Does Windows Defender do a fine job? Do I even need those free anti-virus software?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:14 AM PDT

Currently using Kaspersky Anti-Virus (free version). i used avast anti-virus (free version) in the past, but didn't like how it blatantly tried to scare you with desktop pop-ups. I noticed avp.exe running up my disk usage to 100% and made me think....

    • Can't I just use Windows Defender?
    • And does Windows Defender protect against all malware: virus, spyware, and trojans?
    • What are the benefits of Kaspersky free version other than some features I never use?

Upgrading HDD to SSD while reinstalling Windows

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:53 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade the 1TB HDD on my old laptop to a 256GB SSD (already got), while also reinstalling Windows.

What's the best way to go about this? I don't need to keep any data, so I was going to just put in the empty SSD and install windows from a USB drive - will this work and will I keep the Windows licence?

    Upgrading again to Windows 10

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:19 AM PDT

I had Windows 7 that I upgraded to 10 when Microsoft announced free upgrade. However, only after few days, my laptop did not start and I had to reinstall the windows 10. It worked for few days and it again did the same thing. I again reinstalled (fresh install this time), but again the same result. Eventually, I decided to go back to Windows 10.

Now, I think that whatever bug that was, it must have been resolved and I can upgrade again to Windows 10. My question is, can I do it free now because I availed free upgrade at that time?

    Can't delete folder [Win 8.1]

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:00 AM PDT

When ever I try to delete it I get the error message saying the file isn't in it's trajectory. I already tired renaming it, using and unlocker and deleting it through the console and I have no idea how to get rid of it

Edit: I tried closing and reopening the explorer too but the file still can't be deleted.

Edit 2: I tried using the unlocker a second time after installing some windows updates and it worked. I don't know if the updates had something to do with I just glad it's gone now.

Windows 10 isn't detecting my headset mic.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:25 AM PDT

    Yesterday I switched from MacOS to Windows 10 since I bought a gaming PC. I have a HyperX Cloud Alpha as my headset (if this helps any) and when I plugged my headset in the jack it detected that there was an audio device that was plugged in like usual. It asked what device I plugged in and it gave me three options: "Headphone", "Line In", and "Mic In". Obviously I picked "Headphone" as the audio device. I can hear audio just fine but for some reason it will not pick up my mic attached to my headset. I've already tried opening control panel and set my headset as the default device but it doesn't even say I have any sort of headset/headphone device plugged in. Again, audio works fine, mic doesn't. This worked just fine on my iMac. Please help ;-;

    ctfmon.exe help

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:47 AM PDT

I honestly dont know what i did, but now, every time i restart my computer i get an "ctfmon.exe - System Error Unknown Hard Error" on startup. Ive tried running sfc, dism and chkdsk without any success. The only successful way i removed the error was by deleting the ctfmon.exe file from System32 but i found out when i did, that i could no longer write anything in the "search" funktion on windows.

If anyone could come with any helpful information i would be grateful.

    Troubleshooting : Audio device disabled

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:58 AM PDT

I have a problem which I'm trying to fix: 1. Audio in my laptop (Windows 7) has stopped working. 2. When I click troubleshooting it shoes that " Audio device is disabled - Problem not fixed" 3. I have tried installing & reinstalling my audio drivers and restarting my pc. 4. When I tried to enable speakers in 'Device manager' it was already enabled. And I couldn't disable it for some reason. 5. It does not shows Audio configuration in device manager.

Can’t install Windows whatever I try...

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:43 AM PDT

** SOLVED! see my comment below. **

I am trying to install W10Pro from the latest Microsoft ISO (used Rufus to copy to USB).

Whatever I do, I can't install it. I tried with CSM enabled and disabled, deleted all partitions and even deleted the entire partition table but I keep getting this error. "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation."

    https://imgur.com/a/xlRXAuq

None of the solutions I found on google worked either.

What is this about and what should I try next?

Z390 Aorus Master, 9900k, NVME drive.

    Things I've tried so far:

    • Windows 8/10 & Windows 8/10 WHQL in Bios
    • New USB stick
    • Rufus & Microsoft USB Creation Tool
    • Deleting all partitions
    • Wiping partition table
    • Different USB port
    • Removed all graphics cards
    • Removed all NVME drives
    • Remove all other PCI-E peripherals

    SOLVED! see my comment below.

