Looking for gaming laptop (Australia, Victoria) 300 AUD budget.

    Posted: 01 May 2020 02:27 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      300 AUD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Will gladly take refurbished laptops.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Performance, battery, build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight doesn't matter to me, nor the thickness of the laptop.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Mainly just gaming.

    • Hearts of Iron IV

    • Crusader Kings II

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As said above, but CK2 is my primary game. Fine with low quality but 50 FPS plus is a must, will drop to 40 if needed.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No requirements, but I write a little bit so a keyboard that doesn't break my fingers would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Sorry for the budget being so low, but I don't want to use all my money for something I won't use forever.

Gaming laptop in the near future.

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:09 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I would like to buy a new laptop in the near future as my laptop is getting older.

Despite the fact that I did my research I would like to hear your comments and feedbacks too.

In terms of specs, I want to get:

GTX 1660TI I5 9500H 16GB RAM 1TB + SSD 256GB (so between 1000 ~ 1300$ I live in Turkey so for Turkey it would be around 10.000 Turkish Liras but might have a chance to buy from U.S.A )

I don't really wish to go for I7 9750H or RTX 2060 to reduce the heating.

I am really stuck between Lenovo, Dell , Acer and many other brands. Weight and thinness do not actually matter since I am looking for the best thermal performance.

What laptop would you guys recommend? Which has the best air flow and thermal performance?

    Thanks in advance!

    PC for Music Production

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:03 AM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a computer that I will primarily use for music production (Ableton Live 9 Suite) and otherwise general use. I use a lot of tracks and plugins at once so I need something with some meat that doesn't throttle or overheat. I had an early Lenovo Yoga that did me great for 4 or 5 years but it started throttling a couple months ago and then I just spilled water on it last night and it finally kicked the can.

I'm okay with a refurbished machine or even a desktop - although a laptop is preferred. I would like to spend no more than $1k but am will to go higher if I need to. I'm a windows user but I understand that macs can run windows.

    Looking for:

    • 16GB of RAM
    • SSD (minimum 256GB)
    • USB C (Thunderbolt preferred)
    • probably a quad core processor

I just saw another post talking about how laptops are really pricey right now and I'm wondering if everyone thinks it's better wait? If so can you suggest laptops and the retail price I should be paying?

    Thanks Y'all

Is the Surface Book 2 a good buy in 2020?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:38 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    €2500 tops but preferably less.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance, 2-in1, battery

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I plan on spending a lot and so a premium device that's light whilst maintaining a good build quality is high on my wishlist.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-15", prefer 16:10

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Heavy workloads with VMs, software development. Would appreciate the option of being able to game.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Modern triple a, used to ps4 quality so as long as it's a playable framerate on normal setting.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So I'm getting a new laptop. I'm in college for software development. I've been looking into many laptops, and I've realized that I'm in a very small niche. I really want a nicely built, light laptop with a high res, preferably 16:10 display. One of my main considerations is the upcoming MacBook Pro refresh, depending on the size and price of that.

But if I'm spending that much on a Windows machine, I feel like having the option to play a game or potentially get a vr headset one day would be nice. I really dislike bulky gaming laptops though.

In my search I've sort of fallen in love with the 2 in 1 design. The HP Spectre x360 15, and Dell xps 15 2 in 1 both seem like decently capable 2-in1's.

However, the surface book 2 seems to have a better, detachable tablet design, and more gaming power.

The problem I have with it, is that it's already fairly old.

Would you guys recommend the surface book 2 at this point, or another 2-in-1 like the XPS 15 2-in-1 or the Spectre X360 15?

    Gaming laptop, ~$2000-2500 Canadian

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:37 AM PDT

    Total budget:

    • ~$3000 Canadian after taxes

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No, bad experience in the past

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance > battery life > build quality > form factor.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not very. It will be used more as a mobile PC than a laptop.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • ~17", but not the most important feature

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Basically just gaming and internet browsing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Monster Hunter World as a more recent benchmark. 60FPS goal.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Build quality is always important, don't want it dying after a year of use. A decent keyboard is nice, but at home will likely be used with an actual keyboard attached.

Posting this for a friend who doesn't use Reddit, and I'm helping him find some options. So far we're looking at two fairly similar. The only difference I can see is one has a better CPU and seems to be cheaper somehow.

    https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_1925_1920_1924&item_id=166350

    https://www.newegg.ca/black-asus-rog-strix-iii-hero-g731gw-db74-gaming-entertainment/p/N82E16834235205

Thought? Any other suggestions at a similar price point?

