    Indestructible laptop

    Indestructible laptop

    Indestructible laptop

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 05:16 PM PDT

    Hi,

My special needs brother is getting a laptop for his 12th birthday and we don't know what to buy him! He has autism and a tendency to be rather violent with electronics. Our budget is $1000.

He enjoys playing retro video games and watching youtube videos so the specs don't have to be insane or anything. I'd rather compromise for battery life over specs.

My first thoughts were a thinkpad with a protective case of some kind.

    Give me your ideas!

Simple 2-in-1 for that doesn't overheat

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:14 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

<$500USD, I'm low-income so the cheaper the better.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I definitely want a 2-in-1, not really for Windows tablet mode, but just cuz I like having the different viewing options. I love using stand mode the most for watching things.

Decent battery would be good too, but I'm mostly going to use it at home anyway. I just don't wanna be tethered to a charger too often.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Don't care that much.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13-14", not too big or too small.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly going to use it for just browsing, chatting, and watching shows/Netflix, possibly some doodling in paint tool SAI. very basic tasks like that.

I do not consider myself a pc gamer at all! But there is one game I like to play, listed below.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/290340/Armello/

This is probably the most demanding thing I'll ever run on it, and it shouldn't require very much. It's just an indie boardgame thing. I don't even care about running it on max settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • A backlit keyboard and touch screen. I have low vision and these help me a lot.
    • 6-8gb ram should be suitable for me I think?
    • At least 2 usb ports and an hdmi port (I might sometimes wanna hook it to a monitor+keyboard).
    • It doesn't need to come with an SSD as long as I can add my own later. (I already have an M.2 I could add if its supported)
    • DOESN'T GET TOO HOT OR HAVE A LOUD FAN, I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. I've been disappointed by 2 different laptops with this problem now.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I posted here a few months ago and every one recommended me the Lenovo Flex 5 14 at the time, which I ended up getting. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B086226DDB?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

I have not been very happy with it given that it has a very noisy fan and gets VERY warm even though I only do very basic things. The single aforementioned game I actually play makes it super loud+hot (even at lowest settings). You can read my post history for more info. I have found no solution for these issues.

At 16gb of ram and the Ryzen5 cpu, I was worried this thing was more than what I needed, yet it seems to not even handle these basic tasks well. I'm highly considering sending it back and looking at other laptops.

The last laptop I was happy with was an ASUS Q302LA from 2015, so maybe something like that but a little newer.

    Looking for a 2 in 1 Laptop under 1000€

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:54 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
under 1000€, I prefer to spend as little as possible, Country: Germany
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes!
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I need a 2-in-1 laptop for university (computer science). Performance is not that important. I would prefer an AMD CPU as they don't get as hot as intel and are cheaper.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I am currently using a ThinkPad T430, so I'm used to lugging a heavy laptop around.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video editing, maybe a little gaming. Mostly older games for LAN partys etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I have no problem with lowering the settings as long as I get decent FPS. I played Euro Truck Simulator 2 on my T430 and it ran, but I'd like a bit more graphical fidelity if I can get it.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I don't want or need a discrete GPU. It would be great if it had a fingerprint reader and a trackpoint. It would also be nice if it comes with a pen that you can store inside the laptop like the ThinkPads.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
You could say I'm a ThinkPad fanboy, I just like the look and feel and the build quality. My preferred way to control the laptop is the trackpoint. I already took a look at the Lenovo L13 Yoga my friend has and it ticks almost all my boxes aside from having an Intel CPU. I really want to avoid Intel. But as I see it there aren't that many 2-in-1 laptops with AMD CPUs. So I am basically almost certain my next laptop will be a ThinkPad but maybe you guys can point me in the direction of some other models that I haven't considered yet. Thanks!

Is 1 GB VRAM difference (from 3 GB to 4 GB) worth 8 GB RAM difference (from 16 GB to 8 GB)?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:27 AM PDT

I´m getting a new low-mid range gaming laptop and I´m stuck between 2 models, that have the EXACT same specs, only one has 4 GB VRAM with 8 GB RAM and the other one has 3 GB VRAM and 16 GB RAM. Which one would you go for? I could eventually get a 16 GB RAM for the first laptop, but that´s more money spent and I wonder if that 1 GB VRAM makes much difference. Help plis :>.

