    Why the hate on snaps, flatpacks and electron apps?

    To me they look like useful and practical ways to get software, but it seems like a lot of people have problems with them. So, what's the deal?

    I want to switch to Ubuntu from Windows 10 but...

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:58 AM PDT

    In my pc, I`ve got 1x 256gb Samsung 970 Evo (With the Windows 10 installation), 1x 2tb HDD (where I keep all my photos and downloaded files) and 1x WD Caviar Blue 1 TB HDD (empty drive).

    I`ve already downloaded the latest Ubuntu ISO file but I wanted to know if I can Install Ubuntu on the empty drive (the WD Blue) and mantain my Windows installation on my SSD and all my photos on the 2TB HDD. By doing so, can I choose the OS which I want to boot in the BIOS when my pc starts?

    I’m new to linux. I’m confused between choosing distro manjaro 20 and Pop os 20. I don’t want to dual boot. Since I need stable os for my project and other activities apart from learning Linux . Idk which is more stable . Your suggestion would be very helpful.

    Failed to move a 7z Archive, now it can’t be read, but there is a fragment left in the original location named .part

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:49 AM PDT

    I was trying to move my old 7z archive from an older ext4 partition to my current one, but in the process it randomly seems to have cancelled. Not only does the new location possess an incomplete archive, which cant be read, but the old location has a 7z.part file. Is it possible to somehow continue the moving process? I can't seem to figure it out simply from my file explorer UI, but I was wondering if there might be a terminal command?

    Edit: As an update, using ls in the old directory shows the old 7z file, but its name seems to be red, and ls claims it cannot be read (I/O error). Using it in the new directory seems to also show it as red, but it doesn't have the same error

    Edit 2: I'm going to post the commands and more verbose info

    The old directory was ~/Documents/Archive/backup (on a different partition, as this was from an older installation of Linux)

    term [frontear@frontear-net backup]$ ls ls: cannot access 'OneDrive.7z': Input/output error OneDrive.7z OneDrive.7z.part

    Although ls claims a OneDrive.7z exists here, it's actually not visible via the file explorer, even with hidden files enabled

    The current directory is ~/Desktop/Archive/backup (my current Linux install)

    term [frontear@frontear-net backup]$ ls OneDrive.7z

    In both commands, the OneDrive.7z is in a red color, which I take to mean something, probably in regards to it being corrupted

    Edit 3: I ran fsck through a Live ISO, where /dev/sda2 is my current partition, and /dev/sda3 is the old partition

