Looking For A Flexible University and Casual Gaming Laptop! $800 - $1500 AUD

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:44 PM PST

Hi! I need help with finding a reliable new laptop that will be able to last a while.

I don't know much about laptops and I've personally brought duds before so I thought I would go to more knowledgable people and see what they suggest :)

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $800 - $1500 AUD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I don't think so. Seems like more of a hassle.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    1. Performance
    2. Battery Life
    3. Build Quality
    4. Not massive!

All of these are extremely important for me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm using this laptop for it's portability and will be carrying it around a lot. So probably not a brick!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A, maybe just not gigantic so I can fit it in my bag.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Programs:

RStudio ArcGIS (I can live without this)

    Gaming:

Stardew Valley Terraria Genshin Impact on low to med settings

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As mentioned above ^ Stardew Valley - medium to maybe high? DPS Terraria - medium to high DPS Genshin Impact on low to med settings - medium DPS

Maybe can run other similar games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    A good keyboard and mousepad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So just for more clarification, I already have a good gaming PC but I would like to be able to play some relaxing games on the couch and stuff.

As well as one I could use for University work that will be able to last a day and run programs such as RStudio with no problems. That I can also carry around in my backpack all day as I'm walking around campus!

Thank you so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it!

Should I buy a gaming PC or build my own?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:48 PM PST

I recently got an Oculus Quest 2 and I'm dying to play some open world games through Steam. The issue is that my laptop's graphics aren't good enough for Oculus' PC requirements (Oculus Rift and Rift S Minimum Requirements and System Specifications). I'm not looking to spend any more than $500-600, but I'm an impulse shopper so I may go higher if it's a good enough deal. Compatible gaming PCs all look super expensive and it seems I could build my own gaming PC for a lower price. I've never built a computer before but I built robots and loved coding and other tech stuff when I was younger. I've always picked up on new skills (especially building- and/or logic-related) very quickly, so I have faith in myself. What do you think is the best move? Any suggestions for gaming PCs or advice for building a computer would be greatly appreciated.

    Should I get this laptop?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:59 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of getting a gaming laptop and found a good one that would suit me. Here's a link to it.

It seems to tick all the right boxes, pretty beefy CPU, RTX 3060 (non max-q woo hoo) 16GB RAM 3200Mhz, 512NVMe SSD with the option to add more M.2 SSDs in the future.

What do you think? If you find something better feel free to link it in the comments (please use the retailers UK website if possible).

Older model vs integrated graphics: looking to buy two laptops.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:10 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I'd like to spend between 500-1000 total on 2 identical laptops for my kids. They like to play steam games and stuff like terraria and minecraft. I want them to have a little room to expand to more graphic intensive games.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

At my budget, that's really all I'm considering...

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life and ability to play some games.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    A little gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Terraria, Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, Skyrim,

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

reliable build maybe dell or lenovo?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Basically, I'm curious if collective hindsight can identify some really solid older model laptops that can be had for cheap(er) these days. I've been looking on ebay at 15" laptops with decently powerful CPU, 8GB RAM and a SSD. Discrete graphics might be a plus -- but, if integrated graphics outperform older models then that's fine too.

    £1000GBP for Longevity

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:45 AM PST

    Budget: c.£1000GBP

Refurbs/Used: Yes, or even good deals on "last gen".

Form Factor: Not fussed on form.

    Weight/Thinness: Not fussed.

Screen Size: Slight preference for 14"+ but am considering 13"

Applications: 90% browser, spreadsheets, 10% video editing (Adobe but not bonded) and Civ V.

Priorities: - Coming from a 10YO self-build PC so I'm conditioned to want a good £/longevity ratio - so £600 laptop that needs replacing in 3 years is as good as £1000 laptop that lasts for 5. - I don't want a noisy wheezebox unless genuinely doing something intensiven (video processing). - Will occasionally connect to a TV/Monitor at 4k. - Ideally USB-C chargeable

Having done a bunch reading/viewing around what's out there, I thought the below looked in the right spot. Not sure how much creedance I should pay to AMD>Intel - there are consequences on video processing and heat/efficiency but in reality what will I notice?

