I couldn't get a job, so I sold candy bars to build be a gaming pc.

Hello gamers, this is Carmelo (sophomore in high school), and I'm going to tell you guys how I was able to get my first gaming PC at age 15. My friend Michael and I were into computers since we were in middle school and we always talked about getting one. In the middle of the 9th grade year (January, 2020) we finally had enough of not having a computer so we started selling candy bars to earn one. On our first day we were outside of Sam's club selling candy bars about 1.5 hours in my friend Michael left because he had given up on the idea. Michael was a very lazy guy who wanted things, but never liked putting the effort into to doing it. Me however, was fixated on getting that computer I wanted so bad. 2 hours after Michael left, I had officially sold my first box of candy bars ($50 plus some tips they gave me). This was nowhere near enough money to get a PC, so I had to take $30 dollars out the $50 to get a new box of chocolate. With this method, I could make $20 profit each box that I sold. The goal was $500. After about 3 months of walking around my city selling chocolate. Constantly getting kicked out of places. Sitting in 1 spot for 5+ hours, I had sold over 12 boxes of chocolate and made just a little over $600. I know 3 months is a long time but keep in mind Covid-19 made it harder, I just never gave up no matter what. After about 2.5 weeks I had a full blown pc. I was so excited. I felt bad for my friend Michael, so I let him play on it sometime. Here are the specifications:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/W3VvW3

Thank you guys for listening and no matter what, hard work will eventually pay off.

Edit: I was on a google doc typing this and the end didn't paste over here

Is a 3600x and 2070 super good combo?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:38 AM PST

I'm thinking of building a pc. I just wanna know if there is any bottleneck, I don't understand much about this.

And what about games? Can it run games fine? It doesn't have to be 4k but can it run like at 120fps 1080? I'm talking mostly modern games, I play a bit of everything.

[Build Help] Get Ryzen 5 5600X or Ryzen 7 3700X

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:53 AM PST

Both seem to be around the same price, $300. Should I get the new Ryzen 5 5600X that's coming out this week or get the older Ryzen 7 3700X? I'm a noob trying to build a gaming pc.

    The best current 1440p monitor?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:12 PM PST

Hi guys, been looking for a really high spec 1440p monitor with the best colour panel and Hz with G-Sync etc but I'm pretty out of the loop with 1440p monitors.

I'm looking to get a RTX 3080 or 3080ti if they ever come out with one that is lol...

My dad got a Samsung G9 5120x1440 240hz QLED and I love the look of the panel but it's really buggy atm from what I've seen and I play games like league of legends etc and apparently it doesn't run properly on that Aspect ratio.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Is the GTX 1660 Super better than GTX 1070 in machine learning and Video rendering?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:03 PM PST

Hello, I'm having a hard time deciding if i should go for the 1660 Super or the 1070 for Machine Learning, Video rendering, 3D etc. The 1070 has much more Cuda cores than the 1660 Super (1920 vs 1408 Cuda cores) while the 1660 Super has GDDR6 vs the 1070 having GDDR5.

1660 super is slightly expensive in my area than the 1070.

Please give me suggestions (and also tell me about the 1660Ti)

    Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra

    G.Skill TridentZ RGB 2x8GB DDR4-3200

    Corsair RM850x

    NZXT H510 Elite

    NZXT Kraken X63 280mm

    Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080

    Samsung 970 Evo 1TB

I picked out these parts a while ago, and I know that there's new gen processors and GPUs out now so I was wondering if there was anything I could do to make this better. Thanks!

Final parts help/opinion (GPU / CPU / MOBO)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:34 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I'm building myself a low-mid budget pc (around 800-900 euros) to play current games at 60 fps+ 1080p resolution. I've been gathering parts for a while now and the only ones missing are the major pieces (GPU, CPU, MOBO) and this is the list of what I already have:

    Case - NZXT H510 Black [Gift] ;
    PSU - Corsair TX650M 80 Plus Gold [ 66,52 € ] ;
    RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws 16 GB (2x8) DDR4 - 3600MHz CL16 [ 98,40 € ] ;
    Storage 1 - SSD M.2 2280 Western Digital Black SN750 500GB ; [ 84,90 € ] ;
    Storage 2 - HDD Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200Rpm Sata III 256MB [ 60,90 € ] ;
CPU Cooler - Going to use the AMD stock and see if it's enough since I wont overclock.

