I want to install Ubuntu but I have some concerns

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:03 AM PST

Like the title says I have some concerns before installing Ubuntu:

Laptop Information: Name: HP Omen GPU: Nivida GTX 1660ti Storage: 256 SDD (Has Windows on it) + 1 TB HDD

Concerns: 1) I want to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu, I will Install Ubuntu on the HDD, will that cause a problem?

    2) When booting I need to select "safe graphics" option that is worrying to me, why don't normal option work?

    3) After booting using safe graphics mode I see resolution as 1024x768 not my 1920x1080 (I'm assuming it's related to the BIOS or smth), will the resolution remain 1024x768 after installation????

    4) During installation Ubuntu will install all the Nivida Drivers I need for my laptop to work properly, right? Or will I have to configure the driver manual after installation?

    5) When install do I install Grub on my SDD where Windows is? Or Can I install it on the HDD like I prefer?

    6) I usually manually partition during installation (because idk that's what I saw on youtube once), do you guys recommend that? If not what option do I choose?

    7) I am doing software development and game development with Unity, I will reserve about 200GB for Ubuntu is that good enough? (I know last one is personal not technical sorry)

Thanks all so much in advance ❤️

What happens to Peppermint OS and Raspbian when LXDE becomes unmaintained?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:41 PM PST

I've heard that LXDE isn't being maintained anymore or at least, development is no longer as active, being that the focus will be on LXQt instead. Also, GTK2 is also no longer being maintained also, and LXDE is reliant on GTK2.

So, what happens to Peppermint OS and Raspbian when LXDE becomes unmaintained? Will they move on to LXQt or will they create a fork of LXDE that relies on newer GTK?

Deleted "/usr/bin/df" and now I need it back, wat do?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:38 AM PST

As the title states I foolishly deleted /usr/bin/df and now I need it to use the df command. Is there somewhere I can download this file? Googling seemed to lead me nowhere helpful.

    TIA

Fresh Ubuntu Server install not showing all available space. Wrong mount points maybe?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:57 AM PST

I installed Ubuntu Server and Samba, and was surprised when I tried to start copying files and it told me there was not enough space.

fdisk -l shows all of the space (sda3):

    root@sserver:/home/stretch# fdisk -l Disk /dev/loop0: 54.98 MiB, 57626624 bytes, 112552 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk /dev/loop1: 29.9 MiB, 31334400 bytes, 61200 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk /dev/loop2: 71.28 MiB, 74735616 bytes, 145968 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk /dev/sda: 1.84 TiB, 2000398934016 bytes, 3907029168 sectors Disk model: ST2000VN0001-1SF Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes Disklabel type: gpt Disk identifier: 542A927E-D68B-430E-9D17-C8C9CA077387 Device Start End Sectors Size Type /dev/sda1 2048 4095 2048 1M BIOS boot /dev/sda2 4096 2101247 2097152 1G Linux filesystem /dev/sda3 2101248 3907026943 3904925696 1.8T Linux filesystem Disk /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-ubuntu--lv: 200 GiB, 214748364800 bytes, 419430400 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes

But, when I use df -h, the Filesystem and Size for / mount looks off: (My connected Windows PC also seems to think there's about 200G available)

How can I make the full 2T available in my Samba share?

    Thanks!

Distro for a developer, who had a month of experience with linux?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:53 AM PST

I dont wanna fiddle with arch-based distros yet but i could use a rolling-release distro, so i dont think debian would fit in. I have a celeron e3400 cpu, radeon hd 5700 and ill probably get a crucial mx500 ssd, along with 2gb ram. Ill do modelling in blender so what should i choose?

Distros that i wouldnt get right now; debian, arch distros and puppy linux

Edit: i cant upgrade ram bc i only have for the ssd

UPDATE: Ill risk it and get manjaro xfce

Tap and drag ( or whatever it is called ) not working on desktop

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:29 AM PST

    SOLVED

I can do this (tap-and-drag ?) inside dolphin file manager in Kubuntu but cannot do this on the desktop/home screen ? I am really confused since all I did was just change the wallpaper by going into Configure Desktop. What did I do wrong pot not working oentially and how can I reverse it?

Update: Solved. I don't understand what happened, but inside Desktop Folder Settings , I changed the layout from desktop view to folder view and then it prompted to "Layout changes must be applied before other changes can be made" I did that and it returned back to normal.

Help Returning Cloned Image Back to Smaller Capacity SSD

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:01 AM PST

I recently cloned my primary drive before erasing it because I had to send my laptop out for repairs. I used Clonezilla for for the process. I cloned my OS SSD drive to a larger hard drive and now, I'm unable to figure out how to return my OS (Mint) to my SSD drive because Clonezilla is notifying me something to the effect that my SSD drive being to small despite it being the source of the cloned drive.

Can someone please show me a noob friendly guide as to how I can return my cloned image back to my SSD drive from my hard drive? My only caveat is that I don't have remove the SSD because I'd have to dismantle the entire base of my laptop.

Error while trying to change drivers (Nvidia, Ubuntu, error 268)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:44 AM PST

I bought a new Nvidia card a few days ago (specs listed below) but I think I had the same error with my old card. When I try to change my drivers to anything else than "NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-390.141" I get the following error: screenshot. A while after that it asks me for my password again and I just canceled the operation for now (I don't think I can continue with these errors anyway?).

    Specs:

    Current driver: 390.14

Driver I tried to install: 460 (I also got this error with my old card when I tried to use open source drivers - X.Org.X server -- Nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-nouveau)

    My OS: Ubuntu 20.4

    My new card: GT 1030

Realtek A7000 not working with MSI Tomahawk b450 (Manjaro)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:28 AM PST

I am currently using the Realtek A7000 network adapter for internet access. It used to work fine on my old motherboard but I did have to install AUR drivers for it to work. Recently I installed a new motherboard, specifically the MSI Tomahawk b450, and while the option to connect to internet shows up, it can't actually connect to them (I.E. I'll see <insert wifi connection here> on the network list and attempt to connect, but it won't actually go through with the connection and will end with an error). Has anyone else had this issue or know the solution?

I have been tinkering with the echo command, and on referring to the man page saw these flags. There were also some other flags under the -e flag, I didn't understand those either. Please explain🙏

Help creating startup systemd service on raspberry pi

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:03 AM PST

Sorry, have really tried to get the formatting to work :(

I'm trying to set up a service to run a python script at startup on my raspberry pi 3

I have the following in /lib/systemd/system/humidity-sensor.service:

    [Unit] Description=Humidity Sensors Python Script After=multi-user.target [Service] Type:simple ExecStart=/usr/bin/python3 /home/pi/python TempHumiditySensor.py > /home/pi/python/`date | awk '{print $2 $3 $6}'`.csv [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target

    I have run:

sudo chmod 644 humidity-sensor.service sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable humidity-sensor.service sudo reboot

As far as I can find, this process should now run after the reboot but it doesn't and I'm not sure what I've missed.

Could someone point me in the right direction?
