When did replacing RAM and Hard-drive become a luxury?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:11 AM PDT

TLDR: which laptop brands and models are knowned for having easy to replace RAM and Hard-drive?

So, my laptop's warranty expired and I thought I my breed new life into my late 2014 aspire (i-5 4210u with a geforce 840m). I was going to try to upgrade RAM and HD (to ssd) and maybe the battery as well. I start seeing some tutorials and basically to access the RAM I would need to remove screws from the bottom, release top carefully and detach the screen and keyboard. Harder than what I assumed but ok... Then I could access the Hard-drive bay, I would then remove the wifi and fans to release the MOBO, turn it around to finally get to the RAM... It would be simpler to just cut the back of the laptop!!!

So time to see new laptops... Then I realise some lower end laptops have soldered RAMs and Drives.

Now this is a trend I really don't like. And I would like to make sure my next buy would offer me the opportunity to upgrade or repair issues.

There must be some brands that prioritize this...

    Need Advice for Buying Laptop

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:28 AM PDT

I am a fresh graduate from university and I want to purchase a laptop, I plan to use the laptop for day to day work but I plan to also learn the basics of design graphic and video editing, I got my eyes on these 2 laptops, do you guys think the specs are sufficient and which will you guys recommend?

    ASUS ZENBOOK UX433FA-8565U-16GB-512GB-WIN10 (INTEL I7-8565U/16GB/512GB SSD/INTEL/14" FHD/WIN10HOME), for about USD$920

    or

    Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14IIL05 - 2QID - Laptop - [Intel Core i7-1065G7 / 16GB Onboard / 1TB SSD M.2 / 14 Inch FHD / WIN 10 + OHS 2019], for about USD$1080

the prices are in my country's currency so there are slight differences but it doesn't really matter

for the Lenovo it's a 2 in 1 tablet and computer, so it flips backward, I have a concern that it might not last long due to this

Which of these 2 do you guys recommend taking consideration of the price, the Lenovo is clearly in the advantage, but do you guys think that the extra USD$160 is worth the better specs?

and I am also open for any other suggestions with similar budgets, thanks!

Laptop for pensionists, 15,6'-17', Germany, ~350-500€

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 04:11 AM PDT

Hi everyone! A family friend want to replace her laptop and asked me for help. She she mostly wants to replace the laptop because it is very old and she is concerned about security, but overall doesnt really have a need for high performance in any regard. When I was going through different offers I found some laptops that seemed like really solid deals to me like this one for example: Lenovo V145-15AST But some of the negative reviews are giving me doubts. Some people are complaining about scratches and dents, even though it is not listed as a used item. And others say that the performance is too low even for simple web browsing. Overall a used laptop would not be a problem though. I'll give some additional information in the questionnaire and would be very thankful for your advice!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~350€-500€- There is no set budget, it's more of an "as expensive as necessary, as cheap as possible" scenario.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

something on the larger end like 15,6' or 17'

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Nothing that is heavy on performance. It will only be used for web browsing, internet banking, mails, sorting pictures and files (external harddrive is already in use), etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Possibly solitaire? Really nothing more intense than that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Windows 10 included SSD, at least 256GB Office starter would be nice, but not necessary DVD-drive would be a plus, but not necessary

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Should really just be able to boot and start a browser without very long waiting times. Other than that it should be somewhat future proof, as she will most likely not buy a new laptop for a long time. Lastly it shouldn't cost extra for better a better keyboard or touchoad as it would most likely not really be noticed anyway.

Would be great do get some response on what you would suggest!

    EDIT: formatting

Looking for a laptop for my wife

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:59 AM PDT

Hello guys! I'm looking for a basic laptop as a present for my wife with the budget under 650€. I found these two,

    HP, i5–1035G1/8GB/SSD256GB/15,6FHD/Win10Home - 555€

    Lenovo, i5–1035G1/8GB/SSD256GB/15,6FHD/FreeDOS - 555€

but then also got by 360x Pavilion (2in1) in the same price range. She said (found out undercover lol) that she'd like to have one of those 2in1s as she likes the feature, but only if it'll work as smoothly as ordinary laptop.

    HP 360x 2in1, i3–10110U/8GB/SSD256GB/14FHD/W10H - 600€

However, I checked benchmark grades and this processor seems quite worse. That's why, I also found this option that's over budget but ready to pay if it's really worth it:

    HP 360x 2in1, i5-10210U/8/SSD256/UHD/W10 - 700€

Are those Pavilion 360x's models worth it? Are the specs much worse?

Alternately happy to hear any other options based on the form below! I understand the prices are very different, but I'm ready to provide them for any named models.

    Thank you very much!

    Form:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      650€, Europe
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
As I already mentioned 2-in-1 is preferred, but definitely not required.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Under 2 kilos.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14'' or 15,6'' with big screen-to-size ratio.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not really, just for basic use.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nope.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Not really.

