What's the word on these CHUWI laptops? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:50 AM PST I'm looking for something to replace my Acer R5 i5 7th gen with 12 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD. Really I'd like to keep my laptop, but the casing itself is failing, and many of the case screws will no longer thread - the golden nuts have busted loose. ... I mostly want something clean, quick, sleek, reliable, with a backlit keyboard and that feeling when the keyboard just feels nice to type on. I build gaming PCs but I'm not very familiar with the laptop market. An upvote for your thoughts? Thanks! These have grabbed my attention: 1) https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHUWI-HeroBook-Pro-14-1-in-Laptop-Windows-10-Intel-Dual-Core-8-256G-Notebook-PC/264920215298?hash=item3dae79af02%3Ag%3AKMkAAOSwfgpfXAUU&LH_BIN=1 3) https://www.chuwi.com/product/items/Chuwi-LapBook-Pro.html And currently in the lead: 4) https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHUWI-GemiBook-13-Laptop-Windows10-PC-2K-IPS-Intel-12-256G-SSD-Backlit-Notebook/164399252728?hash=item2646f584f8%3Ag%3AWSgAAOSwVs1fya0s&LH_BIN=1 [link] [comments] |
A budget laptop for undergraduate computer engineering student, range $800-$900 Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:46 PM PST I'm an undergrad currently in my junior year and my laptop just gave up on me. Now I'm looking for a new one but I'm on a budget. I'm looking for a piece with 16 gigs of memory running CuDA enabled graphics because I hope to work on parallel programming in the near future. I also want to take courses in data science, data mining, machine learning and web tech. So a good processing power would be nice. A CPU with an Intel i7 chip or equally powerful processor would be a bonus. I know it's a pain but I can't find anything :( It'd be a huge help if you guys could pitch in your inputs :) The Form LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:11 AM PST Hello Everyone! Thank you for the help. I currently own the Lenovo 5 laptop with has a RYZEN processor. I have been proxying my 4K videos in Davinci Resolve, which works great on its own, but I am still get very slow performance when I try to add overlays, text, callout nodes etc. The playback is painfully slow when I have a video and an animation node (such as a callout) on top of it. It has been making editing a lot harder and slower. See link below for specs. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08BB9RWXD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 I am looking to get a different laptop and came across the Lenovo 7, but it uses an i7 processor, but from what I have been reading Ryzen should perform better than an i7. See link below for the model I would be purchasing: Would I have the same issues with this new laptop? Or does anyone have a recommendation of a laptop in the $1500 range that would allow be to edit freely without lag in my playback? I have tried to research, but don't know the details on what parts work well together for a high performing laptop and how it correlates to video editing. Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much! Mobile workstation for video editing and CAD, £1200 GBP Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:47 AM PST Hi all. I've had a 2012 13" MacBook Pro (top spec model with the i7) since, well, 2012 and it's served me very well with an upgraded SSD and 16gb of RAM. This is purely for work, and it's been thrown into a bag almost daily and carried around the world, it's never missed a beat and still looks almost as good as the day I bought it. For most tasks it's more than adequate and I rarely find myself waiting for it to respond, even with lots of stuff open. Currently open I have two mail clients, Safari, Teams, Davinci Resolve, Powerpoint (with a 500mb presentation), Windows 10 in a VM with Soundweb Designer and it's still snappy. However, I'll be doing a lot more video editing in the future and the Mac's poor little Intel graphics card and old i7 just isn't enough - Resolve doesn't play back on the timeline smoothly with more than 2 layers. I don't do anything super intensive on Resolve, just basic stuff. It also struggles with complex CAD and rendering, as expected, and the 1280 x 800 screen is too small and low resolution. I'd get another Mac in a heartbeat as I love all the usability features I find myself missing on Windows 10 (and I use Win a lot at work on other machines!), like Quick Look, tabbed file browser, smooth gestures and scrolling, MagSafe power and responsive hotkeys for brightness etc. This 2012 machine's been totally reliable as well, only done 1 reinstall when I replaced the hard drive. A lot of the software I'll be running as part of a career change is very specialised and Windows only, so I'm looking for a Windows laptop. Tried running it on Parallels and it doesn't behave with mounting USB devices, and rebooting to Bootcamp is just clumsy. Shortlist is below. Happy to get a refurb machine with a warranty, trying to stay away from gaming laptops due to build quality. Legions are good apparently? Dell Precision 5530 with the i7-8850 and Quadro P1000 Anything else I should be looking at? Thanks!

