    Rice advice!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:57 PM PST

    Hey all,

As a gnu/linux system learning exercise I am trying to configure a system to my liking. I just installed arch and some basic sofware (with qtile as my wm and urxvt as my terminal emulator). I have never gone in depth with setting up a system like this before. I don't have a great sense of the interaction between the programs and the various config/dot files.

Is there a logical order for configuring the system? Or even one that you have found helpful in the past? Specifically one that will make the most sense in learning.

    Thanks for your time!

Is there a way to pipe updating commands into lolcat?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:11 PM PST

Example, I want to pipe top or rclone --progress into lolcat but it doesn't continue to update. Is there a version or flag of lolcat that I need to use? Or can this just not be done?

'What is the UID of the daemon called uucp?'

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:32 AM PST

I just don't get this question, or know how to try to answer it.

What is the UID of the daemon called uucp?

    Context

I tried this, but it didn't return any output, and just returned to the prompt:

    [root@UWS /]# cat /etc/passwd | grep 'uucp'

I am using a custom build of JSLinux, which was prepared by our lecturer.

BTW, I had kind of an upsetting experience this morning, and am having difficulty concentrating, so please bear with me if I'm a bit 'slow on the uptake' today.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:08 PM PST

    Hi

I'm doing curl trough bash and need to extract the csrf token from http response.

I did curl address |grep LoginCsrfToken to get to the right line but I'm not sure how to extract the token itself. tried to find sed or grep examples but havent found. also I'm not so experienced with regex.

the http response looking like this.

    .... <br><br><br><br> <input type="hidden" name="LoginCsrfToken" value=YFKokjNJZPGuMpcxyGLcJ60K7eyrrUELUiHHkRs7o3l01goOG6oMlxhKbn46jXEF > ....

Can anyone help me with this? also if you know a guide on regex in bash that I can follow that would be great.

    Thanks

    Is Ubuntu spying on me?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:20 PM PST

Hey all. I've heard around the community about Canonical collecting data from it's users without them knowing.

I've also read that it's mostly in standard ubuntu and not so much in flavors like Kubuntu, etc

    What's this really about?

Down Sides To USB Portable Install

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:12 PM PST

I've been installing distros directly to 128G Samsung Fit Flash Drive and I'm curious about the downsides of this process. Obviously, I'm limited to USB transfer speeds, but the experience is very smooth, even on different laptops. What kind of performance issues should I expect? How trustworthy is this process over time?

    Ethernet refuses to work

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:34 AM PST

I have a laptop with an ethernet connection that doesn't work.

It is a Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet.

lsmod | grep alx shows that the alx and mdio modules are loaded

I tried plugging it in with several short cables directly to the router and it still refuses to work.

None of the pins of the port are bent or damaged, it isn't the cable since I tested many of them and I used another laptop to try those cables and they work.

    Now I have no idea.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:51 AM PST

Ive got both linux and win10 installed to my 128gb ssd. I had allocated a bit more space than i realised to my linux mint install, so i shrunk the volume by about 30gb. However, when i try to extend my windows 10 ntfs partition to add more space to it, it doesnt appear as available space. Any ideas?

Seeking webcam suggestions. I'm running Centos 7 and use Microsoft Teams(primarily), Zoom, and Webex.

My camera is recognized and working properly but can't get the mic to function. Both function properly on my Windows setup.

Netgear NAS goes Linux - How to use LCD mini-display, front button, fan control with linux?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:45 AM PST

I have recycled an old device (Netgear NAS --> https://www.storagereview.com/review/netgear-readynas-ultra-6-review-rndu6000 ) and installed Debian plus OpenMediaVault.

The device has at the front a small LCD mini-display to show with the netgear software (also some kind of linux) different status information.

And additionally it has at the front a small button to start actions when defined in the netgear software.

The netgear software was also able to control the fan somehow together with the BIOS. The upper fan was replaced from me, because the old one was to loud. I have not yet dared to replace the power supply fan because of high voltage etc...

I already tried to control the fan speed with fancontrol but the program says it is not possible. In the BIOS I can see the fan speed but can't control anything. Temperature sensors are only available for CPU cores according to lm-sensors program.

On the mainboard there are some unused connectors "J3 - 10pins"; "JP7 - 7pin" (I don't know what these port are for) and an unused COM port.

Additionally the device has 128 MB flash memory onboard which contains the netgear software, and probably there is a way to find out / export how they controlled the LCD mini-display, the button at the front and the fan control...

They are also using a very old linux system and so I think it is somehow possible to extract the needed program / config files. But how do I know for what I'm looking for on their disk? The flash memory is vfat file system but in the openmediavault webview I can't see any files / folders.

But I'm not experienced enough how to do that....

Does anybody know how I gain control over:

    1. The LCD mini-display at the front
    2. The front button
    3. The fan control

    With debian / openmediavault?

Or how could I find out how Netgear does that on linux?

P.S.: Interesting probably for someone with a Netgear NAS with malfunction, I was able to open my Netgear X-RAID with OpenMediaVault and access all files without issues.

    VAN 138 error on Valorant

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:50 AM PST

So the title might not be related, but to explain; I'm dual booting Windows 10 and Linux Mint Cinnamon 20. Anytime I run Valorant on Windows 10, I'll be able to play for a few minutes, but then an error would occur mid game.

Forgot the full error but it goes like this: "Connection Error. VAN 138"

I searched Error Codes in Valorant and it says that VAN 138 is an error code thrown when Valorant or Vanguard is run through a virtual machine. (I was absolutely livid when I saw this, ngl)

So, does dual-booting affect this in any way? Is Vanguard (Valorant's Anti-cheat) Kernel based? Or am I overlooking something?

I was using popcon-largest-unused to find packaged to uninstall but I found 2 near the top called linux-image-4.19.0-12-amd64 and linux-image-4.19.0-6-amd64

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:27 AM PST

This is the raw output from it

    263251 linux-image-4.19.0-12-amd64 262512 linux-image-4.19.0-6-amd64

But I'm using 4.19.0-13-amd64 according to uname -r so would it be safe to uninstall those old versions and why do they still exist?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:04 AM PST

so I installed two version of the same theme, tried to restart the gdm.service but it was unsuccessful so i rebooted manually. Now it fails to boot into gui mode.

I can boot into rescue mode but it mounts the drive as read only. Do i need to reinstall the OS?

I get the following error reported in journalctl:

pam_systemd (gdm-launch-enviroment:session): Failed to create session: Start job for unit user-42 failed with 'canceled'

A simple Linux distro that works on really old machines?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:50 AM PST

So a few months ago I switched to Ubuntu and I'm loving it, I'm running it on my somewhat modern laptop and it's running great, so I'm no Linux expert and that's why I chose to ask here. My mom has had a really old version of Linux Mint for a long time on her old PC and I want to install a new OS for her. She needs the pc just to listen to music, scroll through images, browse the web, and generally light stuff like this. The PC has very outdated specs so I'm not looking for anything heavy, and it needs to be pretty simple to use. I've been thinking about putting Ubuntu on that machine as well but I'm worried that the PC can't hande it, mind you the machine has been running Linux Mint 16 Petra (I think) without any major problems. What do you suggest?
