Why does everyone hates on GNOME ? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:04 AM PST I am running linux for almost a year now, I've never been an expert I just used it to do pretty normal things. One thing I did a lot is trying new distros and DEs. ( I distrohopped like an animal !!! ). Looking at the forums I always noticed that practically everyone hates the GNOME desktop environment, they say it's ugly and bloated and heavy on RAM. I'm now using GNOME since 4 months because it looks different from Windows or MacOS (it is sad to see that practically every desktop environment tries to be as similar to Windows as possible). I never had problems or bugs in gnome the only annoying thing is packagekit but I just remove it and lock it. I also like it because you don't have any dock/panel taking out screen space, so I can run my programs practically full screen (only having the black top bar but that is actually very slim). I can switch workspaces with keyboard and that's cool :) People say that GNOME is heavy but it actually runs on 800/900 MB at idle and, yes KDE runs on something like 700 MB but are 100/200 MB actually relevant on a modern system that usually has from 8 to 16 GB of RAM? Thanks in advance for the attention ;) [link] [comments] |
Improving your Linux experience. Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:50 AM PST Hello, since 2012 I have been using Linux, initially only in dual boot, but recently, because in 2020 I have been using it as my main system on a laptop and desktop computer since September, and after many years spent on Debian / Ubuntu I reached for Arch Linux. With time, I started to use i3-gaps and my own widely understood configurations. I managed not only to design, but to create a system that is convenient in my opinion for updating my configuration between my computers, and soon I will start creating documentation for this easy-to-use script. So I have a question that Youtube and Uncle Google were unable to answer. What else could I improve to make the transition from Dekstop to laptop and vice versa? That I would not have a comfortable opportunity to continue my work anywhere? It uses syncthing to sync files, but I feel something is missing from my workflow. Can you help me? Provides a link to my configuration scripts, I would like to point out that without documentation it is hard to get to know it, but it is mainly based on symbolic links, installing new packages and quickly restoring my entire workflow during the arch installation, I hope you will help me including. :) I would like to use the Apple Ecosystem as a reference. Because it seems to me to be the most extensive ecosystem ever created. Github Link : https://github.com/by-speece/.settings [link] [comments] |
Learning More About Linux Through Linux From Scratch Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:28 PM PST I have been interested in learning more about Linux for a while now and I really want to gain an understanding of what Linux is and how building on top of the kernel works. I want an understanding that goes beyond just how to utilize the desktop environment, with the end goal of learning development closer to the kernel. Currently I am reading The Linux Command Line by William Shotts which I have heard is an essential for new users to read. Along with that I am using Pop!_OS as my operating system at the moment. Does anyone here have experience with Linux From Scratch, and is developing my own personalized system through Linux From Scratch an effective path in starting to learn the nitty-gritty of how Linux systems are built? Thanks for any input! PS: If anyone has any other recommendations even if they are away from Linux From Scratch, please let me know. Looking to learn as much as I can! Edit: [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:06 AM PST So initially /dev/nvme0n1p7 was a partition for KDE Neon but I recently removed it. So i wanted to add the unallocated space(currently set as a new volume) to /dev/nme0n1p4, i.e. the D partiton. How do I do that? [link] [comments] |
How to switch from radeon kernel driver to amdgpu driver on Manjaro? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:53 AM PST I want to install Vulkan but apparently I have to switch to amdgpu kernel driver. How can I do that? Im Linux newbie, so please, give me some detailed guide. [link] [comments] |
Automatic Hotswap/Hotplug SATA drives? (beyond /etc/fstab) Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:04 AM PST I aquired a passthrough SATA 3 Hotswap bay and my motherboard natively supports the capability. Drives manually mount and unmount fine while the system was already booted and everything works as expected. I setup automatic mounting through fstab with nofail option so with no drive present at boot it will not halt my init. I want to have it remount automatically if removed post boot when it was mounted before. I was looking at udisks2 and autofs but settled for udiskie because it had a GUI option but it only works with "hotpluggable devices" which I assume is thunderbolt/USB/firewire devices. Can I change a block devices type or is there another common option? Mounting via LABEL or UUID would be prefered. Lastly what is your unmounting procedure besides using the unmount command manually? I want to physically insert and remove drives quickly. (Scripts, desktop shortcuts, systemd units, keyboard shortcuts) What about with 3.5" HDDs and not just 2.5" SSDs? My bay has a power off switch to allow spindown before ejecting but I was thinking of a script utilizing hdparm or similar prior to unmounting. [link] [comments] |
