Study / work laptop. What to pick?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 11:53 AM PST

Hey guys. I'm going to study this summer, and the school sent out requirements for laptops, and the programs they are using are not supported by MacBook ( sadly I got one)

So I am in search of a new laptop . The requirements for the laptop stated by the school is as following; Cpu: i5 3320m 3.3 GHz or better Ram: min. 8gb Screen resolution: 1920 x 1080 (guessing all laptops are equipped with better)

I've been searching a bit and keeping an eye out. But I must admit I am not a tech guy anymore.

I like the flip computers with touch display but are they any good?

And are the difference between i5 and i7 huge? Don't mind throwing in the extra cash for the i7 if it's worth it.

Searching for something not to heavy and thick, since I'm going to be carrying it with me in the back everyday

. But still something fast / strong which doesn't just barely live up to the min. Requirements.

    What would you guys suggest?

Should I return my laptop? Audio and other issues

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 11:53 AM PST

    Hey,

So I just bought a Dell XPS 15 9570 off of eBay for about a grand. It's last years model with the 1080p display. I really love this computer, and plan to use it mostly for basic video editing. However, I'm having a few issues with it.

When I first started using it, I noticed the fan was going off and fast/loud a bit too much, especially after opening Premiere (with no use). This issue seemed to get mostly better after a BIOS update though.

Then I noticed the issue I'm having now. The speakers make a buzzing noise when the volume is too high. And also, I get a click/light pop every so often when there's continuous sound playing. It's really annoying.

I looked up the issue and tried reinstalling the Realtek drivers, alternate modded drivers, etc and the buzzing is still happening along with the popping.

I feel like it's a hardware issue, because it sounds like the speakers are almost rattling inside the case. I looked it up and found out that a rubber washer could be loose, but I don't feel like opening this thing up.

Any suggestions? This is really frustrating, and I'm considering returning it to eBay. I just don't want to be without an editing laptop for too long, as I need it for projects and stuff.

I should mention that I also contacted the seller and he says that no other work has been done on it.

    Thanks in advance.

So I DON'T want a "gaming laptop" but I do want a laptop that'll play some pretty basic games, such as the old C&C games, Theme Hospital, Rollercoaster Tycoon that sort of thing. What type of "integrated" card is okay for that?

Will more CPU power take a load off the RAM?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:00 AM PST

I know CPU and RAM have a different jobs.

However, my laptop has a low power Intel core m3 CPU and 8 GB of RAM.

The laptop frequently runs slow, with Windows task manager saying CPU is at 99% while RAM is at about 80 to 90%.

Although sometimes the CPU can be at about 60 percent and RAM at 90 percent.

I want to get a new laptop but can't afford one with more than 8GB or RAM as going for 16GB seems to double the price!

So I will probably get an i5 or i7 with 8 GB of RAM.

Do you think the more powerful CPU will solve my slowdown problems?

Or do my current tasks require more than 8GB of RAM, based on Windows task manager reporting usage of about 80 to 90 percent when it runs slow?

Would a faster CPU somehow free up some of the RAM resources?

    Thanks

Remove charge rate limit on laptop

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 11:08 AM PST

Title. Laptop is a Lenovo Yoga c940 UHD 14', and it has been capped at a 15,000 mW charge rate regardless if the charger is 65 watt or 90 watt (USB-C). This was probably done by Lenovo to make sure fans don't spin up all the time when charging, but at a better charge rate that doesn't take about 3 hours to fully charge this thing from 0%, removing that charging rate limit would be very welcomed. Anyone know how this can be done? Thanks

Do I have any hope for my laptop?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:47 AM PST

Okay so a few hours ago I was drinking some water and I was about to open the bottle when it burst open, water went on the screen and keyboard (everywhere basically) and I had no clue what to do and didn't think to search up what to do so I left it on, turned it upside down and dried it with a cloth, it's working fine and I continue to use it. I thought I'd only be gone for a couple of mins but I was gone around an hour and left it on, when I come back to the laptop the keyboard is completely ruined, there's no signs of water damage but id have to open up the laptop to check, anyway I can't even get into my laptop anymore as some keys aren't working and some keys are just doing random things e.g when I press a, AZ types and the same sort of thing for others plus when I press my space bar, a space and than V presses After 15 mins of research I shut down my laptop and flipped it upside down (in case there's a chance I can salvage it) Did I completely ruin it? (Sorry I'm really bad with technology don't judge me)

Is there a way to check my machine's specs online?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:17 AM PST

By using its serial code or something, is there a way to find out what my laptop is supposed to have for specs?

cause i could be wrong but on the date of purchase i remember that the specs said (64GB RAM),

but checking the system info today i saw that it only has 32GB RAM...

is there anyway to check this?

