Are there any alternatives to the x230 that I am missing?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 220 USD MAX, Philippines

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best spec for $

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? WEIGHT IS VERY IMPORTANT, WILL BE TRAVELLING ALOT

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. NA

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No graphical intensive task

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming either

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Weight would be no. 1 priority, ruggedness second

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Hey all, I live in the PH, and prices of laptops here are JACKED. A used thinkpad x230 with the most basic configuration goes for $170-200. Also considering my financial state, I do not have much cash to shell out anyway.

I've already set my eyes on a thinkpad x230 but I'm wondering if there are other laptops within the same price bracket of with the x230 that is LIGHTWEIGHT, CHEAP and DURABLE.

I don't care much about screen resolution since I'm trying to cut corners as much as possible.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 Inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Premier pro, and I do a lot of programming using VS code and Visual studio.

    Looking for a college 2 in 1, US, $1000

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:44 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max budget I am willing to part might be under $1000, the less the better.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The biggest thing is battery life, secondary would be 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important as long as it fits into a backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. As long as the system works with Windows or Linux (or both)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Indifferent, however, the larger the screen, and it can fit a backpack, would be nice.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be programming with the laptop. Gaming is a huge plus (but not necessary.) If I can't game, I'll just use it to watch videos. the 2 in 1 will be used for note-taking when possible.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends, if at all possible.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Stylus included if it is 2 in 1? Convertible over a detachable 2 in 1.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I saw this 2 in 1 https://www.newegg.com/utopia-blue-metal-asus-zenbook-ux431fn-ih74-mainstream/p/1TS-001A-00S86?Description=ASUS%20ZenBoo&cm_re=ASUS_ZenBoo-_-1TS-001A-00S86-_-Product&quicklink=true and wasn't sure if this would be appropriate "up to 10 hours of battery life." I would like to see if there is another 2 in 1 with a larger screen size with similar battery life.

Ultrabook/small laptop for daily use and moderately heavy use?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:24 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $750, United States * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2in1 is preferable but not a deal breaker with great battery life (9hrs+) and decent specs, Preferably a Ryzen APU since their Vega line up has better performance than the HD Series and I will be doing light gaming on this machine, unless I can get a more powerful dedicated GPU at this price * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Thinness isn't crucial, however I do like the look a lot more, and a lower weight goes hand in hand with thinness * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 11-14in, Must be at least a 1080P IPS panel * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Krita, Blender, Pycharm, games such as Cities Skylines, Frostpunk, Stellaris, HOI4, and maybe Assetto Corsa Competizione if I'm away from my main machine and feeling desperate * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Frostpunk, Stellaris, and HOI4: Medium 1080P at 30fps, Cities Skylines: Low 1080P at 20-25fps, Assetto Corsa Competizione: Lowest 1080P at 30fps (If not possible at this price point just ignore it) * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Touch screen and decent build quality (I just don't want it to feel like a Fisher Price toy) * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

    Student/gaming/rendering laptop under 2K AUD

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:59 AM PST

Just got started on this sub, this post's a really tough one, hope you can help!

Total budget and country of purchase:

$2000 AUD ($1300 USD) full price max, but I'd buy something more expensive than that at a discount.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good specifications but must have an equally good battery. 2 in 1 has no use.

How important is weight and thinness to you? I'll be carrying it around a lot for school and perhaps uni. I don't need to have crazy-light MacBook size (performance compromise), but I can't have anything too bulky.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 to 15 inch, I can go 13 if the laptop's powerful or especially fits my needs. I like a bigger screen for video editing and gaming.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do CAD work, DaVinci Resolve video editing, and light gaming. Hint hint, GPU is a must.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't need any RTX 2080 GPU, but I'd like something that is a dedicated GPU. I run some light Steam games and game emulators.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is high priority! I prefer a body that is aluminium, and a discrete design that doesn't look like a spaceship. Touch-screen is one of my lowest priorities, I have no use for it. Regarding display, I'd go 1080p IPS, a 120hz+ display would be nice but isn't a must. 4K imo is a battery waster for anything below 15-inch.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I like the design of Razer's laptops, but the price and reliability are the factors putting me off. To summarise, a laptop with good performance (GPU included), battery life, IPS display, and good portability.

    Hope you can help!

I’m a senior currently and start college in the fall. My laptop just broke, and I’m debating on whether I should buy another laptop or an iPad.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 04:24 AM PST

Which is better for class? Also, what kind of laptop or iPad should I buy? What would be the best features to look for? I've heard iPads are easier to carry around and are good for handwriting notes. I'm used to being able to type and print, however, and am not sure if it would be able to handle certain tasks. Please help!! Also, obviously since I'm a high school student, if it could be on the cheaper side that would be ideal. My dad said he might be able to contribute maybe half to the cause, so I would be able to spend around $300-400 myself. Probably an $800 max.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800 max and US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'll be taking it to class, so fairly travel-friendly.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not any that I know of yet

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I just want some opinions on what y'all think would be best for college.

