Laptop for University work and programming Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:23 PM PDT - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Less than 1500 CAD - Are you open to refurbs/used?
I want the laptop to be new - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life, form factor (I want an ultrabook), performance, build quality are all roughly equal in priority. If I had to choose I think battery and performance are slightly more important. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
As thin and light as possible - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Any screen between 13 and 15 inches - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I probably won't be gaming on it since it's mostly for school work and programming. I also do not intend to use CAD or do any photo/video editing. I'll mostly be running programs from microsoft office and programming IDE's. Besides that, just normal web browsing, media consumption, etc. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I do not intend to use it for gaming - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard, reliable build quality, and trackpad is preferred. I don't especially care about touch-screen and fingerprint readers. I don't need an optical drive. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm mainly going to be using the laptop for programming so it just needs to be able to smoothly run IDEs such as intelliJ and pycharm. Before this I was mainly looking at the dell xps 15 7590 and dell xps 13 7390. However I'll probably only be able to get a lower spec model so I'm not sure if it is worth it given how well the ryzen 4000 processors seem to be performing. If anyone could also address whether or not getting a low spec xps is worth it that would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/So0Ep1c [link] [comments] |
What laptop do you suggest for my specific usage? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:54 AM PDT - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around $2000-2500, either U.S or Brazil, but most likely the U.S. - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance > battery life > thin > and light. No need for 2 in 1. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Both are very important. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6'' or 17'' - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
From Senior Year High School to Business School to Work-Life (around 4-6 years of use). It means I will do a lot of productivity tasks on Excel, PowerPoint, Word, as well as some video and photo editing, and heavy browsing. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Rarely gaming, if ever. I play FPS games but I don't want to game while in college. - Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch-screen and finger-print reader (not a must, but great to have), Full-HD or 4K/UHD, vibrant colors, and a screen that does not get dirty easily. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I did a lot of research and stopped at three options, but still cannot decide: - New Dell XPS 15 Touch Laptop, either Full HD or UHD+
- MacBook Pro
- Razer Blade 15 (any with 144Hz screen).
I mostly like the MacBook Pro for its design (screen, touch panel, keyboard). Although I don't want to game, Razer Blade 15 settings are tempting, and I am not sure whether the XPS 15 is better or not in terms of software performance. I like the Dell XPS 15 Touch Laptop for its design, screen quality, features (touch), and brand reliability, although I'm afraid I won't get used to the 60Hz screen since I've been using 144Hz for years. What are the pros and cons of my options? What other laptops should I consider? Thank you!!! submitted by /u/thiagowinters [link] [comments] |
[UK] Laptop for maths degree, some gaming & watching videos 800-1300GBP Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:08 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Are you open to refurbs/used? * Only new How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - I'd rather have something thinner. Good build quality, no flimsy plastic. A long battery life would be preferable. I don't want to be leaving it charged in constantly. No idea how long laptops hold charge for but would 8 hours of charge be feasible?
How important is weight and thinness to you? - Looking for a laptop which doesn't weigh an insane amount, easy to transport. Hopefully be able to fit within a backpack.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. - 15" sounds ideal honestly. I'm not sure I'd want to go much bigger.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - Probably going to be using some matlab, some simple coding. I don't imagine either of those will be too demanding. Games wise I don't play anything too demanding mostly league some csgo and the occasional AAA game, although I play with settings all turned down to low/very low no matter what I play usually so that shouldn't be an issue. For the purpose of this just assume I'm playing lightweight games such as cs and lol.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - Like I mentioned above. I'll be playing on low graphics settings. Although I would like to maintain 60+ FPS.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - A nice reliable keyboard, nothing flimsy. Touch screen isn't necessary in the slightest. Neither is optical drive. Bluetooth support would be nice for my headphones and for my other pair of headphones somewhere to plug my dac/amp's in Fiio K3 & Fiio K5 Pro (not at the same time).
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - I'm not opposed to seeing suggestions for laptops which cost more. Maybe up to the region of 2k GBP. Although I'd prefer to pay less. But if someone has suggestions for something in this price region I'd ideally want it to have a 4k IPS display with good colour accuracy.

