    I Hate My Laptop

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 12:03 PM PST

So a few years ago I picked up a Dell Inspirion 15 7000 laptop. It got really good reviews and everyone on YouTube loved it. On paper it looked impressive, I7-7700 CPU, 8gigs DDR4 RAM, a dedicated NVIDIA 1050ti GPU but after I used it for awhile the glitter wore off.

It runs like absolute Doggie Doo Doo. Booting up can take several minutes sometimes. And even once it does get to Windows it can be awhile before I can even open anything. Programs like Steam and Chrome constantly give me a "Not Responding" message. Disk Usage seems to always be at 100%. There are a few games I own that are just futile to try to play. I have a couple websites and many times while I'm doing graphics or just working in Wordpress it just gets frustrating with the sluggish operation.

Anyway, I could go own but my question is: Is this what I can expect from a average laptop? Am I just spoiled to the Desktop that I'm use to? I really can't dish out $2000 for one of those monster gaming laptops. I've done everything I can find to make this thing work - reinstalled Windows, disabled every unnecessary start-up item I can, Assigned games to run with the GPU - but nothing seems to make it better.

I've made up my mind I will be getting a new laptop (especially since the wife said I could.....) within the next few months so any advice would be helpful on what to look for but, again am I expecting too much from an average laptop? I'll probably be spending around $1000.

    Thanks in advance .....

    how loud/noisy is this laptop?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:02 PM PST

I need a new Uni laptop and i would get student discount on this site, but i haven't found any reviews/stress test for this model and it has different specs than the regular version. Is there a way to find out how noisy the fan will be?

General opinions on this? specs, graphics,..?

MSI GF63 vs HP Omen 15

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST

    Hello,
Gonna buy a computer for some gaming and work in the Office packages. Will almost only play at the computer table where I have a 144hz screen and would therefore not say the refresh rate is crucial. Will mostly do office work while it's in handheld mode.

I can buy HP Omen for SEK 6,650 and MSI for SEK 6,900. Both are returns in good condition. It's around 900$ for those interested.

Here is some info about both:
    HP Omen:
    15.6 "60hz
    AMD Ryzen 4600H processor
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 6GB
    8 GB DDR4 3200mhz RAM
    256GB NVMe SSD
    2.3 kg weight

    MSI GF63:
    15.6 "120hz
    Intel® Core ™ i5-9300H
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max Q
    8 GB 2666mhz RAM
    512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD
    1.8kg

Looks like Omen has 15% better cpu and graphics card as well as better frame.
However, MSI has more space (though cheap to upgrade for about SEK 300-400 on the omen) and 120hz screen. Nice that MSI weighs 20% less as well.
Feels like Omen is the better choice when you consider that I have a screen standing, but which is the best buy in terms of bang for the buck? Maybe just 120hz screen is much more expensive which makes the MSI computer a better cap.
    Please leave your suggestions!

Is the Ideapad 5i worth 870€?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:32 AM PST

The specs are: i5-1135g7;mx450;8gb ram;512gb ssd. I'm asking this because there are no other laptops avaible with the newest intel chips and the mx450(atleast at this price point).

I'd be needing this laptop mainly for college but also gaming, which I know the mx450 can handle.

Or is there news on new laptops with other manufacturers coming out with similar specs/preferably with an AMD cpu.

    HP Pavillion

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:19 AM PST

I got a new HP Pavillion 15.6 laptop for Christmas. It is very thin and almost no area around the camera to place a camera shutter. I have not been able to find one that fits this model. Right now I'm using a piece of tape, but that looks ad hoc and I'm looking for one that will work. Anyone know of a product that will work?

Display brigthness automatically changes based on image.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST

Recently an annoying issue appeared where the display brightness automatically changes based on how bright the pixels on screen are. I seems to have appeared after a windows update

Most noticeable when switching between browsing in dark mode and playing a game. Even mid game if i swap between a dark menu and the main menu the screen becomes noticeably darker.

I have tried turning off "display power saving" in the Intel control panel, and i don't see an option to turn off adaptive brightness in window settings or advanced power settings>display from guides i've seen online. The laptop is an Acer nitro 5 with an Intel i7-9750H and GTX 1650 with a 60hz display.

Honestly i cant find anything about it online but i don't know why i would be the only one with the problem.

Recommendations for a college laptop under $2000 and minor 1080p gaming

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:09 AM PST

Tbh, I know nothing about laptops. But I do know about PCs, but I've been told a 1660 ti in a laptop in completely different then in a pc. So I'm not sure what laptops are the Best Buy for what I need. I want a 13-15 inch laptop that can handle 1080p gaming for non intensive games like rocket league. I'm also interested in 2 in 1 laptops if possible. What are your recommendations?!

Glossy Screen laptop with Matte Screen Protector vs. Matte Screen laptop (effectiveness at minmizing reflection/glare)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 12:38 AM PST

I'm looking for a matte screen laptop, but the ones I like in terms of specs all seem to have glossy screens.

Alot of people who bought the laptops I'm considering have bought matte screen protectors, and despite difficulty applying they have said it's been very effective. However I wanted to ask, will a matte screen protector fully create the matte effect (in terms of minimizing reflection/glare) as an original matte screen laptop would?

Also is it truthful to say in terms of matte screen production, in factories they start with a glossy screen and add a matte coatng to make a matte screen, and in effect the consumer adding a matte screen protector to their glossy laptop isn't too different from what happens in the factory anyway?

    Storage upgrade question

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 09:48 AM PST

    Hi, happy new year everyone.

Originally I wanted to post this question on r/buildapc but since it is about laptop storage update, then I guess it fits here.

So, I have Asus N580VD laptop with 256gb M2 SATA system SSD and 1tb SATA 3 hdd. I'm thinking of swapping the 1tb hdd with 1tb ssd (samsung 860 evo 1tb or crucial mx500 1tb) and/or swapping the current ssd with 500gb samsung 970 evo nvme. I found some tutorials showing that nvme m key ssd would work just fine. But I wanted to double check if it's a good idea. Or maybe it's better to swap just one drive.

Tl:dr I want to know if buying new SSDs for a three year old laptop is worth it.

    Thank you