    Is This a Good Deal?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

Assuming I'm okay with buying "renewed" from Amazon, how does this deal look for a portable laptop to run light-medium games (League, Fortnite, etc.)?

Need help choosing between these two laptops

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:11 PM PST

Hello there, I'm looking for a new travel laptop for work (Software development). Budget is roughly 1200 CAD. Was debating between these two:

    MSI PS63 (a bit over budget)https://www.newegg.ca/msi-ps-series-ps63-modern-008/p/N82E16834155343?Item=N82E16834155343

    Acer Aspire 5 https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-Canada-CI7-10510U-Windows-A515-54-764J/dp/B081P2Y3V6/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=A515-54-764J&qid=1582866844&sr=8-1

I'm leaning towards the MSI PS63 for battery life and 16gb RAM. The aspire 5's price is interesting though. Any thoughts or more suggestions?

    Soldered RAM - bad?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:14 AM PST

Hello, what do you, experienced fellas, think about soldered RAM? It's often, when soldered RAM fails? And, this lowers upgradability over time. Sometimes you can't install enough RAM and can't make frequency higher.

Last socketed CPU was Intel Haswell and AMD A-series, which is hurt too.

I really want to know your opinion.

Been stalling on getting a laptop forever and looking for recommendations

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:46 PM PST

I don't know much computer language but here's the stuff I'm looking for:

SIZE - small enough to fit inside a backpack
WEIGHT - don't care much about this, but let's have the weight range be between the point at which I won't notice if it's missing from a backpack (somewhere below 11" MacBook Air weight) and an average textbook
BRAND - not much preference but I don't think any Apple computers are going to cut it (also leaning toward any brand that's generally reliable)
BATTERY - good enough to last 8-12 hours (length of an average school day plus travel time and extracurriculars) or generally doesn't run out of power ridiculously fast
CAMERA - don't care because I'll be taping over it
DISPLAY - HD would be good and possibly something faster than 60 Hz
    GRAPHICS - something dedicated
RAM - at least 8 GB
STORAGE - at least 200-250 GB, since I plan to use this laptop as my main computer
    CORES - see below
PROCESSING SPEED - enough to run the follow programs comfortably:
PROGRAMS I USE - AutoCAD Mechanical, Ultimaker Cura, Photoshop, some MMOs (e.g. agar.io, diep.io), Youtube (a lot), Google Docs (a lot), internet browsers, whatever I need when I have to do extensive research
PROGRAMS I WANT TO USE - mid-range video editing software, screen recording software (if it's not included with the video editing stuff), coding software, other software I might need for college (that's a wide net though so idk), livestreaming stuff (idk about this either), Geometry Dash, Cities: Skylines, Minecraft, other Steam games (possibly)
OTHER FEATURES - at least 2 USB ports and preferably an SD card slot, touchscreen (really helpful), screen hinge that rotates 360 degrees (so it's harder to break), trackpad that isn't separated with buttons, backlit keyboard (so I can type in the dark)
    BUDGET - $600-750

Any advice is welcome and also I live in America.

US high school student looking for ~$400 laptop

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:12 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

USA, and I'd really prefer not to go over 400 but I'll consider up to 500.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specs for the money.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Portability would be great but it's not a huge deal.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I'm used to Macs but it doesn't matter all that much.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I need to be able to connect it to a drawing tablet and run digital art programs for it, and I'd like to run light gaming on it like visual novels and text based games as well as be able to run and code a little with Python, if possible.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't really know a lot about computers (hence why I'm here) but I don't think games like visual novels are too hard on laptops? I'm not looking to play anything with lots of graphics.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I just want something that will last as long as possible for the price. Thank you!

Laptop for soon to be College Graduate, design student

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 10:23 AM PST

My current laptop is very, very broken. I am graduating in a few months and want to get a decent, new laptop. I currently need it for class (hence laptop instead of desktop), but in the future I plan on using it for video editing, web development, 3D modeling, all the Adobe Creative Cloud, and maybe game development.

Total budget and country of purchase:
up to $1600 (potentially willing to go a little higher higher)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Best specs for my money. The higher RAMs, the better and at least 1 SSD.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight or thinness isn't too important. I would like it to be thinnish, but it's not a big deal if it's not.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15in or larger would be nice

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, AfterEffects, Blender, Cinema 4D, Unity3D

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I probably won't be gaming (other than the simple stuff I build) much on this laptop. It's mostly for work and school

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
a good back-lit keyboard. Anything else is a plus, but not needed. At least 1 HDMI port and 1 USB port

[Canada] New in the country and bestbuy is trash

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:56 PM PST

Not familiar with the popular sites/stores here in Canada, only bestbuy, I am kinda picky so I need at least 13+ inch screen, decent processor (2.40 GHz would be more than enough), as much RAM as I can get, but probably about 8 GB at the lowest, 250 GB minimum HDD

I know that's pretty specific and a little vague at the same time but anything I can order online (with a European card) or even site or store suggestions welcome, thanks in advance!

