Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:44 AM PDT Using Latex is great. It is a great tool for everyday school papers to professional research papers. The main issue I had with latex was the lack of some basic functionality. For example you have to run 4 commands for something as simple as building a latex file with bibliography in it. Also with the amount of .sty packages out there, figuring out which "apt" to install for building your latex is also a lot of unnecessary google-search. I have written a simple script that attempt to automate these things and a bunch of more. Kindly take a look at the source code here. More information about it's functionalities is available by calling build_latex -h (after installing the program). Also checkout my blog here, where I have written about the script. Any suggestions/feedback and bug reports is highly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Audio is not as loud as in windows 10, Pop!_OS, Screen tearing while playing videos (Intel HD 4000) Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:29 PM PDT When I installed Pop os onto my Thinkpad, the sound wasn't as loud (or as clear) as in windows 10. I'm fairly new to Pop and I want to switch over from windows 10 to but I can't because the speakers dont get loud enough. But they do get significantly louder in Windows 10, infact over 50% louder. The other issue I am having is how can I fix the screen tearing issue. In some youtube videos I notice a fair amount of screen tearing in quick moving segments. Is there a fix for both of these issues? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 02:25 PM PDT Been experiencing some issues with wifi and bluetooth for a bit now. And I have just now seen this: Reckon this may be the cause of the problems. I am unable however to choose to use the driver. Unsure about I should do... could I get some pointers? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
How can I manually install and run a game on lutris? Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:01 PM PDT I'm looking to play hyperscape from the uplay store. Even though it shows up as a result in lutris, there is currently no automated process to install it. How can I set it up and run in Lutris manually? I run pop os version 20.4 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:58 PM PDT I have a severe issue with KDE-Neon and I don't know what to do. It doesn't start anymore and I require my laptop for work. Any help is highly appreciated! Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:08 AM PDT I know both are different things, but I wanted to know if it makes any difference if I use KDE with GDM3 instead of SDDM. Can it affect the performance, because of the difference of auto-start processes, if any? Or GNOME with SDDM? Because I am thinking of using 2 DEs on Ubuntu 20.04. I am asking for if in case I happen to switch DEs due to some reason periodically. [link] [comments] |
Need help install Linux Mint 20.04 on an iMac 6.1 (late 2006) in BIOS/Legacy mode Posted: 01 Aug 2020 11:44 AM PDT Hello everyone, I'm seeking help with my quest to turn my 10€ 27" iMac in to a htpc. Yes, I got the thing for just 10€, otherwise I guess I would never bother even trying this. I will explain my journey so far and try to keep it short but include all the relevant steps I took. After figuring out that macs kinda generally use EFI, and this model uses 32-bit EFI in particular, I managed to boot a 64-bit Linux Mint 20.04 with via a USB-stick with 32-bit EFI. I even managed to install it and it did boot up and start, but not as reliably as I was hoping (sometimes the screen just stayed black). So as I tried to figure out how to continue, my plan was to install an run Kodi on this thing, as it would be a great thing watching yt-videos and movies from my nas. Turns out, the open-source driver for nvidia isn't all that great and the iMac gets stuck/crashes when I launch Kodi (screen goes black and stays black). Funny enough, that didn't happen when I tried that on the live-usb-system. So after finding out that, I figured that it would be wise to get the proprietary drivers, as they were said to have better performance overall. Then I found out, that they don't work with an EFI installed system the hard way... (didn't boot, what so ever). And now I am currently trying to convert my EFI boot partition to a legacy one, but unsuccessful so far. I have tried to convert the GPT to MBR and the tool used (link below) reported the conversion to be successful. But now I am kinda stuck on how to create a proper boot partition for legacy mode. I have already tried the method described in the first link below and the files seem to be in the correct place, but my /dev/sda1 partition (boot) seems to be a mess Here is a link to the exact model of iMac I have, in case someone thinks that is useful to know: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-24-inch-specs.html Ressources I used:
I would really appreciate any help in getting this done :-) And as a bonus, if there was any way to actually seed up the booting of linux on this thing, that would be amazing. Booting Linux takes for ever, compared to the OS X that was on there before. [link] [comments] |
How to address WiFi power draw? Posted: 01 Aug 2020 11:26 AM PDT He y'all, Is there any way to address the WiFi power drain that y'all know of? Doing research seems to indicate that linux in general doesn't do well with WiFi and batteries. [link] [comments] |
