Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:17 AM PDT Hi guys, eqyliq here and i was the lucky winner of the r/honor contest for a magicbook 14. The mods at the honor subreddit asked me to write a review for the honor one, but since i've been a member of r/laptops for a while i thought i'd share it here too Do keep in mind that i'm just an average folk with a liking for computers, no in depth screen analysis or objective noise measurements. said that let's start with the unboxing :) The laptop comes in a honor branded carton box, while the box is quite small the laptop is well protected, as you can see from the pictures the box took a pretty big hit on the corner during shipment, but the foam protected the laptop perfectly In the box we find mainly the laptop and it's charger, the charger is a very compact 65W brick that sports an usbC to usbC connection, really glad there is no proprietary barrel connector. Specs and design, weight I'll start by quickly recapping the specs, the Magicbook comes in a single configuration and its a pretty compact laptop with a 14" fhd ips display sporting a ryzen 3500u, 8gb (2x4) of ram and a 256gb nvme ssd. First impressions after taking it out of the plastic sleeve is that this bad boy looks good. I've never had any high-end laptops due to my student pockets but i saw plenty of them and i feel the magicbook would fit right into it. The laptop is fully made out of aluminum with the exception of the hinge and the thin bezels around the screen. the Magicbook is sold in either silver or grey. I own the latter and the metal has a blue/purple hue to it, quite pleasant to look at. Branding is kept to a reasonable level with the Honor logo on the lid and below the screen. Trying my best at a glamour shot Build quality is good, the screen has a bit of flex to it when pressing down on it while closed but that's normal. the hinge is smooth and on the stiffer side, you can't open it with one hand but it doesn't wobble I can pick up the laptop from a corner without it crackling under it's own weight so that's reassuring. Cuts for the i/o into the body are clean and they don't try to open up my fingers when i slide over them. Ports? Speaking of ports the laptop sports a reasonable level of connectivity, on the left we find an usb-type C for charging and data, one usbA 3.0, and one full sized (thank god) hdmi port. While on the right we get another usbA 2 and an headphone jack, audio from the jack is clear both on battery and AC power. input devices, touchpad and keyboard Let's start with the touchpad, it's centered and plenty large, but not enough to accidentally touch it while typing. It's a "windows precision" one and works pretty well honestly. Left and right clicks are both firm and with a satisfying sound. Gestures are smooth and the fingers glide easily on the plastic. I've heard a bit of complaints about the keyboard, mainly due to the short travel of the keys. but after typing on it for a week i find myself quite fond of it. there is indeed less key travel than a normal keyboard, however the keyboard has zero flex to it, and the keys bottom out very sharply giving a good feedback to the fingers. Bonus points because it sports the Italian localization with the proper accents and the ISO layout. I know that some programmers do like that some laptops sport the international ANSI, but for typing i prefer the more traditional layout. It's also backlit with two brightness levels, the legends themselves let the light thorough making it a "true" backlight and not only from the sides. Function keys are on the second layer, while the first one controls brightness, volume and so on. I prefer it this way since apart from F5 i don't really use them, however if you do like having them first pressing fn once will "lock" it, swapping them with the shortcuts. Between the function keys you might have spotted the pop-up camera, quality is good for calls but it does have a low angle due to the awkward position. To the right of the keyboard there is also a power button/fingerprint reader from Goodix, very fast but somewhat inaccurate. Registering the same finger twice did yield an improvement though. Display The screen is a 14 inches 1080p IPS panel, according to HwInfo64 it's manufactured by Chi Mei, the exact model is N140HCA-EAD. Sadly i don't own a colorimeter or cameras to carry out objective color or response time tests, but i can say that coming from a budget TN panel colors and viewing angles are much better. The screen has a light antiglare coating, it doesn't smear the images but it does reduce reflections nicely. If i had to find a fault the screen doesn't get very bright, currently typing outside in the shade and i find myself using it at 100% brightness. [Tip, Radeon vari-bright was setting the brightness a tad lower than it should be, turning it off helps but nothing revolutionary] On the other hand it gets plenty dim making working during the evening or in a dark room very comfortable. I was quite pleased to find zero backlight bleed, but ips glow is pronounced in the lower corners. Speakers I was really impressed by the speakers! Maybe because its one of those areas where manufacturers like to cut back in the budget laptop segment, but i found the speakers of the Magicbook impressive. They sound loud and very "full", and even at 100% volume there is little sound distortion. Internals and benchmarks, cpu thermals Starting with the storage we have 256gb of a high quality nvme drive, props to honor for not skimping on the quality. The drive itself is a Samsung MZVLB256HBHQ and is plenty fast, both under AC and battery (ryzen power plan, better battery) The drive has two temperature sensors and one of them gets pretty toasty under CrystalDiskMark, but it doesn't seem to throttle. Switching to the ram we find two sticks of M471A5244CB0-CTD, those are rated at 2666mhz but are running at 2400mhz (cl17-17-17-39) due to the Ryzen limitations. Ram is sadly soldered but at least is running in dual channel. 1GB is reserved to the iGPU, but i'm unsure if this has any benefits due to windows dynamic vram management, and is instead just locking away a portion of our ram. For the cpu as mentioned earlier we find the 3500u, a 4c/8t processor based on AMDs zen+ architecture. Since the 3500u was alredy tested plenty i've only run a few benchmarks, if you're interested in something more specific let me know and i'll give it a go.