Seeming random crash/reboot. How to diagnose next time? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST Hardware:
Dual boot Linux Mint MATE latest version and Win 10 on two different SSDs. Problem: In the past, upon reboot, I would get a red light on the mobo every once in a while, it wouldn't go into POST. I would change the RAM around, or just re-seat it ram, and it would fix the problem until it happened next time. I was using an older version of Linux Mint and hadn't been keeping the BIOS up-to-date. I had run memtest on Windows without any issues. I didn't spend much time troubleshooting because of laziness. Recently, I updated the BIOS, upgraded Linux Mint to the latest version (from within the previous version, it wasn't used that much), and started using the Linux installation more often. On two occasions, the Linux install would just randomly reboot in the middle of me working on something non intensive. No errors or anything. What should I do the next time it happens in order to try and figure out what the problem is? Any specific logs I need to check? Where do I go to have someone look over the logs? I want to pinpoint where the problem is and to try and figure out whether it's related to the random booting issue. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Meld (comparison app) - need help Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:52 AM PST I'm having trouble with Meld. I've read their wiki/FAQ and done web searches but can't figure it out. Goal: compare files within folders across two external hard drives. I'd like to have an exact copy of all the files as a backup. I did folder comparisons with the default settings. They took absolutely forever and make my system incredibly slow. The files are an average combination of photos, text files, media files, docs, music files, etc. Despite how long it took, once I got the comparison. I could copy the different/missing files back and forth and end up with no differences, so I knew it was complete. However, since it was so painfully slow, I checked the preferences and found I could have it do a simple date/timestamp and file size comparison instead. Great! So I enabled this and whooosh! - the process went from an hour+ per folder to less than a minute. I was ecstatic. However, when I'd copy the files primary drive to the secondary, it would never tally - and basically all the files are now showing as mismatched. I realized that every time I move a file over, it gets a new "current" timestamp. So, I can never get the documents to tally, now, so to speak. So, I don't know what to do to resolve this. What am I doing wrong or what could I do to fix this? Is there a simple comparison that will not be effected when I move the primary files to the secondary because of the timestamp - while still keeping it a "simple" comparison (vs a slower/more advanced word for word or code-level comparison)? I thought that the original file timestamp would be retained from the original file vs getting changed because it was moved. I'm also open to using a different app/software - though I'd like a GUI. For what I'm doing, it's much easier. Thanks so much for any help and info you're able to share. I really appreciate it. [link] [comments] |

How to create initial OS snapshot with Timeshift from CLI? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:37 AM PST Hello, I want to backup my os on a server without graphical interface. I know, that it is possible to do that with timeshift, but I am concerned, how to do initial setup without GUI? I read this tutorial, and it looks like it is actually possible, but timeshift picks backup target device by itself. I'm not sure how could I point certain drive. [link] [comments] |
Can I play games on linux without steam? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:08 AM PST hello fellow humans. I am considering switching from windows 10 to Pop_OS and the only things I know about gaming on Linux is that some games on steam are playable on Linux, if you have wine. I also heard that it's possible to download the epic games store, which is my preferred platfrom, from lutris. But I can't play any games from there beacuse of anti-cheat software. I don't really like steam. I only have a small library of 3 free to play titles + hell let loose, on steam. I have pretty much all my games on the epic games store and uplay. I also have a lot of trouble with not all games showing up in my steam library. So my question is: is it possible to play decent games on Linux without using steam? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:15 AM PST First, My laptop doesn't have 2 nvme ports, will an external USB to nvme enclosure work for connecting the new SSD to the laptop for migrating data from my old SSD to the new SSD? Second, I am trying to avoid reinstalling the Operating systems, I'll do it if there is no other option left. Google search tells me that I can clone my old SSD using Clonezilla or dd on Linux but since I got a Samsung 970 Evo, I also have the option to use their software Samsung magic, but it's only for windows. I am confused which should I use? Third, will cloning the ssd preserve the boot partitions of both the operating systems? Fourth, after cloning, can I just replace my old ssd with the new one and it'll work, or is there something else I have to do. Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:37 AM PST I've been running Linux Mint 20 for a several days now and have been really impressed with apart from one little thing and that is battery life.