Moving to Alaska, need a decent laptop under $500 to last while I mail my pc from Dallas Posted: 01 Aug 2020 04:25 PM PDT I bought the Inspiron 17 7700 a year ago which weighs about 7 lbs, and I need something smaller, 15" or smaller is fine. Just need it to have an SSD, USB 3.0 slot, 8gb of Ram, and webcam. My budget is $500, but I'm willing to go over to like $600 if it's a really good deal. Edit: Sorry forgot to mention, needs a decent battery life of at least 4 hours, I work remotely and I need to be able to do basic web tasks for data management. I don't care about gaming on it at all, at most I'll be running Minecraft or something light. submitted by /u/UNTDuderino [link] [comments] |
Patiently looking for a Productivity/Gaming Laptop [uSA, $800-$1500, 15+ inch] Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:33 PM PDT ** Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ** Looking at $800-$1500USD, though I'd be more comfortable not maxing out here. ** Are you open to refurbs/used?** Probably not, but I don't know I'm completely closed off to the idea. ** How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?** Performance. I'll be using the laptop for work and gaming. ** How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not important, as I work from home. ** Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ** 15 or bigger. I may end up opting for a monitor, if the price is right for the laptop/monitor. ** Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. ** I'll be gaming, though not competitively. I may end up programming at some point in the near-ish future though. Current work needs are simple (Microsoft office, Chrome/Firefox), but I do tend to keep programs/tabs open. ** If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I've got a healthy backlog of games and no desire to game competitively. Having things look nice would be a plus, but I don't need to have everything running on ultra. ** Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? ** I'd like to minimize concern about the laptop breaking. I tend to average out at about 5 years per laptop and I'd like to keep it that way. I'd prefer to have a number pad on the laptop, but I do have a wireless keyboard I could use instead. HDMI output and an SD card reader are highly desired. ** Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. ** I'm not in a rush to get a new laptop tomorrow, but I'm starting to feel the age of my current rig (bought in late 2015). I've done some light research, and I think I'd prefer to go with a Ryzen 7 4800h (or at least something comparable). An RTX GPU would be nice. I've been toying with the idea of the Lenovo Legion 5 that's supposed to be coming out in August. I've also been looking at the Dell G5 SE and the HP Omen, but I'm very open to suggestions. I would like to grab something in the next month, but if there's something on the horizon (new releases in September), I can probably wait. I might be able to wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals, but that would probably take some convincing. Thank you! submitted by /u/South-Doctor [link] [comments] |
Is this worth it? Posted: 01 Aug 2020 10:29 PM PDT Link to the laptop. This laptop, the Sager NP8378F2 Notebook, has a hefty price tag at $1,899. Because I want to spend an extra $45 for the better cooling and an extra $15 for two 2 8GB sticks of RAM (vs. one 16GB), it'll be even more. My obsession with this laptop is that it has all the physical features I really want (17.3" display, This archaic type of trackpad which I just really prefer, and a thicker design). But I've heard that an AMD processor is better than Intel, so I'm scared these specs aren't good enough (or aren't worth it for the price). Any help is greatly appreciated!! submitted by /u/enxj [link] [comments] |

Laptop for architecture studies and digital drawing Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:31 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
All of my savings for a good laptop, 2500€, France - Are you open to refurbs/used?
I'd like my laptop to be new if possible, but I'm open to refurbs and used too. - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor (I want a 2 in 1 or convertible laptop), performance and thinness are my top priority. I'm not really regarding with the rest. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
It can be a bit heavy as long as it has the performance and the stylus support. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6" is the ideal size for my work. - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm going to use the laptop for digital art that's why I need a tactile convertible pc with a stylus. But I would like it to have a good performance too, so I can make architecture 3d renderings. I'm using : AutoCAD, REVIT, Rhino, Sketchup, VRay, Lumion, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm not going to use it for gaming. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like to have a reliable build, a good screen display for digital art but most importantly an efficient stylus. I want a laptop with the Wacom AES tech for accurate drawings. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm quite lost now... I usually can't afford that much for a pc, but this one is for my architecture studies as well as my digital drawing skills. So I decided to go for it. Previously suggested : HP Zbook Studio x360, good option but I heard of the fan noise and it's a bit heavy... Do I still go for it ? Dell XPS 15 2 in 1, great option but I can't seem to find it in France... Is it out of stock ? HP Spectre x360 2020, nice but the stylus system is unreliable. submitted by /u/AltheaCor1004 [link] [comments] |

Thoughts on the Acer Swift 3? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:23 AM PDT Hello, just looking for people's opinion on the Acer Swift 3. Considering purchasing the i7 10th gen model, with 16gb RAM, 1TB SSD and a Nvidia GeForce MX350 graphics card. Its going to cost roughly €1200. Is this laptop worth that sort of money? Don't know much about this sort of thing so would really appreciate people's opinions before purchasing. Thanks. submitted by /u/SpudtheDog07 [link] [comments] |