Lenovo Slim 7/Slim 7 Pro (but as far as I can tell they don't exist for purchase!) HP Envy x360 15 (much difference with 13"?) Macbook Air

Macbook Air probably ticks most of the boxes but am Windows lifer so don't know how hard the transtition will be (and whether it'll be feasible to switch back out in the future), and presumably getting the extended warranty is a recommendation for Apple but a not insubstantial cost.

Help me finding a gaming laptop please.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:44 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1800 and below but maybe I can push it to $2000 and below(?).

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

1st - Performance (AMD Ryzen 5000? and Nvidia RTX 3000 series?, willing to wait on unreleased laptops) 2nd - Display (17-inch QHD) 3rd - Battery Life (4-8 hours on light-mid workload) 4th and below - everything else

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't care. Even if it is thick and heavy as hell (for the thermals, of course)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably 17-inch QHD but still prioritize performance, so 17-inch 1080p is okay too. Okay, at the very least (if none fit what I am finding), 15-inch 1080p

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming and streaming (desktop is better, blah blah blah. I know, I just need the portability for college too) on one laptop. Games range from Minecraft to Cyberpunk 2077 (Mid/High Settings). Some video editing too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, Cyberpunk 2077 (Mid/High Settings). Just want it to be playable and at the bare minimum of +60fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

RAM and Storage - Don't care how small or big it is as long as its upgradeable but preferably on the RAM it is already 16gb when purchased

Build quality - Don't care if it doesn't feel premium (e.g plastic chassis) but I do care that it does not break on me easily.

Looks - I don't want a super "gamer"-looking laptop (Lenovo Legion laptops seems like a good reference). Maybe a professional-looking and subtle one, would like some RGB in it though (if possible).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Maybe some recommendations on how to keep gaming laptops cool? Or cooling pads that work very well to keep thermals in check because I am worried that my system will thermal throttle in the long-run.

That is all. Thank you guys for your inputs I appreciate it. :)

    Which combination is better?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:24 AM PST

    Intel i7 1165G7 + Intel XE Graphics

    Or

    Intel i7 1065G7 + MX330 Graphics

I don't list other specifications down as others are basically the same. Price also.

(For me, I don't fill up questionnaire at the moment as I already have the idea what laptop I want, just that I don't know which combination is worth more.)

    Should I buy this laptop?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:07 AM PST

I am a student looking for a laptop for university notes/study/watching educational videos.

I've come across this laptop and it looks like a great budget deal because I do not have much money to spare. Do you think this laptop would be a good one to go for?

One thing that concerns me is that it has only 1 processor. Will it be a bad deal to go with?

    Specs:

    - Ryzen 5 4500U 6c6t APU- 16 GB of DDR4-3200 MHz dual-channel RAM- 256 GB SK Hynix NVMe SSD- Radeon Vega 6 graphics- 1080p IPS touchscreen w/digitizer (pen included)

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$0 - $600 (can ideally go to $800 if the 2 in 1 criteria is met)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      2 in 1 laptop.
      Touchscreen.
SSD Storage. Ideally 512 GB but would love 1TB (Can buy portable hard drive disk if that's not fulfilled)
      RAM more than 4 GB
Battery life above 4 hours will do

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not much. I am fine with bulky laptops around 3-4 lbs can do

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14 inches and above. Ideally 15.6

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Nothing much

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like a laptop that I can afford. However, I cannot afford laptops above the $1000 range.