Budget friendly refurbished laptop for browsing, streaming, occasional light gaming (USA, $500)

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:37 AM PDT

Apologies in advance if anything here sounds dumb. I don't know much about computers which is why I'm seeking guidance.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$500 usd is the absolute max I can pay but less is even better

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, I would prefer refurb for budget reasons

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is definitely the most important thing here to me

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important. The laptop wont be leaving my house

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to play Civilization 5 on occasion.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

See above. I'm fine with medium settings if that's what I can get.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

An optical drive would be great for burning my old CDs and watching DVDs but I understand those are less common nowadays so it's not a huge requirement, just a bonus. Besides that I'm not super techy so as long as it runs well I'm fine.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Basically just want a functional machine for casual browsing, Netflix/Hulu, and light gaming here and there. No real heavy lifting needed. I would also definitely prefer it not be a chromebook but that might go without saying.

    Thank you!

Gaming laptop - $2000 CAD budget

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:32 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am looking for a gaming laptop that would fit my budget of $2,000 Canadian (would prefer it to be less than $2,000 with shipping if possible)

I have a desktop computer that I game on already so the laptop would be used when I need to leave the house or for light gaming on the couch. With that in mind I don't need a top of the line machine but would like something that will be able to play future games as well. I would prefer a slimmer/lighter laptop that still has a good graphics card. Heat is not a huge concern as I plan on buying a laptop fan for it.

The main purpose of using the laptop will be for movies/relaxing, along with gaming for extensive hours (able to handle 8+ hours of running). I have monitors I can use for gaming on as well, I don't mind having the graphics not be 10/10 or ultra on games, something that could achieve 7/10 would be fine. A great battery life would be a bonus, though would not be an issue for me to have to plug it in as well.

Would like a 120hz monitor minimum at least, 144hz would be great if found. As well as a 1TB hard-drive would be great but could settle for a 512 GB and upgrade later. 16GB of Ram minimum as well.

    Games I play are:
World of Warcraft, Sims 4, League of Legends, OverWatch, Valorant, GTA 5, along with other less graphics intensive games.

A laptop I've been eyeing up that fits my description is

    https://www.newegg.ca/aluminum-black-msi-ge-series-ge65-raider-431-gaming-entertainment/p/N82E16834155330?Item=N82E16834155330

-MSI GE Series GE65 Raider-431 15.6" 144 Hz IPS Intel Core i7 9th Gen 9750H (2.60 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 16 GB Memory 1 TB NVMe SSD Windows 10 Home 64-bit Gaming Laptop

Just wanting to see if there is a better alternative that you would suggest.

    Thanks for your time

Looking for a laptop for school use and to run Solidworks

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:18 AM PDT

I'm currently in high school and I would like to upgrade from my old chromebook. My goal is to hopefully make this laptop last throughout college. I am also involved in my school's robotics program, so I am going to use this laptop to do some moderately simple CAD on Solidworks (a couple hundred parts MAX, no simulations). I've been doing some research the past couple days and I have come up with some criteria:

    1. Must be moderately lightweight and thin-ish, I think 15" should be good for me.
    2. Under $1000 USD
    3. 8gb of RAM, but preferrably 16gb (If 8gb, then it must be able to upgrade to 16)
    4. Dedicated graphics card (I don't think I need a Quadro)
    5. 512gb SSD
    6. More than 3.0 Ghz CPU

One of the laptops I was considering was the ASUS Vivobook s15. What are your thoughts?

Edit: Here is the form thingy

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    -$1000 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    -Yep, refurbs

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-I definitely don't need a 2-in-1, but as a student, I would highly value battery life, build quality, and performance

How important is weight and thinness to you?

-Quite important. I don't want to carry around a 4 inch thick workstation in school.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    -Yes, Solidworks

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-If I did game, I would play PUBG, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Fortnite at about 60 fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    -Nope

I looking to change my old computer (msi ge60 2pe) I need something for both drawing (photoshop) and programing (android studio) I was looking at the surface pro 6 which seems perfect for both but I'm wondering if having two separate device for the same price isn't a better option I have a budget about 1300-1500€ and I like the mobility of the surface and the fact that you can draw directly on the screen But maybe a tablet and a separate pc would be better and if it is, do you know any good model for both? The iPad is good but a bit expensive and I'm not use to IOS..

HP Pavilion Gaming 15-dk0010na vs MSI GF13.

