Dumping R9000 for a quality router vs DD-WRT. Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:14 AM PST In 2018 I bought the R9000 mostly for plex and 5Ghz along with the EX8000 extender. All worked swimmingly until I upgraded firmware early in 2019. The upgrade deprecated the Genie app and parental control forcing users to pay for Disney Plus parental controls. I rolled back firmware for parental controls, the app no longer works so I have to sit down at a PC and have connectivity problems ever since e.g., the wifi connections always say Limited and speedtests are slow 2 mbps. I have to hard restart and the speeds are back still shows limited. My family complains about the wifi all the time. QOS is off not sure what else to check. To resolve connectivity and app issues I am considering : Upgrading to a better router and looking for suggestions. Flashing DD-WRT but am not sure that will resolve the connectivity and app issues. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Upgrading Asus RT-N66U, Wifi 5 or Wifi 6? Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:27 PM PST Hello all so I have recently been looking into upgrading my aging router but routers aren't really something I follow at all and as a result my overall understanding of the current market of routers is limited. I noticed that recently there have been these "Wifi 6" routers that have came out and I was looking at the TP-Link Archer AX3000 and the Asus RT-AX56U but based on my understanding the benefit of an AX router can't fully be realized until you have a decent amount of devices that actually support AX. Would it make sense for me to go for one of the AX routers I listed (or possibly a different AX router) or should I go for one of the more "refined" AC routers that have came out in the last year or two? Need to upgrade my ASUS RT-AC66U, need some recommendations Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:31 PM PST Hello everyone, I apologize if this is not the right area to post this, but here goes. So my ASUS router is going on 8 years old, and I need to get something that will handle a bigger workload over a larger space. I have 1Gbps down, and I am looking for the best options out there to replace my current router. My current setup drops more than I'd like, and my streaming devices are regularly buffering and sometimes just stops working altogether. I've gone the Google route, but it seems that reviews for the top recommended routers are all bad when I go to Amazon to get more info. I know the reviews are somewhat skewed, but if I'm dropping $300 on a router it needs to be a darn good one. I really enjoyed my ASUS router, but it's time to upgrade. We are heavy users, with multiple Roku streaming devices, Alexas, phones, laptops, and PS4s. We have a 2000 sq. ft home, and a large yard, so I need something with good coverage. Router is located in our basement, and I would like it to stay there. I'm in the tech field, but not the network side, so I ask here for help with any recommendations. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Having trouble connecting to router (tp link archer c1200) Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:46 PM PST Have used this router in the past its been about 6 months since ive used. Integrated wifi in my isp's modem is quite weak, so I had them switch it to bridge mode to make use of the router I have. But now I cannot connect to the router with my pc or through wifi. Im not getting an ip address and for the wireless, neither of the networks show up. Ive reset the router to stock, have it just connected to my computer, but nothing. Windows just says unidentified network and its not giving me an ip address, nor showing a default gateway. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Ping Spikes When Streaming Netflix Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:32 PM PST Every night my sister streams Netflix on her Smart TV and whenever I'm playing a game, my ping spikes up to 700-800 suddenly, for about 30 seconds. My regular ping is about 70-90, and my plan with my ISP is 30 Down, 10 Up. I live in a semi-rural area, so this is the best I can get. Are there any solutions to this? My ISP does offer 50 down, 45 Up, so would paying for the more expensive plan fix this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:18 PM PST So I am not coming from a networking/IT background - just a dabbler. Is there a reason to run RADIUS in a home environment? Should I run a radius server and authenticate wifi with it? Can I do something with server and other device authentication? How about reverse proxying or wireguard? Honestly, just not sure what the use case is. [link] [comments] |
SSH into server on an external network without opening a port Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:33 PM PST Hello, I have noticed it is possible to remotely control an idle device using chrome remote desktop, without opening a port. Would something similar but with SSH on a Linux server be possible, to access from an external source? Web searches proved to be irrelevant. Thank you for your time [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:25 PM PST Backstory about this project: I'm on an Airbase at tech training, and the only option for internet in the dorms is Boingo, which offers poor bandwidth of only 3 devices(you have to enter the mac address of each device on your Boingo account page) for over $50 per month. I have some devices I would like to setup to access via a wired connection, and I would also like to setup my own "home network" so some of my devices can talk to each other without having to go across the Boingo network. Some of the devices I want to connect to my in-dorm "home network" are 2 raspberry pi 4's, a raspberry pi 3b, a firestick(with ethernet adapter), my laptop, and possibly cellphone. So this isn't exactly HomeNetworking, (more Home-away-from-HomeNetworking) but I'm hoping to get some help nonetheless. I've tried 3 different tutorials I found online for using a Pi to create a WiFi-to-Ethernet bridge, all with the same result-no internet access. These are the ones I tried: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=132674 https://www.instructables.com/id/Share-WiFi-With-Ethernet-Port-on-a-Raspberry-Pi/ https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-wifi-bridge/ I've spent the last 3 weeks on this project. I'm hoping someone can please help me. edit- I would also like to route all traffic through my VPN server once I get this figured out. [link] [comments] |
Netgear EX6150v2 All LEDs Blinking Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:08 PM PST Hello, new to this sub and I come with a question. I recently purchased the Netgear EX6150v2 range extender to extend the range of my Netgear R6120 router. It was working great until I accidentally unplugged the router, and while the router is now plugged back in and working just fine, a few of the LEDs on the extender began to blink. I unplugged and replugged the extender and now all of the LEDs are blinking. Particularly, the power LED is blinking amber. I do not have access to any of the extender networks, including the default NETGEAR_EXT. I don't know where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if any more information is needed. [link] [comments] |
X-Roads. Need input on setup and servers Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:07 PM PST Hey everyone, So i have purchased POE led lighting for several rooms in a home i bought a few months ago and that became a problem because the house has no good place to put a server closet. So I decided to build one out on the garage and that sent me down the rabbit hole. I thought...well...if i have a whole server closet i gotta fill it up right? Now i have 46 cat6a drops ready to be put to work, with more coming most likely with the rise of 100watt poe (ceiling fans, blinds, hidden tv cabinets, etc) The plan is/was to build 2 identical "low end" epyc 2u servers for most apps and failover, and a 4u server for file storage, Then one last 1 or 2u machine that runs windows for Blue iris ipcam monitoring. That would leave enough room in the rack for a rack mount battery (for the poe lights and wifi) and future expansion. Thats still pretty much the plan but today was the day I Started on the last peice of the software side. Ive gotten off the "cloud" and setup everything I use day to day on a fresh machine in docker containers. (Docker so i can move to the new hardware with ease) Today however i started looking at my mail server. The original plan was to take my mail server off vultr (been running great for over a year) and install mailu on the local machine. The basic question is, should i continue down this path with everything running in docker containers on a single host ? With all the open ports and resources mailu uses, is it a good idea to keep all the other services running on such an exposed peice of hardware? I also host a few other people's/business's email (hence the fail over requirement) and ive seen my vps use all the resources it had for 15-20 minutes at a time. I use nginx installed on the host doing all the reverse proxy things to each container and providing certificates to the clients. But idk, should this mail server be in a completly separate machine? Which means less room in my rack for future expansion less airflow and a 2 more servers to build. Anyways...what can i do differently? How would you guys set this up differently) the only real limitation i have is airflow in that closet but I'm working on that. Any thoughts [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:53 AM PST Hey there, I'm trying to set Windows file sharing to work outside the lan windows 10 pro noip ddns tp link tl-wr840n windows 10 native vpn server vpn clients also windows and Android built in VPN client let's go by steps I have outside hosts, clients that can be windows machines, android devices etc.., that i can connect to my VPN server using my dynamic dns, i'm using port 1723 forwarded to 192.168.0.100 wich is where my vpn server is set Remote and access control are allowed on the firewall, private and public. I'm able to connect to the VPN server but in the mini wan (pptp) status ipv4 connectivity is not connected, i suppose that it should be showing an ip address in there in the vpn settings i'm using ip range in the same subnet I'm able to connect to another file sharing on the VPN network but unable to connect to the file sharing that is on the same machine that the VPN server is configured the file sharing i'm trying to access is 192.168.0.100 and the VPN Server is 192.168.0.100, yes! is the same machine. if i disable the firewall works but thats far away from ideal I know pptp it's the least secure buts it's way better than open 445 and connect to it directly the reason I'm using, it's because i don't want to use any third party software because i want to access it everywhere and it's really inconvenient downloading dedicated clients in every machine/devices and also be able to connect even if i don't have admin rights to install anything that's also the reason i'm not using ftp or ssh [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 03:28 PM PST I'm looking into getting a wifi extender for my kitchen which is a complete dead zone. I'm not sure if you're allowed to post links on here but the one I'm looking at is the 750Mbps Wifi range extender by Rock Space on Amazon. It plugs into an outlet but I noticed what looks like an ethernet port at the bottom. I know the range extender works wireless but what exactly does the ethernet port do? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Useful switchers for learning and practice networking Posted: 29 Feb 2020 03:27 PM PST What would be an economic "good" switcher to learn? I'm thinking buying the NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Pro Switch (GS308T) from Amazon, but the reviews have me confused. Any recomendations? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:36 AM PST Hey there, i just configured WOL to wake my computers outside the network and its working great however i use Wake On Lan android App that requires a ping port to check the online Status i'm using RDP default port 3389 which is open on the router and firewall and i can RDP this Machine successfully in and out of the network. Can someone help? I have a three way problem... Posted: 29 Feb 2020 03:43 AM PST (Solved) I have a router with sim card based network and recently I have faced an issue regarding accessing one specific server on one specific laptop on specificly 4g connection.... When I have 4g enabled on my router and I try to access League Of Legends on my laptop, it doesn't load ("TImed out" or something, which basically means I am unable to access that server). But when I try to access League Of Legends server on a different device with the same connection it works with no problems. The same happens if I only change the router to a different one ( or just put the sim in phone) - I can access League of Legends server through my laptop with no problems. Also if I change the router to use only 3g then everything also works like a charm ( except slower and weaker connection). So the problem is between 1 specific router with 4g connection, 1 specific server(league of Legends) and 1 specific device. I have tried changing DNS server, reseting router to factory settings, use ethernet cable, reinstall Legue of Legends but nothing seems to do the trick. So I am a bit confused on what exactly could be the problem between the combination of 3 things.... Solution : change MTU on router from 1500 to 1300 [link] [comments] |
Synology RT2600ac vs Nighthawk X4S Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:38 PM PST Just signed up for Comcast Gigabit and am looking at which router to buy. I'd like something simple and easy since I'm not that technical with this stuff (so an all in one). I'm just trying to get the fastest and most reliable wifi experience possible (I know it will be less than gigabit over wifi). Given that and my devices below, which do you think is a better choice? If you have a different all in one, that would be good too.

Preferred modem? Netgeat CM600 vs Motorola MB7621 on Xfinity Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:31 PM PST Just got Xfinity 200mbps internet and needed some suggestions on which router to keep. Bought Netgeat CM600 and Motorola MB7621 to use with my ASUS AC1300 router. Hard to gauge the difference with speedtest given how much it fluctuates throughout the day. Both have been solid around 100-220 mbps when in the same room as the router. Any benefit to one over the other before I send one back? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:23 PM PST Hello, I have the TP LINK AC1900 V1. I understand that if I connect a USB storage to the router I can create a minidlna server. Is there a way of turning this storage into a NAS instead? [link] [comments] |
AiProtection Time Scheduler behaving oddly (ASUS AC68U) Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:22 PM PST hello all, I've been using the time scheduler function of my router with WiFi devices for month without an issue to restrict internet to my kids tablets. Lately, I added a computer to the list. First on its WiFi connection. No on there. I then removed the WiFi card, connected it via Ethernet and changed the scheduler rule with this new Device ( diferente Mac address) and I'm having issues. The router just blocks the computer no matter the time in the day (no matter the schedule restriction I'm configuring). No way to make it work. I have to remove the computer from the devices managed to get internet back on it. I don't know what is happening. Any clue on what I could do to solve that? I do not want to put the WiFi adapter back .... the PC is 2m (7feets) away from the router. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:05 PM PST I'm working on some firewall rules on my Edgerouter 12, but a couple aren't working as I'd expect. It's probably something stupid I'm missing... I've got VLAN 50, a subnet with CIDR range 10.0.50.0/24 on eth3 port (interface name is eth3.50). The subnet's gateway is 10.0.50.1. My internet port is eth9. In this configuration I want devices in the subnet to be able to establish new connections to the internet, but not talk to other devices in any VLAN. The problem is that my VLAN 50 IN/OUT firewall rules don't seem to be matching. My IN/OUT accept rules for internet traffic don't seem to be matching. Both IN/OUT are falling through to the default rule, which is going to be a drop. OUT rule on eth3.50 is accept source interface address eth9 to destination interface network eth3.50 for established/related. IN rule on eth3.50 is accept source interface network eth3.50 to destination address eth9 for new/established/related. For example, when I execute a curl to google.com on 10.0.50.154 with the rules listed above and default for IN/OUT as accept, I see the following:
You can see that my IN/OUT rules aren't matching. The curl is falling through to default for both IN/OUT. The curl worked aboved because the default IN/OUT is accept. As soon as I change default IN/OUT to drop, the curl no longer works. I see the following:
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Question: Installing fiber optics Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:53 PM PST Hello, so I am trying to convince my parents to install fiber optics, but to do that I have to inform myself on how some things work. So we have an ADSL Router connected to a RJ11 splitter. My question is: If we order Fiber Optics, will the technician install a RJ45 connector or does fiber optics also work threw RJ11? Also what kind of router should I buy? (the provider offers me a fritzbox 5490 but its overpriced and old, so i choose not to buy it) (Sorry if the question is stupid or if i made some spelling mistakes) [link] [comments] |
CAT5 Cable for short Gigabit patch connections? Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:17 PM PST Would there be any problems using Cat5 cabling for short 6 to 12 Inch cable runs to connect between devices? Should I buy an extra pcie network card? Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:22 PM PST I am building my home network. From internet provider I got fiber optic modem Nokia G-240WC ( only user account unlocked) for lan, wifi and 4k ip tv decoder. It only have standard 4 lan connections and I need to connect internet by ethernet cable to 8 rooms, server room and in future to use it for home area monitoring, etc. For that I connected this modem to Dlink DGS-1210-48 smart swith with 44x1GbE+ 4x 1GbE Combo SFP and my home server (supermicro x10 mobo) with integrated 2x 1GbE network card. I live with wife and 2 kids. What if 4 of us would like to play some 4k movie from server in the same time and in different room. Does one 1GbE cable connection from swith to home server will be enough? Should I buy some extra pcie card for my server. F.ex I could buy some cheap used IBM 42C1762 PCI-E x8 (10Gb Ethernet ) with transceiver XFP PLRXXL-SC-S43-C1 and connect it by cable to Combo SFPP switch port. Will it work and is it going to help ? I'm just curious if it's worth it ( I had never try building connections over 1GbE). [link] [comments] |
