Just to prove my point, my newly purchased (cheap because circumstance) Lenovo Ideapad deleted my entire post when I had merely brushed the trackpad

This thing is a piece of shit. I can't watch Amazon Prime video or Netflix because it stutters the whole way through. I can't click on anything without the whole brrrring Want to print/share etc etc this menu appearing.... no, it is just a button, there is nothing to print, I just want to do what it says... I click on Use This Address, I get do I Want to Print/Share blah blah… I have more than two pages open and it's 5 entire years until one of the two actually opens.. Most of the time it needs one specific bird of paradise's mating dance to perform a specific ritual before it does what my work laptop just does as would be expected. My poorly MacBook which I damn well will be getting fixed as soon as I can afford it, performs like a normal human being on the same internet all of the time. This thing performs like a wet cardboard box on moving day. Wtf is wrong with it? Surely Netflix is a basic performance standard of all laptops these days? It is literally unwatchable.

What cheaper ThinkPad should I get for basic use?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:15 PM PST

So I have had gaming laptops for a while now, and I really realized I dont need a laptop. I am getting rid of my current ASUS Tuf laptop because I just dont really use it for anything I can already use my desktop for and at school its just an excuse to not do homework or study.

However, I can justify a simple/rugged laptop for my "electronics lab" at work. What would r/ laptops recommend? (300-400)

Or if someone has a solution for my specific desk/room setup that would be great! (just send a dm rather than comments). I have two desks and one is basically used up for my "gaming setup" and a smaller desk next to my bedroom door. I have two monitors, so ideally I can scrap having a laptop altogether, however, it does not seem very practical because of keyboard/mouse usage and what not.

What is the estimated resale value (US) of my XPS 15?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 02:52 PM PST

I have a Dell XPS 15 that was manufactured in 2017 that I'm considering selling. It's been a great laptop, but I think it's probably time for an upgrade.

    The specs are:

    • I7-7700HQ @ 2.80GHz
    • 16gb RAM
    • 512 gb SSD
    • GTX 1050 (full GPU as far as I can tell, not a mobile kind)
    • 4K/Touch

It had some repairs (a motherboard and SSD swap at least) done by dell a couple of years ago, but hasn't had any problems since.

Not 100% sure if i'm selling it yet, but I was wondering if anyone out there can give me a good estimate that I can expect to get for it. Online I've found everything from $400 to $1,200 as the selling points, but I'm smart enough to know that it's probably not either one of those realistically.

When will 8GB of ram stop being enough for basic use?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:10 AM PST

I'm talking just standard chrome with like 10-15 tabs max (usually less), word, excel, spotify etc. Not gaming or anything like that.

MSI GF65 vs Acer Predator? Both with i7-9750H, GTX 1660 Ti, 16 GB RAM.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 01:40 PM PST

I just want to get some feedback to see what other people would prefer.

I can get the MSI for $150 cheaper. But I'd probably also end up buying a USB Type A to USB Type C cord for my cooling pad, another USB Flash Drive so I can transfer my SD Card data and use USB Flash Drive instead, and a Bluetooth mouse so I won't have to use a USB one. So in the end, more like $100 cheaper.

MSI has six cooling pipes and I saw at least one person say it runs cooler than the Acer Predator.

Acer Predator is much more gorgeous looking. I never liked the black and red color theme.

Acer Predator keyboard looks much better. FN key to the left of the space bar, instead of to the right. All keys are marked prettier and easier to understand.

Acer Predator has a ton of really bad reviews about how computer wouldn't turn on the very first day or quit turning on three days later. Just black screens. Other severe problems. I never trusted MSI, but I see less of those kinds of reviews on the GF65.

Familiarity. I've had 4-5 Acer models so far. Never owned a MSI.

MSI might understand gamers better. I downloaded MSI Afterburner for the first time a week ago, and it's an awesome program. Helps me see what is throttling or what runs hot.

One thing for sure is I need a good screen. I tried a Dell G3 with a 1060 Max Q GPU, and the screen was complete crap. Everything was way too dark on the brightest settings. The colors were god awful and I just felt complete anger, hatred, and disgust on any game I played because it looked so freaking bad. I don't want to get a MSI and find out that the screen is similar to the Dell G3.

