    Cheap durable(babyproof) laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:56 PM PDT

My kid recently took a chip out of my partners MacBook so we are looking for a durable replacement. It needs to run Adobe Acrobat, word, and some light gaming ( my partner specifically requested EverQuest). They're used to using Macs so something that is easy to set up and reliable would be great. The last non Mac they had was a terrible Dell that broke 3 proprietary chargers and bricked itself within a year.

TV Supports Dolby Vision, Laptop Supports HDR10

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:47 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm having issues getting my tv and laptop to work together to play and stream in HDR. Any help is very much appreciated

    Background

I recently purchased a lot of new tech, including a new laptop from the HP Omen 15-dh1 line. This specific model comes with the NVIDIA RTX2060 Mobile GPU chip. It runs Windows 10 and has the i7-10750H processor, if that turns out to be relevant.

I also recently purchased the TCL 6-Series 2020 4K monitor (model number 55R635).

My hope is to be able to play games in 4K HDR (ignore any fps capability issues for this question). To do this, I bought an HDMI 2.0 cable from Amazon

    Issue

I'm getting the 4K resolution to display correctly, but I can't seem to enable HDR. I believe the issue may be that the TCL only supports Dolby Vision, whereas my laptop supports only HDR10 for Windows. Is there a way to enable Dolby Vision on my laptop, or vice versa? Or some similiar way around this problem?

    Solution Attempt

I ran the dxdiag, and confirmed that my laptop was recognizing and correctly assigning my tv model. I then confirmed it is listed as 'not supported' under monitor capabilities, HDR support, and advanced color.

I confirmed that my gpu is able to support HDR. I know my tv can, because I've watched HDR through Netflix on my 4K FireStick in another hmdi port.

I have the most recent drivers for Nvidia, windows, and the TCL/Roku tv.

I saw an app in the Microsoft store that supposedly enables Dolby Vision on windows 10, but it's sketchy looking software and several people reported that it crashed apps on their PC (it has a 2 star rating). It's called Dolby Vision Extensions published my Dolby Laboratories. I'm hesitant to try it.

    Other Things

One thing I noticed is that in my dxdiag log, 'Output Type' is listed only as HDMI, but I don't know if it would specify HDMI2.0 if it was capable.

Also, the "native mode" listed is 4k 30Hz, but I changed the display to 60Hz, however I don't see how that would change anything if my cable has enough bandwidth.

Can you change graphics card in Dell G7?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:19 PM PDT

I have a 2060 super on my Dell G7 17 inch, and I saw the new Nvidia graphics card that were just announced so I was wondering if I can swap it with the new one? Like can I go to Best Buy or someone and they can swap it or is it just not possible?

    Chipset replacement

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:18 PM PDT

How does changing chipset of cpu of a laptop affect the stability of it? Does it decrease the performance? My msi laptop's chipset is broken and I gave it to a repair tech. He can replace the chipset by doing BGA rework. So should I do it?

    Looking for something around $1000-$1200

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:17 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop for around $1000-$12000. I'm really looking for something beefed up in the cpu area, doesn't need to have dedicated graphics or anything as I've already got a sufficient desktop for gaming and such.

I've been looking at lenovo's thinkpads, particularly the E15 with the Ryzen 7 4700U, but considering the ryzen platform's dependency on RAM speed, and the sort of low 2666mHz clock speed of the RAM on board, I'm not super sure now. Although I could shoot for the same laptop with an Intel chip. Would this be a good buy? I need a laptop that would last me about 4-5 years, I was looking at thinkpads because of their durability and reliability.

If not, what else should I go for? I'm open to suggestions, my main priority is something that can stay running smoothly for 5 or so years, and has a decently color-accurate screen. Thank you!

