    Laptop for studying

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 11:50 PM PDT

    Hello there!

I am about to start studying Mechanical Engineer, and I am looking for a new laptop to get the work done. I don't have a desktop computer, so the laptop has to do all the tasks.

I don't know much about computers, but I think I need a good CPU and a decent amount of RAM?

Furthermore I wish to have touchscreen for drawing models on the screen.

I will rather spend a bit more to get a sustainable working machine, than having to buy a new one in a year or two. But of course I want the most for the money.

I hope you can help me. What to buy?

Should I buy laptop now or wait for possible price drop due to the pandemic?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:35 AM PDT

I wanted to get a reasonably priced laptop with good specs for a while. I was about to buy one from a local shop (they recommended Dell Inspiron 15, with some customization like 32 gb ram) but that was back in March and I had to postpone it due to the economic turmoil.

Back then there was a shortage of parts and prices were going up quickly. Now, I have about 1200-1500$ to spend (I live in Poland, so prices are a bit different here).

Should I buy a laptop now or wait to get a better deal? It is hard to find the most recent information about prices and their possible direction.

How future proof is the current Macbook Pro 16 and an Ipad Pro for an engineering/cs student who does video/photo editing, coding and CAD?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 04:35 AM PDT

Is now a good time to buy these products? When will apple most likely update them? I'm looking at the i9 2.3ghz, 32gb and 5500m 4/8gb config. Are these specs gonna be enough for say 4-5 years? I'm bothered by the fact that the i9 is a 9th gen when even the 10th gen is getting smoked by AMD.

Should I just get the Dell XPS 17 instead? Waiting for people to review the XPS 17 cause I had many small issues with the XPS 15 and the current XPS 15 also seems to have a few problems.

Seeking processing workhorse (Mac user/may convert)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:59 AM PDT

    Hello!

Seeking to buy a laptop. I will use it for running music production programs (Ableton specifically, large SSD needed, a lot of mixing down) and will also run Traktor. So it will definitely need to seek and run files quickly. I have a huge music library (about 400 GB) that will continue to grow, but I would like to have a lot of those files locally.. Maybe a 1 TB SSD. I also would like to run something like Elder Scrolls or GTA Online. Or maybe a more elaborate game like Diablo. Idk. Mostly seeking to run a lot of RAM for processing music and using virtual instruments. I am currently on a 2013 MacBook, 500 GB HDD, 2.6 i5 Intel Core, 8 GB RAM. Should I get a 2015 Mac or 2019? Or convert to PC?
Looking for Long battery life preferably doesn't overheat like a mf. Camera? Sure. Also, process video. Using adobe premiere and final cut all that idk.
Are Leno Thinkpads good choices? Also, I'm coming from 9 years of using Mac. May be willing to go back to Windows? I just need a processing machine that can hold a lot of date and can run games. :)
    Thanks.

    edit: budget 1500-2000

    Thinking of Something New

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 04:56 AM PDT

    Good day Everyone,

I have had Dell XPS 15's for the last few years. Before that i was all Mac. But lately i have been looking into the New 16" macbook pros. I have pretty much had it with the dell Quality. But i can say it just works.

My Question? I will have to run 2 Windows based Softwares (Bluebeam Revu & Planswift 10) which i will use Parallels to do. i have done this before ran pretty good. All i do for 12 hours a day look at Architect drawings and Excel and Outlook. No gaming or anything. Maybe some photo editing for myself. I use it at my desk with 2 screens for a few of those hours.

But should i go for the 16GB or 32GB model.

Let me know what everyone thinks. Thanks in advance

    What does 4Gx1 + 4G onboard mean?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:12 AM PDT

    On the website it says 8GB,4Gx1 + 4G onboard, DDR4, 2666MHz.

    My questions-

    1. Does the laptop come with 8GB RAM?
    2. Will I be able to extend the ram at a later point?

In case anyone's interested, this is the laptop: Dell Inspiron 14 5590

On a side note, I'm actually looking for a laptop that is powerful enough for programming (think Android Studio). Do you think this will work?

