Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:12 PM PST After reading the buying guide here, it seems as though Ubiquiti is a favorite brand. I searched and found the Dream Machine, which has several favorable reviews on several (seemingly) independent sites. First question is whether or not you have thoughts on this model. Second, my house is not set up for me to wire access points, so I am considering MoCA for the TVs to alleviate some of the strain on the bandwidth for other devices. I did not see any MoCA devices on Ubiquiti's web site, so I would love some recommendations. Finally, as you might be able to tell, I am at level zero with home networking. I see the posts in this sub, and try to Google what some of you are talking about, but this leads me down another rabbit hole. I would love to be able to tinker with the settings on whichever router I settle on, and not just plug it in and go. Any thoughts on YouTube channels or web sites for someone with a limited knowledge, but strong desire to learn more? TIA. [link] [comments] |
Creating a VPN/VLAN for purposes of streaming from another country Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:36 AM PST I live in the US. My wife is Japanese and would like to be able to stream Japanese shows for herself and more importantly for my son to help him with learning Japanese. She has parents willing to host a VPN device, but I don't want them to have to keep a computer on that they normally don't so I was thinking a small network device or raspberry pi. I would theoretically segment my network at home to provide a separate "japanese" network, possibly via a separate router with VPN capabilities and connect rokus or whatnot to it thst she wants to use off of her parents' network, but that would be down the line once I get the network established. Is there a good option for this? I have some networking knowhow and can follow instructions, her dad could physically hook something up but I'd most likely configure it and mail it to them. Their network has 100 down/100 up which I've tested myself last time I visited. I have 200 down so I think it should suffice for this purpose. [link] [comments] |

Help with Networking a Bungalow! Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:51 PM PST Hey r/HomeNetworking! I'm looking for help with a networking setup to provide a stable and reliable wireless connection for an approx. 1300 sq ft bungalow. My placement for the ISP modem on the main floor is limited to near the front of the house, but I do have a CAT6 running in the basement near the rear of the house that I assume can provide wireless AP functionality over PoE. I'm hoping to have the ISP modem provide wireless for the entire house, but if the wireless reaching the back of the house is insufficient (the basement has concrete walls), I'll set up the AP downstairs to provide wireless for the back of the house's main and basement floor. Do you guys have any suggestions on value for money hardware that would be appropriate for this situation? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
[Issue] My XFinity gateway has a public IP address for the internal network. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:19 AM PST Hi all, For background, I had an issue with the Xfinity Gateway that caused me to do a hard reset on it, and now it currently has a public IP for the internal LAN 74.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx. Before the reset, I had this AP/gateway set to bridge mode because I used my Netgear router as the main hub for my home network and didn't want any double NAT issues. Well the internet went down and after doing a lot of troubleshooting I found that the Netgear router was fine but the Xfinity gateway was having issues. Even when directly wired into the Xfinity gateway I could get no IP address or connect to the AP's web portal. I proceeded to do a hard factory reset on the gateway by pressing the reset button. Now the SSID is only showing "XFINITY" and when I directly connect to it and run ipconfig it shows my gateway as a public IP starting in 74 and gives the laptop a DHCP lease within that subnet. This is seriously the strangest thing I've ever seen as I've never had a home LAN have public IP leases before. If there is any info on how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:01 PM PST If "A" and "B" are connected over the internet via VPN, can "B" use this connection to ssh into "A"? A's traffic is going through B, does that mean A's services such as sshd are exposed to B? [link] [comments] |
Looking to extend LAN connection Posted: 01 Feb 2020 08:03 PM PST As title says, I am looking to extend a wired connection in my home. I bought longer cat6 cables so that I could run them through my attic from my living room to my den, but there is only a few feet of play left in the cables. These are 100ft cables, so there is not really a choice to get longer cables and run those instead. I am wondering if it would be possible to get a second router, plug it in to the main router, using the cables that are run, and plug my ps4/pc/whatever into the second router. The only other device that will be plugged into the main router would be my tv, so there should be no issues with overloading, but I don't want to suffer with drops in connection. I have also in the past used powerline adapters, but in my new home they are not working as well as they used to. So, will this router to router connection work for my issue? Thanks in advance. New to the game! Simple help setting up home WiFi. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:32 PM PST Hello everyone! I have a Linksys AC1200+ router and a Arris SB6183 modem. It has a 2.4 and a 5 channel. I have a 2000 sq foot house and where the cable company dropped the line is at the far end of the house with the bedrooms. The TV and my XBox are on the other side with the living room. Where the trouble is that obviously sometimes we have trouble with signal sometimes. I've shifted my Xbox over to the 5G signal and the Amazon fire stick is on the 2.4 signal, trying not to overburden anything. How can I make the signal better? Signal booster? Re-drop the cable? Anything helps. I'm a rookie at this and trying to read the beginners setup is almost Chinese. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:15 PM PST I was cleaning up some cabling in my patch when I noticed my internet was offline. I assumed I'd popped a wire that needed punched back down so I got my fluke to check the line coming from my Verizon ONT. The fluke said pairs 1/2 & 3/6 were reversed. All my stuff is is punched/terminated to T-568B but this says the other end of the cable is T-568A. I visually inspect the cable and it's A. Apparently the Verizon tech terminated it that way. I re-terminated and everything lit back up. The thing is, my internet has been working for over 2 years wired this way. I don't see how this is possible. [link] [comments] |

[Issue] Cannot figure out how to get faster speeds on Archer C2300. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:32 AM PST Hi folks -- I pay for a 400 mbps plan of which I receive consistently around 80 mbps. I use Spectrum, have had a tech out, and have confirmed that Spectrum is successfully sending my modem over the 400 mbps. I also have a brand new router -- the tp-link archer c2300. I've swapped out ethernet cables, tried different locations for the router, etc. I cannot figure out the issue -- why I'm getting only a fraction of the available speed. This is across several devices too -- two laptops, etc. Can anyone point me in the direction of how to fix this? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Hooking up TP Link Deco 5 to a Modemless Network Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:05 PM PST Hey All, I'm void of any knowledge when it comes to modemless networks so I'm hoping to get some information. I currently have a cable modem with my Deco 5. Quite simple to install, plug one of the Deco 5 discs into the modem and place the others where needed. Two questions I have. How do I hook up the Deco if there is no modem? Second question, if I plug one of the Deco 5 discs into my desktop, will that supply it with internet? The modemless network is a fibre network and uses the phone jack, which isn't close to my PC and my PC doesn't have wifi, so I'm hoping this will work. Any assistance would be appreciated, thank you. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:57 PM PST Hey guys! Our new house is almost finished and I am starting to put the pieces together for the network closet. I have 2 lines of cat6 run to each room as well as 2 access points and cameras. I am trying to decide which rack to buy. I'm thinking either 12u or 15u. Help me choose a Netgear router Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:33 PM PST So after extensive research I came down to 2 router models. The NetGear R8000P and the RAX120. I am upgrading from R7000. On one side, the R8000P has 3500 sqft coverage but I am a little bit skeptical on paying $225 on an oldish router that was released 4 years ago. Its actually updated from a 2014 model. I am not sure if I will "feel" the difference over the R7000. On the other side we have RAX120 which covers 3500 sqft with the unready Wifi6 and guessing newer software but at the outstanding price of $500! I do not think the RAX120 will give me $225 difference in benefit over the R8000P. I almost have no Wifi6 client but if buying a new router I might as well be future proof. What do you think? RAX120 too expensive? R8000P is not worth it and won't see a difference over the R7000? If someone knows where I can get refurbished R8000P that would be great as I can justify the price even further. [link] [comments] |
Can I put a mac-formatted hard drive on my Linksys router? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:38 PM PST I am trying to set up a home LAN storage drive using a Mac-formatted hard drive connected by USB to a Linksys AC1900 router. Using the Linksys portal for setup, I can see the hard drive, but I can't access the folders or files on it. Is this because of the Mac format? Do I need to start by reformatting the drive? Linksys recommends NTFS or Fat32 but these are both Windows formats. Any advice would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How to connect router to school Internet with access to the blocked ports Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:15 PM PST My school has a small Linux server but if we connect it to the internet by connecting the router the server is connected to on the access point , we aren't able to host or run many applications, since my district blocks all the good ports. Is there any way to use a VPN or hide the server under a domain to get it online on the server with access to the blocked ports? By the way our school uses Cisco and a system of access points throughout the school. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:05 PM PST I've been working on this device mount board for several years. My buddy actually gave me the desk and he made the board with all the peg-board style holes. I use cheap harbor freight zip ties to attach everything. It's not beautiful, but it definitely reduces the clutter. Let me know what you think! :D [link] [comments] |
Cable modem keeps going in and out Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:59 PM PST So this is getting really frustrating. We have had Spectrum since around November of last year and everything was working fine. Then for some reason around the beginning of this year everything has just stopped working. We've had three technicians come out so far, the first one decided we weren't getting enough signal coming in so he ran a new line from their box outside to the house. Second guy couldn't really figure anything out, but swapped out the modems hoping that would fix something. Third guy, I guess you could call him like a next level technician, came out and according to him everything was good on their end and that it could possibly be the wireless router causing the outages. The weird part about it is, at night and in the morning everything seems to work okay. But then around 10-11am it starts cutting in and out again. Sometimes it's a real quick blip while streaming but during other times, like today, it hasn't worked since about 11am. I had a thought they were throttling or something, but I don't know if they can even do that or not. I don't really want to call them again, third technician said they might start charging us for coming out. I don't mind going with their wireless router or even going with my own modem if it will fix everything but just want to make sure there isn't anything else I can do before that. Am I the crazy one for thinking that it's on them, can the wireless router really mess with the cable modem? Any suggestions are much appreciated. The wireless router is a Linksys MR8300 and the modem is an Ubee E31U2V1. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to isolated WiFi network? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:03 PM PST I have ALS, so I am interested in using WiFi controlled outlets for lamps, etc. One example I found on Amazon is: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071LLWLLP I would like to know if I could set up a 2nd WiFi router in my home that is NOT connected to my main home network (wired and wireless). My main network is configured for 192.168.1.xxx addresses. I would configure the second network as 192.168.10.xxx for example. Would my laptop be able to connect to both networks at the same time? My first network is on 5GHz, second would be 2.4GHz. Or would I have to switch between networks on my laptop when I want control outlets? Or could I use an old PC as a 'bridge' of sorts from my main network to the secondary network? I'm trying to avoid using the 'required' app on my phone since these apps seem to require absurd permissions, and frankly I don't trust apps nor the hardware to not send data back to overseas locations. I figure I would write some Python scripts to control them. Any ideas, suggestions, tutorials, etc is greatly appreciated. Because of my ALS, hardware hacking is out for me. I can barely type with my one working finger, so soldering, taking apart, etc is not possible for me. Many thanks [link] [comments] |
Moving, getting gigabit fiber, need to retire my old router, kindly need help choosing a new one. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:58 PM PST I will move into my new house in 2 weeks, and in the process of getting the latest and greatest our ISP can provide. DIGI1000 FTTH gigabit package. Looking to retire my older WR841n in the process. Since i had 0 issues with brand so far, was looking at the current generation of TP-Link routers. So far i have looked at many of the Archer series ranging all the current and still available but discontinued ones. But kinda settled down on these models: Archer C7 AC1750 Archer C9 AC1900 Archer A7 AC1750 Archer A9 AC1900 As far as i could do my google magic, the A series are newer than the C ones, but are they "better" ? I read somewhere saying the A series have worse components, somewhere they say the A series are way better in terms of CPU and stuff, so i really cannot decide and there are not many reviews of these comparisons. The A9 AC1900 would be my price limit, not that money is an