Pywal color scheme help with ranger Posted: 01 Aug 2020 11:01 AM PDT Hello, can anyone help? I've started using Linux and I started on Arch (yes, I know) and so far I think I'm getting stuff done. I'm having a problem on theming, though; I installed pywal to set color schemes for my terminal. It works, yes, when I reboot, it's still the same, but I have one issue: my ranger and vim doesn't follow. How do I get ranger and vim to follow the color scheme? It works at first, but when I do something in ranger (like open something) it reverts back to a default color scheme. https://github.com/dylanaraps/pywal/issues/107 Same as this guy. Thank you! Some things in Lubuntu 20.04 are not upgrading, apparently due to 'Hash Sum Mismatch' Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:25 AM PDT I installed Lubuntu 20.04 today (I did checksum on the iso image and it was absolutely fine) and when I started updating and upgrading stuff, I found many things weren't upgrading. Initially it showed that I had a problem with the internet, but my internet was fine. After that, I ran sudo apt-get update, sudo apt update, sudo apt-get upgrade and sudo apt upgrade (I learned these commands from the internet and I don't really know much about them other than that they upgrade and update things). Until sudo apt-get upgrade, everything was fine but when I ran sudo apt upgrade, more than 400MB of upgrades were not happening. At the bottom was an error message which suggested I run sudo apt upgrade --fix-missing. This helped a lot and most things were upgraded. But still, some stuff aren't upgrading at all. I ran the command several times and rebooted my laptop but still nothing. Here is what it says: Is there anything I can do about this? Note: I have reinstalled by redownloading the iso. Still shows the same thing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:29 AM PDT I'am a newbie in Linux and use ubuntu. I open my terminal with ctrl+alt+t. I've installed urxvt and customized it. But I want to launch it using ctrl+alt+t instead of a standard one. I've tried to google but it seems that I can't choose a correct phrase and search results are irrelevant to my topic. So I need help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:11 AM PDT Hi all.
I have changed the lock screen background and user image in LightDM GTK+ Greeter settings, but on the lock screen all I get is a black background and a grey silhouette for a user image. Any Idea why this is? [link] [comments] |
Nvidia Driver issues help request Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:11 AM PDT I'm using 64-bit Mint.20 off of a MSI B150M Mortar mobo. I can't get any legacy boot mode going so I can't disable Secure Boot, which I want to do so I can install a specific unsigned driver for the Nvidia GTX760 (for Linux from OEM direct). Can anybody help with a workaround to either issue please, or alternatives, so I can use my GPU configured? Reason I want this is; as it stands, my display works generically just from UEFI/firmware. I can use the X.org nouveau driver, but it isn't configurable and gives a constant system alert nag for the proprietary drivers. I can install the metapackage nvidia-driver-440 or binary driver nvidia-340, the nag goes away, but Nvidia X Server Settings just comes up blank. Fairly sure that is due to correct device drivers not being installed. Also if anyone can be bothered to help out with the info as to why my Linux install seems to UEFI boot exclusive (like, did I miss an option out at install? Or is it a property of OS?), that would be handy to know but not crucial to this issue... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:55 AM PDT This is literally my first day after switching to Manjaro on my main PC and I have no idea what the install instructions for this mean. Elementary OS dosent go past logo screen Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:19 AM PDT So i installed elementary OS on my laptop. After using it for a bit i wanted to try KDE. I followed an online tutorial to install KDE desktop environment, chose sddm and rebooted. After I reboot its stuck at the elmentary OS logo screen for hours without changing. Holding shift to get into grub dosen't work. My bios is also very poorly made so booting from usb to reinstall isn't an option (I installed elementary via the windows advanced recovery setting) is there a way to fix this issue? Enable repeat key presses for caps lock? Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:54 AM PDT I'm running Pop_OS and I've changed the settings so that my caps lock key acts as an additional backspace, but when I hold down the caps lock key it only deletes 1 letter. When I hold down the backspace key it deletes multiples letters. How can I get is so that holding down the caps lock key repeats the press such that multiple letters are deleted? [link] [comments] |

Should I remove all data from my hard drives on windows before switching to Linux? Posted: 01 Aug 2020 04:38 AM PDT Hello. I've already made the decision to switch from Windows to Linux (specifically parrot OS, I like the way it looks and the security it provides) and I have everything ready to go, it's just one thing that I can't find info on. Should I wipe my hard drives on Windows before switching, and if I don't, will that affect hard drive space on Linux? I'm new to a lot of Linux stuff and I've never properly switched OS before. I don't have anything important on my PC, and everything I have installed is for windows. [link] [comments] |