Thank you for your time :)

US $400-600 budget for Laptop for photo editing & light gaming

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:58 PM PST

Hey y'all! Hope you can help. Haven't bought a new computer in a long time and don't want to end up hating my purchase. Went to Staples and liked the feel and aesthetics of the Asus Vivobook 15 and the Lenovo Ideapad 5, but not sure if they're the best for what I'm after.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:US. $400-600

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Sure, as long as I can get a warranty with refurb

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Screen with bright colors and good color accuracy is #1. Want enough RAM and GPU that it's not struggling and I'm spending tons of time waiting for programs to load

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Would use when traveling, so prefer it not be a brick, but with my budget, I'm open to anything. Most of the time it will be on a desk.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing bigger than 15.6".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would be using for photo editing, vector art, gaming, writing, and home office type stuff. Programs: Steam/Epic Games for gaming (Sims, Minecraft, Arkham City, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, etc), Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, and Microsoft suite (Word, etc). Very basic video editing for family videos with Premiere. Surfing the web and video streaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Games like Sims, Minecraft, Arkham City, Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I'm ok with low graphic mode, I've got plenty of consoles for more graphic intense games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard that isn't too mushy would be nice. If RAM is upgradeable, that would be a plus, otherwise looking for 16gb if soldered. Bluetooth would be fantastic. Card reader slots would be nice, but not a deal breaker as I have a few plug in ones.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I know, a lot to ask on such a small budget! Hoping to not have to buy a new laptop for a few years, so if you have suggestions slightly over the budget, let me know. Thanks all!

    High School Laptop

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:57 PM PST

    People of Reddit,
I am going into high school in a few months, and need to purchase a new laptop for the occasion. Though I have narrowed it down to two choices (M1 Macbook Pro or Thinkpad X1 Carbon) it is hard to decide from there. Therefore I decided to post on many various subreddits asking for reasons I should, or shouldn't, get one of the two laptops. For reference, I will be doing things such as
    -Taking notes
    -Using E-Textbooks
    -Lots of coding
    -Some machine learning activities
    -Making presentations
    -Video editing
    -Photo editing
    -CAD
    -3D Modeling
    -Arduino
    -Possibly making music

(I am not using Office 365 so this does not matter to me)

Please let me know if you need any more information! (If there is anything I forgot I will add it.)
    Thank you for your help!

    Which Laptop Should I get?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:35 AM PST

After doing some research, I found two laptops that I might buy.

The first one seems to have an i7-10750H

    A 144hz Screen

    2x8GB DDR4 Ram

    $1,173.15

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-i7-10750H-Dual-Channel-PH315-53-72XD/dp/B08842D7JS/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=Gaming+Laptop&qid=1611673873&sr=8-8

The second one seems to have an i7-9750H

    A 60hz Screen

8GB DDR4 Ram (No dual channel)

    $959.99 (On Sale)

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-gf65-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-512gbsolid-state-drive-black/6421620.p?skuId=6421620

I listed the differences that I saw

I'm wondering if I should just go for the second one and buy a second stick of RAM, which would be this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PVW253T#customerReviews

I did the math, and I would still be saving a little bit less than $200.00.

I'm asking if it's worth having a 9th gen CPU over the 10th gen CPU.

If there are other options available that I haven't seen, it would be nice to know.

If I could get a higher GPU, I don't mind spending up to $1,300, but I doubt that there's a better option out there.

Are there any laptops in the $1000-$1500 sgd range that fits these standards and can also run Fortnite and similar games at say 100 fps?

I also personally find Book's silver color way more nicer (plus screen ratio of the Book suits me more as it's closer to Surface Book's than Stealth), but not sure about how it's Iris Xe graphic card is capable to run game titles I've mentioned above (I'm more like a casual gamer, playing pixel art indie games mostly).I'm currently working on Surface Book 2 15" with GTX1060 on board, and I'm worried if Razer Book won't be a huge step back for me in terms of performance? (I want to switch as it's too big for me and the hinge mechanism drives me nuts because every time I pick it up I feel that I have a very expensive egg in my hands that can break easily if picked-up wrongly)

    $2000 Australia Considering Legion 5

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:15 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around $2000 in Australia although it would be ideal to not necessarily spend my whole budget
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Good build quality, a good battery life would be a plus - ideally at least 5 hours
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'd rather it be sturdy than need it to be the thinnest/lightest
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      ARCgis, Photoshop, some casual gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Casual gaming so happy enough with mid settings. Games like IV, Crusader Kings, HOMM, Dragon Age, some indie stuff
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard as I do a lot of typing and reliable build quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm heading back to university so need a laptop that meets those needs. My Macbook Air, which was a gift, recently died and I'm heading back to university so need to replace it. Mostly it'll be used for uni stuff. I had considered just getting another Macbook Air because its within my budget and I'm used to it but it'd be nice to get back into some casual gaming and not have to use bootcamp for uni software like ARCgis.

