Internet speed is high but then drops to 30mbps after a few days?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 05:34 PM PDT

Hi all, I recently replaced a Netgear r7000 at home with a Nest Wifi. For the most part, all is working well, however I have this issue where after few days, my internet speeds drop down to only 30Mbps down / 20 up. (I'm paying for 400/20). I originally thought it was the Nest Wifi and wrote an entire post about it in the GoogleWifi forum but since then I found that just rebooting my modem alone (Netgear cm600) will restore network speeds (it may take 2 or 3 reboots).

Any idea why this may be?

Office at home now due to Covid-19, need help improving office space internet speeds

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 12:00 PM PDT

I'm now working from home, seeing my clients through video conferencing due to the current pandemic and need help improving the internet speed in my makeshift office.

I currently run an Asus RT-AC68U. Have had it for years and it's been a great friend to me. Sadly, the way it's positioned doesn't allow for a strong signal on the second floor. (200 Mbps total speed and my second floor office gets between 3-50 Mbps depending on the time of day).

I'm considering buying another Asus router to place on the second floor in order to connect by AI Mesh, but I don't know much about how that works.

My questions are: should I go with another Asus router to benefit from AI Mesh? Should I buy another RT-AC68U since they're on sale, or should I spend the money on something more modern and make my 68U the secondary router? Should I line my stairwell wall with aluminum foil to improve the connection (ok, this one's a joke).

I don't want to spend a ton of money, since my work has seen better times, but would be willing to upgrade if the technology has improved significantly since the 68U.

IPv4 and IPv6 work on Xfinity gateway, but router (connected over Ethernet) only uses IPv4

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 09:15 AM PDT

Hey guys. I have a Linksys EA9500 router connected to my Xfinity cable gateway and I'm trying to get IPv6 working on the EA9500 to avoid issues with NAT type on my Xbox One. Also, I want to reap its benefits, of course.

As the title would suggest, I've tested whether or not IPv6 works on both devices, and only the gateway seems to be able to use it. I have IPv6 enabled on the Linksys router in its settings, but every test I run fails. What do y'all think is going on, and how should I go about fixing this?

Preparing to expand my home network and looking for feedback

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:39 PM PDT

I purchased a 20 year old home last year and have slowly been upgrading my home network. I am getting ready to purchase the last few things. I'm going to be running CAT6 throughout the house in a few weeks and was hoping to get some feedback on the last purchases.

I will be running ethernet from the basement through the attic to each room. I am planning two drops to each room, except for the living room I'll run 4. I'll also be placing an AP on the first floor, second floor and garage.

    Already purchased:

    · Ubiquiti USG

    · Ubiquiti NanoHD

    · Arris Surfboard SBG10

    Planning to purchase:

    · Monoprice Cat6 UTP Bare Copper Wire 1000ft - $102.99

    · Monoprice 2x Keystone Wallplate - $0.52

    · Monoprice Punch Down Tool for 66 and 110/88 - $16.29

    · Cable Matters 24 port blank Cat 6 Keystone Patch Panel - $21.99

    · Cable Matters 50-pack Cat6 RJ45 Keystone Jack - $54.99

    · Twisted Pair Radial Stripper - $12.95

    · Monoprice Cat6 Patch Cables - $0.73

    · Unifi UAP-AC-PRO - $133.49

    · Ubiquiti Unifi US-24-250W - $377.98

    · Navepoint 9U Wall Mount Open Frame Server Rack - $86.95

I am mainly interested in seeing if there is anything that I may be missing and that all of the ethernet gear will be compatible with everything. Thank you!

Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite is slow

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:56 PM PDT

I recently setup pfsense and a Unifi Ap-AC Lite. I have gigabit internet and get ~980mbps over ethernet. Over wifi I can only get ~110mbps when a few feet away from the ap. If I go into the living room I only get 20mbps. There is one wall between the ap and living room. The ap is on one side of the wall and the living room is on the other.

This is on 5ghz. I have verified the ethernet cord to the AP is delivering gigabit speeds. This is in a duplex so it is a fairly small place. Not sure when house was built but I would guess no more than 15 years.

Update: changed channel from 48 to 40 and am now getting 250mbps in the room with AP but in the living room I am only getting 20mbps still.

