Linux antivirus and malware protection Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:10 AM PST Hello. I've fairly consistantly had issues running a full scan with Clamav and occasionally when running updates. I'm looking for av and antimalware software for Linux that I can update on the fly in the terminal or carry out a full scan. Any recommendations much appreciated. TIA K [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:50 AM PST Is there better laptops equipped to deal with Linux. I know you can toss a lightweight Linux distro on any laptop and there you go. But currently I have a surface book 2 and I want to eventually get into pentesting and programming. Not sure if this laptop itself is idea or would I be better off getting a different laptop to throw something like arch onto it. Specs for my laptop is. Mobile Linux: Open Source Phones, Freedom of Choice From Android/iOS Binary Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:01 AM PST While you're having fun delving into the world of Linux on your laptop or desktop computer, allow me to introduce you to Linux for mobile devices. Yes, this is a thing, and it's just about to get really exciting very soon. 2020 is the year for Mobile Linux! First, you should know that if you have an Android device, you can probably install an alternative operating system on it already. These are more or less forks of the open source base of Android called AOSP (Android Open Source Project). AOSP is the base operating system for all Android phones, but it's free and open source (FOSS). Device manufacturers typically fork this and then put all kinds of bloatware in it. To learn more about AOSP: https://www.androidcentral.com/aosp So which alternative Operating Systems are available? The most popular is probably LineageOS, but there are many others. Here's an overview: https://itsfoss.com/open-source-alternatives-android/ However, what's really exciting is that there are two projects just coming out that offer Linux on mobile. These are different, because they're not based on AOSP, but on regular old Linux, optimized for a different device. These two projects are the PinePhone and the Librem 5. There are enormous differences between the two devices. For one, the Librem 5 is about $700 (though they're saying the price will be increasing soon), and the PinePhone is $149. How does PinePhone sell so cheap? Well, it's basically not for profit: https://www.pine64.org/2019/08/19/its-time-to-start-giving-back/ TLDR: they make about $10 profit per phone, which they will donate to the Operating System that you choose at time of purchase - this OS will be installed on the phone when you receive it. See r/PINE64official. The Librem 5, which is made by Purism (see r/Purism) is a privacy focused phone. They're building both the hardware and the software from scratch. The Operating System is called PureOS. It's a fork of Debian featuring all FOSS software. It uses the Gnome desktop environment. To learn more about the Librem 5: https://developer.puri.sm/Librem5/ To purchase a Librem 5: https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/ While the PinePhone isn't self-consciously focused on privacy the way the Librem 5 is, it has all the same privacy features, including hardware kill switches - though they aren't on the outside of the phone, and you have to take off the back panel to get at them. If you're a privacy geek like me, and you care about bits and blobs and that sort of thing, and you've heard that PinePhone is a bit looser when it comes to blobs (as compared to the Librem 5), then please see the following post in which Pine64 basically says that that's not true: https://www.pine64.org/2020/01/24/setting-the-record-straight-pinephone-misconceptions/ The really exciting thing about the PinePhone (besides the incredible price) is how the Linux community is beginning to embrace it. It'll be eminently hackable and usable in all kinds of ways. Here's the Pine64 wiki page, which has a list of the top OSs and links to download the latest versions: https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PinePhone#Operating_Systems The interesting thing about PinePhone is that you'll be able to boot it up from a microSD card, just like you would boot up a laptop live from a USB. So yes, you'll be able to boot several different OSs live without installing, just by inserting a microSD card and rebooting the device. This has implications for Tails, Kali, etc. Not to mention being able to try an OS without committing to it. Here's a video about the potential possibilities of the PinePhone that totally blew my mind: https://invidio.us/watch?v=-7X0aa5XKjQ Basically, all the different uses for a Raspberry Pi can be applied to the PinePhone. Here are some examples:
Pine64 is also working on a case for the PinePhone that has an actual, tactile keyboard. They posted about it here: https://www.pine64.org/2019/12/05/december-update-thank-you-for-2019/ They said that they're taking their inspiration from the Psion Series 5 (Palm Pilot) pocket computer, which looks like this: https://www.petervis.com/modern-gadgets/psion-series-5/psion-series-5.html The possibilities are endless. As the above video points out, it's a lot of components all in one little form factor that if purchased separately, would probably cost at least twice as much, not to mention it'd be big and unwieldy. I'm dumbfounded that they're able to sell this thing so cheap. I kind of regret that I wasn't one of the 3,000 people who bought a Braveheart edition of the phone, some of whom have already received them, with the rest receiving them within about the next week or so. 2020 is the year of the Linux phone! Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:40 PM PST I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Raspberry Pi 4 using this image: After flashing the image on the SD card, I updated & upgraded everything. Now do I need to install ubuntu-desktop before installing & switching to a lighter kde-plasma-desktop? Used this command after I flashed the SD card: sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop Get errors like: If I try to startkde: display is not set or cannot connect to X server I've tried setting the DISPLAY & a number of other things. Right now I'm not sure if I need to install Ubuntu after flashing the card before I can install a desktop environment. Any help or assistance will really be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:29 AM PST I'm extremely new to Ubuntu, and I'm trying to get to use the 'Ubuntu OS' on my chromebook. I'm using xcfe, not Unity since my chromebook can not handle heavy software. I'm using crouton. I managed to get everything ready, and I ran the command enter-chroot and it said that I needed this to be a root. What does this mean and how do I do this? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:41 AM PST Trying to install CUDA on Clear linux, I get this error: I have 4 GB in tmp, I also ran it with --tempdir=<folder in home directory>, so I don't think it is really a space issue. I also compared the md5sum with the published one, so I don't think the file is corrupt. I assume I'm probably missing some obvious detail... Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:09 AM PST Hi, I have a repo that is important, and I wanted it to be archived in the Github arctic vault archive that is going to take a snapshot of all public repos in like a couple hours from now. I have two repos with almost the same info. One of them has a few stars, but I made it private, and the other one is public but currently has no stars. Github published an FAQ for what repos will be archived, it's in the very first section, but it's not entirely clear. The criteria are either
So which one of them is it. Should I just leave my public repo with no stars but with a lot of commits recently or should I make the private repo with stars public just in case? It has info that I think would be important, or at least interesting in case anyone discovers it, and I want to make sure it gets archived. Sorry if this is not very on the topic of Linux, I just had very little time left and I needed to ask for advice someplace. thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Discord doesn't see my mic on i3, neither do other programs that would use it. (Manjaro/i3) Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:57 AM PST Hi, I've run into a problem using my headset's microphone on my Manjaro install. When I was using XFCe with the distro, it was just detected automatically. However since I reinstalled the distro with i3, my microphone isn't being sensed. Is there a solution to this? Thx for the help in advance! [link] [comments] |
Make live USB from 2 partition USB drive Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:51 AM PST Hey guys, I have a 32GB flashdrive that I am using as a live usb running Zorin OS 15.1 on an old computer while I wait to buy a new laptop for myself. I would like to use the remaining of the 32gb flashdrive as storage, since only roughly 2 gb is used by the zorin iso file, and the rest is just wasted :/ I have tried to create an NTFS partition for storage and another FAT32 for the live boot files and running a dd command to make a bootable drive, but that resulted in a non working live usb (black screens); even after modifying the iso with the --partok flag with isohybrid. I've also tried using mkusb, but I only see options to create a persistent "casper-rw" drive, which is NOT what I am looking for. I have read in the help pages online that mkusb can create NTFS "usbdata" partitions, but I was unable to create a solely storage partition without Casper persistent storage. Other programs like balenaetcher, rufus, etc - to the best of my knowledge - don't support making a live usb on a two partition USB drive, and instead just make a live usb of the entire 32gb flash drive. Any ideas as to how I can get this done? [link] [comments] |

Few questions about how to switch over to linux as a gamer. Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:30 AM PST Hello r/LinuxForNoobs i have a few questions about switching over to Linux from Windows. Specs: i7 9700k 32Gb of 3200 MHz Corsair Vengeance Rgb Pro RTX 2080 (non super) (non ti) Asus ROG Maximus Hero XI Windows 10 pro I want to "switch" to Majaro Linux. My main question is about games and how Linux and Windows are going to fight with each other, let me give an example: i'm playing Gta V on linux and it works fine now i'm going to go to Windows to do something like Forza but then i want to play Gta again, do i need to switch to Linux again or will it work on the same install? TL;DR: Do i need to install some games twice? My second question is about: "dual booting", i still need Windows for a few things like i've said before so the way i think i'm going to do it is cutting up my ssd in to different partitions so that Linux and Windows aren't in the same drive and won't kill each other. I have an Asus ROG Maximus Hero XI which is a high end motherboard or so i've been told, so does that mean that i can like dual boot from Linux to Windows and back with the press of a button? TL;DR: How does dual booting on an Asus motherboard work? Now i'm going to get in to specifics e.g. certain programs and stuff. So let's get the cringy stuff out of the way first, Minecraft. I have to questions about the big MC, my first question is about Java: Do i need to install Java to play? my second question is about servers, i have a local server that i play on with friends it has plugins and a lot of work has gone into it so how can i make that run on Linux? TL;DR: minecraft on Linux My last question is about a few programs. Program 1: Wallapaper Engine i know it's not on Linux but is there a Linux counterpart? Program 2: Virusscanners, i have Malwarebytes on Windows which again isn't on Linux, do i even need a scanner on Linux and if i do which one? If you need any information i will be glad to help!