My new laptop has a USB-C port. What uses USB-C?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:06 AM PST

Recently bought an Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1, and one of it's selling points is its "Multi-function" USB-C port. That played no part of why I bought it (it was on sale and it was leagues better than my old Lenovo ideapad 320), but now I have it, what do I use that port for?

Asus laptop N580VD cannot boot after fan clean

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:22 AM PST

Asus laptop N580VD cannot boot after fan clean

    Short Story:

    1. I unplugged the charge cable and internal battery to clean up the fan
    2. The computer did not boot no matter what power source I used, but the Power indicator would come light up.
    3. I followed the instruction of Solution #1 on https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1014276/
    4. Things didn't work.
    5. Now the laptop has battery in and power cable plugged.
    6. Pressing the power button will light up the Power indicator, but the laptop doesn't turn on.

Q: Now the laptop stays on event 20 under the Full Story. No clue what to do before sending in to a service center... Does anyone have any tips on dealing with this kind of troubles when carrying out simple maintenance?

I saw discussion threads where some suggest that the cause could be 1)fried motherboard, 2)bad contact of cables, 3)remove the silver stickers for normal boot-up etc. Given the fact that the first time it magically came back on, it appears to me that it is unlikely that serious problem caused the failure on the second time of maintenance (i.e. Full Story - Part B). Much appreciated if anyone have any experience with this laptop model. Thank you very much.

LED indicators - Battery Charge Indicator

    LED indicators - Power Indicator

    Fact summary:

    1. Power cable and batter plugged. Press the power button will light up the power indicator. Hold down power button will turn it off. Once released the power button, the power indicator back on.
    2. Plugging the AC power in (battery is in), the Battery charge indicator is neither orange or greed, but milky white. Power indicator does not light up.

    Full Story - Part A (1st maintenance):

    1. Power off the machine
    2. Unplug the charger
    3. Open the cover
    4. Remove the battery
    5. Clean the fan with plastic tool and air pump
    6. Re-install the battery
    7. Screw back the back cover
    8. Turn on the laptop with battery only.
    9. The laptop did not turn on. The two LEDs - (1) Battery charge indicator and (2) Power indicator did not light up.
    10. Follow the instruction in Solution #1 on Asus support website: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1014276/
    11. Still didn't work. The laptop could not be boot up.
    12. Decided to remove the motherboard battery for a BIOS reset as suggested on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL97XhontSo
    13. Couldn't fully take out the motherboard because there are structures on the laptop case body that hold the motherboard stuck to the case. I gave up on step 12 - BIOS reset was not done.
    14. Screw the parts back and battery in and left for dinner. The laptop is off.
    15. Coming back from dinner, the battery area of the back cover is hot and I realized the laptop is on, staying at the BIOS summary screen.
    16. The laptop was back to life.
      Full Story - Part B (2nd maintenance):

    17. The next day, I found out the fan was noisier than before.

    18. I decided to repeat event 1 to 8 to check what's wrong with the fan.

    19. Event 9 to 11 happened.

    20. Removed the RAMS, HDD, battery, then hold down power button for 30 secs 1)with charge cable and 2) without charge cable, put things back together. The laptop still doesn't boot up

    21. Now the battery is in and the charge cable is plugged. Pressing the power button will light up the Power indicator, but nothing else happened. If only battery is in, the two indicators will not light up.

P.S.I did not 'discharge' the laptop as professionally as done at 1:00 of this video - this guy repaste the CPU coolant and the laptop reboot beautifully. Hope that was my case:
