future college student and have no idea what laptop to get

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:27 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

So I'll be studying Computer Engineering at CalPoly SLO this year, and I need to decide on a new laptop for college. I'm definitely an active gamer, and I really want to get into PC Gaming but at the same time I need a laptop with good battery life, good for programming and coding and just an overall great laptop for a College Student. What would you all recommend me to get?

I've been using Windows all my life, so I guess I'd prefer windows.

I don't really have a preferred screen size.

    Thank you!

Looking for a Gaming Laptop with no Backlight Bleed.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:19 PM PST

    Budget is around $1500.

I'm super OCD about LCD panels and the backlight bleed that comes with them. So my understanding is OLED is the way to go. Thanks.

Laptop needed for Coding and some slight gaming

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:44 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
    • Total Budget is < 1400 AUD, Country is Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • Good Battery life and good specs are the most important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      • don't care too much as long as its not a thick Alienware style one.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      • Windows, running Linux in a VM. (These are the two most important things).
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • 14/15 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • Some slight gaming i.e. Minecraft, KSP etc. Quite a few IDE's like Android Studio, Visual Studio etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      • Minecraft and KSP. I don't care too much as long as its not directly lagging.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • Good battery life and keyboard. Not too fussed though.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is just the budget I have, but would love cheaper.

Laptop Display Upgrade to 72% IPS no PWM flickering ! Help

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:50 AM PST

    Hey there guys!

I am searching for a good second-hand laptop and I've just come out on the Acer serie seems to be good.

The newer Acer Swift 2020 will come out with new Intel and AMD CPUs, but from reviews, we can see that the Intel model has a good screen but it use PWM, and the AMD model has a very bad display (it has only 50% of srgb)
Since I Need a good IPS laptop but don't wanna buy Apple Macbook because I'm not friendly with MacOs (I'm a 20+ years Windows User) I would like to buy a second-hand laptop that I can replace the display to a 72% NTSC or at least 95+ SRGB coverage, But most important part is that needs to have "0" PWM, so flicker-free, or at least it should be free of Flickering after a certain brightness!

HP Pavilion Gaming vs Acer Nitro 7

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:13 AM PST

    Hello guys,

the laptop I'm looking for will be used for photo and video editing(adobe programs) and some light gaming(League of Legends).

    HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec0007nu

    • AMD Ryzen 5 3550H (2.1/3.7 GHz, 4M)
    • NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5
    • 8 GB DDR4 2400MHz
    • 1TB SATA 5400rpm
    • 15,6" (39.62cm) 1920x1080 IPS 144hz

    or

    ACER Nitro 7 AN715-51

    • Intel® Core™ i5-9300H
    • NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5
    • 8 GB DDR4 2400MHz
    • SSD 512GB M.2
    • 15,6" (39.62cm) 1920x1080 IPS 60hz

The screen is my main concern. I have found that display on the Acer offer 92% vs 96% sRGB on the HP one, but the HP is 144hz. On the other hand Acer has 512GB SSD vs 1TB 5400rpm HDD on the HP. Personally I like the design on Acer much more, but that 144hz display on HP is holding me back. So share your thoughts about these two and which one you think is better.

HP Spectre x360 (late 2019) or HP Envy ?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:07 AM PST

    Which to choose?

Looking for best ultrabook with regard to thermals & weight, 10th gen Ice Lake.

    - HP Spectre x360 late 2019, seems to fit all boxes but most expensive. I do question the thermals here though.

    - HP Envy (non 360). Seems to fit most as well, although misses IR-camera and touchscreen (opposed to Spectre), no must haves but as price of Spectre is only a little higher, might be reason to go for Spectre. Although, does anyone know if thermals might be better on Envy so I should better pick Envy above?