Please critique my purchase for redoing home network!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:54 PM PDT

I'm getting set up to rewire my house along with switching over to Ubiquiti. This means running a pile of coax and a pile of CAT6A (could get away with CAT5E but I figure if I'm running something I might as well spend the extra $100 for better cable just in case).

Plan is to install two APs and eventually 4 POE cameras. Initially I'm skipping the cameras and so I'll just be using POE injectors for APs. In future I'll get cameras and a POE switch.

I haven't chosen my rack yet, but everything else I think I've figured out. I would really love some feedback on all of the component selections - anything I forgot, any gotchas, anything I should go higher or lower end on, etc.

Here is my planned purchase list:

    Ubiquiti gear:

    (FUTURE)

    twisted pair:

    coax:

Thank you for taking the time to look!!

Best budget 10Gbps inter-VLAN routing option?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 05:10 PM PDT

The title says it all. I've been out of the networking game for a while, and honestly I forgot a lot.

I bought a Mikrotik CRS309 switch to network 4 ESXi hosts together along with my workstation, all using SFP+ fiber connections.

The plan was to have each host use a vSwitch for inter-host networking, and use the Mikrotik as a simple layer 2 switch.

Well, I forgot about the intricacies of VLANs, and that you need a router/layer 3 device to send traffic from one VLAN to another.

So basically, do I return the Mikrotik and look for a device that doesn't drop to a snails pace with anything above layer 2 simple switching, or do I get a router and put it above the Mikrotik for inter-VLAN routing? Money is a factor, so the best budget-minded option is what I'm looking for please. Ideally, I'd like to not introduce a huge bottleneck if I go with the router option as well.

I'm lost as to how I should proceed, so I appreciate any help!

How can I tell if my network issues are with the modem, wiring, or ISP?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 09:28 AM PDT

I have not had many issues until recently when I painted my den. I had to disconnect and reconnect everything a few times. Then I noticed I needed to change my UPS battery. Long story short, I recycled the power to my modem several times. And now it does not seem to always boot up properly. It takes several attempts and pauses before it boots up. Once the modem boots properly, everything is good until the next recycle of power which typically is not very often. Looking at the modem log I see errors such as:

    • SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
    • Unicast Ranging Received Abort Response – Re-initializing
    • Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out

    Any suggestions?

Double NAT. Should I put the router in the cable modem's DMZ?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:18 PM PDT

I have a router behind my cable modem and have a double NAT configuration.

I have the trouble you might expect with a double NAT, like devices on one NAT can't discover devices on the other.

Do you feel it is wise to put the router IP address in the cable modem's DMZ? Why or why not? Will doing so enable devices on NAT2 to address NAT1?

EDIT: Does it make sense to just put the cable modem IP address in the DMZ of the downstream router? I get confused because I keep thinking the two NATs should work as well as a switch when it comes to the devices they serve. Honestly, I do not know why they do not route traffic to each other bidirectionally.

Looking to kick start my home lab with a MITXPC, Dual NICs, 16GB DDR4 RAM, Intel Core i5-9400 6 core processor, for $679. I want to use it for PFSense, and just overall VM learning including Windows Server, Linux, Ubuntu, etc. while being energy efficient and small- Would this be a good idea?

9th Gen Intel Core Processor; Includes Memory and 2.5" SSD Supports up to 32GB DDR4 SODIMM Memory, 2 x 2.5" Drive Bays, 1 x M.2 SATA slot (2242/2280) Supports up to 3 Independent Displays via HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA 2 x RJ45 GbE LAN (Intel i219V, Realtek RTL8111HS)

For the price, it seems fair and meeting my needs. I was also looking at:

    -Dell's PowerEdge T40 Tower Server for $569 (doesn't include Dual NICs though, but has a Quad-Core Xeon E-2224G 3.5GHz)

    -HP's HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Intel Xeon E-2224 Quad-Core 3.4GHz Reburb for $699 (I've read on /r/homelab that the Gen10 isn't favorable)

-Intel NUC Intel Quad-Core i5-8259U for $629, however none of the NUC's come with Dual NIC's so that steered me away

What hardware similar in price would you recommend or have experience with? Thanks!