    ```term [manjaro manjaro]# fsck /dev/sda2 fsck from util-linux 2.34 e2fsck 1.45.4 (23-Sep-2019) /dev/sda2: clean, 738853/39223296 files, 76011466/156883968 blocks
    [manjaro manjaro]# fsck /dev/sda3 fsck from util-linux 2.34 e2fsck 1.45.4 (23-Sep-2019) Superblock last write time is in the future. (by less than a day, probably due to the hardware clock being incorrectly set) /dev/sda3: clean, 4362438/9715712 files, 18432430/38835968 blocks ```
    Queries about using Linux, Need Help
    Posted: 01 May 2020 01:29 PM PDT
    Hii, this is my 3rd post since last week, when i switched to Linux [Ubuntu 20.04] from windows, Here are few more queries .
    1 - I always , remove my drive safely, whenever i connect external hard drive to PC, the first time i connected it, there was option, when i right clicked the external drive on file manager to safely remove it, but it was gone, when i connected my hard drive again today.
    Did i mess up something, by mistake? please help
    1. There z no option in file manager to create a new document of any type, googling gave a option of creating a file first in /home/Templates directory first using CLI or GUI , to set it up.
      Is there some other way to do this, rather than creating templates for every file type and software i use.
    2. file type icons, when creating a new file, in windows it has a icon of the respective software which opens it, like .xlsx file will have excel icon, .py file will have python icon, so on and so forth.
    when i create a new file(using the method in pt. 2), the file gets created with file icon, but this only for LibreOffice tools only .i.e. creating a .py python file, doesn't come up with python icon.
    To top it off, when i copy a already created python file, (lying in my earlier windows drive, before i installed Ubuntu on my system) to my current ~/home/Document, it gets copied with python icon on it xD
    i don't understand, what is this and why is it happening?
    1. i have been reading, 'the Linux command line' book which i found recommended by this subreddit and on web, they all talk about, everything in Linux is a file, can some please explain it to me, what this actually means, i mean yes, i did see, even system process are represented as files in /proc , but what does this actually means, and how does it help us, also if everything in Linux is file, then what is everything in windows?
    sorry for such a long questions, its only 4 questions, i just wanted to crystal clear as i can in my doubts.
    Help is appreciated
    I have lubuntu and I was trying to install this weird program.
    E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 6907 (packagekitd) - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
    N: Be aware that removing the lock file is not a solution and may break your system.
    E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock - frontend), is another process using it?
    How can I mass/batch compress separate files/folders?
    Posted: 01 May 2020 03:26 PM PDT
    I'm running Linux Mint 19.3.
    I have 400 folders with images inside each of them.
    I need to compress each one of the individual 400 folders into CBZ format.
    How can I do this without having to manually right click each folder and choose compress-->CBZ?
    Any way to automate it? Is there any program that does this?
    Thanks!
    How To Install And Use MangoHUD With Game Launched From Steam And Lutris
    Posted: 01 May 2020 03:14 PM PDT
    Hi everyone.
    Since MangoHUD appears to be all the range at the moment.
    https://github.com/flightlessmango/MangoHud
    I thought I would create a short video on how to install it and use it with games launched through Steam and Lutris.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97p2Ja5D1go&t=1s
    As usual for people who prefer a written tutorial, see below:
    INSTALLATION
    Terminal commands:
    git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/flightlessmango/Ma...
    cd MangoHud
    ./build.sh build
    ./build.sh package
    ./build.sh install
    USING MANGOHUD WITH STEAM
    Right click on a game, choose Properties, click on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS and type in:
    MANGOHUD=1 %command%
    USING MANGOHUD WITH LUTRIS
    Right click on the game, click Configure, navigate to System preferences / System options / Environmental variables and use the following:
    Key – MANGOHUD
    Value – 1
    Click Save.
    CUSTOMISING MANGOHUD
    Either use parameters listed on the github page or alternatively with a GUI tool called Goverlay.
    https://github.com/benjamimgois/goverlay
    As always if you found that video helpful, please consider subscribing to support me.
    Thanks
    Is there a way for me to run this Kindle2Anki flashcard maker on Linux?
    Posted: 01 May 2020 03:10 PM PDT
    https://github.com/NdYAG/Kindle2Anki
    I'm a Linux beginner and I have no idea how to make this work on linux, or if it's possible, or how I could tell if it's meant to even run on Linux or not. I just really want to automate my anki flashcard creation so I can learn Spanish more efficiently.
    If I could make this work it would be perfect, because then every word I lookup on kindle could be made into a flashcard with a monolingual Spanish dictionary definition.
    If i store my system backups (from ext4 filesystem) in a NTFS drive. Will they keep the extended attributes and permissions in the NTFS drive?
    Posted: 01 May 2020 02:57 PM PDT
    I plan to store my system backups in a HDD with NTFS format. Will acls and xattrs (attributes and permissions) from ext4 be preserved or will this cause some sort of conflict?
    Trying to move /var to new partition lxc permission denied
    Posted: 01 May 2020 02:26 PM PDT
    When I originally set up my Ubuntu server I only made partitions for /, /home, and swap. My / partition became full so i shrunk my /home and created a new partition for move /var to.
    Using rysnc with sudo I am getting multiple permissions denied, all of them in /var/lib/lxcfs/cgroup/.
    I viewed the permissions of some of these files and they are set to ---------- or --w-------.
    Is there a way to move these files over?
    Thanks
    Edit: running Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
    I installed Albert Launcher(Qt based) on my machine running Kubuntu 20.04. The problem is that it is not showing proper icons when I run it. So, I ran it using terminal and saw this. I don't know if this is the problem. Also I don't have Adwaita as my main icon theme. What should I do?
    What is the best general compatible distro? Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, ....?
    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:30 AM PDT
    Hi guys as the subreddit says I am new at here and I wanna use Linux in my new Freedos laptop. I don't know any programming languages deeply but I have some basics and I have been a tech-science nerd all the time so I am totally open to use and learn about Linux. I am so done with Microsoft's spying, pay-to-use policy, unnecessary logs and stuff so I decided to give it but I have concerns and questions:
    1.What is the best distro for general use? Specifically for me : working with docs, presentations, photo and video editing is general use. Also I will be mechanical engineer next year so Linux can work on popular 3D designing, drawing, animation softwares? Most importantly, are the Linux distros doing a good job of providing connections with new GPUs and CPUs? I mean, can I use my GPU and CPU in optimal compatibility as normally I would do on Windows 10? (btw these are Nvidia gtx 1650, I7 9750H)
    1. I know Adobe is not available on Linux but somehow Can I use Adobe cc for free on Linux?