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:34 AM PDT

    REPOST FROM r/gaminglaptops

Hi there. Hope you are all safe. I'm writing to you because I'm wondering about getting a new gaming laptop, as my Acer Nitro 5 packed in and the hinge broke. Repair is over £800. More than it was paid for (It was a Christmas present) So I'd rather just get another one rather than waste money on that repair. So I'm wondering what is better from the two. The MSI GF13 Slim or the HP Pavilion. I usually play games like BeamNG.drive and GTA V. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Looking for a laptop that doesn't drop FPSs while recording on OBS. ($800 top)

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:31 AM PDT

Hello, I have been using a Dell inspiron 5558 for like I guess 4-5 years now, here are its specs:https://imgur.com/a/iEMZ8Dd

Anyways this laptop has been very good for me, I'm in no way and will never be a professional video editor, but I have been trying to make some videos as a mere hobby and would like to know if buying a new Dell Inspiron would help me with the following issues:

(BTW I say Dell Inspiron but it can be any laptop, I just say Dell because that's the brand I used lol)

1.- When I use OBS to record myself it is fine but when I record myself watching something or playing a game (I only play super simple games like Magic the gathering arena or visual novels, nothing too consuming obviously) sometimes the FPS lags a bit, like it drops to anywhere from 18-22ish FPS (I think the normal should be 24, right?)

So I'd like for my new laptop not to drop its FPS when recording on OBS watching something or playing some simple games (I really don't record myself play anything else other than MTG Arena)

2.- When I edit my gameplay/reaction videos (I use Sony Vegas 15) rendering times take too long..But that's not super important to me, I could just let the video render at night or something. But I'd like to know how much of an improvement in time could I get if buying a new laptop.

The laptop in question i have been interested in is a Dell Inspiron 3593:https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i3-8gb-memory-1tb-hdd-128gb-ssd-black/6403450.p?skuId=6403450

So, do you think this laptop wouldn't drop FPS when recording myself with OBS playing/watching something? And do you think it would improve rendering times by a considerate margin of time? Also any suggestions? I think $800 or so is my ceiling as that's the price of a new Ipad Pro IIRC and that's what I was gonna buy but then I checked and OBS isn't available for Ipad Pro so I wouldn't be able to record what I want to, and I need a new laptop anyways.

I guess I could buy a more expensive Dell laptop like one of these:https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-silver/6406489.p?skuId=6406489

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-2tb-hdd-black/6381721.p?skuId=6381721

But I don't think I would ever need a laptop this expensive, like I wouldn't even use it to its full potential or anything close to it, so the cheaper the better I think.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks in advance.

    Here's my questionnaire:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$400ish to $800 USD the lower the better as I don't think I'd ever use a super expensive laptop (Or anything remotely close to it) to its fullest potential.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Refurbs are fine I guess. But prefer new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Battery, Build Quality, Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very important I will mostly use the laptop in my house and probably move it to my bed or something but mostly use it as a normal desktop.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15"+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      OBS, Sony Vegas 15
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I just play visual novels and Crusader Kings II, not super demanding games BUT if possible I'd like to be able to play maybe some more games (Maybe from 3-4 years ago?), but this isn't a priority at all.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Nope.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Just what I said in my post, nothing super expensive.

I want a durable, long-term laptop [USA, 12"-14", ~$1500]. Does the "military grade" certification stuff matter?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:27 PM PDT

    Question Answer
    Country? USA
Budget? ~$1500 (as long as it actually lasts a long time; see below!)
Open to refurbs/used? Iff they're undamaged and will last...
Priorities? Weight & thinness? Build quality > Thin & light > Battery life > Performance > Form factor
Do you have a preferred screen size? ~12 in–14 in
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? No
    Gaming details? N/A
Any specific requirements? Most of all long term durability! Multiple USB ports a must. Touch screen would be nice.

    I both:

    • Want a laptop that will last a very long time

    • Am extremely clumsy

The laptop I'm typing this on is giant, heavy, and had these awful hinges that broke and is currently held together by duct tape, so I've been looking into getting a more durable laptop. I'm willing to spend a lot, so long as I don't have to buy another one for, like, ten years (ideally!). I like the LG Gram, but it's so light I don't know if it's durable. It says it's "passed seven tests of the U.S. military standard", namely something called "MIL-STD-810". Is that actually impressive? Can there even be a laptop that lasts ten years but is that light and thin?

If the MIL-STD-810 certification doesn't matter, what's a a good durable laptop that will last the longterm (probably including me dropping it a couple times), but also isn't super-duper bulky, like those rugged laptops that look like this?

