    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 09:18 PM PST

Does anyone have suggestions for laptop for casual video editing and everyday use (streaming, internet surfing)? My budget is $1000. My old laptop (pretty old) is very slow when editing video on DaVinci Resolve and looking for a replacement. Thank you in advance!

    Not too important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Video editing on DaVinci Resolve. Perhaps other programs on the future

Thoughts on this laptop for light gaming?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST

Im looking to get my gf a new laptop for some light gaming. She loves playing sims, shes been having more and more problems with her laptop that is older so I wanted to try and get her a new one and was wondering if this is decent for the price. Looks like everything she needs that will last her awhile.

Any advice for a new laptop?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 08:22 PM PST

Hi! I am looking for a new laptop, I used to have a HP i3 laptop that lasted me 6 years & unfortunately died on me last week (rip).

So I'm in need of a new one, I play League Of Legends mostly but may be interested in playing more demanding games (Valorant, MW, etc).

One thing I noticed on my old laptop was I couldn't share my screen (playing league via discord) I couldn't alt & tab, I couldn't really do much as it was incredibly slow for multitasking in that sense.

So basically I've been researching gaming laptops, I've found some nice i5 gaming laptops & have some basic knowledge of the specs but I was wondering if anyone could suggest a laptop for me which would be the best value for what I'm aiming to do.

    TL;DR

After a gaming laptop that can run League, Valorant, MW, etc smoothly, a laptop I can multitask on (sharing screen, alt&tab, etc with no freezing) I play for a long number of hours in a day so no overheating/low fan noise would be great & just generally very fast, haha!

I also LOVE the backlit keyboards I'm seeing with the laptops I've been researching so that would be a plus, many thanks if anyone could help!

Looking for a quality jack of all trades laptop

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:11 PM PST

    Total budget

About $1100-$1200USD but if i dont have to break the bank thatd be great

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Prefer new

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, build quality, form factor from most important to least

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not at all important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13-15 inch would be ideal but its not make or break

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Id like something that could run minecraft and pokemon emulators, outside of that itd mostly be used for streaming, web surfing, playing dvds, and some school work.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft and pokemon emulators on normal settings i guess? Idk i only ever really game on consoles. As long as they look decent and run well im content.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Id really like a simple open-close, non touchscreen laptop as opposed to those ones that like bend backwards and stuff.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Itd be nice if i could depend on this thing for atleast the next few years, im the kinda person still rocking a iphone 6s lol. Obviously technology by nature isnt future proof but if i could get a good five years plus out of this thing thatd be great.

I bought the Lenovo Y740 AND the Razer Blade 15, and I think they might both be going back...

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:41 PM PST

I'm driving myself crazy because I initially bought the Lenovo, but wasn't fully satisfied, so I picked up a 2020 Razer Blade 15 Base. Now I have two, and (at least) one needs to go back. The problem is, both have major pros and major cons.

    Lenovo Y740 Pros:

    • The display is butter-smooth. Rocket League on a 144htz monitor with g-sync is pure joy.
    • Opening the laptop with one hand is easier, because of the little heel on the back of the base which provides leverage to open the lid.
    • Benchmarks are showing better performance than the Razer, even though this is a 9th-gen intel vs 10th on the Razer (they both have RTX 2070 Max-Qs). Heaven Benchmark was 79.9 to Razer's 69.1. Same resolution and settings.
    • Runs MUCH cooler than the Razer. Much more comfortable to use on my actual lap. I'm typing this on the Lenovo and the fans are off. It's silent. Meanwhile the Razer is idling on the other side of the room, no programs open, and I can hear the fans. Yes I set them to automatic in Synapse.
    • I like the rear inputs for the power supply and other inputs, though that might be subjective for other people.
    • Keyboard feels better to me. Keys feel of a higher quality and are more sturdy-feeling to me. It's also quite a bit quieter than the Razer's keyboard as well

    Razer Blade Pros:

    • Trackpad is smooth like glass and doesn't waste space on dedicated hardware buttons for left click and right click.
    • Nice long power supply cord. I don't mind the power supply attaching on the side, as the input connection seems nice and durable.
    • I mostly love the build quality of the CNC aluminum body. Reminds me of a MacBook Pro, which is what I'm coming from previously. The 'Mercury' edition I got seems more professional and less child's gaming toy than the black edition, which at 37 years old, I greatly appreciate.
    • I do like the depth of contrast on the 4K HDR OLED monitor. Though I don't think I'm a fan of 4k resolution on a 15.6" screen. What's the point? You can barely tell the difference between 4k and 1080p at that size, and some software occasionally doesn't resize according to my windows settings and the text is absolutely unreadable at 4k resolution. It can't really game at 4k either (not at a high framerate and quality at least), so I would be gaming down at 1080p anyway. At least with the Y740, at 1080p you get 144htz vs the Razer's 60htz. The difference is absolutely noticeable.

    Lenovo Y740 Cons:

    • Trackpad feels cheap and gritty. This is strangely a huge deal breaker for me. If the Y740s trackpad felt like the Razer's I wouldn't even be posting this, because the Y740 would be the hands-down winner.
    • Webcam at the bottom of the screen is a terrible position.
    • The row of keys to the left of the keyboard is useless, and throws off my typing. I don't need macro keys, and I really don't need two dedicated buttons to turn the brightness of the keyboard backlight up and down. The other two keys I honestly don't know what they're for besides getting in the way.
    • Speakers in an attempt to reproduce bass, sound distorted sometimes
    • The power supply for this thing is HUGE. The brick is literally 1/3rd the size of the whole laptop. Though this hasn't annoyed me as much as I thought it might.

    Razer Blade Cons:

    • It was an open box discount, which initially was a pro, but I'm starting to think there's something actually wrong with it. Heaven Benchmark was showing the 2070 Max Q with 5500 MB video memory, instead of 6000 MB as advertised.
    • I'm dropping tons of frames on videos (particularly youtube). Display looks like crap as a result. I can't watch videos where the background is all juddery on pan shots. The Y740 144htz screen is MUCH smoother.
    • While the trackpad is beautifully smooth to use, it is slightly too big. I bump the trackpad and move the mouse a lot while typing.
    • Not a fan of the keyboard. I make a lot of mistakes as the keys are positioned slightly differently and I occasionally hit the keyboard bezel trying to find "." or "c" or sometimes even the spacebar.
    • The cooling design isn't ideal for use on my actual lap. It appears the cooling intake fans are on the bottom of the laptop. So resting it on my legs or on my bed blocks the fans and the laptop heats up quickly.
    • This thing gets HOT. Like, too hot to hold sometimes. That CAN'T be good right? Even for a gaming laptop? The Y740 gets hot while under load, but I'm not worried about it literally damaging the surface it's sitting on. One of the my main reasons for buying a laptop is so I get more work done in different locations like my bedroom and the couch. If I can only have the laptop on my lap for 30 minutes before I start to feel like I might be doing long-term damage to my reproductive system, it's not serving one of it's main purposes.
    • It has a RTX 2070 Max Q and and integrated Intel UHD chip? Why? I don't see the point of putting in an awesome graphics card as well as an integrated chip? I've had issues a few times where performance was terrible only to find that the integrated chip was being used instead of the RTX 2070.
    • Its fans are loud. Even while idling, the fans are audible and there's a bit of an oscillation sometimes.
    • The grilles covering the underside fans have a very close clearance between the actual fan blades. Holding the laptop in one hand, its easy to bend the grille a bit and it makes a grinding contact with the fan blades. That's an experience that removes quite a few points from the claim that the Razer Blade is the 'laptop for people who value build quality'. Nothing says lack of build quality like a grinding fan blade.

So needless to say, I've given both of these laptops a LOT of thought. I'm wanting my next laptop to be a device I'll love to use for the next few years, so I really want my purchase to be exactly what I want. If I had to choose between these two, and there were no other options, I would choose the Y740, but I hate the trackpad, webcam, and power supply.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a laptop that is basically the y740, but with a smooth glasslike trackpad like the Razer Blade, and a top-mounted webcam? Bonus points if the keyboard isn't shifted off-center of the laptop to make room for a row of useless 'gaming' buttons that only serve to make me miss the key I was trying to hit? Does an OLED 144hz monitor exist? That would give me a combination of the Y740s smoothness and the Blade's depth of color and contrast.