Specific model and price in scope:

    • Spectre x360 aw0250nd - €1399

    • Envy 13 aq1220nd - €1025

Looking for school laptop that will run Solidworks well

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:48 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Open to anything up to $3000 but aiming for $2000 or so. Definitely willing to spend extra to get a laptop with good specs and a premium finish. Purchasing in the United States.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I'm a student and really like the idea of a 2 in 1 for taking notes and working through problems without paper, but I'm not sure how much I'll actually use it. I think I might have to forego 2 in 1 to get what I'm looking for. Good battery life is great, but I'm usually working in places with an outlet.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Anything 5 lbs or lighter is fine. I'll be carrying it around everyday so anything is fine as long as it's comfortable in a backpack.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I'm an avid Solidworks user so the main thing is that I can open and work in fairly large assemblies without any issues. I do renders occasionally but I can use school computers for it if necessary. I've been generally limiting myself to laptops with dedicated graphics but I'm not sure if it's necessary. I don't do a whole lot of video editing and don't do any gaming. I occasionally use other programs like Android Studio, Cura, and other CAD software.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I've been spoiled with my current 4k touch display and am hoping to have one on my new laptop. I move my laptop a lot between classes and what not so ideally it will be really well built and I'd definitely prefer a nice finish. I'd like built in USB-A and HDMI but neither are deal breakers. Looking to have at least 16 GB of Ram and an 8th gen i7 or better.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I currently have a XPS 15" with a 4k touchscreen and 32GB ram. It's been fantastic except the charging port keeps breaking and it's been a huge pain so I don't really want to get a new XPS since the charging method has not changed. I kind of like the 2 in 1 but the camera placement is incredibly annoying and the port selection is not great.

I really like the new 2020 HP Spectre x260 15" but I don't know when it will be released and need to buy a new laptop as soon as possible as my XPS is no longer working. The current Spectre has huge bezels and generally seems really big, especially for a 2 in 1.

Looking for a reliable, durable, budget laptop for around $300.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:42 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Country: USA. Total budget. Around $300. Might maybe a little more, preferably less. I'm open to good refurbished models.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't need two in one, I prefer a traditional laptop. I would prefer decent battery life. Just want the specs decent enough to where I can run chrome with multiple tabs open and various MS office programs. No need for gaming.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all important. Durability is a bigger deal to me. It could be built like a brick for all I care.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, just a lot of multitasking between chrome tabs and MS office.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ethernet port, At least 2-3 USB slots, something durable where if I carry it in my backpack I don't have to worry about it rattling itself apart.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    A reliable laptop around $200

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:17 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: $150-$250, US

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Form factor unimportant. Reasonably good battery life is preferred.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not crucial.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Chrome OS.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Basic image editing via GIMP, sheet music via MuseScore.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reasonably comfortable keyboard and decent touchpad would be preferred. Touch screen would be nice but I understand it is unlikely at this price range. A built-in CD/DVD drive would be amazing since I collect CDs, but I'd be willing to sacrifice this since I can buy an external drive.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Really, I'm just looking for a basic laptop that will be reliable enough that I won't want to hurl it at a wall. Mainly I just need it for web browsing, Spotify, streaming, Google apps, email, creating sheet music, and occasional image editing. I'm thinking a Chromebook would be best, but would buy a Windows machine if I could get one of equal specs for the same price without major bloatware. Only looking to buy new, but would buy an older model if it isn't expected to lose support within a couple years.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, ideally as far under $1k as goals permit. May stretch to $1200 for a significant jump in performance / experience.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs for money, battery life, portability. Prefer not to have Touchscreen or 2n1, all else equal.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very. Under 3lbs would be great.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferred. But would take Chrome/nix if you can suggest a preferable alternative to lightroom/Photoshop (need RAW capability) Haven't found the gimp as usable as pshop. (last tried about 5y ago)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"? I'd take 15 but can't imagine a 17 as light as I'd like.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo editing specifically. See OS section. Currently have Fuji x100, and Huawei p30 pro, curious about moving entirely to the mobile.

