I began my journey 8 years ago watching people play the newly released CS:GO after my 12th birthday. I knew right then I wanted to build a computer. So, fast forward 8 years, I am about to turn 20 in a month, and I decided now was the time to finally do it. I finally am truly apart of the PC Master Race. This is gonna be a wonderful ride and absolute hell on my wallet. Cheers!

Thank you buildapc and Cooler Master!

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:24 PM PDT

Last year around Christmas, buildapc hosted an Extra Life charity stream on Twitch in collaboration with Cooler Master. There were a bunch of items given away throughout the stream, and I ended up winning a cooler!

After the winners were announced, I wasn't contacted by buildapc or Cooler Master to claim my prize. I messaged a buildapc admin who collected my shipping info, but I never heard anything else of it. I figured it would arrive at some point.. It didn't. I left another admin mail and it was never responded to. I was pretty disappointed.

As a final attempt, almost six months after the charity stream, I contacted Cooler Master directly. I explained the issue to them, and they said they were looking into it. A few weeks went by and suddenly I got a UPS tracking number in my inbox! I was thrilled.

When the box arrived, I was shocked-- why send such a big box for just an AIO? To my surprise, Cooler Master had sent me a whole bunch of goodies including a mouse, earbuds, a bunch of swag, and of course, the AIO! (https://imgur.com/rOkK3fL)

Overall, while it did take quite a long time to arrive, I'm so thankful that they handled my situation swiftly and I can't thank them enough for going above and beyond.

Thank you buildapc and Cooler Master!

    Feel-good craigslist story

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 06:15 PM PDT

I bought a Micron 1100 2TB SSD from a guy on craigslist. Built PC over the weekend, SSD won't initialize. Used a variety of disk partition tools...it's a bad disk.

Not at all hopeful, I messaged the gentleman, said I would only ask once, but can he help with either a refund or a replacement or whatever. He responded, asked for serial no. off the device, got a replacement from Micron YESTERDAY somehow, and traded the good one for my bad one today on my lunch hour. Just an amazing stand-up guy.

Random nice guy, I salute you!

Does running a youtube video while playing game at the same time decrease your performance?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:23 AM PDT

I mean, obviously the answer is yes, but to what extend?

I usually have lots of youtube video pages opened in my chrome tab that I will get to while I game, and I would listen to a youtube video while half watching it on the 2nd monitor while I game on the main monitor. How much impact do these habits have on my gaming performance (fps, frametime / stuttering)? Am I decreasing my GPU or CPU performance in any meaningful way by doing these while I game?

I play very gpu/cpu heavy titles like bf5, I have a 3900x (upgraded from a 3600 to hopefully fix my bf5 stuttering issue, only improved by a little bit), 1660 ti and 16 gb 3200mhz rams (about to be 32 gb rams).

Installing Windows 10 on new build getting blue screen of death

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 08:09 AM PDT

Hi, I've just built my first PC and the BIOS seems to work fine and it recognizes everything.

    Parts List

    • Intel Core i5-9600K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor
    • ARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports CPU Cooler
    • Asus PRIME Z390-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
    • Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
    • Silicon Power A60 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
    • EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB KO GAMING Video Card
    • Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

    Error Description

So, I've got into BIOS and configured my USB as my bootable drive. I'm using an exFAT formatted USB with the Windows 10 iso. I had to install it from a Mac, since that's all I own. But going to a friend's to use their PC to format in NTFS or FAT32. But Windows 10 iso is over 4GB, which is why I used exFAT.

My system recognizes the USB as bootable, tries to load it up, and then just meets me with a Blue Screen of Death, error varies, but STOP CODE: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED is one of them.

Any ideas on what's failed? Is it the hardware? Or just Windows and the exFAT format?

    Thanks for all the help!

Solution I am not a smart man, and needed to update my BIOS.

    Need help choosing a CPU

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:43 PM PDT

So I am currently in the process of saving to build a PC towards the end of summer. I currently have a working PC so I'm hoping to just wait until the new GPU's come out so I can get one of those at release. But I recently had a friend come to me with a really good deal, he was willing to sell me his pretty much new i9-9900 for $230 which is a really solid deal. Since Intel doesn't sell heatsinks with the CPU I would have to get one for like $50. So the total of getting it would be roughly $280. So what I'm trying to decide is if it would be best to go with this or if I should wait for the next generation of Ryzen since I'm going to be waiting for the new GPU anyways. Also since I'm gonna be waiting I could save up a little extra money and possibly getting a Ryzen 9. I'm just trying to get the most bang out of my buck and unsure what my best option is.

Don't make the same mistake I made 2 years ago !!

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 01:01 AM PDT

Almost 2 years ago, I built my first pc, and since this day, I made a big mistake, here's my story, so you don't make the same. Also sorry for bad English !