How to safely connect a notebook and a laser printer to electricity in Europe?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 08:10 AM PDT

I would like to safely connect the following devices to the electricity:

    Device Device power
    Dell WD19 130W docking station max 130 W; AC adapter: 100- 240V, max 2.5A
    Dell Latitude 5580 15.6" notebook max 65 W
two iiyama ProLite B2482HS-B5 24" LCD monitors average 18 W each; AC adapter: 100-240V, max 1 A each
    Brother HL-L2352DW laser printer average when printing 460 W, max 1104 W

The notebook draws power from the docking station via a USB-C cable.

I live in an apartment in a Polish city, so the voltage in power sockets is 230 V, and power sockets have E (French) type.

I have read that due to possible surges and brownouts) it is best to connect the computer to a power socket via a UPS [1]. Which UPS should I buy? I have read that it should be of online type [2]. Are cheaper line-interactive UPSes also suitable? Could someone recommend a specific UPS model?

How to connect the printer to the power: via a UPS, through an additional surge protector, or directly to a wall socket? I am asking because some UPSes have too low power to connect a laser printer to them.

When it comes to working time on UPS battery, it can be minimal, e.g. 10 seconds, because the laptop battery is enough for me.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1000 PLN or about €250, Poland

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I prefer the UPS to be not too large if there is no difference in the safety.

? Flaws I might be overlooking because I'm distracted by the new, Spectre x360 13 and Dell XPS 13?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:07 PM PDT

I've learned I'm bad at picking laptops because I am wrong about what will matter to me. This means that recommendations from friends and the internet break down because I am wrong about what I ask for!

    • Current laptop, Yoga 910. Incorrectly believed I would get used to the half width shift key. Incorrectly believed chin cam would be acceptable.
    • Previous, Yoga 13. Incorrectly believed I would be ok with a sub-1080 screen; didn't research wifi.
    • Older, Dell Studio model with extended battery. Incorrectly believed I would not care about the weight.

I'm planning to buy an HP Spectre x360 13, or possibly a Dell XPS 13, and probably a 4k display (I'm leaning toward the HP). Are there any day to day problems I might be overlooking because I'm distracted by the shiny and new? I understand HP used to have crappy trackpads but this has been fixed? Anything (like the half width shift key, or poor wifi) that might become a daily annoyance?

Looking for Laptop that is lightweight for gaming (no budget)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I'm looking to play most games like MHW and FFXIV on high settings, budget isn't really an issue but something around 1400 would be ok. I bought an EVGA SC15 2 years ago and it serves me well, but the mousepad is broken lol. Any help is appreciated.

Starting Uni, would like a laptop but not sure where to start!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:45 PM PDT

    Hi all,

So I'm starting uni soon and need to get a laptop as with Covid etc it will be handy to have a workstation I can bring around with me. I have a high spec gaming pc I use for gaming however if my laptops able to do xcloud that would be good. Besides that main uses would be stuff like Microsoft office. I was looking into the surface pro 7 due to the touch screen which would be good for notes and art however I'm unsure if that's a good pic or not.

Gaming on mid-range laptop and heat

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 09:42 AM PDT

I bought a mid-range HP 15 laptop and I've been concerned about potentially overheating it or damaging it if I gamed on it. The game itself is not actually beyond the specs of the computer since it's a fairly old game (Crusader Kings II) and I have more than is needed to play it (8GB ram vs 4GB requirement, 1GB memory for GPU vs 512mb requirement).

I've checked the temperatures of the CPU cores using HWinfo and it stays at about 65 degrees, so it's not like I'm hitting any critical temps. The only thing is that the bottom of the laptop gets pretty warm. It's not too hot to the touch, though. My main concern is if that heat might damage the laptop in the long run since technically this isn't a gaming computer.

To note: I have it on a flat surface and I don't use it on my lap or put it on cloth.

    Thanks for the help!

I spilled water on my chromebook and now it keeps ringing

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:55 PM PDT

So so had my school chromebook in my bag and it got drenched by my water bottle. Now it won't turn on (I think it may have shorted out) and the charging light won't go on. But the thing I'm most concerned about is that there is a high pitched ringing noise coming from the motherboard sort of area. Does anyone know why that may be?
