High end 17-inch Laptop wanted for Long term use - ($4,000 budget in USA) Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:16 AM PDT Hi everyone! I'm in the market for a new computer and stumbled upon this amazing subreddit, so I figured I'd ask for some advice here. I basically always keep my laptops for 5+ years (this last one nearly 10, a Dell XPS17 L702X). Due to this, I'm willing to spend quite a bit of money (budget up to $4,000) in order to get something that will let me do what I want in the future. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $4,000 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance first, don't care about battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. I'm fine with a massive computer. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Yes, at least 17 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just light gaming If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Standard AAA games, but not any of the high end first person shooter games. I guess an example would be I would want to play the new Final Fantasy 7 Remake if that gets released on PC. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a webcam (a lot of my work will use it) A good keyboard would be nice A touch screen is ideal, but not a deal breaker Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Additional Things I need/want: 1 - Windows PC - I never got into Macs back in the day, and I'm likely too old to do it now. 2 - Future proofing - As I stated, I want this computer to last me years, so any ports that may be necessary as things change in the future would be a huge plus (usb-c?). Things that don't bother me at all: 1 - Portability - I'm going to use this thing practically as a desktop replacement so it doesn't matter if the machine is a behemoth. 2 - Battery life - I'll be plugged in most of the time. 3 - Lack of a dvd drive - I torrent or stream most things anyways. 4 - Cost - as long as we stay in my $4,000 budget, I'm fine. Looking for a laptop for studying & gaming Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:39 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
I'm looking for a laptop for general (hopefully long term) use and play non-intensive games quite often. Think Minecraft, Rocket League and possibly Skyrim on the lowest settings? I was looking at this swedish site, is there anything there that would be good to buy? https://shop.inrego.se/barbara. [link] [comments] |
Gaming Laptop wanted budget is $1200 Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:39 AM PDT I want 16 GB of RAM, an i7 processor, the best graphics card I can afford, and an SSD and HDD combo. At least 15 inch screen. I want to be able to play Borderlands 3 on ultra and Diablo 4 when it comes out. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 09:53 AM PDT I'm in the market for a laptop, but after over a month of research, I haven't been satisfied with anything currently available, particularly with so many new technologies still not being featured on many recent releases, including 10th-gen Intel CPUs (or the new AMD Ryzen CPUs), Wi-Fi 6, and Thunderbolt 3, and it seems like a renewed appreciation for bigger batteries and 16:10 aspect ratio is just starting to catch on. Not to mention MiniLED displays, Apple's upcoming ARM architecture, and the new benchmark the MacBook Pro 16 has set for laptop speakers. That said, I'm wondering if it might be possible to compile a list of all the high-end laptops slated for release over the next few months, so that I can keep an eye out for all my options. A few I've been following:

AC Odyssey, witcher 3,premiere pro (1080p),after effects, doom
Good enough
-fill here, remove dashes-
I do some video editing with 1080p footage (not 4k) with premiere pro and after effects but it's a hobby and not a main requirement for the laptop. I want to do some moderate to heavy gaming like odyssey, witcher 3, doom and all those popular new games that everyone is talking about. I have an 8gb ram chip ddr4 so an 8gb ram laptop would be good (I'll upgrade it to 16gb). I want a graphics card that can handle any game but not necessarily overkill 4k gaming. (plus the video editing stuff). I prefer the storage to be ssd about 512gb or 1tb (if cheap). If the laptop is worth it, please recommend it to me even of it exceeds the budget. I have my eye on the lenovo legion 7i but i want to explore other options before pouring 1.5k down the drain. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7 Vs MSI P65 creator Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:10 AM PDT I'm looking for a good all-rounder — powerful, reliable, and with a good screen (bright, correct colors). My primary goal is running a small business, which would include a ton of tabs, photo editing, and some excel, although nothing too taxing. Also carrying the laptop around quite a bit. After looking at a ton of options I'm down to two: ThinkPad X1 Carbon MSI P65 Creator I'm not going to list the exact specs, but out of two comparable configurations, MSI has a larger screen (15.6 vs 14), more RAM, 2 more cores, and other minor advantages — all that for less money (20% ($400) cheaper where I am). MSI is also twice as heavy as X1 and has half the battery life, but those are of no concern to me. My question is, basically, what's the catch? Why is MSI so much cheaper while having better specs? Which one of those is more reliable and will last longer with my type of use? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:00 AM PDT So my previous laptop, ASUS X550J seems to have a burned motherboard. It was a 4 years old bulky laptop and it was horrible to use due to extreme overheating, battery that always break whenever I replaced them, and being a bulky and heavy laptop that is just a nuisance to bring everywhere. I decided that rather than repairing my previous laptop, I'd rather buy a new not so expensive laptop and just buy a prebuilt PC or DIY it. So here are the form that I have filled. I'm open to any suggestions and entries not from SG. Thank you in advance! LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Need help deciding best laptop out of 3 options, please help Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:41 AM PDT I need a laptop rather urgently - because of the lock-down I can currently only buy from a certain store as they are the only ones that will allow delivery. So I have 3 choices to pick from. Here are the three laptops: - MSI: GL63 8SD | i7-8750H | GTX 1660 Ti 6GB | 16GB |15.6" FHD - ASUS ROG Zephyrus AMD Ryzen 7 GA502 - ASUS ROG Strix G531GT I know next to nothing about laptops, so I'm looking for the laptop that best meets these requirements: - Longer battery life as I often experience power shortages and require the laptop for work - Able to play ARK Survival Evolved and FIFA 20 - doesn't need to be highest settings - that's the only games I really play - Will last me at least 3 years without needing an urgent upgrade (hardware wise) - Has a decent built in mic - Has HDMI port - Can handle multiple Chrome tabs without lagging out - Bluetooth (not a necessity) - Capable of dual screen / split screen / using two monitors - Durable - I have cats, but generally take good care of my stuff Sorry I suck at this, if possible please help. Laptop for Gaming, Studying and Video editing; budget: $1300-1500 (Australia) Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:54 AM PDT Hi guys, looking for a general purpose laptop with a focus on gaming, studying and video editing.
Up to $1500AUD, maybe a little over if it's worthwhile, purchasing in Australia.
Yes, would prefer new but if it does the job that's okay.
Build Quality, Performance, Battery Life and Weight. Would prefer a balance between performance and battery life.
Not important, prefer it to cool well and be more efficient then a thin laptop.
15" or 38cm should do the trick.
Will be doing gaming, from everything old to new. Would like to have the ability to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on lower settings. I will also be doing a bit of video editing/viewing and photo editing i.e. adobe suite.
Anything from Half-life to Cyberpunk 2077. I don't mind playing new games on lower settings just as long as its viable for a couple of years. A higher refresh rate would be nice feature to have such as 120hz/144hz.
Reliable build quality as I'll probably use it as my main computer for about 3 years. I would also like it to cool well so it's not prone to overheating/don't mind if it's a little noisy. If anyone knows the best place to buy laptops in Australia? Online or instore, with a good reputation and customer service to deal with if there's issues. I saw these laptops and they seem close to what I'm looking for:

$600-$1000 United States, 14" or larger Posted: 23 Apr 2020 09:02 PM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $600-$1000 USD Purchasing in United States Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, from a reliable seller (of course) How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm flexible on form factor. I would like a good build quality. I would be willing to sacrifice some battery life for performance, but this is going to be a general purpose machine. How important is weight and thinness to you? I wouldn't mind something sort of thin and I'd be willing to give up a dvd drive to save a little weight. However, I'll consider just about anything that meets my other requirements. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or larger Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like the capability to so photo and video editing. Not sure which programs I will be running. I would like to do some gaming, games listed in next quesitons. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If I could play Cities Skylines, that would be great, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's not in the cards for what I want to spend. Otherwise, I've got a ton of games in Steam and a lot of them do not need a top of the line computer to run. No particular frame rate in mind as long as a game is playable. This won't be a dedicated gaming machine although I'm pretty sure I want a discrete graphics card. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard would be nice as I would like to do some writing. I would also like it to have numeric touchpad. Optical drive not necessary. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to be able to watch movies and streaming. Which type of screen is better for that, matte or shiny? (I don't think those are the technical terms.) 1920x1080 IPS preferredd. At least 8 gigabytes RAM with the capability to upgrade to more if desired. An SSD drive along with a standard drive for storage, or at least an SSD drive and the capability to add a standard drive later. Thank you for your help. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:09 AM PDT Hello Reddit, TL:DR I want to buy a friend in Canada a laptop under $400CAD but I don't know which stores / models to look at as I live in the UK. Can you help? I was wondering if someone is able to help me help a friend whose got an absolute potato for a laptop. He wants to play with me and my friends some RTS titles, like Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, which aren't the most demanding games but his laptop can't handle it. He's my best friend who lives in a very rural part of Canada by himself so his laptop is his life. He's not able to upgrade because of the uncertainty about his job due to coronavirus. This situation is really hitting him hard and we want to help to keep his mental health up. I want to do a collection with a couple of other people and see if we can afford something that will allow him to play with us but there's a couple of issues and I wondered if you could help.
Any help you wonderful people can share would be great. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 08:12 PM PDT Hi, I'm currently studying engineering in New Zealand and due to the Coronavirus lockdown, I had to move back to my parents' home and leave my desktop PC behind. Now, my University has decided to perform "distance learning" for the next 6 months and I'm unable to run my necessary engineering applications. My parents' home is fully solar powered and can't run a desktop PC, so I've realised I basically need a good laptop to continue with my degree. My desired specs are as follows. Budget: My budget is approximately around $3000NZD (which is roughly $1800USD). I can go above this if needs must but would prefer not to. Performance: It will need to run CAD and other design programs and I would like to play some of my steam games like the witcher 3 and dark souls 3. So good performance is a must. Weight and thickness: I already have an old macbook air for note taking etc. So, this will basically operate as a substitute desktop. Therefor I would prefer good performance over portability. Battery life: As soon as the sun stops shining, I probably won't be able to leave it on charge, so good battery life would be great. Preferred screen size: I don't really mind, but bigger is always better. Specific Requirements: I will be using a plug-in mouse and keyboard, so don't really need good keys and trackpad. However, strong reliable build quality would be great. Finishing thoughts: OS must be Windows 10, but being able to dual boot in Linux could be really handy for engineering but isn't a deciding factor. I know nothing of the laptop brands out there, so any advice is appreciated Cheers [link] [comments] |

Preferably not How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life Would like something that has good perfomance, loads large programs fast, has good graphics and large storage (am also open to desktops if anyone thinks that would be a better suit) How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't mind at all Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger the better, however am not too fussed on screen size, would prefer better quality than a bigger screen.