So 2 years I built a PC, and was very happy about it. Was just to play some time, not a very powerful pc, with a i5-7600k, a 980 ti, and 8go 2166mhz. One day, I learned about overclocking, and I did so with my CPU. Everything was running well at 4.2Ghz (base 3.8Ghz) and I was not having any thermal issue or so.

Some time later, I got interested in high level gaming, especially in rainbow six siege. I was able to have full 60fps, as my monitor was only a 60hz display. It was running pretty smooth, a bit of stuttering, but I blamed my monitor, for the low frame rate. After a while playing on this monitor, I decided to buy a 144hz display, as it fitted better my style of gaming, because I needed more frames (as most of you know the importance of high frame rate and low latency).

Sadly, my graphics card died, and I was able to play on a GTX 680, so I was playing r6 in the lowest settings, but was still able to get around 110fps, with some stuttering. This time, I blamed my graphics card, as it wasn't powerful enough to get a smooth gaming experience.

A few days ago, I bought a GTX 1080, and I got back on high quality, high speed competitive gaming, and everything was kinda smooth, was happy about it.

But there was still a bit a stuttering. I launched one of my favorite title, DOOM 2016, to see how many frames I was getting with this new card. And what a surprise, and not in the right way ! While I was getting around 250fps on r6, I was getting only 70-80fps on low settings, with A LOT of stuttering. Pretty graphic intensive game you would say. But not with a little beast like the 1080. So I turned on a setting, which was giving me information on the performance of the CPU, gpu, and the frame times I was getting. Turns out my CPU was having like a jump every 2-3 sec, having a huge stutter spike... (I was also having a lot more stuttering on no man's sky, and it was unplayable, even though I had a good card.)

I looked on the internet to find if I was the only one with this issue on this CPU, and I was a bit disappointed I found nothing on the subject, only some of them saying the CPU was bottlenecking. Some of them said it was an older bios, too old to handle the CPU. I updated the bios, nothing happened. I came on a website saying it was the result of bad overclocking. So I made my test, downclocked my CPU to its factory settings, and surprise !! I was not only getting a smooth and stutter free gaming experience, but I jumped from 80fps on low settings, to around 170-200fps on highest settings ! (Game engine capped at 200fps)

In conclusion, all this time, since I overclocked my CPU, I was running into stutter issues, and all this time, it was because I did a bad overclock...

Guys, if you want a smooth experience out of the box, right after your build, don't overclock your CPU like I did, or get a good overclock guide on your specific CPU, to get the best out of it. Don't be attracted by the "high GHz", the best being lower GHz, but your CPU being a lot more stable, and smoother framerates.

Wish this thread will help some of you in the near future for your builds.

    Happy building, and stay cool.

Wife spilled coffee in the PC. How would you approach the fix?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:36 PM PDT

The relevant parts (though I'm not sure that will matter much here):

    • EVGA Z170 Classified K Mobo
    • Intel 4512 Core i7 6700K 4.00 GHz Unlocked Quad Core Sky Lake
    • EVGA GeForce GTX 1080
    • EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR 80 PLUS GOLD 750 W PSU
    • G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 4x16GB DDR4 RAM (I know this is overkill, I'm a software engineer and I often work on a side project where I want huge datasets in memory for speed)

My wife spilled about 1/3 of a cup of coffee on the PC ... it was the bottom of the cup so it was nice and sludge-y. I have an old Cooler Master case with vents on top and it dripped down onto the CPU fan, got the video card pretty good, and also landed on top of the PSU. It was shut down by the time I reached it (a minute or so after the spill) and seeing the PSU with coffee all over it, my first guess (for the shutdown, anyway) was from liquid getting in there. I unplugged the PSU, toweled up everything I could see, and set a fan blowing onto the internals to speed up the drying.

After letting things dry out, I started to assess the damage. After plugging the power cord back into the PSU, a couple of lights came back for the mobo as well as the ethernet lights on the back, so SOME power was flowing. I decided to pull the video card and use the onboard video. On doing so, I found coffee had seeped into the connectors for the graphics card. Not good. On attempting to power up, I got nothing - there is a power and reset directly on the mobo, but those didn't do anything either.

I have a 12-13 year old PSU that I wanted to try just to make sure, but unfortunately it doesn't have the right 8-pin connector for the CPU.

Where would you go from here? I can't be sure the PSU is toast, given the evidence of power flowing to the motherboard. I am leaning towards the motherboard being a goner since it won't power up and the fact of having liquid clearly in the PCI slot when it was turned on. I'm also concerned about everything being compromised on the possibility of a power surge once the coffee hit the right part. I can get new parts piece by piece, and that's going to suck given how long it will take and I could wind up with a total rebuild (more or less) in which case I'd rather not be tied to this CPU slot (though admittedly I don't know what's current/upcoming, so maybe I'd be fine).

