This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Funniest Shit I read today

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 09:55 PM PDT

I'm hunting for good deals on GPUs to build my new system and everything is so fucking expensive that I am super frustrated and reading something like this makes me LOL.

    link

ps. the GPU is - Zotac 2060 twin - https://www.amazon.in/GeForce-192-bit-Graphics-IceStorm-ZT-T20600F-10M/dp/B07MBKKQPW

    Another dumb GPU question

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 07:02 AM PDT

So where i live, a 3070 is around $710, and i can get a new 2070 super for $520. I currently don't have a functioning system, and it is quite frustrating (i use it for school and work aswell). The only demanding game i'm looking at for the next few months is Cyberpunk, but i don't need to max out rtx etc. I do have a 144hz 1440p monitor, and i realize that the 3070 is much better, but waiting potentially two months is an issue for me. I tried ordering the 3080, and it's set for delivery in november (if that is actually true).

If i can run Cyberpunk at high settings 1440p without rtx i'd be fine. I'd like to wait for the others, but i can't really figure out if the wait is really worth it. Especially considering the annoyances of doing all productivity on my laptop, which is non-optimal.

Someone just make a decision for me please.

A screw broke off into my motherboard, preventing me from securing my m.2 ssd drive. Is there any other way to secure the ssd?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:44 AM PDT

I recently embarrassingly got a screw snapped off into my motherboard while trying to install an m.2 ssd drive. Now that the screw is stuck in the motherboard I can't screw down the ssd onto the motherboard. Is there anyway I would be able to secure the ssd cause I really don't want my only other alternative to be "replace the motherboard". Any suggestions?

First build / Covid project complete! Meet Voorhees (3080 frame slasher)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:48 AM PDT

Firstly, thank you so much to this awesome & supportive community! This is my very first build. I've been wanting a gaming PC for years and finally decided Covid was the right time to go for it. Got a little creative with some spray paint, vertical GPU orientation, and a 5" stat screen.

For the record, I did not use a bot or buy from a scalper for the 3080. Just got really lucky on Wed. the 23rd.

And of course, lots of RGB for extra frames!

APC vs. CyberPower UPS review war on Amazon?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:20 AM PDT

I need a UPS for my new build, and looking at Amazon's options it seems like there's pretty much these two brands to choose from. Nearly all the units they have are rated between 4-4.5 stars. However, the top reviews for the top sellers seem to mostly be 1 star reviews with horror stories about "burning smoke" and "failed during first power outage". https://imgur.com/a/6zC0NRQ

Looking elsewhere, searches haven't revealed any other similar complaints from review sites and relevant forums. Comparisons like this one would surely mention potential issues with "smoke" and out-of-the-box unit failures if they were that common, wouldn't they? https://vsearch.com/apc-vs-cyberpower/

I'm definitely getting the feeling this is an Amazon review war going on between the two companies, where they buy each other's units to insure the "verified purchase" tag, then proceed to make stuff up about the units failing in every way possible.

Obviously this kind of thing isn't uncommon on Amazon, but I don't remember seeing anything as extreme as this, with a category dominated by two apparently warring companies upping the ante on the severity of their claims. I just don't see how these two companies could stay in business if their units were that prone to complete failure, let alone dominate the market.

Can anyone confirm that any of these horror stories have turned out to be real concerns? Or conversely that this is a known/strongly suspected review battle between APC and CyberPower?

Built a PC and now my whole family thinks I know everything about computers.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:46 PM PDT

Basically the title, I decided to build a gaming pc during quarantine with my dad and after a month or so of research I built it and everything works properly. However, my entire family now is under the impression that I know all about how computers work. This is not the truth AT ALL. I know where to find things in Windows settings and I know the basic function of the parts of my pc, but I still have no clue what MHz are, what motherboard specs mean, among many other things. I had to call a professional to reinstall windows for me when I got a corrupted system update. I'm by no means a computer whiz. Anyone else experienced this?

