    Simple Questions - February 28, 2020

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Build a PC they said. It's like adult Legos they said.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:11 PM PST

Legos came in a kit with all the necessary pieces from what I remember.

Jokes aside the last PC I built was when I was a kid using scavenged parts out of bins from my local computer repair shop. I was Dr. Frankenstein and my monster somehow miraculously was able to play the Warcraft games. Even with me having zero knowledge on what I was creating.

Over the past week I've learned, or tried to learn, how to build a PC properly. So I come here today, pride set to the side, to ask for help, feedback, opinions, reassurance and any knowledge this community can give.

Budget is $1000 for a gaming PC. For games like Destiny 2, Monster Hunter World, Sea of Thieves, Anthem, Elite Dangerous. Obviously anything cheaper for around the same performance is much appreciated.

Edit: Wow! Was not expecting to wake up to this much feedback! Someone dropped a gold, that blew my mind. Thank you. And thank you to everyone who took their time to give their feedback. I'm pretty sure now that AMD is the CPU of choice now. I'll definitely look into AMD now. Thanks again everyone!

Fps drops to like 30 for 1ms and then goes back up to whatever the max fps I was getting.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:49 PM PST

I know this seems like something minor but it really throws u off when all of a sudden your screen freezes and you teleport side ways... Thought it was loss at first but noticed in cs and other games like the cycle it happens and i can watch the fps drop and then go back up.

I have installed the drivers before anyone asks :)

    Set up:

    Msi 2080ti

    Ryzen 3900x

    32g of corsair ddr4 3466mhz ram

    AMD or Intel CPU

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:11 AM PST

I've been on Intel as far as I can remember. My PC right now is an i7 6700k and thus a few years old. I've been wanting to upgrade to an i9 9900k because i could use those extra cores and i guess i'm ready to spend that money. Now, i've had my eyes on all that Ryzen business for a while and tbh i really dont have much information about them. All i know is that they have irrational amounts of cores and are somehow cheaper. Is there anyone who can tell me the equivalent ryzen variant to the i9 and pros and cons? Thanks

    3600 or 3200 CL16 for gaming

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:02 AM PST

I go on PCPP alot and most of the time when I ask for opinions on my build people say to get 3200Mhz RAM instead of 3600, I'm going to be using a Ryzen 5 3600, and I'll only be gaming, nothing else

Need a new mobo for Dell Xps 8900, looking for alternatives.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:58 PM PST

So I got the dreaded motherboard failure amber blinking light for my Dell xps 8900. I don't want to buy another Dell Studio XPS 8900 Desktop Motherboard LGA1151 XJ8C4 0XJ8C4, as I heard a vast majority of them have this problem. I've read some post about an another xps 8900 owner who had the same problem and used a Asus h110m csm as a replacement, but he also had to buy a new mini atx case for it. I'm just trying to find a suitable and RELIABLE replacement for my system, I like to play games but nothing to demanding (the most demanding game I have rn is dying light). I mainly use my pc for editing and work, so it doesn't need to be too "gaming" oriented. Literally any help would be appreciated, I understand I'll have to get a new case probably along with the new mobo, I'm not yo adept in pc building yet, so I apologize for the crappy knowledge.

I want to keep the new mobo UNDER $150 please.

    Full build is

    GTX 750

    Dell Studio XPS 8900 Desktop Motherboard LGA1151 XJ8C4 0XJ8C4

    I7-6700k

    16gb ddr3 ram (2x8gb cards)

Psu is stock, can't verify currently.

    Windows 10 OS

    New 3700x build

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:58 PM PST

Hello am looking to build a new computer with a budget of about 1500. I am thinking bout a a 3700x as i need 8 cores. I was also thinking of a 2070s as i game a lot and am thinking of going 1440p 144hz. 32gb of ram would be nice but i could suffice with 16. Now with some additions i already have a Samsung evo something 1tb ssd and a 2 tb hdd so i dont need storage at the moment, and i need a power supply that is powerful enough to power my whole system as well as a gtx 1060 6gb in addition as there will be one in my system. Also i would like to use an air cooler not an AIO or costom

As far as ecstatic i dont care a lot but was thinking of black with light orange accents made by rgb. I have three rgb fans already and highly prioritize performance to ascetics.

What's the hot joysticks everyone using these days?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:45 PM PST

Any older folks remember playing MS Flight Simulator back in the 90's?

Back when I was a kid the cool thing to have was the MS Sidewinder Pro

Of course now that they are coming out with a new version I'm pretty excited about it. But I haven't really been up to date on the best control kits to get to go along with the game. What are the top joystick manufacturers/models these days?

1TB SSD won't let me use 1/2 of its storage

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 04:46 PM PST

I got a 1TB SSD a couple years ago and began using it. I originally had a 500GB hard drive but I transferred whatever was on it onto the 1TB SSD. Despite the fact that it was 1TB, it said it was 500GB in the device settings but I assume that was some kinda visual glitch. Now that I've gotten closer to the 500GB storage used, it's saying I don't have available storage to download anything despite having another 500GB. Any idea why this is occurring or how to fix it?

    Okay to build myself?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:04 PM PST

Alright, so I finally ordered all my parts.