    Acer or Lenovo (budget range)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:52 AM PDT

hi im not sure which one of these three to take:

    Lenovo ThinkPad E14 - 14" IPS, 1920x1080, i5-10210U (1.6- 4.2GHz, 6MB) RAM: 8GB DDR4, SSD: 256GB, VGA: Intel UHD Graphics

    Acer Swift 3 SF314-55-55T1 - 14" IPS, 1920x1080, i5-8265U (1.6 - 3.9GHz 6MB), RAM 8GB DDR4, SSD 256GB, Intel UHD Graphics 620 (300 - 1100 MHz)

    Acer Aspire 3 A315-55G 15,6 FHD, Intel Core i5 10210U, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD PCIe, NVIDIA GeForce MX230 2GB

Need it for college, programming and light photo & video editing. Mostly afraid that Acer's quality is shady. The thinkpad is ok but no dGPU. Thx

    Laptop Recommendations

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:47 AM PDT

    * Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase:

    any

    * Are you open to refurbs/used?

    no

    * How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?

lightweight, preferably decent to good battery life, good srgb screen

    * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I prefer 13" but open to suggestions max 15" its lightweight

    * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light CAD, video editing on the go (bc i have pc at home), light gaming, photoshop, some illustrator works

    * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

for laptop (i play Stellaris and some indie games) and i am used to high refresh rate (60hz would do if it has a super good screen)

    * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

lightweight, if possible has full-sized/MicroSD card,(it's ok if don't have) but definitely USB c charging

    * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I sometimes leave a lot of chrome tabs open. I only favor USB C & USB A. having MicroSD/ fulls-sized sd card is a bonus since I'm a photographer & videographer

TLDR: I'm looking for a laptop specifically for CAD, photoshop as well as premiere pro (for on the go editing). I'm studying Design and Media. I own a pc at home thus I'll be doing most of the powerhouse work there however, some works are to be done outside and at the campus. I've been looking for a laptop with USB C charging and had eyes on the XPS 13 (however I heard about its thermal issues) and razer blade stealth (no full-sized/micro SD card slot though) as they both have a good SRGB. I'm only familiar with windows laptops. its been quite difficult for me to find a laptop with a good screen, USB c charging, and has a graphic card for quick sync. I dislike carrying heavy gaming laptops (they have bad battery life, heavy and rarely USB C charging). Any recommendations I'll definitely look into it!!

Looking for the perfect undercover gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:02 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: No limit! I first want to know if it exists in France.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes! There may have some older references that match my criteria, but I do not know them. If you know, tell me! I am desperate enough to pay for an older computer.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Ultrabook/quite light gaming notebook. No plastic.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It is important: I am looking for a laptop under 2.3 kg and below 2.3 cm thick.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15,6" or below
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. casually AAA Gaming, and programming. I will install a Linux/Windows dual boot. I want to be able to open it and to change RAM/storage.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Casually AAA games + I would like to be able to play at least Warzone and GTA. At least 60 fps at high, but 100 would be great.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Given the games, I am looking for a GTX 1660Ti or any RTX graphic card, with a 100+ Hz screen (no matter what technology and colorimetry, I assume everything is seeable nowadays).NO touch-screen. Maximum 1080p screen. Finger-print would be good but not mandatory.I want an ISO keyboard (a true AZERTY French, unlike on HP and MSI...)! For the keyboard, I prefer the per-key RGB backlight. But I am also open to 1 zone RGB, or neutral (white) 1 zone. No multi-zone RGB, I don't know what to do with it.And please, a webcam, no nose-webcam...Last but not least, I don't want a PC that screams "gamer" each time I open it.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It has been months since I am looking for the perfect laptop. What I found:
      • Intel/TongFang QC7 (in France: XMG Fusion 15 or Millenium ML3). The only computer I found that check my criteria, on paper. There are some preferences according to user for the keyboard and the material (which is great tho).
      • TongFang GK5 (XMG Core 15 or PCSpecialist Optimus IX Pro). The nose webcam... And the late delivery date and some problems with the PCSpecialist version.
      • Clevo PC50. A good pretender too. But I don't like the 15-colors backlighted keyboard (this feature is more gadget than beautiful). I have seen a per-key RGB version but only in Norway. Also, it is very recent, I am waiting for more reviews of it.
      • MSI GS66 Stealth. Very beautiful but also expensive. I have no budget limit, a bit flexible but if more than 2000€ I prefer to be fully satisfied. I would have taken it if it has an ISO layout/another font for the keyboard.
      • Razer Blade Stealth. 2000 € to play games at 720p? No.
      • Razer Blade 15. It is almost perfect, but WTF happened with the keyboard backlight. Why do I need to choose between per-key RGB and properly backlighted keycaps at this price? Also, the new version is so hot that this laptop became a public health issue.
      • Lenovo Legion. The design is nice for a gaming laptop. But the big butt is ugly, sound too much gaming for me.
      • HP Omen (2020). I thank HP to give us the design that gamers deserve. Apart from the ISO layout and the weight, which is forgivable for this price and this design I like, the only thing I do not like is the keyboard backlight which sounds too much gamer for me again. For now, I have the choice between 4 zones RGB, or "red dragon" (actually I only find this one), both with "zqsd" (or WASD in QWERTY) zone (to everyone who designs keyboards: WHY DO YOU ALWAYS WANT TO EMPHASISE THESE KEYCAPS? WE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE, AND IT HELPS IN NOTHING TO MAKE THEM DIFFERENT.). I found a per-key RGB on Reddit with the 2070 version but can't find it in France.
      • Acer ConceptD 7. Another one that checks almost all the criteria, but no 100+ Hz screen. Is it good for gaming?
      • All the ASUS laptop. Either no proper graphic card or no webcam and proper keyboard all keys (where are the pg up, down, end, start on the G14?).

I also looked for other computers that cannot handle AAA games as I want and no 100 Hz screen:

    • Dell Inspiron 7591 (2019)Last year's version is much better than today's version... Anyway, I find both ugly...
    • Lenovo Yoga S740A serious pretender! It is the same specs as the last one. I would take it if anyone convinces me.

    So a laptop:

    • GTX 1660 Ti or RTX
    • neutral looking (no superflu angles, no RGB lights... just flat, eventually with vents pls)
    • webcam on top
    • per-key rgb (or RGB/white at a decent price) properly backlighted ISO keyboard
    • 100+Hz screen

I still haven't seen it (except the QC7 but if you have other suggestions..).

Girlfriend needs a laptop for university and light gaming

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:17 PM PDT

University started back up for the both of us and with perfect timing, her laptop died. So she asked for my help on finding her a new laptop. She's a biomedical engineering student and despite the pandemic, she still needs to go to campus to work on her labs. Since I have a PC, I'm lending her my laptop for now so that she can do the stuff she needs to do.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Her budget is $1000-$1200
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life is most important because her lab sessions last about 4 hours. She also works an internship at a hospital, so the battery life needs to be long enough when she does her rounds.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
As long as a small woman can carry it
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
She uses Labview, Solidworks, Comsol, Matlab, Word, Powerpoint and Excel.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Sims 4, Teamfight Tactics, Valorant, Civ 6
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard, color accurate screen, accurate touchpad, big storage, doesn't slow down when she has a lot of tabs open and a display that wont give her a headache when she works on something for a long time.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
She's not rushing to get a laptop, but she wants to get a curbside pickup so that I can get my laptop back. If a curbside pickup is not possible, she can order it online and wait for it to arrive.

Help me choose a workstation please

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 10:43 PM PDT

    Hey r/SuggestALaptop,

I have an old 2012 MacBook Pro I am looking to replace. I used this laptop my entire academic career and have really grown to love the feel of it, but it's time for an upgrade. I work as a CNC machinist and design engineer and use CAD/CAM and simulation software all the time (mostly MasterCAM and SolidWorks). This machine would be almost entirely work oriented with a little light gaming thrown in and I would like it to last as long as my MacBook has.

I am torn between two options:

    - Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 3 that I customized on Lenovo's website with the following specs:

    - Intel i7 10850H

    - 8 GB (1 x 8) DDR4 2933 MHz (will be upgraded in the future)

    - 256 GB m.2 PCIe SSD (will also be upgraded in the future)

    - NVIDIA Quadro T2000 4 GB (I am very unfamiliar with the Quadro line as I
have never built a workstation before, but I understand it is comparable to a 1650ti)

    - 15.6" UHD (3840 x 2160) LCD IPS

    - Total price comes to $3,579, but there is a Labor Day sale bringing it down to $2,255

    - Dell XPS 15

    - Intel i9 10885H

    - 32 GB (2 x 16) DDR4 2933 MHz

    - 256 GB m.2 PCIe SSD (will be upgraded in the future)

    -NVIDIA GeForce 1650ti 4 GB

    - 15.6" (1920 x 1200) FHD

    - Price comes to $2,055 after a $100 off promotion they seem to be running

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - ~$2,000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      - No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Performance is the most important with build quality next and battery life last
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - Not entirely important, but the lighter the better
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - MasterCAM, Inventor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Word, Excel, MATLAB, and simulation games like ANNO, Civ, SimCity, etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - Listed above, but mostly simulation and strategy games. It would only be light gaming, as I have a gaming PC at home.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - Definitely need a good feeling keyboard. My 2012 MBP that is getting replaced has the best keyboard I have felt of any laptop and it is a pleasure to type on it.