Astounding laptop specs for the price - thoughts? Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:59 PM PST The model in question is this supposed Intel Whitebook "Gaming Notebook" that seems to be simply a barebones TongFang chassis with an exact Eluktronics MAG-15 design. In my opinion these specs are ridiculous for the price. It's a sale on NE however so not sure if it's a one time special, mistake, or will stay around this range for the future. I wanted to get the community's input and thoughts around this hardware for the pricepoint (as of writing currently 1200 USD) although not sure how long will stay that way. The item with the highest specs for price/ratio is this one - https://www.newegg.com/p/2WC-003C-00009?Item=9SIAA0SBB85243 Let me know what anyone thinks. Thanks for your input. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:29 AM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Looking for something around $1200-$1500 CAD ($1000-$1200 USD). Willing to go over if needed but I won't be doing anything intensive with it. Are you open to refurbs/used? I would rather not How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm a student so I'm looking for something that can take me through my undergrad and grad school. After that performance and battery life are important How important is weight and thinness to you? Not looking for a chunky gaming laptop Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I was thinking 13" but mostly to drop the cost Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing too intensive. If I'm not using excel and powerpoint for school, I'll be streaming Youtube or Netflix, and dabbling in games like Minecraft. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft but I only play like once a week and never for more than an hour Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I imagine an HDMI port is pretty standard. Im also fine with getting the HDMI adapter if a MacBook is suggested. I don't really care about touch-screen Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I tried scouring r/SuggestALaptop to find something for me but it just made me more confused. If you can't tell, Im not really a computer guy. Thanks in advance to everyone who leaves a suggestion, I appreciate it. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:41 AM PST I'm torn between the two. I understand that the two screens will display identical things but I don't know if the 14' will be tiring to my eyes. I always had 15.6 laptops but I find the 14' ones sleek and appealing to my aesthetics. The eye strain is what troubles me. Thoughts? Can you suggest any good laptops? I'm drawn to Matebook D15 / D14

Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:06 AM PST I'm looking for a new laptop. I'm gonna start a bachelor as a major in Computer Science in one year. I play games occasionally, none of which are technology intensive. I need the laptop to run (multiple) hacking tools, VMs (Kali), and I need to able to code (no heavy programs for coding). I was wondering which Lenovo Thinkpad would be the best pick. The E15 looks good to me, but I've seen a few pretty bad reviews. Thanksnin advance [link] [comments] |
laptop for light gaming and drawing! Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:56 AM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: I don't know exactly because I haven't asked my dad, but around $1000 USD, maybe up to $1500 USD. Are you open to refurbs/used? no 😣 i would, but my dad isn't How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? form factor > performance > battery life > build quality I definitely want a 2 in 1, I'm an artist!! It has to be compatible with a huion kamvas 16 pro(aka needs hdmi and usb, though DisplayPort is okay too, I'll get an adapter). The kamvas 16 pro is a screen drawing tablet. I don't mind if it feels low quality, as long as it actually runs well and isn't too delicate. I would like to be able to run 3D open world games(ok if they have to be on low settings), which I know might be a tall order for my price range but alas. Battery life I don't care much about. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. I don't mind if it's heavy and thick, or light and thin. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No! Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I have to run clip studio paint. I would like to run Maya 3D, and i would like to run games like Skyrim or RDR2, even if on low settings. My current computer can barely handle Minecraft, so any improvement is good. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Low settings are alright, higher are preferred but like I said, I know my price point is limiting. FPS... 24 at least. I don't know if that's high or not LOL Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It needs HDMI or DisplayPort, it needs to have an external pen with pen pressure(ok if it's an add on). Touch screen I don't mind if it's not, as long as it has a pen. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I feel like 2 in 1s don't make for the best gaming laptops, and I know that it may seem dumb to have both a screen tablet and a 2 in 1, but I want the ability to be portable with my art. Like I mentioned, if it needs low game settings to play smoothly then I'm alright with that! As long as they can run with minimal lag on low settings. If that's impossible for a 2 in 1 tablet, I'm okay with other suggestions too! But the 2 in 1 is heavily preferred ;; [link] [comments] |