    Thank you!

    My budget is around €1500

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:19 AM PDT

Hello, ive been lately wanted to replace my MSI GE62 (970m-GPU) as it doesnt perform as good as it used to. As I said my budget is €1500. Will it be worth it if I buy a 1660ti gpu laptop rather than a 2060 gpu? And do these 2 GPUs differ a lot? The games I mostly play are Warzone and LoL. I will appreciate any help or tips you can provide me. Thank you in advance.

Are there any quiet laptops around anymore?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:29 PM PDT

    Hey all, I made the following post a couple of weeks ago. My number one priority (very important) is a quiet machine; I don't want the fans running at all really during light loads and I would happily sacrifice the GPU for a more quiet machine. It seems like the fans on modern laptops are running almost always, so I would really appreciate some suggestions for something as quiet as possible;

    Hi all,

I will mostly be using this for my PhD research. I need it to be able to handle tons of tabs in chrome, lots of word and excel docs, as well as store and process huge data sets in statistical software (good CPU, lots of RAM). It seems as though a 'workstation' over a laptop may be what I'm after.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No budget really, I will pay for what I need. I will be purchasing this in New Zealand, but please suggest whatever you have in mind and I'll see if I can get it here.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'd like a very high-quality build, don't really care about battery life too much as I won't be taking it around with me a lot.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    At least 15.6 inches.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use STATA for my PhD, which will involve storing and processing huge datasets (8gb+), requiring good RAM and processing power. I also need lots of concurrent tabs open in chrome, lots of docs up in word and excel etc.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not sure at this stage. Probably not a lot.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like a good keyboard (although this isn't as important) and very good build quality, with minimal fan noise and other noise for the specs I need. I don't need a touch screen or fingerprint reader.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Some other random thoughts/specs I'd like;

    1) At least a 512GB SSD. 1TB would be ideal/preferrable.

    2) At least 16GB ram. 32GB would be ideal/preferrable.

    3) A very good processor is essential.

    4) I really want the laptop to be as quiet as possible. As I won't be gaming a ton, I would happily make the trade-off of having a lower end GPU for minimal fan noise (although I realise that the laptop will probably come with a decent GPU given the other specs I need).

    5) Very good build quality and a very good screen are essential. I'm not after any gimmicky sort of set up either.

    6) Good wifi connectivity. Windows only.

    7) Someone recommended me the Lenovo ThinkPad P53 a couple of weeks ago, however, I'm not a fan of the I/O placements on the laptop. I would like a USB drive on the right of the laptop for a USB mouse, and I'd like the headphone jack on the left of the laptop.

    8) I currently have an ASUS which has served me very well over the years. I would like to stick with ASUS if possible, but I'm open to suggestions of other brands if suitable.

    Thanks so much everyone!

What Points should I keep in mind to Buy a Gaming Laptop?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:01 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

As I am very fond of Video Gaming Like Fortnite or Witcher 3. For the last 3 years I was using Dell Laptop(I forgot the model), it was good for normal use but for heavy games, it was not suitable and unfortunately may be due to carelessness his screen becomes invisible. Nowadays, due to COVID-19, I'm unable to go to the repairing shop.

But this is one case, Actually, I was thinking to buy a new Laptop from Last 6-7 months. I want to buy it from any online Platform. Probably from Amazon.

From you guys, I want to get recommendations to buy a "Gaming Laptop" that can run heavy games, do not get warm too early, and have a good memory and RAM.

So please suggest me one of the best in between all.

Thanks for your precious time here. :-)

    Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:26 PM PDT

I'm buying my first laptop which will primarily be used for gaming, but also school and general browsing.

Looking for a lightweight laptop that is able to to run most games without any issues. Mainly looking at running Doom Eternal, LoL, RDR2, Sims 4 (lol), etc. Also want something as sleek as possible and not to chunky because I will also be traveling some with it.

Not super technically knowledgeable so any suggestions in model, graphics cards, etc. are welcome!

Looking at major brands (HP, Dell, Apple, Asus, Microsoft) because I get discounts through work.

    ——-

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes, but prefer new

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, Battery, Build Quality, Form Factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important but looking for something to game on so willing to find something in between. Will be traveling with the laptop often.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Listed in OG post. Pretty graphics heavy games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Again, listed above in OG post. I don't know enough tech stuff behind that, but looking for something that will run most games very well

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good Keyboard is major (I write a lot), touch-screen would be nice but not a requirement

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Thanks everyone for your help!