Why is the Lenovo laptop priced so much more than the Dell one even though they are fairly similarly specced? Do you recommend I go with one of my choices or something entirely different altogether? Why?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Need me a new durable laptop // Opinions on HP spectre and envy x360?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:20 AM PDT

Looking for a laptop mainly for school and too carry onto work after. I'm studying accounting so windows is preferred. Budget is $1-1.6k (AUD)

I think I've narrowed it down to HP spectre x360 13 i5/8gb/512ssd and HP envy x360 ryzen5/8gb/512ssd. Anyone have any opinions on these laptops? Most reviews online I find are all biased/short term. I've heard the envy ones can be quite loud and battery doesn't last as long as advertised.

Or any other suggestions would be appreciated :)) I'm hoping for a lighter smaller laptop with a good battery. Not super picky about the specs but obviously better value is good.

Looking for a laptop to pair with a gaming pC [UK]

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:19 AM PDT

*Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: * £600-900 UK

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, if they are open box or Grade A with warranty

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

This is to pair with my gaming PC. I will work on my PC mainly but when I am at uni I may use the laptop. I'd love something light, with a full metal build and great battery life.

I am open to trying a tablet like the Tab S7+ but unsure if it would be a wise purchase.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very, ideally as light as can be. Thin would be great too.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use FL Studio, I run a lot of VST plugins while making music which can be pretty CPU intensive. As for gaming, I am not really going to game on this machine, but if I could run emulators that would be great, mainly Cemu.

    I'll need a minimum of 8GB RAM and 512 SSD I think.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    1080p 60 if I were to game, but it isn't a must.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Great build, touchscreen, keyboard and fingerprint reader are musts. A touch screen would be perfect.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So I had a Huawei Matebook D 14 that got a sticky key, Amazon have offered me a refund of £600 so I have taken it knowing there are the Ryzen 4000 series CPUs out now and I should be able to get a better deal.

I do also know that Huawei are offering student discount right now, meaning I could get a Matebook 13, with a Ryzen 3500u, 512GB SSD and 8GB RAM for £580~ alongside a mouse and wireless buds.

Not beneficial but both my desktop pc (from 2015, Pretty low end there but with a newer GPU ((Gtx 760)) which broke around 6 months ago) and my Laptop which was an Acer Nitro 5 which broke completely around 7 months ago, i'm getting ensurance for that which is what i'm using to buy a new laptop, the reason the laptop broke was due to the fact that when i got it the side of the screen cracked up so you could see inside the screen, However i thought it wasn't a big deal but then half the screen became black and the other half a mix of green and other colours.

Looking for a Gaming laptop with a color accurate screen

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:00 AM PDT

Hello! I hope everyone is doing well. Over the past 5 years, I have been using an HP Notebook 15-ay011nr. It was a good cheap computer, but I started having major problems with it as time went on. (Keys began to stop working entirely, the hard drive went out, and it's become incredibly slow.) In fact, just going off the amazon reviews, I'm lucky this thing even still powers on. I'm looking at upgrading to an entry level gaming laptop. I've been eyeing a couple of the different Asus Tuf models, which look to be really good overall. I don't run anything overly demanding, I'm a hobbyist. I work with animation, models, I do indie game programming, and a variety of other things. The most demanding program that I run, is Minecraft. I was hoping to be able to get the game to run with a solid frame-rate. There were some review sites that claimed the Asus could run it with shaders and modpacks at around 60 fps (Granted, I'm not going to be running that often, I just want a bit of leeway.). What concerns me, is the screen. Supposedly, it has a slight delay to the monitor, which results in slight ghosting, and the color palettes are off. I suppose I could hook up the Acer monitor from my old desktop computer, however if I'm taking the computer with me at any point, then I would not be able to work on any of my main projects. My budget isn't making it any easier either, I'm trying to stick around $750 USD, which I understand is very hard to do.

-I'd like to be able to run minecraft at 100+ fps on decent settings
-It has to have a color accurate screen
    -Expandable ram

Once again, I know this is a very odd set of requirements, and a low budget to withhold them, but I appreciate your help!