I can't decide if I should just try to get used to the shortcomings of the Y740, or return both the Razer Blade AND the Y740, and just continue my search for the perfect laptop. I have 10 more days to return the Razer Blade, and I believe about three more weeks to return the Lenovo (minus a 15% restock fee). Anyone have any suggestions? I'm at a loss.

A laptop for music production, video production, and gaming (gaming the least important)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 03:15 AM PST

    Budget: 1800 euro

    country : Ireland

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**1800 euro, Ireland
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**no
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**Performance is most important.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**Not that important.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**N/A
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**I use FL studios and plan on getting some orchestral plugins that take a lot of processing power. I also will be using Premier pro for video editing. And wouldn't mind getting some games on it also, but gaming is the less important factor.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**gaming not too important, but if possible GTA and RDR would be good. The last console I had was PS2 so any FPS setting will blow my mind.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**N/A
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**Just to reiterate, most important in music production, then video, then gaming. Gaming would just be an added bonus, Im not a gamer so dont expect amazing graphics ect.

Need help with a university laptop

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:39 AM PST

Looking for a laptop under $AUD1500 for video editing and everyday use

Does anyone have suggestions for laptop for university/everyday use (streaming, Microsoft office, R, MATLAB)

I was on a 13" MacBook Pro 2017, which was a gift, but it died about a week ago. This is my first time buying a laptop of my choice, would love to hear what you veterans have to say. Any help at all is much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1500 AUD, pref under 1000 AUD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Strictly new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance>build quality>battery life. Form factor not much of an issue, but I would like to avoid 2-in-1s, if possible.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not too important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" (was on a 13", would love to have a larger FHD screen)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No video editing or gaming of any sort. Just Microsoft office, R, MATLAB.

Budget: 1200 but by god if I don't have to spend my net worth don't make me.

Wants: Moderate gaming capabilities, 5hrs with no charge(not gaming), backlit keyboard, under 6lbs, I would really prefer if it wouldn't burn me while I use it(don't overheat).

Games: mostly Subnautica recently, Valorant, Dauntless, Osu!

Need a laptop ASAP: Durable build quality, 14", under $900

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 01:02 PM PST

My T450s, after 6 years of being dragged around the world, is finally done with life. I'm a freelancer so I need a replacement soon.

Located in Canada, but price in title is USD (so, roughly $1200 CAD)

I'm fairly nomadic (excluding COVID times) so it has to be durable enough to survive years of being flown around, shoved in backpacks, and handling different climates.

Primary uses: Way too much streaming, video editing, a Chrome tab addiction, some web dev. I don't care about battery life and I don't game. I care slightly more about graphics, and a lot more about it being powerful enough to not have a panic attack when I ask too much of it. Reliability matters. Around a 14" screen. Windows.

I was looking at the Lenovo Flex 5 because it has awesome specs for the price, but I'm worried the cost cut must be in the build quality. I'm slightly hesitant to go with something refurbished because of a bad experience, but I would definitely consider it.

    Suggestions for a Drawing Tablet/Laptop?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 08:08 PM PST

    Hi,

I am a Biology student, and I am receiving $750 from my university to buy something academic for school. If possible, I would like to spend all $750, since it goes away if I don't use it, and I'd be willing to supplement up to $200 for a big purchase. The price can include accessories if needed.

Ideally, I'm looking for a good drawing tablet (for taking notes, drawing molecules, making flow-charts, etc), that can also double as a second monitor when needed. I do not mind whether this means that the tablet can independently use the internet and open documents or if the tablet connects to my laptop as a true second monitor. I will be using it to play recorded lectures, open PDFs, browse the internet for research articles, and for Microsoft Word/Google Docs depending on my exact setup

If it is relevant, I currently own a Lenovo C930 that is running Windows 10.

