Flexible 1500$ Budget, Video Editing/Rendering Laptop, Advice Pls

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:32 AM PDT

My Current Laptop that i work with needs to be sent in for some repairs. 32GB , 2060RTX , i7 8750.

Was looking at just getting a <= 1000$ Range laptop for a backup and to hold me over for work, until I could get my current laptop back after sending it in. But saw that prices and tech atm seem pretty good so want to get a second Editing Rendering Machine, maybe even a better one.

Thermals Cooling and Build quality are really important to me for what I'm looking for. A good screen color gamut would be next on the list and great as well, I usually edit on externals but having a good color accuracy would be much appreciated. I use Adobe products, Pr Ae Au Ps Ai An Id , in that priority order. I work with both 1080p Video and 4K. Doesn't really require a 4k screen but needs to be able to handle a 4k workload. When I'm working I can be editing easily for 6hours and longer at a time followed by rendering. I do do some Gaming but not too heavy.

Ideally, I'd like 8cores in a CPU for this machine, and my budget can be a little flexible for this but not drastically so. Also, 1TB SSD would be the storage id want around. Any more storage will be handled by external drives.

Pls and Thank you for your help :)

    Warranty Question

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:50 AM PDT

I recently purchased a Strix G G531GW and it came with a 16GB RAM (Single Channel), 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD. I want to upgrade the RAM to 32GB (Dual Channel) and the HDD to a 1TB SATA SSD. Will I void my warranty if I open the bottom of my laptop to perform the upgrades mentioned?

    What laptop should I get?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:24 AM PDT

Which laptop do you recommend I get?

I currently have a 2013 MacBook Pro, I can't upgrade the memory kit because of how they built it. I enjoy editing videos, photoshopping and creating beats or music.

What laptop would you guys recommend. I'm not computer savvy, so I just need a laptop that's Capable and durable with what I want to do. I'm open to spending up to more or less $3000.

    Please help! 🙂

Should I charge a laptop I'm not using?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:08 AM PDT

I bought a new laptop about a year ago but I find that I no longer use it as often as I once did, maybe once every 3-4 months or even less frequently sometimes. Is there any benefit to charging it up once in a while? Or should I just plug it in whenever I need to use it? It's a SSD, if that matters.

Upgrading my laptop storage. Building a PC soon hopefully

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:18 AM PDT

Hey guys, i'm planning to build my PC soon and I need some help in making a decision. I currently have a 3 year old MSI laptop. I opened it up myself recently and just found out that it had an M.2 slot for extra storage. It only has 1 hard drive right now. So i'm considering buying an M.2 SSD that I could place inside my laptop and transfer my Windows on it already so that I'd get faster booting times. Being able to transfer my windows license to this SSD will also help when I already build my PC since i'll just transfer the M.2 card to the PC and windows would already be installed.

Do you think this plan would work, or do you have other suggestions on what I could do? Do you guys have suggestions on what M.2 card I should buy? I'm thinking around 500Gb would be enough to last a very long time. Are there things that I missed that might become a problem or that I should be worried about? Thanks a lot for those who could help! I appreciate it.

    Buying a professional laptop

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:07 AM PDT

Hello all, I really don't know a lot about computers and laptop, and Hope some of you there could guide me in the process of buying a new one. Also english isn't m'y first language, I Hope I will be readable.

So here is my situation: I had this laptop (Lenovo ideapad 330s, with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U) for two years now, but recently it started having a lot of problems (slowing down, the sound is horrible, it shuts down for no reason while I am using it). After having brought it to repair, the guy at the store was rather explicit regarding the state of this computer (he adivsed me to reset it, which I did, but it hasn't changed anything, it is even worst) .

He kept on telling me that these 200/300 euros laptops you can buy in malls and big stores are made of plastic and won't last more than 2 years. He then advised me to change for professional computers way more reliable and solid. I am a student and primarly need to have a computer I can move around easily, thus, he advised me to buy a computer of the HP ProBook range, of small size and with an Intel processor (telling me AMD is made of cheap pieces). Furthermore, he was himself selling reconditioned computers of this range, and assured me that such laptops, if taken care of, could last for at least 5 to 10 years. His computers are ranging from 600 to 800 euros, which is an investment I am willing to make, if all he tells me is true. The guy seems fair according to his Google ratings (4.7/5 for 73 reviens)

I Haven't bought anything so far, but am really considering investing in a computer for the long term (I had 3 laptops in 7 years, which is not good regarding my budget). I would only use my computer for personnel and professional tasks, playing little to no games on it and always very light ones. Therefore, I was hoping some advices from people here, do you think his speech was accurate ? Do you know any model from 600 to 1000 euros worth investing that will last me a long time? Is buying reconditioned computers a good option?

I know the post is quite long but thanks you to all the ones Reading and helping me in this quest !

    FORM :

    Budget - 600 to 1000 euros, France

    Refurbs / Used - Maybe

Prioritize - computer battery, longevity, solidity relative to Travel

Weight/thiness - does not matter to me

    Screen size - N/A

Programs/Games - statistic programs like R studio, light games like Minecraft

    Gaming - nothing specific required

    Requirement - reliable build quality

Others - Nothing I Can think of

How to conserve battery life on Sager NP8152-G with nVidia GTX 1060 but no integrated graphics

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:18 AM PDT

I have a Sager NP8152-S (Clevo P650RP6-G) that's getting a bit older. The battery life has always been very poor, however I am happy with the laptop otherwise and don't care to get a new one yet. When not plugged in, I always use Windows 10's "Battery Saver" mode, and manually turn down the brightness a bit. I get about an hour of use this way, now. With a full charge, I unplug and get 91% remaining, and the PC hibernates at about 6% remaining.

    1. Anything else I could be doing with my GPU settings to save battery life? I've already cleaned out the dust from inside, but my fans are always spinning quite loudly, and I know the GPU runs strong and hot all the time, but it would be great to "turn it down" or otherwise save some watts on the GPU. But I don't see anyway to set the GPU to a low-power mode at all. Anywhere I should be looking?

    2. Windows battery report (powercfg /batteryreport) seems to indicate that I am down to about a capacity of 40 Wh, down from a rating of 58 Wh and a original measurement of 68 Wh. I guess this means I am at 60% of the battery's new capacity and 70% of the rated capacity. Overdue for a new one, or is there any way to cope? If I do get a new battery, is there a higher capacity one available?

I'm running down my battery with normal use, "Battery Saver" mode, and half brightness now; I'll post my Windows battery report (powercfg /batteryreport) in a comment below.

(EDIT: title model was slightly off, it is a Sager NP8152-S)

UPDATE: I was able to re-enable MS-Hybrid graphics via the BIOS to make my Intel GPU appear, which I didn't realize I had. We'll do another test and see how long things last now.