Total budget and country of purchase: $1,100 CAD, Canada, using an European credit card if that matters

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good specs and performance above all else

How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care about weight

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything bigger that 13 inches, as for resolution, as good as I can get

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly for multitasking and high usage, if I could play something like kenshi o wouldn't complain either

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't mind the lowest settings as long as the game runs

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ideally something with a good shell as Iintend to travel with it a lot, at least 2 USB ports, an HDMI and a jack, don't really need a disk drive or anything else really

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I should have peed before I started editing this instead of before

Laptop under $250 USD with a disc drive that can do very light gaming and video editing

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:03 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: $250, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs possible for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, because of the programs I'm planning to use

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, anything 11.6 inches or more is good for me

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If I do any video editing in the future it will just be for low quality guitar covers. Not sure what editing software I'd use though

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rocksmith 2014 Remastered and maybe Clone Hero in the future. Anything around 30fps or more will suffice

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I definitely need a disc drive. A webcam would be nice too, but it's not a deal breaker

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd be fine buying a refurbished laptop too, as long as the seller seems reputable

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:20 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1500 but less is better, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Definitely best specs for the money. a good display is important as well as any overheating concerns

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not the most important but nice to have. not anything more than 6 pounds

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" is preferred but anything smaller would be fine. No 17" options

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Autocad LT, light use of Adobe software (illustrator, photoshop, video editing).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Definitely borderlands 3 at 1080p roughly 60fps but never below 30fps. i'm not concerned about 4k at all

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I can wait 6ish months if anyone feels i would be better off for something that would come up better later

    [US $1250 11" - 14.4"] Laptop for student/D&D dork/Minecraft

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:13 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1250$ (Can go a little above, but only with good reason.) Had a Spectre x360 ordered, but cancelled due to shipping delays. Wouldn't be opposed to reordering one (preferably not from the HP store, though). Would also not be opposed to splitting budget between a good normal clamshell and a decent android tablet with pen support. United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Would prefer a 2 in 1 with 12-16gb of ram. Good battery life is a must (at least a realistic 6 hours of screen on time per charge) and an easily replaceable battery would be even nicer. Needs to last for an entire DND session without charging, since accessible outlets are at a premium when you're shoveled into a room with like 6 other dorks. I also have to use this thing in class.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightweight and thin would be nice. I'm a sucker for itty-bitty bezels. "Gaming Laptop" silhouettes are an immediate no.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac preferred (if a good deal on a macbook+ipad can be found).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Would prefer <= 14 inches, but anything that isn't a 17 inch ogre is fine. 1080p mandatory, but willing to go up to 4k if budget and battery life don't suffer too much. Would also not prefer OLED, as burn in scares the daylights out of me.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Firefox with too many tabs open. Want to be able to drive a 1440p and 1080p external monitor as well. As an aside (not required), ArcGIS/qGIS and PCI Geomatica capability would be nifty.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft and light emulation are the only games that I would conceivably play away from my tower. Minecraft especially as I play it a lot with my SO. 30FPS at the very least, as I can get 15 with my current laptop. (an x230) However, it would be nice to be able to run bluestacks/memu alongside another game, as I enjoy some grindy gachas like Arknights that benefit from autoing in an emulator in the background while doing stuff.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Thunderbolt is also a must-have, as I plan to use an external GPU to replace my desktop at some point. Big fan of nice build quality. I also like to doodle -- and am reasonably good at it -- so quality pen interaction would also be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This isn't a pressing need, so I'm willing to wait for refreshes or new products if they're coming out soon enough, like that Samsung Flex thing. "noteb.com" need not apply. I've tried your website already and found it unsavory.

I have 2 165ghz monitors by MSI that i use on my desktop (she will be using the 1 when on the laptop) I need to know the best laptop i can get for £900 or less. Something that can run games at 60fps and she can enjoy!

The only laptop I’ve ever bought just died on me, now I have no idea where to start on replacing it. Any help is appreciated!!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:23 PM PST

I apologize if this a silly request for advice, the CPU on my school laptop is fried and I have no idea where to start with getting a new one.

Total budget and country of purchase: * My budget is $300 and I'm in the United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: * My only preference is something easy to use, but it's not a necessity

How important is weight and thinness to you? * Weight or thinness is not important to me, as long as I can fit it in my backpack, I'm okay! My last laptop had around a 16in display I believe?

Which OS do you require? * Windows is my preferred operating system, but I'm not too picky!

Do you have a preferred screen size? * N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? * I used my last laptop to run basic stuff like Microsoft office and occasionally Steam

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? * I like to play Stardew Valley and similar simple games, in my free time between classes :) I use default graphics settings and I prefer anything above 30 FPS (or whatever you recommend)

    • As far as special requests, I don't think I have any. I would just want something rather reliable, which is why I came here!

I'm open to ideas outside of my budget or refurbished options, I just appreciate your help! Thank you :)