Thank you so much for your help, and I apologize if this is not technically considered a laptop request - I'm not sure where else to ask!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~$950 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Able to be used as a drawing tablet and as a second monitor when needed
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very - just that it's small enough to be carried around in a backpack for ~30 minutes at a time without too much of a hassle
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      No
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Needs to be a drawing tablet of some sort, so touch screen and a good drawing pen is needed.

College Student Laptop Recommendation Under $800 USD??

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:15 PM PST

    Hi!

    • Total budget: ~ $1050 CAD (Canada)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Probably not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Hoping for a long battery life, touchscreen 2-in-1 and something that will last me 3-5 years, hopefully decent performance that will last me throughout the day.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are important for portability but I could def sacrifice if it was the perfect laptop otherwise.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 or 14 inch.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touch-screen, HDMI port (if at all possible), more than one USB port?
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I can be flexible with budget/requirements if you have a great recommendation! I'm your average university student, don't need anything for gaming or coding, but will need to be on my laptop throughout the day. Looked at the HP Envy x360 13 and ASUS Zenbook 14 but there's a lot of mixed reviews out there. Any help is super appreciated! Thanks :)

    Gaming/Coding/Studying/Video editing Laptop in Australia

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 07:22 PM PST

Hi guys, need a bit of advice with buying my next laptop, I'm a total newbie to the whole tech thing and would love some help.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1500-3000 AUD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes absolutely so if anyone has any higher budget suggestions feel free to add them and i can still try and see if i can get them reliably second hand

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance followed by battery life, followed by the toughness, and then quietness is still valuable and preferred but probably less prioritised, and then dont care about form factor as much.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important, 2.5kg or less is preferred, but if the performance makes up for it I dont mind

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, programming, and video editing Mostly just premiere pro and davinci resolve, plus photoshop. Gaming so far just involves rocket league, minecraft etc. but i would like to take this up a notch to some of the harder to run games. Im also planning on possibly studying software engineering this year(despite limited experience with coding and tech), so I need something that will be able to handle that.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to play cyberpunk on my laptop, im only planning on starting gaming once i get the laptop so i'm not sure at what setting quite yet, but I do love having good graphics.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Has to be reliable for sure, gonna be my multitasking unit for the next 4-5 years, and has to be able to handle a 100+ tabs(im notoriously bad at managing stuff), battery life is also important and a large screen isnt as much important to me as a good display quality and brightness. Needs to also be sturdy enough to take a few knocks

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thanks guys, this is my first time posting so i hope i did this correctly. Lmk if I did anything incorrectly. Cheers

Which specs/laptop for downloading large PDF files and converting them to Word?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:42 AM PST

    Hi

I am at university and due to lockdown I am accessing my reading online. As such I tend to download articles and books as PDF files. I often convert these to word files as I find it much easier to read in that format. As these are quite large (sometimes a 500-1000 pages) this process takes some time. I currently have a Dell Latitude 14" 5400 and I was planning to replace this laptop with a similar spec laptop but with a larger display, however, I am now thinking a little differently because this process of downloading files and converting them is taking a lot of time. What kind of specs would I need to enable the faster downloading of these files and faster converting off them to word? My current laptop has a i5 processor, 8gb ram and 256 ssd. What specs should I go for? Would I need a better processor or would it be sufficient to still get a laptop with and i5 (or AMD equivalent) and just up the ram and the ssd (I was thinking 16gb and 512 ssd) ? I am not sure which spec of the laptop would help the downloading and converting of these files so any advice would be much appreciated. I would also welcome any laptop suggestions. I need to have a good display and ideally 15.6" in size. I would like to spend a little as possible but could spend up to £1000.

How reliable is Acer nitro 5 2020(AMD)?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:44 PM PST

    Specs: ryzen 4600h, 60hz display .

So, I am low on budget and can't afford legion 5 or hp omen. I would want the laptop not have major hardware problems for around 3,4 years. If assuming low display won't be a problem and I will be using this for gaming, programming, virtual machine. So, 6 core CPU and upgradable ram, storage are good for me and they got good ratings, reviews everywhere. .

How reliable are they? Also, compare with hp pavilion gaming, gateway creator which has similar specs.