Macbook Pro 16 or Dell XPS 17

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:50 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm an architecture student and I need a performance laptop with a nice design! I would mainly use it for my study which means 3D modeling, heavy 3D rendering, Photoshop, and a little bit of gaming when bored.

The MBP 16 and XPS 17 are the only laptops that come into consideration since the surface book 3 failed miserably.

On paper the XPS looks very promising, however the weak charger and the quality control is a pain in contrast to apple. On the other hand, apples hardware is already quite old with 9th gen intel and wifi 5. Another aspect to consider is, that in case of a macbook I would have to set up windows on it for gaming...

So as you see I'm conflicted to make a decision. Hope you guys can help me out.

if it's a really good deal then definitely

    Laptop for video editing/recording gameplay

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:22 AM PDT

I'm currently looking for a laptop that can be used for editing video and recording gameplay to be used in video editing. Some sort of middle ground between being able to record good looking gameplay footage of modern games and run software like adobe premiere pro would be ideal. I don't have a budget fully set at this moment but I'd like to spend less than $2000. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Acer Triton (2020) or Acer Helios (2019)??

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:18 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I've found two identically speced laptops with everything I want (i7-10750h, rtx 2070 max-q, 16gb ram), one is the Triton 300 2020 model and the other is the Helios 300 2019 model.

If it was the Helios 2020 model then I'd get that no questions asked but just curious if the newer Triton would be a better overall machine than the 2019 model?

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Non-chiclet/island keyboard laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 09:00 PM PDT

Are there any laptops that don't have chiclet/island keys? I'm a writer and very much hate the feel of those keyboards. My current laptop is just about dead and I'm so upset because I love the keyboard. I really only care about the keyboard and I guess the ability to use Windows 10 (even though I hate it). I'm playing with Ubuntu so if there are just OS-less laptops you know of (dunno if those even exist), those are welcome too.

    Looking for alternatives

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 02:30 AM PDT

I'm a student (I know, how original) and I have been looking for a suitable laptop under 1000€ (I'm french) for the past 2 months.

First choice was a Ideapad 5 14' with the following specs : R4700U, 16GB RAM, 100% sRGB screen.

But I'm strongly considering buying this instead : https://www.pcspecialist.fr/ordinateurs-portables/FusionIV-pro-15/

It features : Ryzen 4800H, 91Wh Battery, 100% SRGB screen, Only 1.5 kg.

At less than 800€ this is almost perfect. The lack of a dgpu is kind of a bummer.

I intend to do some light photo and video editing.

So far I haven't found many alternatives. Laptop prices suck in France, and I don't want a bulky and heavy laptop with gamery looks and 2 hour battery life.

The Zephyrus G14 Looks great. But it's like 1200 euros for the base model here. I've searched this sub extensively, but most of the recommendation I've seen simply aren't great when you are buying in France, with prices being 300-400€ more back here.

Is the Razer Blade 15 (2060, Intel Core i7-10750H) my only option for a bright screen, portability, and gaming?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:31 AM PDT

I saw that the laptop is on Amazon's deal of the day and the reviews are great. at 350 Nits, i think this is the brightest laptop screen so far, and with 100% RGB and 75% Adobe RGB (I could be wrong on this, but it was something in the 70's). I like how slim, and portable it is.

I was Looking at the Dell xps 15 but it's a bit expensive in the config i want (16gb ram, 512gb ssd). I also saw the asus zenbook 15 for 1100 on amazon which looked quite good, I've had an asus zenbook for the last 5 year's and its been great. I also saw the asus zephryus g14 which looked amazing for the price but it's not available on Amazon yet from asus in the mid tier config, only the ryzen 9 is available afaik. I only want to buy a laptop from Amazon from the actual manufacturer, not a third party for warranty and support reasons. High Build Quality/Quiet Dedicated Graphics - <1600 US

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:33 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Like to spend less than $1600, US

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality and fan noise are important to me. This is upgrading from an older Razer Blade, and that thing sounded like a jet engine. I have a Razer Blade Stealth 2020 I'll be returning due to blue screen issues... That pretty much met what I'm looking for though. Prefer aluminum cases to plastic. Nothing 'gamery'...

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat important. I'm willing to sacrifice on these for quieter fans.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 or less

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Need to be able to run WSL2 so need the virtualization features in processor/GPU. I like gaming as well but definitely open to options that might involve using an eGPU as long as I can still play games at lower settings while travelling. Would really like SOME dedicated card though, not Iris..

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Quiet fans, high build quality.

league of legends at best Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

touch, glare display (way better colours than non glare)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. i was using an hp spectre x360 until recently, gave it to my wife so she could use it for work. went back to my hp pavilion 15", but it´s to heavy for work/uni and it doesn´t have touch.

i found 2 notebooks so far, recommend one or suggest another option 1: https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/studentenprogramm/notebooks/hp/envy/hp+envy+x360+13+ay0175ng+660051 2: https://geizhals.de/lenovo-ideapad-flex-5-14are05-graphite-grey-81x2004yge-a2284101.html