My motherboard doesn't come with the ability to wireless-ly connect to the wifi. Would a USB wifi adapter do the trick?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:45 PM PDT

Sorry if this is a dumb question, this is my first build lol. My router is downstairs in the living room, and my pc is upstairs in my room, therefore an ethernet connection is out of question for me. Will a USB wifi adapter such as this one do the trick?

    Upgrading questions and sanity check.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I upgraded my GPU a few months ago, and now I'm upgrading the rest.

    Reasoning:

    • I always wanted to build my own PC. I wasn't able to do that since my current PC was sold to me by a co-worker for $250. Now I have an opportunity to really make it mine. I know that sounds dumb lol.

    • I want a smaller form factor. My current case is huge with an EATX board.

    • More power, of course.

    This is my current system:

Here is the upgrade I want to go with. I already have the mobo ordered.

    Total $545.85

Is this a worthwhile upgrade? I use my PC for mostly gaming and Photoshop/Illustrator. My display is 1440p/144hz.

I hear the 3600x isn't not worth the extra cash over the regular 3600, but is 3700X worth the extra $85ish?

Do I need 32Gb of ram or is 16Gb good?

Side note: I know people are going to want the story of why this guy sold me the PC for $250. He sold it because it wouldn't boot to to a cpu fan error. Turns out the cooler wasn't plugged in. I explained this to him and insisted he take it back. He refused because his ex girlfriend bought it for him and he didn't like to be reminded of her. I still insisted, but he kept refusing and said it would be good karma for him lol.

    What's so wrong with RGB?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 12:37 PM PDT

It's probably the biggest meme in this "pc building community" if that's even a thing, but I just want to know, is it really so wrong? I know it gets memed a lot because people overdo it, but is having rgb on your ram really so great a sin? You know what? I do want all my peripherals to glow all the colors of the rainbow, and yeah, I do want to see inside my PC, all the bits and bobs do look cooler glowing violently red.

I ask of you, is it all that bad to have a little fun?

edit: to people saying it's my build, who gives a shit, do what you want, I mean, I guess that's right, but I've never actually built a PC so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    BITLOCKER issue after SSD install

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:31 PM PDT

I have just finished installing my new NVME SSD, after removing my old HDD which still had OS. Fresh windows download on the SSD, so now i want to plug the HDD back in to format it as a storage space, but am greeted with a Bitlocker key issue.

I now also cant seem to log onto windows with my SSD. Would this be because there are two OS in the laptop now?

PC freezes but I can still move my mouse around

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:23 PM PDT

For reference, my parts list is below:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600

    GPU: GTX 2060 Super

Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX (8Gb x 2)

Memory (HDD) : WD Blue 1 Tb HDD

Memory (SSD): WD SN750 Black (w/ Heatsink)

My OS is installed onto my SSD.

I recently built my first gaming PC and everything has been great so far. But within the last week, I have run into an issue where sometimes my PC will freeze but I can still minimize and open windows but no program responds to any input. This includes not being able to shut down or restart my PC from the start menu. Also, the power button on my case does not shut the PC down unless I press and hold it for a hard reset.

I have noticed this issue seems to arise if I have been on my PC for a while. But it just did it again today yet I have been writing an essay all day and thus not putting practically any demand on my PC.I monitor my temperatures and component usage using NZXT Cam and everything seems normal.

Any ideas as to why this may be happening? Any input would be greatly appreciated

    Building a $500 PC. Ryzen 3200g or 3100?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:19 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm helping my younger cousin do his first build. He researched the 3200g, and with the low price point, I can't seem to figure out why nobody else is suggesting this chip. He's planning on pairing it with the XFX RX570, and 16GB 3200Mhz RAM. It seems to be a great fit too with minimal bottlenecking.

Can someone let me know why nobody else is pushing this chip in their budget builds? If there's a good reason to push him toward a 3100 instead, it would be good to know as well.

Installing and removing components to PC case in 2020

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:15 PM PDT

The last time I purchased a PC was in 2012, and have been using the same PC since.

Back in the day, all the components were screwed together, tightly packed and many components had to be removed in particular order or else they were inaccessible/unable to be removed; basically not user friendly to after sales modification.

After much thought, I have finally decided its time to start anew and build a PC myself. After looking at many youtube recommendations and tutorials, I have discovered that many components are now much easier to remove, parts which were previously tightly screwed and secured onto the case and motherboard are now lift-to-unlock / snap-to-fit, taking seconds to remove a HDD or even heat sink.

tl;dr are all PCs in 2020 like this- with easy to swap, snap to fit components? or are they PC case specific?

My question is simple, I'm buying a recently built pc online from someone and they are asking for $900. Below are the specs , I'm thinking It's worth the trip but I'm not a pc building guru.