Hey guys I'm new to the whole laptop stuff, so I was looking to get a laptop that would be good under more than average programming and perhaps a few slight games. The thing is that I'm on a very tight budget and can look at laptops under 10000 EGP( say around 500 usd), if it can have an ssd of whatever size that would be decent too.

Tried to make a PC desktop equivalent of the new Dell G5 15 SE ($860 configuration)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:19 PM PDT

    EDIT: ($880 configuration)

Surprisingly, it came out more expensive for the PC i tried to do everything the cheapest I can go in regards to the PSU, Tower, and the motherboard. Who knows? Maybe we got a better deal with this laptop (minus the ability to upgrade of course).

It's really just a lousy try, most of it is focused on trying to be similar to the power of the GPU and CPU with the same RAM and Storage.

What do you guys think? Again it was a lousy try not trying to get any body upset.

However if there is a significant difference in performance that makes the 2060 mq a better purchase, i will wait until a discount happens. Thanks!

New Dell G5 15 vs New Dell G5 15 AMD vs something else

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:12 AM PDT

I've been using work laptops for majority of the time so always had access to a decent machine. But now I'm on the market for a new laptop and was thinking of getting something with some graphics capability so I could potentially game a bit from time to time. 15 inches is probably the biggest I would like to go as I would still like to be able to take it with me easily. My budget is around £1300, I'm in the UK. I was looking at the new Dell GS 15 AMD and it looks good on paper and benchmarks. But the Intel variant is also good. I don't know enough to figure out which one would be better value and performance. I will mostly use it for software development and a bit of video transcoding. Maybe there are other things you could suggest?

Things I would like: - 16GB Of RAM, it must be upgradeable - 512GB NVMe SSD, must be upgradeable - Dedicated graphics card able to handle CS GO, fortnight and pubg style games, with some other older titles - fairly decent battery life when of the charger when used for coding and general office work - built in webcam

Nice to have: - support for usb c charging for lighter loads, so I can carry my smaller charger with me rather than the standard power brick. - webcam with windows hello support or fingerprint login

Don't really care for how it looks.

    Dedicated Streaming Laptop

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:48 PM PDT

I'm looking to live stream some local bands in my area. My setup is a few cameras running into a HDMI switcher, then into a USB capture card. Then instruments and amps would be mic'd, and run into my interface, then through my DAW (Reaper) to OBS. Hopefully outputting at 1080p 30fps.

So I need a laptop that would facilitate this. I'm in the US, trying to keep it under $700 USD if possible. Size not important, resolution not important. I just need something with at least 2 USB ports (ideally on different controllers) and enough power to do what I need. Ideally, upgrade-able ram.

I've been looking around and I came across this Dell w/ i5-9300H and a GTX1050 (would the Nvenc encoder on this help?) and this Lenovo with an R5 4500u. Either of these seem like solid options? Anything else worth recommending?

Would love to hear your input. Thanks for your time.

    Recommendations for a newbie?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 08:38 PM PDT

Hello! I've been on console all my life and know NOTHING about pc gaming, but recently I've been really wanting to play through the original fallout games as well as just pc games in general.

I want to start saving for a good gaming laptop, but I don't have the slightest clue where to start. I'm looking for something powerful enough to run any game (elder scrolls, fallout, etc) at a good resolution and so on and so forth.

Any recommendations as to where I should start? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sleek laptop for light office work and casual RTS gaming

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:20 AM PDT

Hi there. I really did try and do this alone and appreciate all the great resources on this page, but alas I leave it in your hands. Seems like a very helpful and knowledge community in here.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

    $1500-$1800 AUD, Australia

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm looking for longevity (4-5 years) and reliability, so I guess performance first. Aesthetics next (I do really like Microsoft Surface pros, but anything sleek and minimal in appearance. Definitely not a gaming laptop). Battery life always a plus but not overly important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Moderately.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Casual RTS gaming (Civ, AOE, Total War, Mount & Blade)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    See above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nothing that comes to mind.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My friend who is in the know keeps telling me to get an XPS-13 but it still feels too far out of my budget (EOFY sales pending) I am receptive to arguments to extend the budget if what I need is beyond what I'm currently willing to spend. A big one for me is a long life and a no shame requirement for a good looking piece of kit.

    Cheers!