Lenovo has discounts for students for the next couple of days so I could get:

Legion 5 for $1313.10 AUD ( approx $1016.08 in US)

    AMD Ryzen™ 5 4600H (6C / 12T, 3.0 / 4.0GHz, 3MB L2 / 8MB L3)

    15.6" FHD (1920x1080) WVA 250nits Anti-glare, 120Hz, 45% NTSC

    2x 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4-3200

    512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6

    Integrated 60Wh

    Or

Legion 5i for $1655.10 AUD (approx $1288.45 in US)

    10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10750H (6C / 12T, 2.6 / 5.0GHz, 12MB)

    15.6" FHD (1920x1080) WVA 250nits Anti-glare, 120Hz, 45% Gamut

    2x 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4-2933

    512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6

    Integrated 60Wh

The Legion 5i also has the option to customise it by upgarding the harddrive to 1tb ssd ($400), adding an additional harddrive ($99-$624), upgrade the display 500nits Anti-glare, 240Hz, 100% sRGB Gamut, Dolby Vision ($500), upgrade the graphics card to RTX 2060 6GB ($100).

Are either of these good deals? Am I going over kill for what I want and should I go for something cheaper/more basic? If one of these is pretty suited is it better to go for the AMD 5 or the intel 7? And if the intel should I be considering the customisation?

Can I find my Dream Machine?!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:28 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Sorry- should have read this first. Did my best.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1200-ish USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Prefer New

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I... don't know how to answer this?

Must be able to run multiple, resource intensive programs, have several websites up, and not experience performance issues.

Must be able to plug Ethernet in (as my WiFi sucks).

Must be able to add second (maybe third) monitor.

Would LOVE one with a touch screen, 2-1 (laptop to tablet), with a stylus/pen, and a backlit keyboard + #pad

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Yes- probably Reason/ Splice/ Unity/ Steam/ Krita/ Gimp

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't know- interested in Skyrim, TemTem and No Mans Sky

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would LOVE one with a touch screen, 2-1 (laptop to tablet), with a stylus/pen, and a backlit keyboard + #pad

Hello! I am new to this sub and checked past posts but didn't see exactly what I was looking for. Can you help me? I've done a bunch of research but I am crippled in my decision making. Here's what I am using it for:

Work From Home/ Remote Learning/ Programming/ Music Production/ Art/ Gaming (not AS important as everything else)

    💻 Specs I'd like:

    i7 / 1TB / 16GB+ Ram / Decent enough camera

I've checked out Lenovo, Asus, and Acer. Willing to try other brands, but I hate Dell almost as much as Comcast.

💿 Closest I have come is a Lenovo Yoga C940.

Was trying to stay as close to, or under, $1200 as possible. Can it be done?? I'm in Atlanta.

Basically I am looking for something I can use to work from home, but I am also trying to create a game from scratch. Learning how to program and use art and music programs has proven frustrating on my old Toshiba something something. Thank you in advance!

    Which laptop please help!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:24 PM PST

So I am need of a laptop that I can use for light video editing and Adobe illustrator & photoshop as well as some music editing.

i have researched the Asus Zenbook pro duo & the Microsoft surfacebook 3.

I like the idea of the MSB3 turning into a tablet. Would make it easy to take notes. I also like the idea of Asus 2nd screen.

they can both use a stylus. The MSB3 can lay flat. Which I think would be easier for drawing or using the stylus?

My concern is. 1.Do I need a stylus at all? I know I'm just starting but I do intend to improve. 2.Is it easy to use a stylus with the screen upright? if you guys have other suggestions let me know. Please. i also use sketch up to model my woodworking projects but I just use mouse. It's a pretty straightforward program.

thank you for helping me out!
