I want to block internet access on my smart TVs but still have them function with HomeKit etc. is this possible?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:20 AM PST

Pretty much the title. I am looking to control these TVs via HomeKit (mainly this) and Google assistant without them having access to the internet but still function while they are on my local network and receiving commands from HomeKit or Google Assistant.

I have a TCL android tv and I currently use it only as a display attached with the newest chromecast with google tv as I don't want the tv be connected to the internet for all the tracking/advertising reasons etc.

I have a pi-hole set up, and I also have homebridge set up.

What is the correct way for this TV and a VIZIO tv in the same scenario to show up on my network without accessing the internet and is it possible to control these TVs in this manner without giving them access to the internet?

I hope this is the right sub for this question. Any help is appreciated.

Is it possible? 2x 100 Mbps connection over one telephone cable?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:55 AM PST

    Hey all!

Question: Is it possible to run two separate ethernet signals over one old telephone (!) cable?

I have a house where I would like to provide some basic network infrastructure. Unfortunately the house does not have proper cat cables mounted in the walls. Instead it has a fair amount of telephone cables. The eight strands are shielded. The strands and pairs are not.

I demouted all telephone jacks and patched all eight strands of one cable to cat.6a network jacks for testing. With the help of a gbe switch and cat.7 cables, I plugged two notebooks together and tested the connection. It gave me "only" a 100 Mbps connection (transfer rate was about 10 MB/s ), which is totally fine. Since I would only need four out of the eight strands I would like to patch 2x four strands on my patch-panel per cable and install double network jacks in the rooms. Unfortunately I am not sure if the poor quality of the cables will cause problems, when there are two different signals over one cable. Does anybody have experience wich such a setup? Could I work? It would be no problem, if a the transfer rate would decrease.

I don't want to install proper cat.7 cables, because it is not that important for me. But since I do not use the telephone cables anyway, I would like to make some use out of them.

Have a great day all, and thank you!

Need replacement router for Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 R6700v2

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:36 PM PST

Hi all, my Nighthawk R6700V2 has been dropped many times and has been having issues where it loses internet connection and I have to restart it to reconnect to the internet. Might be a good time since it is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Not sure what is new now-a-days since I bought the Nighthawk such a long time ago, any help will be appreciated.

I checked out Ubiquiti and they have soooo many products I'm lost in figuring out what I need or which models to check out... is it UNIFI or AMPLIFI that I should look at? https://www.ui.com/products/#default

    Provider: Xfinity comcast

    Speed: 100 mbps

    Modem: Netgear CM500

    Powerline: TP-Link AV1000

Edit1: Just found out about custom firmware, looks like the R6700 V2 is not supported according to the https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/

Edit2: Found custom firmware from OpenWrt, is it worth playing around with to see if my router has less issues? https://openwrt.org/toh/netgear/netgear_r6700_v2

    Connecting VR headset to router

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:10 AM PST

    Hi :)

I want to stream games from my PC to Oculus Quest 2 wirelessly via router. The common way is to get dedicated router for this, connect it via Ethernet cable to your main router, then create access point and connect your PC via Ethernet and VR headset via Wi-Fi 6 to this dedicated router. I've made a scheme to make it more clear https://ibb.co/27Fvd2x

My problem is that my main router is on the attic and it would be a bit problematic to connect routers trough Ethernet. I wondering if there is some option to connect routers trough Wi-Fi connection? I've made a scheme for this as well https://ibb.co/sm1hv0F

Is there any possibility to get devices connected like on the second draft?

Wires through a drywall in rented apartment

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:28 PM PST

Sorry if this is not strictly for this forum....

I am living in a rented apartment. I will probably be here for a few more years at least.

I want to put some wires through a internal wall. Was thinking of using a hole saw to put a hole through the wall and feed the wires through. The wall is a internal drywall. Would this be easy to patch up when I'm leaving the apartment? Would you be able to tell that there has been a hole cut into the wall?

If anyone has done this and has some advice, then it would be appreciated! Thank you.