Zephyrus G15 vs. M15 Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:38 PM PDT Hey everyone, I am curious if anyone has experience with both of these laptops. I am a law student currently and am looking for a gaming/productivity machine that is in the range of 1200 dollars. I found both of these laptops online, but I have not seen much information on how the build quality of the machines compare. I am aware the AMD spec will destroy the intel machine in cpu benchmarks, but I am looking more for something with strong gpu performance for gaming and a sturdy build quality/good keyboard for law school. If anyone has any experience with these machines or suggests any others I would greatly appreciate it! submitted by /u/HatefulSU1L [link] [comments] |

I started at max $3k but bumped it to $4k to see whats possible. The core purpose would be video/graphic/CAD workstation, gaming, VR, then if possible i've been doing some traveling/exploring to the point of losing all cell service. A Dell XPS as a desktop replacement Posted: 02 Aug 2020 02:19 AM PDT Hi guys, I stopped playing games for few months now and selling my gaming pc. My new job requires a lot of traveling so I need a laptop to work on the go and to dock at home. I was considering the new macbook pro 13 (the 2.0ghz version) when it was on sale on amazon for $1599 but the sale ended so I switched my attention to the new XPS. Now I'm confused between 2 options: - The 13" with i7 and 16gb of ram is currently on sale for $1349
- The 15" with i7 and 8gb of ram is $1499
My use cases is a bit of everything. Some office work, some light photo and video editing for facebook ads, and a lot of web browsing. I don't know how the difference between 16gb of faster ram on the 13" and the 1650ti on the 15" would affect my work flow. Since I don't game on pc anymore, I don't know if I would need a dedicated graphic card. When I'm at home, I will dock it to a 2k monitor, mouse, keyboard and speaker with a Caldigit TS3+. I've also looked at the Surface laptop 3, love the design and screen ratio but the lack of thunderbolt 3 was a deal breaker for me. I want a one cable solution when I dock it at home. Which one do you guys think is the better choice for me? Thank you all in advance! submitted by /u/QuangAnhDao [link] [comments] |
Please suggest a laptop that can be paired with an egpu and replace my desktop rig. Posted: 02 Aug 2020 02:05 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2k USD or less preferred in an ideal world, but potentially up to $3k Are you open to refurbs/used? No. I've had nothing but problems with used and refurbs over the years. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and build quality above all else. How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant. I have a small Lenovo tablet for when I need to travel light. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or larger. 17" probably the most realistic option. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes. I edit 1080p60 videos using Resolve, game at the highest details I can manage (sim and AAA titles, very gpu and even CPU heavy). I also do programming and work with VMs, and I stream on twitch using OBS studio. The more CPU cores, the better. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Some games include RDR2, ATS, TS4, the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator, Cities:Skylines, the upcoming Star Wars: Squadrons, Elite Dangerous, etc.. I currently game at 1440p with a gsync display. Most games I'm fine at high detail and 60fps,but certain games like racing or flight games I want max detail and higher fps. VR support also required (all of this to be fulfilled by egpu) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs thunderbolt 3, at least two ports. Touch screen preferred but not mandatory, multiple external display support preferred. Hell, if the laptop itself has two displays I'd be interested, as long as it wasn't $3500 like the rog zephrus duo. Need to be able to type long-form, so decent travel required. Keyboard backlighting preferred but not required. Numpad mandatory! 32 GB ram minimum, expandable to 64 would be a bonus. Would greatly prefer a 16:10, 3:2, or 4:3 aspect ratio and 1080p on 15", 4k only on a 17". Bonus points if it's expandable with more than one m.2 drive or even a 2.5" data drive, and upgradeable memory. AMD would be nice to help keep power consumption and thermals under control during renders, but I realize thunderbolt 3 support is extremely scarce right now on the 4000 series. Obviously with all the gaming and productivity work I do, a good cooling system is mandatory. Looking to avoid any laptops that are known to have heat dissipation issues at high sustained loads. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am looking for a true desktop replacement. I want to meet or beat the performance of my existing desktop rig, Which has a 3900X and a 1070. I want to move the 1070 to an egpu and use it with the laptop, then upgrade to the rtx 3070/3080 when it comes out. Actual GPU in the laptop probably doesn't matter that much as a result, but it should at least be good enough to manage some light video editing and gaming on the go. I'm thinking a 1660 Ti max-Q would be sufficient. I will be parting out the rest of the existing desktop rig so this laptop will be my main gaming and productivity PC moving forward. I can put off buying this for up to 6 months, so upcoming releases would be ok to suggest too. submitted by /u/FullmentalFiction [link] [comments] |

Are you open to refurbs/used? How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - anything is fine but performance I would puke to run games to their fullest without lag or slowness. And battery life the longer the better but I will be only using it for 5 hours at the most but will need it to last for games for a few hours. If it can't I will have my charger nearby.