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/39Hpjp

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor $209.09
Motherboard MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard $109.99
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory $62.88

Not a big gamer here and have a budget around $1000 (above list slightly exceeds and I'm looking forward to the Prime day). Regarding the video card, I'm considering RTX 2070s or RX 5700-XT or waiting for 3070. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Almost finished, only waiting for my RTX 3080

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:21 PM PDT

Nearly finished my build, I'm just awaiting my RTX 3080 shipment.
Once the new Zen 3 will be released I'm gonna grab one and replace it,
but for now my sweet 2700x will do it's job.

    Components:

    • Motherboard: X570 Tomahawk Wifi
    • CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x // Currently running with PBO on at -0.75mv.
    • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Neo RGB 3600Mhz CL16-19-19-39 (Samsung D-Die)
// Had to adjust the Timings and Clock speed manually, the Ryzen 7 2700x can't reliably handle 3600Mhz kits. Officially supported speeds are 2933, most of the time 3200Mhz run stable. I'm currently running them at 3333Mhz 1:1 ratio CL15-16-16-16-32 with massively tweaked subtimings 100% stable.
    • GPU: Currently still running my good ol' GTX 980 TI with an Accelero Extreme IV custom cooler.
    • Cooling: NZXT Kraken x63 with 3 Arctic F12 120mm coolers within the case.
    • Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic black
    • RGB: Coolermaster Universal RGB Strip
    • Soundcard: Soundblaster Z Creative
    • Storage: EX950 1TB NVMe SSD, 256GB Samsung 2,5" SSD, 1TB old HDD drive from back in the days
    • Power supply: 750W BeQuiet! Straight Power 11
    • Thermal paste: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut

Link to build (sorry for reflections on glass and not the highest of quality):
    https://imgur.com/a/a1iIW7Q

    Temperatures:

    • CPU: Idle between 34°C - 44°C
      100% Blender/Prime95 load: 71°C after 20~ minutes.
    • GPU: Idle around 32°C
      100% Furmark usage: 64°C after 15~ minutes.

Pretty excited for the last and really most important parts to fulfill my dream PC for now.
I do enjoy this and other subreddits alot.
Feedback always is nice, the world seems a better place here on reddit.
    Wish you the best <3

First Custom Watercooled Loop PC Help

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:11 PM PDT

Okay, so I have built a few PCs in the past (and y'all have helped immensely), but it has been 4 years since my old build (i7-5820k + 980) and I am looking to make a new build. I have wanted to do a custom loop for a long time and finally decided to. With too many choices of components, I found a picture I want to base my build off of. I also decided to add in some white accents like the Case, RAM, and PSU.

Here is my list so far, without the watercooling stuff (tubes/fittings/rads/pump/res):

A few questions I have that maybe you guys could help me with:

    1. Judging by the picture I am basing my build off, it looks like the tube between the bottom 360mm rad and the GPU is far back there and a tight fit. I have no experience with custom loop watercooling and I was wondering if getting that tube in there will be really hard and how to do it.

    2. I want the exact coolant color shown in the picture, does anyone have an idea what coolant this is so I don't get the wrong color?

    3. The motherboard seems to be out of stock or very expensive, are there any similar motherboards you guys can recommend? RGB lighting and integrated MOSFET cooling solution like the CrossChill EK II preferred.

    4. I would rather get the M.2 SSD with the heatsink than without, but I don't know if it will be too thick. Without heatsink is 2.38mm and with heatsink is 8.1mm. Looking at the Maximus X Formula ROG, the M.2 SSD goes under the motherboard shroud and I cannot find any dimensions given on Asus' page for the mobo. Any ideas on how to figure this out?

    5. To fit in the case, it looks like I will have to use 2x 360mm thin radiators and I wanted to use the EK SE and PE line of rads, but it looks like they are completely out of stock. Do you guys have any recommendations where to get good thin rads that are in stock? In addition to that, what are some good brands for tubes, fittings, and pump/res? Should I just go with EK? Should I ask r/watercooling?

    6. Obviously the 3080 is impossible to find right now. I know it is pretty much impossible to predict restocks and such but how would I actually go about obtaining a 3080 at this time or how long would I realistically have to wait to get one?