Checking my understanding of MOCA Adapter

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 05:52 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm trying to verify my understanding of MOCA Adapters. I just moved into a space where our office is in the back. Unfortunately, once you reach the front of the house you complete lose wifi signal. My intent is to purchase one of these MOCA Adapters:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077Y3SQXR/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A1JCDPLP2335KA&psc=1

To pair with one of these access points:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DRM6MLI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A3SQ9YFE6CSCS0&psc=1

I'm getting slightly confused online now, as our current router is a netgear which plugs into a spectrum model via ethernet. The modem has the coax on it. Do I need a second MOCA Adapter in order to get this configuration to work? Or am I find leaving my current setup (wall -> modem -> router) and then pair it with the new (wall -> MOCA Adapter -> Access point) up front? This is also my first access point purchase separate from a normal router, so any and all advice anyone has for this would be extremely helpful. I'm considering adding another setup in our attic, and was just planning on mirroring this MOCA Adapter setup if it's successful.

Help, my wife is going to kill me!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 12:40 PM PDT

We're in the same position as many families, and are both working from home now.

She had a Zoom meeting today with her boss and her internet took a shit on her. This is after she's pleaded with me for a year to upgrade our router/modem combo (ARIS SBG6580), which is like 8 years old.

While it's annoying that we have to disconnect and reconnect our iphones from the network a few times a day, and our home automation is sometimes delayed, for the most part it works fine. And I'm cheap. But I think if I don't upgrade soon I will get smothered with a pillow soon.

So I could really use some recommendations.

    • We're in small apartment, but the SBG6580 doesn't cover all rooms for some reason. We need something that will cover all areas of our apartment.
    • We have about 13 devices connected to our network (3 wired directly).
    • I read that it's better to split the modem from the router, so a router recommendation and a modem recommendation would be great.
    • Although I'm cheap, the recommendations don't have to be cheap, I'm willing to go top of the line if it prevents me from getting extinguished.
    • I've heard good things about mesh systems. Is it necessary for a small apartment or will a good quality router cover everything?
    • Do I need DOCIS 3.1?
    • Provider is Xfinity/Comcast and I have 50 down 20 up. I have been looking into 100 down.

    Thanks in advance!

    MoCA Help

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:55 PM PDT

    Hello, newbie at networking.

So I'm trying to get a more reliable connection to my room without running a serious amount of wire to my router which is in another room. I've been looking at MoCA as a possibility and wanted clarification on my current situation.

So in the room with the modem and router I have the internet line coming from a coaxial from the wall. That line is going into a splitter which simply splits off into a phone modem and my internet modem. How would I go about setting up a MoCA with that splitter?

Linux: Not receiving ping reply over direct ethernet connection between two laptops

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:54 PM PDT

I have two laptops running linux, connected directly with an ethernet cable. I know that they can communicate before, cos I did have one set up as a DHCP server and ran VNC over it, but I rebooted and that no longer works.

I have set both up with a static ip address with the same mask (10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.201, netmask 255.255.255.0, broadcast 10.0.0.255).

When computer A (10.0.0.201) attempts to ping computer B (10.0.0.1), wireshark sees on computer A - "ARP - from Amacaddress, to broadcast, Who has 10.0.0.1? Tell 10.0.0.201" with no reply. Wireshark on computer B sees that same packet being sent, as well as a reply "ARP - from Bmacaddess, to Amacaddress, 10.0.0.1 us at Bmacaddress".

When I manually add an entry to the arp tables with "sudo arp -s 10.0.0.1 Bmacaddress" and ping, wireshark on A sees "ICMP - from 10.0.0.201 , to 10.0.0.1, ping request" with no reply. Wireshark on computer B sees that same request, as well as "ICMP - from 10.0.0.1 , to 10.0.0.201, ping reply"

I've tried looking up this issue, but elsewhere people had complicated network setups with incorrect NAT tables, whereas I have a direct ethernet connection (that has previously worked great), and the is nothing in iptables on either computer to block any packets.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Continued switch port speeds

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:14 PM PDT

I continue to have some different port speeds on my switch(I think). I have installed some cat 6 through my house. Some will read 1000 fdx and others 100fdx. I have replaced the keystones multiple times and the rj 45 connector. But no change. But when I look at the uplink/downlink speeds of the ports with 100 fdx seem similar to the 1000 fdx ports. They will all have around 10-40 GB up and 200-1000 MB down. Am I just being neurotic about an orange light on a switch? Thanks!

    Help with setup

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:57 PM PDT

I've decided that my home would be better served by utilizing both of my personal routers, but just can't figure it out. I'm a tinkerer, but haven't done enough yet.