Sites Blocked on Wired Connections But Not on Wifi

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:59 PM PST

The title, I live in an apartment building and I didn't choose my ISP. There are some sites, mostly nsfw ones, that I can't connect to when on a wired connection (ethernet). However, they are not blocked when accessing them on my phone on wifi. Is this a router problem? How do I fix it?

If this is the wrong subreddit please point me in the right direction, thanks for the help

    Dumb questions about Mesh WIFI

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:24 AM PST

I'm using Fibre to the Building (FTTB) internet from a company in Australia you never heard of (called TPG). The free router provided works fine, but due to unusual layout of my apartment, the router is extremely ineffective, WIFI dead spots everywhere.

I want to use WIFI Mesh to solve this, 2 dumb questions:

My current router is TP-Link AC1600 Wireless Dual band gigabit VoIP VDSL/ADSL modem router

    1. This company's FTTB seems to be very "picky" about the router. I cannot replace this router with another one. So can I get a mesh system without replacing the original router?

    2. Is there any brand and model you can recommend?

    10gb network exterior run

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:01 PM PST

    Hey,

I've currently got ethernet cables trailing through the house which I'd like to tidy up!

My house is brick and mortar with plastered walls, no drywall, do realistically I have to run cable through the wall to the outside and then round to where I want it.

The place I have the biggest problem with is the media area. This is where the Internet comes in (and expecting to get gigabit soon so want a dedicated cable for this), and I'd like room for expansion. The problem is, running several cables starts to get messy when they have to go outside.

So, I'm wondering about 10gb. As one 10gb cable is equivalent to 10x gigabit cables, I'm wondering if this, hooked up to a switch on the end, would deal with the issue? It's not ideal, I'd much rather run each cable to the patch panel in my garage, but I'm trying to be practical.

If this would work (I could either run two or just use vlans to separate the post modem, pre router Internet connection from the rear of the network), where do I even start? I've never dabbled in 10g before, I'm going to assume fiber is a no go, as I won't be able to terminate it myself, so should I run 6a? Then how do I get 6a onto an sfp+ port? This is where I get a bit lost!

    Any advice welcome!

    Thanks

    Multiple Wireless Access Points

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 08:05 PM PST

If multiple devices are sharing a single AP, they can run into bandwidth issues. But if the circuit into the home has much higher bandwidth than a single AP provides, couldn't you use multiple APs so each device can have its own AP and get the full bandwidth possible? For instance, if you have a Gbps circuit, and each device can get up to 100Mpbs on a single AP, then you could theoretically have up to 10 APs connected to a switch. Then, instead of all devices in the home sharing one AP, each can use its own AP and get the full 100Mbps. Does that make sense? Would the APs interfere with each other?

    Getting 5mbps on Gigabit Internet...

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 08:04 PM PST

I just finished building a new PC and found out my download speed is 5mbps. Took out my old PS4 and plugged it in via ethernet to see the same download speeds. Double checked the ethernet cord and tried a new one as well, same results. I checked my connection and found out it's meant to be up to 1gbps. Anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm going to get ahold of my ISP tomorrow to see if i'm being scammed.

Help troubleshooting my :( slow :( internet

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:51 PM PST

Hey everyone, I searched the sub but didn't exactly find what i was looking for.

I need help diagnosing why my internet is so :((( slow.

We pay for 150mpbs down, routinely test for 20-1mbps down speeds. Fine for one person, but with two of us wanting to stream or zoom call it's impossible.

Current modem/router combo unit is Motorola MG7315 (docisis 3.0, 8x4 channel). Up to date, reset on my end and by ISP recently.

We live in a apartment complex in a urban area, southern California (if that's relevant)

Should i look into my modem/router as the issue or pay up for more internet?

What combo unit (or separate units) do i need for better speeds? Was looking at motorola MG7700, Netgear Nighthawk C7000, or Arrus AC2350 should i buy?

    Thanks so much!