Peak consumption reported by HwInfo64 was around 18W under battery and 22w while connected to the wall. We saw big improvements in the single core tests while connected to the charger, since the single core boosting is quite limited under battery.
Now switching to realbench we get similar results to the cinebench ones, with big improvements is the Image editing section due to the Gimp bench being single threaded. Modest increases were found in the more multithreaded tests due to higher sustained all core speeds. superposition Lastly i gave superposition a go, since this is a GPU only benchmark our power budget allows for very similar scores between battery and AC, scoring respectively 4420 points and 4500 points using the 720p-low preset.
Power limits tweaking Now you may have noticed that benchmarks have a tweaked part, that's since our dear 3500u has quite decent temps we can turn up the power limits a bit to squeeze out of it a bit more performance using Ryzen Controller. For example turning the limits up to 30w allows for a 3ghz all core boost during the Cinebench r20 run, giving up a small bump in performance over the stock settings. Here are the settings i've used, that the guys in the Ryzen controller discord have recommended for the 3500u. In addition the VRM current was set to 50A. Battery life & charging time Battery life is good, mixed usage with a few documents/pdfs open, discord and telegram running and a few tabs of Firefox net me between 6 to 7 hours of battery with a brightness of around 50%. The claims about fast charging hold true, and even while in use i saw it charge by around 40% in half an hour, quite handy if you forget to plug it in during the night and you have to top it up in the morning. While playing league of legends the battery lasts between two and an half and three hours, plenty for a few matches but keep the charger nearby. Gaming? Now the integrated vega8, while quite more powerful than most other integrated gpus is still a far cry from a proper dedicated card. Nonetheless i tried a few games that i like. Rimworld runs perfectly fine (as expected), League of legends has no problems keeping a stable 60 fps with medium settings locked, and can go up to around 90~ fps with an unlocked framerate. Lastly i played a bit of Kingdom Come Deliverance; now KCD is quite infamous for being a brick to run, but to my surprise, with everything set to low at 720p i was able to reach a little over 30fps in Sasau, and when locked at 30 we can keep them for most of the time. Doesn't look pretty i got to say, and when going down in resolution i found the Radeon Image Sharpening quite effective to get a much clearer image. Heat & noise Noise is okay, the laptop fan turns doesn't turn on while under very light load, however i found the threshold for the start of the fan way too low, at 40C. It could honestly stay off until 50-60C, or even better give us a few fan profiles to choose from in the bios or from the PC Manager. While the fan is not particularly loud it's still noticeable in a quiet environment due to the higher pitch. Once it starts it doesn't really like to spin up though, and will remain at it's base speed even under heavier loads. It does accelerate under gaming or synthetic loads but the overall noise is still very low The aluminum body gets only slightly warm when under heavy load on battery, but gets noticeably hotter when it's charging, in particular on the left side, probably due to the fast charging of the battery? It's still perfectly comfortable to rest your hand on it though, as it heats up mostly on the upper side, far from the palmrest. Software & linux The Magicbook comes with windows 10 home preinstalled, version 1903 and it updated all the way to 2004 without problems. Windows is still windows and it comes with the usual bloat, candy crush and a few other games, skype, xbox stuff etc.. Honor kept it's own programs to a minimum, there is the PC Manager for updating the drivers and connecting your Honor/Huawei phone and the display manager for tweaking the color profiles. Props to the PC manager for not harassing me for not using the Honor branded Radeon drivers, as they are a few months old. I've updated to the latest 20.4.2 without problems. I completely expected it to ask me to downgrade. What about linux? Before booting into a different OS you will have to disable the secure boot option from the bios (f2), the bios is as basic as it gets and it fits all in a single page Basic bios. Black blobs are my camera dying, the screen is fine Now onto linux itself. I'm currently typing this section on a live usb of the latest version of Manjaro, and