I just got fiber to the house, and I don't want to use the provided router, so it is headlined to my linksys ea8300 (2.4 & 5 share ssid). I'd like to hardline the ea8300 with my linksys wrt ac1900 (running dd-wrt).

I just don't know the settings to make the ac1900 work as well. This is where I'm stumped. Also, would it be wise to have it sharing the ssid? Would the families devices jump onto the better router as they got closer?

    TIA!

Best way to boost basement WiFi

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:52 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

My current modem and router are located within the living room. This wireless connection has a hard time reaching my basement. When rehabing the house we installed a coaxial splitter with one cable going to the living room and one going to the basement. I am trying to boost my internet connection within the basement. Should I:

    1. Get a second modem and connect to the split coaxial cable?
    2. Purchase a WiFi extender?

Or any other options you guys can think of.

    Thank you!

Help me choose: Eero vs. Nest Wifi

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:39 PM PDT

I live in a 1,000sqft, one story apartment and the speed of my WiFi has become a problem now that there are two adults and two kids at home all day streaming video and making Zoom calls. Video calls often freeze and web pages and videos are slow to load when multiple people are using the network. The problem seems to be exasperated by the fact that my workstation is across the house from the router.

My current wifi router is a very old AirPort Extreme so I figure it's time for an upgrade. For reference, my internet plan is Xfinity Blast Pro and my modem is a Netgear CM500.

I've been researching mesh systems and have narrowed down to the Nest WiFi router + point (on sale for $199 currently) or the Eero Pro + Beacon ($299). Can anyone make a recommendation for my scenario? Is the Eero worth the extra $100?

Router constantly going offline, the logs blame a DoS attack

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:29 PM PDT

    Hello friends,

As the title says, I believe I'm experiencing sustained DoS attacks from a variety of IP's.

[DoS attack: FIN Scan] (1) attack packets in last 20 sec from ip [172.217.5.3], Monday, Mar 30,2020 18:19:58

Every time my router locks up and reboots, the log is entirely cleared but as it's starting up, it seems to log an attack. Some back story, I had a DMZ on a network device by accident. I realized this after a few months and closed it. Then I started noticing many many unfruitful requests to the device. Thats when I started noticing various types of DoS attacks. They never succeeded until recently. Every day my router will crash dozens of times. Nothing new added, removed, or updated on my network to my knowledge.

    Solutions attempted:

Provisioning a new IP, unsuccessful. Comcast is unable to control my IP directly. The only way to get a new IP is to re-provision until a new IP is granted, install a new modem to force a new IP, or leave my modem offline for a few days.

At the end of my rope here folks. I work at home and this has been a nightmare.

My wife and I just bought a new home that is much larger than our current home. Looking for advice on whole home coverage

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:28 PM PDT

Hello! I have the original Google WiFi right now. 3 pucks. 1 at the modem in the office (upstairs), 1 middle floor and 1 basement. It does well enough in the 1700 sqft home. I want wifi 6. I want something faster with better coverage. Our new home is 3700 sqft. I've considered the Amplifi Alien with MeshPoint, the new Netgear Orbi Mesh and a single Asus RT-AX89X. Not sure if the Asus will provide enough coverage by itself.

Any suggestions? In a perfect world, I would like whatever I choose to have 160mhz band support to further future proof it.

    Thanks!

What's the maximum wired speed of my router? (WRT54GL)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:15 PM PDT

I upgraded my internet service to 300 mbps. When I connect my computer directly to the modem I can get up to ~260 mbps. But when I go through my router (WRT54GL), I can only get ~46 mbps.

What's the maximum wired speed for my router?

I can't get a clear answer on this. Some say it's 54 mbps which would match what I'm seeing, but others say it's 100 mbps.

I'd be happy if I could get it up to get it up to 100 mbps. Is that possible on this router?

    I need help finding a satellite/4g isp.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:04 PM PDT

So idk if this is the right sub reddit to post this in but I need help finding a isp that offers an unlimited satellite or 4g plan that has speeds somewhere in the range of 16-30mbps down and also under 100 bucks a month(could be a shot in the dark finding one under 100). The reason I'm asking is that I currently reside in central Indiana and have Frontier dsl as an isp currently and have no other options other than sat/4g. We currently get 3mbps down that's inconsistent and they don't bother to do anything about it. Any help is appreciated!