Trying to do a wired connection without big ass ethernet running around the house?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:01 PM PST

So as the title suggests, I'm trying to run a wired connection, but the modem is upstairs and I am downstairs. It's not ideal to run a big cable around the house for aesthetic purposes. I got these electric outlet ethernet adapters that will give me a wired connection with up to 1000 mbps. Well, that's just not the case. I test it and I'm getting about 20-30. So I looked online and found these adapters called MoCA adapters and it looks like they use a coax cable that i split between the modem and the adapter and then connect the other adapter to the coax outlet in the room I want. Would this result in similar speeds as if I'm connected directly to the modem? If not, what other options do I have?

PoE+ but no data link after converting from RJ45 connector to punchdown patch panel

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:39 PM PST

Previously, I had 9 outdoor shielded ethernet cables running through my house to my network centre and had them connect directly to the ports on the router/switch via their RJ45 connectors. However, this was ugly, so I decided to clean up the mess of cables in the basement by installing a wall mounted rack and add a patch panel to it.

I snipped off the old connectors, pulled back the shielding, snipped the solid core, and terminated the wires per T568B into the patch panels. It took a while but I seemed to have done it successfully on all the cables… except for one.

The one exception is an outdoor-mounted PoE camera (Unifi G3 Flex) which shows as getting PoE (and I can even see the IR LEDs on) but no data link! The other PoE devices (including a few more G3 Flexs) work well.

I stripped back more of the cable (about 9cm) of the problematic device, and re-terminated, but still no success. I tried: different cables from the patch panels; different ports on the switch; re-terminated on a different port on the patch panel; I even tried T568A termination, just in case. No luck.

Is this likely an issue with the cable at this point? What could I have done to damage it? Knowing that PoE works, is there anything I should focus on to debug the problem further? Can I use a multimeter (I don't have an ethernet tester) to debug the pins/wires from only one end?

I still have some slack in the cable, so I can spare more length, but I don't want to continue before having a better idea of what to do.

Modem / internet question regarding coax

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:37 PM PST

So we have the main cable modem downstairs with a router attached to it. All the (gaming) computers are upstairs. Is there a way to get internet upstairs without running a 200 ft cable up here?

Can the cable company hook up an extra modem upstairs on the coax/cable line in my room? Or do they have other tricks they can do with the cable line in my room in order to give me ethernet from our main modem? Thanks!

5ghz suddenly not showing up on my RAX80

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:24 PM PST

I've been using a netgear rax80 for over a year now without any real issues. I did have some in the beginning with connectivity but a simple rollback of the firmware resolved that. I went out of town for a few days and when I got back I noticed that all my devices connected to the 5ghz band were no longer connected. I tried to forget the connection on my phone and then reconnect but then I noticed that I can't even see the SSID consistently. It shows up sometimes and then disappears. When it is there and I try to connect to it, it just kinda acts like it's connecting and then just gives up and connects to the 2.4ghz band.

    I have tried:

Checking router settings, everything looks the way I left it. I even tried with AX turned off and on. (I don't have any AX devices)

Hard reboot of the router, did not resolve.

Changing the SSID to something simple like a single word.

Changing the channel to another non-DFS channel.

    Updating to latest firmware.

None of these solutions worked or even managed to change the symptoms at all. Any idea what could have even caused this when no one was connected to my network for the 4 days I was gone?

Upgrading from router given to us from ISP

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:10 PM PST

We have a wr-5887 we got from our ISP but it is now 6 years old and we have outgrown the capabilities of the little box. We put up extenders but they just add latency and did little to help speeds. We have 3 virtual assistants, an internet doorbell, 2 desktop computers (one being used as a media server), 2 laptops, 5 phones, 3 smart TVs and other assorted devices such as guest phones. Of course this has taken our router to it's knees. What's a good replacement in the $100-200+ range? Our house is 2400ft² and all 1 level.