everything seems to be working fine. wifi and bluetooth work, keyboard shortcuts too. the trackpad scrolls and clicks no problem. Audio and microphone are fine too. I'm far from a linux guy though and those basic tests are all i can do, if you want me to test something in particular just ask :) Conclusions There is no bad product but only bad a bad price as someone famous once said, and the Magicbook 14 MSRP is 599 euros. At least for Italy 599 is a solid pricing considering it includes an hefty 22% VAT. The magicbook is a great all-rounder and i feel they balanced well every aspect of the laptop without cutting corners, while keeping the cost down. In particular considering how HP and other big manufacturer still try to push 1336x768p tn panels, plastic builds, or ryzen notebooks crippled with single channel ram. In addition to the balanced hardware it also looks great, and that's a plus :) My biggest complaint is probably the fan, end even then it's far from a deal breaker (and also fixable via an update). That's it, if you have any questions just leave a comment or PM me and i'll try my best to answer. Thanks again to the r/honor team :) P.S. What kind of laptop should I get? Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:35 PM PDT Hi, I am a student just about to head into university and for my graduation/birthday my parents said they would buy me a laptop. The price range that they had in mind was around 1,000 dollars, maybe a bit more. I want it to beable to work well for school, and writing and stuff, but also beable to run some games like minecraft and maybe more. I'm not sure if I'd need a gaming laptop for that and i think I'd rather get a regular one. But I have not been able to find any good info on what kind I should get. Any input or help would be awsome thank you! [link] [comments]

Anywhere to buy an Asus Zephyrus G14 in Canada? Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:27 PM PDT I know this is a long shot but I have been looking to buy a new laptop and the Asus Zephyrus G14 is the exact thing I'm looking for. Unfortunately it seems absolutely sold out in Canada, and I think the price I would pay to get it from the US would outweigh what it's actually worth... any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions? If not are there any laptops on the market like the g14? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]

would a 15.6 inch laptop be enough for someone with poor eyesight? Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:01 PM PDT Hi guys. So my main question is in the title. i am short sighted and am on a gaming desktop with a 21.5 inch screen and its enough, but now i have to switch to a laptop for school and stuff. I am a gamer too and i saw that in germany you can get a laptop with a 15.6 inch display with a nvidia gtx 1660 ti for 850 euros. for the same price, you can only get a 17.3 inch laptop with a gtx 1650, so i wanted to go for the 15.6 inch laptop. but now i am worried that the smaller display would make me see way less than with the 17.3 inch. so my questions are now. Is it a huge difference between 15.6 inches and 17.3 inches and if there is someone in this subreddit with poor eyesight and a 15.6 inch screen, is it enough for you or not? Cheap-ish USB-C Dock with power delivery and display output Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:10 AM PDT Not sure if this is the right sub to send this but I couldn't find anything more directly applicable. Looking to get a USB-C Dock for my laptop(Lenovo e495) (Pretty sure it's not thunderbolt). Most of the Lenovo/other branded I can see in local stores (AU) seem to cost $200+ for anything more than just a basic adapted. Looking for power delivery (>=65W) as well as (preferably) 2 HDMI ports (one is okay). Other features that would be useful but are not necessary are: - more USB ports (type a & C) - ethernet port Something similar to this [which is unbranded so I have no idea what it is]. Occasional black screen for a few seconds Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:39 AM PDT Every once in a while, my screen goes black. It only lasts for a few seconds. Audio will stop too, so it's not technically just the screen going black. If I'm playing a game, sometimes it carries on as usual. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it just leaves me on a black screen until I restart the game. How do I fix this, and does anyone know the issue? I've ran all the windows and Lenovo updates (this took an age - part of the problem?) and still I get bluescreening. As you can probably tell I'm extremely untech savvy so please excuse my ignorance!