    Need a lightweight laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:41 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Approx USD $1000-$1500, not a hard limit, will buy in the US

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Maybe manufacturer refurb

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Touch screen is a huge plus, battery life is somewhat important. Would like it to be fast and last me hopefully a long time

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I travel full time (well, before covid.. hope to keep traveling at some point) so it needs to be as lightweight as possible, ultra lightweight, thinness not as important as weight

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I play some games, if it can run league of legends on low settings without overheating that's all I need. Also, I fly a drone and don't know how to edit videos yet but plan to learn and will need to use the laptop for that too. I teach English online on a platform similar to skype, standard audio and video calls, and I use a webcam software called ManyCam

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      Answered above

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen is a huge plus, hopefully a good keyboard, I type fast and often, after 3 years of use my ASUS laptop has had the q, e and r keys popped off and unfixable

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      Thanks for any guidance!

laptop for programming and university work [canada] [Max $1200 CAD]

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:21 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Canada: $1200 CAD

Are you open to refurbs/used? Nope. I don't like go go refurbished/ used on electronics.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Most important are definitely build quality and somewhat decent performance (not gaming level). I don't care much about the battery life or other features. 2-in-1 would be nice but not that important.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very much. I prefer a portable laptop that's light.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not necessarily. But i guess something very much below 13 inches might be too small for me. No homo.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan to program on it and also do some video editing. It's mostly going to be used for development.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It's important that the keyboard quality is very good as I type a lot. Both for work and for university.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Honestly, I'm just looking for something portable, light, and well optimized (fast). I'll mostly be running various compilers on it for software development. No gaming at all.

Thank you for your time, you magnificent stranger.

HP Envy Vs Lenova Flex? 16 GB Ram?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:21 PM PDT

    What is the better laptop?

The Lenova Flex on Amazon for $700

    or

    HP Envy for $1000?

I know nothing about laptops. Simply going off ram assuming its important and these seems to be the best (and only) 2-in-1 laptops under $1000 with 16 gb ram. Although I just received my HP today, I noticed the Flex seems pretty similar for 1/3 less of price.

I know the Envy is metal and should be a superior build, but is the extra $300 worth it?

    Would love some feedback.

looking for a sturdy good performance school laptop [$600, USA]

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't like the 2-in1's, touchscreens, etc. I would like the laptop somewhat sturdy to carry to & from places consistently, and a good battery life would be nice too but not necessary. I would like performance above all, so at least an i5.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    I prefer lighter laptops.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14"≤15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just running programs, web browsing, nothing heavy. I am looking for at least 256GB of HDD.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard with nice feedback would be appreciated.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd prefer a lot of USB ports, and maybe even an ethernet port or disk reader but it's not necessary. Looking for laptops with good brightness, too. Thank you :)

2-in-1 Laptop for uni work, online browsing, casual gaming [13-14", $1500 AUD, AUS]

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:45 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Maximum $1500 AUD, Australia

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

All very important, but longevity is extra important so the build quality cannot be too poor and performance would hopefully allow the laptop to be used in the future. Looking for a 2-in-1 laptop

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Important. I would be using it for uni so I don't want to be carrying around a huge laptop

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-14 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No editing but I do some casual gaming. E.g. Civ VI, Sims 4, Cities Skylines

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As above. Moderate/low settings is fine, at 30fps. I've come from a 2014 Macbook Air so my expectations are low

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Definitely want reliable build, fingerprint sensor would be nice, and I want a good trackpad. Want to be able to write on it with a digital pen

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've heard good things about the Ryzen chips so I've had a look at those. However I have heard that they don't come with Thunderbolt 3 so I'm wondering how big of an impact that will be.

So far I've liked the look of the HP Envy x360 13 inch. I like the metal body and the small form factor. With my student discount I can get the Ryzen 5 4500U with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD for around $1200 which is good.

I've also seen the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14inch with Ryzen 5 4500U with 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD for $1000 which seems like a bargain, but I am hesitant about the plastic build and the bulk of the laptop.

Dell XPS 13 seems good but is out of my budget. Hoping you experts can help me with my decision. Thanks in advance!

Looking for a student laptop with potential for maybe small games and applications

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:41 PM PDT

My ancient macbook pro is getting super slow, so looking to buy a new laptop.

It might be alot to ask but im looking for something that will last me a while, good for general university work (multiple things open at once), ideally be able to play some small games such as age of empires, Tony hawk, rocket league, and some apps for music making. My budget is probably around Max. $1500AUD but willing to splurge if its worth the investment.

    Thanks :)
