    Simple Questions - February 11, 2020

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Completed my new build a couple of weeks ago, just wanted to show it off. My All-Black Build! 2600X and 1660 Super

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 07:01 AM PST

Completed my first PC build in a long time (like 8 years) a couple of weeks ago. Forgot how much fun it can be to build a PC and am really happy with the way it came out. This sub and pcpartpicker make things soo much easier than what I remember it being like! Still lots of research, but it makes it so much easier to figure out compatibility!

Need help salvaging parts from my son’s new PC

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:16 AM PST

My first post here, so I hope it's okay as written. My son was on his way back to college yesterday when he hydroplaned off the road. He flipped end over end, and rolled twice. He's going to be okay. His first build, however, probably won't. It was thrown about 50 feet. He just finished it and brought it home to show me. We're hoping Microcenter will say some of it is salvageable. Any thoughts on how to recover and test any parts, or is he going to have to start over someday? https://imgur.com/2SUSLdM https://i.imgur.com/7M7cscc.jpg Bonus shot of the car https://imgur.com/N9vTg0v

I am in Australia and can get the Rx 580 4GB for $A200 brand new. Also is it worth it to get a Rx 580 used for the lower price point?

500gb sata ssd with 1tb hdd or 250gb m.2 ssd with 2tb hdd?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 07:43 AM PST

Right now, I have the choice to get either WD SN500 250GB paired with 2TB Barracuda or MX500 500GB and 1TB Barracuda. Mostly play AAA titles, which don't take crazy time to load and several multiplayer games like Rainbow Six Siege and Apex. Which combination should I chooss and why? Thanks for answering my question.

Building my first PC parts list. Here is my first draft of parts.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 03:59 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/WeWillBeLegend/saved/

Going for an ice blue, black, and white color scheme. Will also be ordering custom cables. Will also need to get a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Would be interested in recommendations for those three items and also for my parts list if there is something I could replace with another part that performs better, is cheaper, etc. Not interested in Micro Atx builds as of this time. Somewhat on a budget of around $2000 give or take but that is fairly flexible. This will primarily be used for gaming, but I'd possibly like it to be able to stream because I may start doing that in the future and would also like it to handle productivity fairly well.

Criticism needed for my first ever gaming pc for graphic heavy games and esports at 144Hz (1080p - 1440p)

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 03:07 AM PST

Hello, I'd love to build myself a gaming pc for the very first time with a €1500 budget, I'm from Belgium and continental EU based online shops are usually my go-to.

It'll be primarily for graphic-heavy games as well as esports at 1080p 144hz and I plan to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz monitor. It'll also be for Photoshop and Lightroom photo editing (not professional). I already own the peripherals as well as a 1tb 2"5 SSD (Samsung 860 QVO).

    Any thoughts about this build?

    ~$3,000 First Time Build - i9-9900 and 2080ti

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 03:36 PM PST

Hey it's my first time building a PC. I've been doing research for a couple months on what performance I would want and eventually it ended up focusing around a 2080ti.

Primarily want it for photo/video editing/excel for work but also for gaming at 1440p at 144fps and eventually 4k around 60fps.

My budget is around $3000 and I obviously want the best performance but I also wanted some non-essential aesthetic pieces (NZXT Z73 and power supply for instance). If there is anything on my list that could be optimized with this in mind that's mainly what I need help with, or if I could use a better "X" or getting "Y" is pointless and overkill for this build. i9-9900 vs Ryzen 9 3900x for example if one better suits my needs. Any cristicisms or suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks in advance for your help!

Gtx 1660 super or 2060 super?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 03:00 PM PST

I wanna start saying that this Is my first build and I'm going to use this Gpu with an ryzen 5 3600, 16 ram and a 144hz 1080p monitor, Im not a streamer or a pro player gamer, I'm going to play mostly first and third person shooter, I'm going to play a lot of hours a day and I just want a Gpu that last long and I can enjoy with no problems, so my question is it worth it for me spend 400€ for a 2060 super and maybe after a year upgrade my monitor or I should go with a 1660 super and invest the money in other things? Thanks for the answer.

    CPU Cooler

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 02:57 PM PST

Ok, so basically I got a cooler a while ago from an old Lenovo m92p Intel pc and because I was an idiot 2 years ago I thought that there was still thermal paste on it after wiping the thing with alcohol 3 times. Anyway, it's pretty scratched. They aren't super deep scratches but they're significant.

Can I still use it or should I get another cooler?

Edit: MUST I get a new cooler?

    My PC's been acting up.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 12:39 PM PST

For a while now, my PC's been acting badly. First, some basic specs:

CPU: Intel core 2 quad q9650

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 980

    Memory: 8 GB DDR2 800 MHz

recently, every time I leave the computer overnight, it will shut down. Now, I realize that you should shut it down overnight, but it has always been fine in the past. The issue that arises is that, whenever I come back in the morning and turn it on, I'll get the post screen, but it won't beep like it's supposed to. When this happens, all I can do is restart it again and hope for the best. Sometimes this will work, but others the front IO becomes unresponsive and I have to turn off the power supply, then restart around three more times to get it to beep, and actually turn on fully. And when it does turn on, for about ten minutes afterwards it will be incredibly slow.

    Any ideas?

My computer freezes at random times, mouse can move a little bit but it is like 1 frame every 3 sec. Sound still works but will eventually stop or lag.

Here is what the Windows 10 Event Viewer shows :

The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. I also have these that come after the nvlddmkm one :

Application Shadow.exe has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware.

Application archeage.exe has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware.

I did not figure out when and how this happens, it seems very random. Can happen 1 time a week or 3 times in a day.

I have tried a lot of thing, like using DDU to clean install drivers, passed memtest and other tests. I even changed my CGU as I thought it was the issue. Changed from 2070 SUPER to 2080. Nothing changed, had a crash 4h after the new CGU was installed. Did not notice high temps. Did not overclock anything

I also have a peripheral that keeps disconnecting/reconnecting. It's the Corsair Commander Pro. But it is a known issue, I don't think the two are linked.

This might be motherboard, PSU or something else, but I am fed up with changing my parts (3rd graphic card already).

I hope you will be able to help me, I am tired of these crashes.

    Thanks in advance !

Edit : Just disabled TDR with TDR Manipulator. Don't know how it will affect the issue.

Need help updating my 2012 desktop

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 10:56 AM PST

Hi! I purchased my desktop waaay back in 2012 when I was still a student, it was a mid-range gaming PC now which I haven't really touched since except for a modest GPU upgrade. I have actually shifted my gaming habits more towards retro systems hooked upto a CRT and a projector, so don't really need much gaming capabilities, as long as I can run the occasional game on medium or low settings I'm fine, I prefer to emulate anyway. I just want the PC to start-up fast and be snappy. Below are my specs taken from Speccy, with the planned upgrades and my requirements:

    • Operating System - **Update to Windows 10** Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
    • CPU - **Out of date I know, but pretty good, so I'll keep this** Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.40GHz 73 °C Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
    • RAM - **Update to faster DDR4, 2x sticks of 8GB** 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 631MHz (9-9-9-24)
    • Motherboard - **Update to something that supports M.2 SSDs, hopefully a smaller form factor** ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P8Z77-V LX (LGA1155) 22 °C
    • Graphics - **Out of date, but does what i need, so I'll keep this** ASUS VH242 (1920x1080@60Hz) 2048MB AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (ASUStek Computer Inc)
    • Hard Drives - **Old and slow - get 500GB M.2 for boot, use 1TB as storage** 186GB Western Digital WDC WD2000JS-00MHB0 ATA Device (SATA) 56 °C 932GB Seagate ST1000DL002-9TT153 ATA Device (SATA) 30 °C

The case on this thing is also a full size and very ugly. If I could get everything I want to keep into a smaller case then that would be great. Maybe a Micro-ATX case, with a mobo to match.\

I have these products in mind for some of the changes

    M.2 - Samsung MZ-V7E500BW 970 EVO 500 GB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD Black: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

    RAM - Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz UDIMM Memory Module - CT2K8G4DFS832A | Ebuyer.com

Any advice would be very helpful, thank you!

It has always been a dream of mine to build one and after doing my research by lurking in this sub and days of convincing my gf, I have chosen the parts below for my first ever build. P.S. - I'll be mostly playing AAA RPG games but will sometimes play FPS battleroyale.

P.S.S. - I'm in the Philippines so the parts i've chosen are the cheapest ones I can get from our market without breaking the bank.