    Keystone connectors not working.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST

So I'm wiring my workspace at home, running cat6 cable. I terminated both ends, used the B wiring pattern, of my cable with rj45s and plugged one end into my computer, other into my router and internet was delivered, great! I cut the extra length of cable from the end that was plugged into my computer and made a long patch cord since I had loads of extra cable. With the freshly cut end I attached a Keystone connector in the B wiring pattern and punches all my wires down. Test my patch cable alone, tester shows the wires are lined up properly. Plug one end of patch cable into Keystone, put my line tester on the other end of my patch cable and attached the other tester part to the end of the cable from the router. Nothing on the tester, lights don't light up at all. Test my patch cable again with the two parts.of the tester patch cable is fine. Redid the Keystone, no change, switched Keystone connectors and same result no connection. I'm using Cat6 keystones, so it's not that. Thoughts cuz I'm stumped, I may cut the Keystone off my wall cabling and terminate it again with rj45 as I know it worked like that but that's not a great experience. :(

I need to replace my Linksys EA8300

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:51 PM PST

We recently moved to a new apartment, I used to have a Linksys EA8300 as main router, having an extender for my PS4(wifi card sucks) and my tv wires through the extender Linksys RE6500, but at my new apartment the signal is really weak. My speeds are 200mbps/10mbps, but here it barely surpasses 25/2 at my bedroom. The router is around 19ft away, I tried the same configuration as my old apartment but the speed coming from the extender is as low as the wifi signal coming from the main router. The full speed is on the other side of the apartment (234/12), I was thinking about getting a mesh wifi system.

Found that Linksys has the velop system at reasonable price at Best Buy

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/linksys-velop-ac2200-tri-band-mesh-wi-fi-5-system-3-pack-black/6209705.p?skuId=6209705

And Amazon has a netgear on cyber Monday special

NETGEAR Nighthawk Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 System (MK62) - AX1800 router with 1 satellite extender, coverage up to 3,000 sq. ft. and 25+ devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0823JXXX4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_h2fXFbKG3B7J9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I'm not familiar with mesh systems. I know that the netgear has wifi 6( we currently own some devices with it) and the Linksys is wifi 5 and triband.

Hope someone can help with any ideas

    Interfacing network to USB devices

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:51 PM PST

So I have a variety of machinery that is intended to run programs from USB flash drives. (Or floppy disks, but I can swap out those for USB drives).

I am making a home network to handle data access at various computers, and would like to also be able to remotely edit these flash drives.

Is there any product that can present itself as a USB flash drive to one host while being network attached storage for everything else? Possibly a regular external hard drive might be able to do it? I would like to have a dedicated drive at each machine, as it makes it easier to call up files at the machinery.

    Dual-band vs. Tri-band

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:47 PM PST

    Hi,

I am aware that the 3rd band in a tri-band is reserved for wireless backhaul, but what I am wondering how much bandwidth will be too much in a dual band setup.

    Background:

Installed a dual band wifi6 mesh network at my parent's place, she's got about a dozen web connected devices. Other than the IP streaming box, ipad and iphone, the others are low in internet demand. What I am thinking is, would it be better to downgrade to WIFI5 with tri-band technology. During the holidays the number of connected devices to the router exceeded 30 (phones, laptops, gaming consoles).

    1. What's the bandwidth of number of devices connected on a dual band setup before the performance takes a hit. Ballpark is good, 50-100?

    2. In terms of future proofing, I opted for WIFI6, even though none of her devices are capable, yet. ISP is at 400MB DL and 20MB UL. But went the dual band route, I understand that triband efficiencies are best at 1GB UL and DL, who's to say that the ISP won't offer that as a a standard package by 2025.

Thanks hope this was clear, happy to elaborate further if needed TIA.

    PS4 won't connect over ethernet?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:36 PM PST

Today I finally got a new router for the house and put the old one in bridge mode. Everything was going fine, my PC's ethernet still worked and the Wi-Fi worked fine.

I turn on my PS4 and notice it's offline. It can connect to the Wi-Fi but I'd still much rather ethernet. I use an ethernet switch for my PC and PS4, I've tried multiple different cables and they're all working, I tried changing the DNS to multiple different services, as well as a bunch of reboots of the router.

Does anyone have any idea why it won't connect?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:35 PM PST

I have a 200mbps plan with xfinity. Most of the time it's fine but it sometimes reads as low as 120mbps through xfi app. But on my ps4 or xbox my speeds are as low as 50mbps and sometimes I'm downloading at 2MBps which is pretty bad for what I pay for. Is this to be expected or should I get a more capable router/modem?