    Building this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CXPbRk

I watched/rewatched so many (reliable) videos on how to build one, but I'm still scared I'm gonna mess it up and basically waste hundreds of dollars worth of parts

    I'm scared and really nervous

When I start building, are there ANY REAL good step by step videos y'all recommend I should follow when/if I start?

i want to thank this subreddit for loosing my friend

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 11:47 AM PST

    Thank you r/buildapc

After several months of researching and searching for the right parts, about compatibility issues and trying to have a decent budget. I can finally move on from my old friend : a 12 year old dual core 2.0Ghz / Geforce 9600M/ 2Go Ram . He was very resistant, a hot head that produced an absurd amount of thermal energy, and making the noise of a broken helicopter just by opening a single tab on google chrome. He was annoying, but he was very nice to me. Always doing the job when it needed to (Very low quality gang rise up)

However sometimes even the best friends grow in time differently and have to move on from each other, and today is the day.

I made my first ever build with the help of a friend, after 12 years of bittersweet pain : https://imgur.com/a/qxspuYI

    My build :

    CPU : ryzen 5 2600X
GPU : Zotac Nvidia Rtx 2060
Mobo : MSI B450M-A Pro Max
Ram : T force Delta RGB 2x8 Go 3200 Mhz
    PSU : Nox Urano VX 650W 80 Bronze +
    Storage : WD 500Go + Pny SDD 240 Go
Case : Nox Coolbay Sx 4 fans RGB

(still waiting for my AOC 24G2U monitor to be delivered, coming in 4-5 days)

Ideal clock speeds for this setup?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:20 PM PST

I have everything working fine right now (CPU auto + Memory auto defaults in BIOS) at I think 2133mhz, but it's not performing at the prices I paid for...

Deployed Soldier wanting to build their first PC

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:33 PM PST

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan until near the end of the year, and as post-deployment present for myself, I wanted to build my first ever PC. I have sort of a general knowledge about PCs but I would love to hear some feedback about this build.

I am iffy on what case to get, and which motherboard since I've heard X570 boards is really only useful if I am using a PCIe 4.0 slot.

Best Case for a High Particulate Environment, also Build Review

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:28 PM PST

    Hello r/buildapc,

TL:DR at the bottom. So here's where I'm at. I'm looking to build my first decent gaming PC ($1,100 budget, mildly flexible). Here's a summary of what I'm putting together, along with current listed prices:

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard ($129.99)

    Case: TBD ($0 - $120)

Graphics Card (Option 1): MSI GeForce RTX 2060 DirectX 12 RTX 2060 VENTUS XS 6G OC 6GB 192-Bit GDDR6 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card ($329.99)

Graphics Card (Option 2): GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 Super WINDFORCE OC 8G Graphics Card, 2 x WINDFORCE Fans, 8GB 256-Bit GDDR6, GV-N206SWF2OC-8GD Video Card ($399.99)

    Memory: G.SKILL TridentZ Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel Z370 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-32GTZKW ($137.99) \**PURCHASED**\**

    Power Supply: CORSAIR RMx Series RM650x 2018 CP-9020178-NA 650W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Power Supply ($119.98)

    CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 3600 6-Core 3.6 GHz (4.2 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W 100-100000031BOX Desktop Processor ($179.99)

So far the only component I've bought was the RAM since Newegg is running a great sale on it. Other than that, I'm waiting for either a decent sale on these items, or my birthday (requested Newegg gift cards to help offset the cost) which is in about a month. The one aspect of this build that I'm unsure about is the case. The PC is going to be in my main living room, not in a corner or anything. I have 2 large dogs who are both mild shedders, so plenty of hair and dandruff in the air. Couple that with the standard dust accumulation from a family living room and I feel like there's going to be a higher-than-average amount of particulates in and around the PC. I want to find a good, well built case that has high quality removable filters. Any other specifications that add to anti dust are a plus. I could care less about the flashy lights and RGB customization that is so prevalent nowadays so I'm not looking for anything specific for visuals. Any help or insight you can provide would be great! Thanks for giving this post a read.

TL:DR, I need options for a quality case meant for a high dust environment.

can lack of wattage affect performance?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:25 PM PST

hi all, I just recently assembled a pc ( r5 3600, rtx 2070, 16gb ddr4 3000mhz ram) and after running some benchmarks it's not reaching expected performance, mainly the ryzen 5. i have a really old power supply which is only running at 420w, could this be an explanation for lack of performance as it could possibly act as a throttle? thanks

Troubleshooting an overheating cpu. Computer is only 2 days old. Please help.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:31 PM PST

Last night my computer was running a program called handbrake and doing some encoding on GoPro videos, I noticed all my fans were running flat out, I was checking my temperatures, in the asus software i recorded the highest at 92 degrees C and saw it around 90 C a couple times. I freaked out and paused everything and then let it go down to 60 then as soon as I started it again it would flare up to 85 almost instantly. I have since learnt that this not hot enough for thermal throttling so shouldn't be any damage, but I'm very conscious of how hot it is for a 2 day old pc and would love to keep the temps under 75. I have taken the heatsink off and made sure there is well applied thermal paste which there is. I am not interested in overclocking so that's not an issue. What can I do now?

Is there a better way to monitor my temperatures?

Do I put my heatsink on the same way I did when I did the first time?

Is my ram too high and causing heating problems?

Have I got a dud cpu?

I had the side plate off temporarily is that a possible cause of high temperatures?

EDIT: Do I need to upgrade my CPU?

    Specs:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (with stock heatsink) MB - asus prime b450m-a Ram - Corsair vengeance 2x8 16gb 3200mhz set to run at 3200mhz Gpu: sapphire pulse rx 5500 xt 8gb Case: Deepcool mattrex 55 PSU: Corsair RM550X gold