Video would be nice to learn but I don't do any now.

Audio editing would be very nice (even if this requires an external card/interface). Zoom H2 is the only non-XLR mic I have. Audi is not a priority.

    No CAD at all.

Gaming is not a priority - anything I play would be along the lines of the Baldurs Gate or Shadowrun Returns games or text based/IF stuff.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Intended for travel. Need no Touchscreen or optical drive. A couple of ports for connecting camera/card reader and external SSD would be good (alternative suggestions welcome). Is user-serviceability still an option?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Trying to minimize pack space / weight while maintaining ability to produce quality images. My goal is to have everything I need to produce a print-ready photo so compact/thin/light there's no excuse to not have it with me everywhere.

The first laptop I liked for travel and photo editing was the first Asus EeePC, despite the small screen. Current laptop is Asus E203M, which would be great except it lacks sufficient storage to install anything.

If it's not possible to do what I'm after, I understand. If you happen to be a photographer who lives out of a single bag for months at a time I would especially value your recommendations.

I would for sure prefer a laptop that is relatively fast, has good battery life, and will last for a while . 2 in 1 form would be a great addition but is not that important to me.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15'', but anything works

Suggestions for digital drawing and painting + 3D modeling hobby

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:01 PM PST

Looking for a laptop mainly to get back into digital drawing and painting using a stylus/pen.

I also dabble in 3D modeling with Sculptris/zbrush and I prepare 3D files for printing models on my FDM and resin printers, but I have an old laptop that works fine for that mostly.

Former Mac user (all my devices are super old and can't keep up with what I need). I use Windows 10 for work (instructional design), but I don't really have a preference for which OS.

I've been researching the iPad Pro but I'm annoyed by the limitations of app-only devices, so I figured I'd look at what a good laptop can do for me.

Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1,000, United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Best specifications, but battery life is also important

How important is weight and thinness to you? I tend to like the thin/sleek models

Which OS do you require? Windows or Mac

Do you have a preferred screen size? Larger, as I would like to use it for drawing.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I want to get back into digital drawing and painting, so I may get Photoshop or something like Clip Studio Paint. I also prepare 3D models for printing using PrusaSlicer, Chitubox, and some other programs. And I dabble in 3D modeling using Sculptris/zbrush.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Good FPS is a bonus but not a priority. There are tons of games I'd love to play, but I obviously have enough hobbies to keep me busy.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want to use a drawing stylus to paint/draw digitally, so something that works well with a stylus.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.: I know a lot of people recommend desktops for 3D modeling and some of my other hobbies, but I don't have a place to dedicate to a desktop and I mainly want to draw on the screen. If you could recommend a good stylus as well that would be great. I have a super old Wacom Intuos 3 tablet that I enjoyed using back when I had a system that was worth a damn.

General Use Laptop; 2D AutoCAD Capable; $1400ish

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:47 PM PST

I have posted two times before and each time I've had really great suggestions, but each time something else comes up that changes the criteria. After some discussions with my wife, I need to re-orient myself and try to find a reliable laptop that will be a good hub for everything my wife and I need to do.

I'd like it to have a professional look for when my wife has presentations and is powerful enough to use the programs I've mentioned below. I don't need it to run perfectly with AutoCAD, but I want to be able to run well enough that it doesn't slow everything else down.

    Will any of these work?

    • Asus Zenbook 15: Looks really nice but I've seen some reviews that make me think quality control will be an issue. I've been learning towards this.
    • MSI Prestige 15: Looks great but I've seen a few reviews about heating issues. This laptop has been recommended before but it felt bland to me.
    • NoteB Comparison : Don't know if either of these work but they looked interesting.

As always, all help is appreciated. Thanks again.

**Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

Purchasing in the United States. I have up to $1,200 to $1,400 with some wiggle room. If a laptop that might realistically last longer or have something that would benefit me, I'm open to going a bit over.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

Good battery life is important; I don't want a laptop that will only last a couple of hours. The absolute best specifications aren't 100% necessary either but would be appreciated.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

I have never had a thin laptop and I like the feel of my Toshiba that has a bit of weight to it, but I don't think either are deal-breakers. I think getting an ultra-thin laptop would be a downside.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    I prefer Windows.

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15.6".

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

What I am mainly looking for is being able to run is AutoCAD, PhotoShop, Cura, and a few other programs like WonderDraft, DungeonDraft, FlowScape, and Minecraft. I will be doing the basics; Word Processing, OneNote, Excel, etc. as well as general internet browsing. I will be using this laptop away from home as a hub for DMing a semi-weekly D&D game.

2 in 1 laptop on a budget but also with steam?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:44 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: under $500, United States (willing to buy refurbished from NewEgg or whatever)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is key. My Chromebooks have been great for that. However, the ONLY problem with my Chromebook is an inability to run Steam. I can run Linux just fine on my Acer R13, but when I try to install Steam, it tells me the 32 bit library libsoc6 is unavailable and none of my fixes have worked.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important. I like to be able to fit it in my purse. (13 inch works for my purse.)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Anything but Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch (willing to consider 15)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. N/a

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly older games like Nancy Drew and occasionally Civ5 with my boyfriend. Don't know and don't care about settings and FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard, touch screen

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Engineer willing to build or buy a $1000 machine to game directly on my lap with! USA

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:44 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-$1500 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs are the most important by a factor of about 10000. I do not care for a 2 in 1 in this lifetime.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is mildly important since I plan to carry it in a backpack for an hour a week, but not worth considering before specs, thinnes is not important at all.

I would love to be able to give Fallout 4 via steam a real chance on a laptop that can handle it. Occasional idle/incremental games would be great to run in the background if at all possible. Even (relatively) lighter games like Starbound with Frackin Universe or AOE2 give me trouble. I play a lot of online DND via roll20 and discord running as well. I suppose that counts as gaming too! Someday I might get back into programming microcontrollers, though I won't hold my breath, that's an option too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60 fps would be great for games listed above if possible.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? If it makes no difference otherwise, I would love a right hand side number pad. This is not a deal breaker.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently use a laptop (LenovoT440p) that blows heat on the left side only, making the left half of the laptop, and therefore my left hand, incredibly hot. Considering that I almost exclusively use my laptop directly on my lap, I would like one that has a better heat delivery method than blowing heat on my left leg. I am willing and confident in opening and replacing parts if necessary or possible. I do not know the market or how to make those googles. Thanks a million!!

    Which Gaming laptop is decent?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:55 AM PST

I recently switched to pc and wanted a friend of mine to come to pc as well. He has the problem that he has to carry his setup from house to house by divorced parents... Now he came with the idea to buy a laptop because that doesn't harm any parts during the shipping from house to house.

Now he asked me which Gaming laptop is decent so I wanted to ask you guys since you have more experience with this than me xD

He is willing to pay around €2000-€2500 but any other really good value/specs will do it as well!

School laptop (under $500 CAD), Canada

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:14 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Under $500 CAD if possible, Canada BC

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life, not too heavy, best specification for the money

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Ideally not too heavy as I will be carrying to and from classes

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Will be primarily doing coding on it, need support for direct3d 12, slight gaming

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** League of legends, don't really need anything fancy as long as it can run it somewhat smoothly

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** reliable build quality would be ideal: something that can last for a decent amount of time, touch screen not necessary but would be nice

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Currently a student so don't have a ton of money, would like something that is reliable, meets the minimum reqs, and does't put a huge dent in my wallet. Need it this week or next as my current laptop decided to die on me. Thanks in advance!

    Best laptop review sites?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:18 AM PST

So I wanted to start researching more about laptops (for college) and want to find some reliable websites for laptop reviews. Currently I only know of Notebookcheck and AnandTech. Any other recommendations?