issue, but really not want to fork out more if they get the job done. The router will have to work things out with my gaming pc on cable, my wifes laptop on wifi, my 4k smart TV on i guess wifi?, 3 phones and a tablet. Maybe with a few other phones when we have a party and play games like kahoot and the likes. So usually 5 wifi devices and the pc. The house setup is a 68 sqm brick apartment where the router would be almost in the centre of the blueprint and it is a similar but bigger setup of my current apartment and my old router did a good job supporting that so i guess anything newer or "bigger" would do the job. PS: people on the hungarian forums pointed me to the Asus ac65p for less than the A9 AC1900, and the same specs. I dont dislike Asus, but i am trying tonstay with the brand i know, but not stubborn to stay with them if i can get the same quality or better for the same price or lower. I appreciate any insight or comment. Edit: fixing typos, adding more info, on mobile atm [link] [comments] |
[Issue]Arris TG1882G Gateway still showing old Wifi Networks after enabling bridge mode Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:56 PM PST I recently purchased and finished setting up my Nighthawk Rs7800 and am able to connect to it successfully, however realized that my old wifi network (from my previous Spectrum provided gateway) is still showing up in the list of networks, even though the gateway itself is set to bridge mode. Would anyone know how I can access this gateway again now that it is in bridge mode or how to remove the old network from showing up? [link] [comments] |
Phone to cable adapter? I bought the wrong thing. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:53 PM PST So I was changing out my ISP router/modem for my own so that I can run a home media server. Unfortuntately, after purchasing this ( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/arris-surfboard-32-x-8-docsis-3-0-cable-modem-white/4600801.p?skuId=4600801 ) cable modem, I got home and realized it was the wrong thing. I get my internet through a phone jack, not through cable. Is there any chance I can just buy an adapter from the phone jack to the modem, or do I have to return it and get a different model? I realize this is a stupid question, but it was the cheapest thing there, and I'm not sure if I can still return it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:14 PM PST After about 8 years of living with 24Mbps Uverse a new awesome 1Gbps fixed wireless service (LitWaveX Air Fiber) is launching in my neighborhood. I work from home and do a lot of devops work so wanting to get the max speed for some large ftp transfers to AWS and of course video steaming and online gaming. Right now I'm running mesh network 3 google wifi's (old one not the new one), which is good enough for my current speeds. But my office is in the basement and the internet comes in upstairs. The backhaul on the google wifi is only like 130Mbps. So I'll see an improvement with upgraded internet but I'll get nothing near the 1GB speed on my desktop. I also have 3 other computers and a Smart TV down here in the basement that I'd like to get better speed on. All devices have 1gb ethernet but I'm not able to run cables because my landlord refuses to let me even though I'd pay to get it done professionally. So my goal is to get as close to 1Gbps from internet to desktop and as much as possible to the other devices in the basement. What does the internet hivemind suggest for doing this without wires. I was thinking some sort of wifi 6 mesh with a dedicated backhual, with wired out to the desktop and maybe one on the other side of the basement wired into the TV. But that seems kinda expensive for what will essentially be a wireless bridge. Are there good wifi6 bridges? I also was looking at powerline adapters but I doubt I'd get anything near the 1 Gbps with that. I got an 802.11AC (wifi 5?) card in my desktop, and I'm not opposed to swapping that out for a wifi 6 card, and my laptop is wifi 6 already, AC speeds on the TV and other computers would be acceptable. My other concern is that a single wifi 6 ap upstairs wouldn't have very good throughput to the basement but AC was acceptable before we went mesh. So folks, how would you do this if you wanted max throughput to a computer without running wires? Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Upload speed issue. Please help! Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:39 PM PST I have recently discovered that when uploading files, my upload speed is incredibly slow. I pay my ISP for unthrottled and unshaped 100/100. When running speed tests I get these results, as well as when downloading files I'll get my full line speed. Why is my upload only slowing down when uploading to a server? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:51 AM PST Would it be effective to put an AP in the attic above three rooms and a hallway that all need better WiFi? There is a drywall ceiling + 18" of blown-in insulation. I'm wondering if this would be more effective than putting the AP in the hallway and also keep it out of sight. [link] [comments] |