Total investment until now: 310 Euros (500 left, give or take)

I'm going to pull the trigger on my last 3 parts on black friday and I'd like you guys to give me your advice since I'm not sure if what I want to get is spot on or not. Please remember that I already bought the parts I mentioned before and my final total budget is limited (800-900 euros).

GPU > I was thinking on going for the Gigabyte 1660 Super OC model since I can get it for 250 euros from where I'm from and it looks like the best fit for my budget. An RTX 2060 6gb would be sweet but it's 310-330 here... If I can snatch one for 250 during black friday, that's what I'll get. Not really sure if that's realistic or not...

CPU > I'll go with the Ryzen 3600. It simply seems like the best bang for the buck choice. I already have the fast ram and it will be a great all-around since I wanna game a lot and use some heavy load programs from time to time. I really don't want to invest on a cooler since I wont overclock it. I'll be fine, right? I was a bit disappointed that the 5600 non X wasn't announced since it will probably be released at 185-220 euros which is what I'm down to invest on a CPU but if I keep waiting for new releases, that's goning be a never ending cycle.

The MOBO... > I don't want to cheap out on it for future proofing reasons. I want to be sure that down the road i'll be able to put in a 5000 series or 6000 series on it with no problem. Having enough ports and pci 4.0 seems like a great idea also (I know I won't make use of it but it's just something nice to already have). I think that the ATX Gigabyte B550 Aorus will be a great fit, both in specs and ascetics. I can get it for 145 euros. I'll have to admit that I'm a little confused here, the MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus also seems like a great choice and the prices are really close....

That's it! I know that I could've cutted out on some things like the PSU or the case and bought a better GPU or something along those lines but in my opinion, since I won't be upgrading for a long time, I wanted to have something that felt balanced where nothing evidently "sucked".

Please give me your opinions if you think I should get a different, CPU, GPU, MOBO and if you think this build looks nice for its price.

    Thanks a lot!

Considering my first PC build. Looking for advice on optimising price/performance.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:46 AM PST

Hi, I've put the build below together on PCPP. I'm trying to build something that'll run recent games at 1440p and 60+ fps, and also be able to handle heavy data analysis workloads (hence the extra RAM). My question is, since I'm not aiming for a 4k 200fps rig (at least not right now), are there some concessions I could make to save some money on this build?

    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

H510 Elite - Case noise due to fans

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:10 AM PST

Hey guys. I have a few questions regarding case noise in a NZXT H510 Elite case. I have the following fan and cooler setup:

    • One 120mm NZXT AER RGB 2 fan at the back of my case
    • One 140mm NZXT AER RGB 2 fan at the top of my case
    • Two 140mm NZXT AER RGB 2 fans at the front of the case
    • NZXT Kraken M22 liquid cooler at the front of the case

I previously had the Kraken M22 installed at the back of my case, but for aesthetic purposes i decided to move the liquid cooler to the front of the case.

    Here comes the frustrating part:

Since re-installing the Kraken M22, it sounds like the case makes more noise than it did before. The thing is tho

    1. I don't know this for sure, because i hadn't checked my case noise in NZXT CAM before re-installing
    2. I don't know what a 'normal' db level is when it comes to case noise.

The case made 64-66db noise after reinstalling. I then tweaked some setting to bring fan speed to 20% and now it's sitting at 60db, but still producing a noticeable sound Is this normal? How much sound is you guys' setup (preferably this specific case) producing?

Interesting to note: if i turn off the fans at the back and top, case noise stays steady at 60db. If i completely turn off the two front fans, my case noise drops to 50db and i have the most silent setup.

Ram speed really worth investing in ?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:43 AM PST

I'm building a pc with the new AMD 5950x and 6900xt and was wondering if I should go for 4000mhz ddr4 ram or just stick with something like 3200mhz? There's quite a price difference. Would I be good with 4x8gb, this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/362982790712

I've heard having too much ram can slow the system down. I've also heard some processors will perform better with higher ram speeds and with other processor's the ram speed doesn't really matter.

Reuse 5 year old PSU for new Zen 3 / RTX 3070 build? + Motherboard recommendation

I'm not sure if I should reuse my 5 year old be quiet! L8 Pure Power 630w 80PLUS Bronze PSU or if I should just get a new one? I've read that the recommended lifespan for PSUs is 5 years due to capacitors going bad - is this still the case?

Also I'm really out of the loop when it comes to motherboards - can you guys recommend me one for ZEN 3? I dont need anything special like wifi/bluetooth etc

Sidenote: I already managed to get the rtx 3070 and the ram.

Only thing im not sure about is the cpu, should i wait until the ryzen 5000 release next week (i dont want to spend much more). Will the ryzen 7 3700x run well with a rtx 3070 in the coming years? I intend to play on 1080p and in the near future 1440p.

Feedback is welcome, thanks a lot.

My new Gaming PC, could you pls look and tell me if you would change something?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:06 AM PST

Hey so I am building a new Gaming PC for 1440p and 144hz and I came to the conclusion of this build:

    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/Iceqbe/saved/hbDsLk

Regarding RAM (all are DDR4-3600 CL16):

    I was deciding between G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (100€) / 32GB (150€) and the Crucial Ballistix 16gb (80€ but NOWHERE available) / 32 GB (150€).

I cant find the Crucial 16gb anywhere (amazon keeps delaying when it could be delivered) and 100€ for the Ripjaws 16gb dont seem worth it when you can get twice for 50€ more.

    Regarding PSU:

I get this one from my Mom cause she gets my "old" PC and I am deciding between 650w(90€) or 750w(110€) to be more futureproof.

    Regarding CPU:

I am thinking of buying the Ryzen5-3600 now, cause the new Ryzen 5- 5600x is probably out of my budget and then when everyone moves to AM5 DDR5, I maybe can get one of the 5000series for less. :)

My Budget was 1300€ and without buying the PSU I am nearly exactly at that price. (PartPicker doesnt show all Shops for germany)

    Regarding Case:

I really liked the PureBase 500dx but I need at least 2 USB-A on top so its out of contention. So I thought about the P400A, with the 3 Front Fans, would you recommend buying a silent wing 120mm for rear exhaust/top exhaust or should the 3 intake be enough?

    Any help is appreciated <3

Anyone have any recommendations for the most plain and simple looking rtx 3080?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:18 AM PST

Currently running a Zotac 2060 which looks fairly simple with just a white logo without any gaps where you can see the PCB or electronics. If I can't find anything I'll probably end up with a founders edition, even though I hate the power connector location.

    Cloning M.2 NVME Drives

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:26 AM PST

Hey everyone, I currently have a 1TB Intel 660p M.2 NVME on a Asus B450i motherboard that has two M.2 NVME slots (front and rear of board). I just purchased a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVME to completely replace the Intel. I'll need to clone everything over, including the OS.

I'm wondering if there are any systemic differences in the cloning process between these two methods:

    1. Install the Samsung in the rear M.2 and use the Samsung Data Migration software to clone the Intel to the Samsung drive. Remove the Intel and swap in the Samsung after. More work, requires taking out motherboard to access the rear M.2 slot.

    2. Plug in the Samsung via a Sabrent M.2 NVME external enclosure (USB 3.1) and use the Acronis cloning software (software comes with enclosure) to clone the Intel to the Samsung drive. Remove the Intel and swap in the Samsung after. Much easier, since the M.2 NVME external enclosure can run off USB 3.1. Note: Samsung Data Migration will not work via this method since it doesn't recognize the enclosure as a Samsung product.

Would either of these cloning methods yield the same result on the Samsung drive?

Thinking of taking on my first ever build after some convincing from you all and have some questions.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:08 PM PST

I'm thinking of taking on my first ever build for my wife who's very into photography and eventually wants to dabble in audio/video editing too. I have a ton of questions so I thought I'd start with these. She primarily runs Lightroom classic, and photoshop, and eventually a audio/video equivalent.

    1. Should I go with an intel 10700K or 10900k? (Or something else?) And why?
    2. I've seen mixed advice on GPUs and considering GTX 1660, GTX 1660 super, RTX 2070 super, and RX 5700 XT. Any thoughts and why?
    3. Is $800 too much to spend on the RTX 2070 super, let alone any GPU given her needs?
    4. For a total beginner with zero experience, what is a reasonable amount of time I can expect to spend on this
    5. Will I need a corded mouse/keyboard for the initial set up, or will a wireless with dongle work?

    Thanks!

Edit: if people like the 10900k better, is it worth the extra ~$175?

Friend is getting triple my FPS with nearly the same specs

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:20 PM PDT

I upgrade my PC and I now have a Ryzen 5 3600x, GTX 1070 ti, 16gb ddr4 ram on an ASRock b550m and an nvme SSD.

My friend got a Ryzen 7 3700x, RTX 2060, 16gb ddr4 ram, and an nvme SSD. He is getting around 300 fps in Sea of Thieves and 400 fps in Minecraft on 32 chunks while I get around 70 on the same graphical settings in Sea of Thieves, and ~60 on 32 chunks. Any insight as to why there is such a vast difference? He also had his professionally built while I, on a much tighter budget, installed my own motherboard and all its components. Thanks for your time!

Edit: Thanks for all the replies, I'm sure my friend wasn't telling me something or didn't know he was playing on a low resolution.

Haven't install windows, booted up the first time fine, after that, I can't enter bios again.

Hello guys, I just built my first pc and it booted up the first few times just fine when I tried to turn the pc on. After that, I plugged my usb that had windows to the usb port and booted it up again, this time, it only showed the screen that said "press del to enter settings" with the TUF gaming logo but I couldn't get into the bios screen. I tried again and again but nothing seems to change. I have no idea why this is happening and I would really appreciate any help I can get. Thank you!

    Opinions on First Ever Build

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:35 PM PST

Hello, all. I've been saving up to build myself my first PC, and while I think i've finally found the right parts, I would like to hear opinions from more seasoned builders. This is also my first post on the sub.

For the CPU, I wanted to go with a Ryzen 5 3600, however I intend to run a macOS KVM on Linux, so it would be a big benefit for me to have integrated graphics so I can properly pass through the AMD GPU to the KVM without losing the ability to use Linux itself. My main choices were the Ryzen 5 3400G or the Core i5-10400, and between those two, it seems Intel's is better so I chose that. I would have preferred to stick with AMD, but I do need an iGPU and I'm not sure waiting for the 4000 series to be available for builds would be worth it.

I'll attach a table of the parts I chose down below. Any opinions or suggestions are welcome!

    Obelisk - PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel Core i5-10400 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor $174.99
Motherboard MSI MPG B460I GAMING EDGE WIFI Mini ITX LGA1200 Motherboard $149.99

Ryzen Threadripperre workstation for Bioinformatic works using CentOS

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:30 PM PST

    Hello,

I am looking for computer parts to build a complete workstation for bioinformatics works. The budget is less than $3000.

I am wondering about the AMD Threadripper 3970X 3.7 GHz 32-Core Processor or the AMD Threadripper 2990WX 3 GHz 32-Core Processor.

Are there any significant differences between these two CPUs?

Is it worth to put $500 more for the 3970X instead of the 2990WX?

Which one is better for CentOS.

The memory will be 8 x 16 Gb = 128 Gb for intensive workloads. The hard drive will be 1 TB M2.

I will not do the imaging works, therefore, a general GPU is fine.

My purpose is a stable workstation that can serve me for at least 4-5 years with many DNA alignment tasks as well as basic calculation tasks using R or Linux based software.

Can you please help to recommend a fitted budget build that I can make this Thanksgiving?

The estimated aim is to generate about 50-100 GB of sequence per week. I have several portable hard drives that we will build a NAS later.

Thank you so much for your advice.
