And good speakers + the ability to run audacity software

Flexible budget, but I am in college so lower is better.

    Thanks!!😁

    Decent Laptop for University Student?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:26 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE*

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 AUD which is ~$800 USD - slightly higher is okay but due to the nature of my circumstances I'd prefer to keep the cost as low as possible.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes but I think new-ish models would suit me better bc I plan to use this laptop for the next half decade or so.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Tbh I just want it to run smoothly and fairly quickly, not die on me in the middle of class and like,,,,,, be a decent laptop overall.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too pressing but lighter laptop models would be great as I'll be carrying it around often.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A but my current[ly dying] laptop is about 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

At the moment it's just Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically Photoshop and InDesign). I am planning to move into the STEM field so I'll probably need to run heavy programs in the future.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A aside from Stardew Valley

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Decent keyboard and build, touch screen is a plus as I like to use a pencil for drawing/note taking but happy to forego this if necessary, maybe 8-12GB RAM as I have a tendency to do multiple things at the same time and my current laptop (4GB) was struggling

    Final thoughts:

My current study program doesn't really require a strong laptop and I don't really use my laptop for entertainment except for the occasional netflix party.

[United States, $1500~] Incoming college student looking for a laptop that can do video editing, gaming, and general-purpose work (Docs, Slides, Sheets, Paint)

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:54 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Under $1500 is ideal, but a little over is flexible if the performance improvements can make up for the price.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life should be long enough so that it can be used all day with an overnight charge. Performance is a close second.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not a priority, but light and convenient enough to carry around all day without getting tiring.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, games listed below.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Genshin Impact, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator (and Strive), Dragon Ball Fighterz, GTA 5, most shooter games at Medium-High graphics. 60 FPS is the best.

No touchscreen preferably, build should be reliable enough to withstand accidental drops if they occur. Good input devices are pretty important to me as well.