    Kernel Security Check Failure

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:08 PM PDT

So basically I get blue screens when I try to download basic things, its a little random but also not really because if its a beefy download it will most likely blue screen with "Kernel Security Check Failure". My computer can definitely handle it, my specs are - MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus Motherboard, Samsung 970 EVO SSD 500GB , AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 gigs ddr4 3600mhz, EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 , and a 1TB Hard drive. I don't know what could be causing this, I've tried making sure that I've installed all the right drivers and I'm 99% sure that I did, I've been battling with blue screening since I built this PC around 3 months ago. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Screensaver won't turn on when NIC is turned off?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:51 PM PDT

I can't get my screensaver to work at all unless my NIC is enabled. Has anybody else had this problem? I really don't know what to do about this problem. I don't want my pixels to burn out, but I also don't want to have the NIC in question on all the time.

All I have is a mac.

    This is absolutely bizarre.

    change windows 10 microsoft account

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:05 PM PDT

Someone set up a machine with Home on it and put in the (apparently now mandatory!!!) Microsoft account.

I have to change that and create a new account.

Is there a way to do that?

The machine has an embedded key so if necessary I could reinstall Windows.

Called the manufacturer about that and they told me No Problem as long as I sent it back to them and gave them $10.

There has to be a better way.

I can't turn off S mode because they want to send a PIN to an account that no longer exists.

    It's an el-cheapo laptop.

I used to hate Microsoft but finally 10 is pretty nice.

Now I hate them all over again.

    Help!

    Extending C: with new SSD?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:37 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've bought a new SSD to have more space on my C Drive, I've googled and found nothing that worked.

Someone mentioned that I had to convert to dynamic disk both Disk 0 (which has C) and the newly added disk then I can extend, but it did not work.

Is there a way I can do it?

    Thank you

    Computer freezing on startup

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:37 PM PDT

Hello guys, I recently made a post on r/AMDHelp and was referred here by a friendly guy.

So 2 days ago my computer suddenly froze for 1-2 minutes after I logged in. Since then it happens everytime I shut down and start. And for every start the freezing happens earlier than previous time, for example when I started it now I barely typed my password and it froze. After searching google for a solution I booted in safe mode and deactivated all autostart apps and restarted, still freezing. When it freezes it flickers once when it's about to end, then the screen goes black and after that everything is normal. When it freezes I wait 1-2 minutes for it to pass then I can play games without any problems.

Anyone know what could be causing this? Thank you in advance.

Any application or setting available which would allow to stop and start battery charging at a specific percentages

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:25 PM PDT

I connect my Dell XPS13 to a Dell USB C monitor and use it for almost the whole day. As the USB C is used, the laptop keeps charging all the time (and does not get discharged after 100%). I guess this has affected my battery life as I have not been able to charge and discharge the battery. Is there any app or setting for Windows 10, which would automatically stop charging the laptop at say 95% and would start charging at say 5%?

    Thanks!

Moving an M.2 SSD Boot Drive over to new unit. Steps to take?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:16 PM PDT

I have a 256GB M.2 NVME in a current unit used as the boot drive. It has Windows 10 Pro installed, as well as other miscellaneous files/programs that came with the HP Prebuilt. I'm in the process of building a new PC and I don't want to buy another product key, so I plan on just installing the SSD into the new build. What are the steps I need to take to make it go over well?

I do have a Windows 10 recovery media loaded onto a flash drive. Should I wipe the SSD, install it and then use the flash drive to do a clean reinstall of Windows while not having any of the excess from HP carry over?

Trimming clips and keeping multiple audio tracks

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:56 PM PDT

I like to make gaming videos, and I record with two audio tracks (my mic, and desktop audio). I used to trim my 5 min clips into shorter lengths to use in premiere, but after recording with 2 audio tracks, I can't trim the clips without cutting away my desktop audio. But I also don't want to store whole 5 minute raw clips as that takes up too much storage. Does anyone know of other ways to get around my problem? If not I might have to go back to single track recording, because trimming and exporting every clip with premiere isn't a viable solution. I heard VLC can play multiple tracks but I'm not sure if I can trim the clips

    Windows problem I assume

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:54 PM PDT

Hi all! I hope everyone is safe during this crazy time!

I'm having an issue with my computer that includes constant blue screens. I ended up taking one of my ram sticks out and it solved blue screens for the most part, but now I'm scared to put my computer past sleep mode.

I'm also having troubles downloading things of google chrome, where the download says "network error".

And multiple times throughout the day, consistently, I get "reload" pages on chrome. I also have been experiencing java script errors with discord.

Games like valorant wont open. And other apps don't open as well. I cannot use a lot of features.

Any steps to help with this? Anyone have similar issues?

I'm on windows 10, and my specs are: Ryzen 5 3600, 2070 Super, 2TB Seagate HDD, 120GB Kingston SSD, usually at 3200mhz 16gb ram, but now running 2400mhz 8gb.

Thanks for any help that is sent my way!