What is the best way to sell a laptop?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I purchased a Dell XPS 13 laptop last August for college. It is the 9380 I believe with an 8th gen i7, 8 gb of ram, 256 ssd, etc. Needless to say, it is quite a good computer and will be for a while. For unimportant reasons, I am planning on selling this laptop and purchasing a MacBook Pro instead. I was curious if you guys have experience with selling laptops and know the best way to get the most money for it.

Thank you all, have a good one

    HP Omen laptop - 4k @ 60hz or 1080 @ 144hz?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:32 AM PST

I'm buying a gaming laptop and I'm deciding on these two displays, 4k @ 60hz or 1080 @ 144hz. The types of games I play are typically RTS such as age of empires II DE, III, and soon IV, Anno 1800 etc. I've heard for these types that refresh rate isn't a big deal and 4k is much better, but then again I see anything under 144hz is unplayable. Also I will be hooking it up via HDMI to a 36" 4k monitor so I will be able to actually experience the 4k. Graphics card is RTX 2070. Thanks all.

Graphic Card for Gaming on Fujitsu Workstation Celsius H720

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:21 AM PST

I know it's not ideal but I am gaming on my workstation.

Nonetheless I can run games like the Witcher 3, Total War Three Kingdoms, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Cities Skylanes and other somewhat demanding games on low to medium settings (however on relativley low FPS, which doesnt bother me as I am used to it).

Still with Mount and Blade Bannerlord and Crusader King 3 coming out and in general too I'd like some better graphics. (Though I probably dont need a good graphics Card for CK3).

As my laptop probably doesnt have the greatest specs I assumed that a high end graphics card would be overkill - hence me coming here.

Here are my specs, please tell me if I forgot something:

    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2601 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB

Graphic Cards: Intel R HD Graphics 4000

    NVIDIA QUADRO K2000M

(So you know what I am working with currently, I guess only the second grahic card is relevant?)

Not sure how to show power supply, is it Voltage? HWMonitor shows 11.1 Voltage, though the laptop wasn't plugged in, not sure if that is relevant.

Laptop with higher Hz rate than my external monitor

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 11:19 AM PST

    Hello,

I recently bought a new laptop that has an 144hz monitor. Before, I used a 60hz laptop and connected it to a 60hz external monitor. If I connect my new laptop to the my external monitor as my main screen, would that be a waste? Would the monitor just be capped at 60hz?

What should I do to take care of my 10 year old laptop?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:32 AM PST

Hello! So I have a 10 year old Acer Aspire which I love. I don't want to replace it... It runs pretty smoothly (most of the time), the music sounds amazing and I have lots of important things stored on it. I've seen newer laptops run worse than it, get dead pixel lines on their display, but the only issue my laptop has is that when it gets shaken/hit it either reboots or gets a bluesceeen. I believe it's because of the HDD, but I'm not sure.

I've taken care of it on the software side, but I can't say the same about the hardware. I've never cleaned it, so I guess there is a lot of dust and gunk inside of it. Today I noticed my cooler making a slight grinding sound, it's not bad but I'm afraid there's too much dirt in it.

I was thinking of giving it to a service to clean it, because I am clumsy so I wouldn't trust myself with this task. They can do that, right? Also, should I replace my HDD? Is it dangerous to keep using it, aka is it possible for it to die and lose all data? I'd rather buy some RAM than a new HDD to be honest.

Any other advice? Thanks in advance ❤️

    Can Use Some Knowledgeable Opinions

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:10 AM PST

I've received a $2500CAN (they officially gave me $2,300) grant for school and I'm putting it towards a new laptop, gaming laptop to be specific

I like the specs, build quality and low-key design on the Razer blade 15 but I want to test and compare everything before making a decision, that's where you guys could help!

Budget: $2300 Canadian Uses: University, gaming, and some video editing (my GoPro) Specs wishlist: - Intel i7 (H line) processor - 144hz refresh rate if possible - not one of those flashy gaming laptops (no over the top design or tons rgb lights) - good battery life - no 4k (feels like a waste of money 1080 full HD sounds pretty good to me lol) - Not super thick

Might be a long list but I'm having a tough time trying to find laptops with good specs for my price. I guess I'm not the greatest at the research aspect of this. I need to compile a couple comparisons because my Dad loves apple and thinks he knows everything tech but he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. It's like talking to a brick wall. Thank you for any help!