    7. The fan setup looks to be 3x intake on the bottom of the case and 3x exhaust on top, both on a 360mm rad. Is this the best setup possible for cooling or do I want positive/negative pressure? Should I add a 120mm fan on the back of the case and, if so, would it be useful to put a 120mm rad under it and add it to the watercooling loop? (I doubt a rad would fit with the current mobo shroud, but a fan might)

    8. From a purely aesthetics standpoint, do you think it is dumb to add the white accents with the RAM, PSU, and case? I don't know if it would overall go well with the light blue coolant. Any opinions appreciated.

Sorry for all the questions but you guys have been a great help to me before and any advice/recommendations would be appreciated :))

    Are pc prices up?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 07:45 AM PDT

Can someone explain me what is going on. I wanted to build a pc but pc prices seems to be up. I'm referring to the European market I saw component like an rx580 go to € 182 I know this isn't the American market but this seems high. What is the best course of action for someone who wants to build a pc. What components are the most affected by the situation we have ourselves in?

Getting only 2 out of 4TB on HHD?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:23 PM PDT

As the title suggests, I built a PC back in May and bought a 4TB HHD but just realized I've only got 2TB available. I did some digging and saw one of the only ways for me to reformat would be to convert to GPT, but in order to do that I would need to wipe my hard drive? I've got almost a TB of data on there and don't really want to delete it to access the rest of my hard drive.. Would it be better to just get like an extra TB or two and transfer it over and then wipe it, or is there another way around it without having to spend the extra money or delete everything?

Hopefully someone can help me out, and sorry if this is the wrong place for it I just figured it would be a good place to start.

Pc keeps freezing with new build.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:51 PM PDT

I recently got a new PC case as well as a new CPU and power supply and all of a sudden my PC keeps freezing and become unresponsive while I'm running something like Google or Discord. Everything in the background seems to still be working like razor synapse because my keyboard keeps lighting up as well as my mouse. I have not had it freeze during a game which is confusing to me as a game is more demanding than Google chrome. I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 1500X to a Ryzen 5 3600X. According to MSI dragon center my CPU doesn't get above 60° C but it still freezes. I don't know what the issue was here and any help would be very much appreciated.

I plan to build my first PC and will visit Micro Center. Should I expect a top notch service or pushy sales tactics?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:51 PM PDT

Micro Center is a 1.5 hour drive from me. I plan to go there twice. First to get an idea of what I want and take everything in, and the next time to get everything I want.

Seeing as it's a 3 hour round trip, can I go there expecting a lot of help or am I going to run into high pressures sales and I should read up as much as I can before driving there to understand exactly what I want?

What's going on with the lian li lancool 2 price?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:42 AM PDT

The lancool 2 is pretty famous having been reviewed as the best performance/price case since they released their mesh version. However, in the past few days, I've noticed the newegg and amazon price for this case has skyrocketed to 170-200 dollars compared to the price at my local microcenter which is 100. Is this specific case really being price-fixed?

Can I use this cpu with my mainboard?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:51 PM PDT

I want to upgrade my old Prozessor (i5 7400) with an newer one (i7 8700k). I think that I have a very outdated mainboard (msi h110m eco) but with the right socket for the new CPU. It's also compatible with i3/i5/i7 but only 6. generation - according to their website. Is it possible to use this combination? Or do I need an better mainboard?

My new GPU led to my WiFi and sound not working

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:51 PM PDT

So, to make a long story short...

-I got new Radeon RX 580

    -Installed it

    -Try to install the drivers

-Drivers don't seem to install properly

-Restart PC and WiFi and sound has gone.

Legit the WiFi doesn't work at all anymore. The bottom right corner only has a sound logo with a red circle and X next to it. In settings the WiFi section just has a flat line next to it.

Please send any help, anything is appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Will I have any issue putting a motherboard from a Dell Optiplex 790 onto a 3rd party case?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 04:47 PM PDT

So I'm planning on sending a bunch of old PCs to recycle center because I need to make space in the storage room and server room. Some of those include Dell Optiplex 790 desktop towers and small form factors. A lot of them have busted PSUs, so I'm mainly reusing the motherboard from one of the SFF and i5-2400 CPU, and transplanting it onto a spare mid-tower case I have at home.

Will I have any issue with the motherboard's compatibility with an ATX case, or just issues in general?