How important is weight and thinness to you? Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - I might like to use photoshop at some point if I get into video editing. And gaming yes. For games I really want to play pc exclusive games like Death Stranding or valorant since I play most games on Xbox but might try more games on pc that are only pc games.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - games I want to play are pc exclusive games like Death Stranding and Valorant. Won't play a lot since I play my main games on Xbox. And FPS I just need the main requirements but would like a little more.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - for keyboard it just needs to be good enough for games and if I press to hard when gaming it won't break as easily. Touch screen would be nice but is not needed, just for a cheaper laptop.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - something that might not get as hot as other laptops would be better

HP ENVY x360 vs SPECTRE x360 (13 inch) Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:43 AM PDT Need a 2in1 laptop for uni and note taking and debating between these 2 laptops. Envy is also considerably cheaper £800 vs £1200. Only downside with the envy is its 300 nit display compared to the spectres 1000 nits, I'm worried that the envy wont be bright enough and too reflective when taking notes in a lecture hall. (300 nit display is the only option in the UK) Many thanks. :) submitted by /u/sir_mateeen [link] [comments] |
A laptop that will serve a gamer and engineering student well? Posted: 02 Aug 2020 01:27 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: €1800 Are you open to refurbs/used? No. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I expect a very good build quality and performance, an understated look. Battery life should be decent (i.e. if I tweak some settings I can pull about 6 hours under light load like browsing or typing up notes) - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that much, but the lighter the better as I'll be carrying this in my bag from time to time. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Any size larger than 13 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes. CAD: SolidWorks and AutoCAD Gaming: CSGO, PUBG, GTA V, F1 2020 (and other racing games) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? High or ultra settings at 1080p with 80+ FPS at the very least. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A very good display and keyboard/touchpad would be nice. The build quality should be good enough that I can reliably use the laptop for at least three years. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If the budget isn't enough to meet all the criteria I have listed please let me know and tell me what compromises I need to make. Thank you! :) submitted by /u/metemeister [link] [comments] |
Question on gaming laptop Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:00 PM PDT My Dad is interested in getting a new laptop to play the new Microsoft Flight Simulator. System requirements: RECOMMENDED: - Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
- OS: Windows 10
- Processor: Intel i5-8400 | AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
- Memory: 16 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970 | AMD Radeon RX 590
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 4 GB available space
He is looking at purchasing this laptop: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-15-6-4k-ultra-hd-touch-screen-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-1tb-ssd-gun-gray/6373043.p?skuId=6373043 My question is that I have been out of the PC gaming world for about 10 years so I'm lost on new specs. Would this laptop work? Is there something else that would work better? His budget is around $1500. This will probably be the only game he will play and will use the laptop for general use as well as playing this game. If he can get vivid colors and performance on a less expensive computer that would be OK too. Thank you in advance submitted by /u/KentheRN [link] [comments] |
Laptop for coding and general use Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:31 AM PDT - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$650, purchasing in US. - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No, looking for only new. - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I want something with decent battery life, preferably greater than 8 hours, and a relatively small form factor, preferable around 13-14". I will consider 15.6" if they are thin and ultra portable. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
It is very important to me. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Somewhere between 13-14". - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No editing or gaming on this laptop. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I want a reliable build, good keyboard with back lighting, and decent enough screen to do coding. Upgradability of storage would also be nice to have, but not a deal breaker if not present. Another very important feature I'm looking for is USB-C charging with display output. I've seen many laptops that either don't have USB-C charging, or they have it, but they have no display output. I would prefer a laptop that has both, as I have a USB-C monitor that is PD capable and want to run a single cable setup. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Primary use for this is to do some coding while away from my main desktop, and something to hold me over until ARM based Macbooks are released. I primarily will be doing web app development and some Python scripting (main apps will be VSCodium and PyCharm). submitted by /u/Asdeev_Drago [link] [comments] |
