Windows 10 restarts to install version 1903 from 1803, but when it boots into the desktop, I still have version 1803 and its still asking me to install 1903.

This has been happening for about a month or two. Not sure what I did that could cause this, as I am pretty sure I had version 1903 before this issue occurred. One thing that I can maybe think of was that I was trying to downgrade me Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Home with the help of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTjLd57QgDY

I didn't go through with the whole process in the video, only stopping after changing the names in regedit (and changing them back to what it was originally after deciding not to go through with it.) The issue didn't happen right after I did this either, but about a week or two after. So this is the general process of the issue that I have to go through everyday:

    1.Boot PC

    2. Windows asks me to update to 1903 and wants to automatically restart

    1. Restart to install 1903

    2. PC boots into version 1803, with Windows still saying it needs to install 1903

This cycle of it automatically restarting to update happens 1-2 times per day

    Found out I have a non-legitimate Windows 10. How do I fix?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:31 AM PST

Hello, I am not very technical and would appreciate some help.

I bought a used (custom built) PC 6 months ago and I found out today that my Microsoft Windows 10 Pro was activated using a "KMS". I am now receiving a "Your Windows licence will expire soon" pop up.

I would like to purchase a legitimate key and remove illegitimate files from my system (for security reasons). How do I go about this? Thanks.

    Video streaming UI for Windows?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:39 PM PST

    Hello,

Is there any program option that supports multiple streaming channels for a Windows desktop? Something similar to Roku UI where I could flip between streaming programs with a steam controller instead of getting up to my desktop every time I'd like to change the channel.

My Googling has brought me up short :(

My windows 10 computer exploded and I need to reinstall the OS. I don't have an extra hard drive to put windows 10 installation media on, but I have an old windows 7 disc. If I reformat the drive and install windows 7, can I ever go back to windows 10 or will I have lost the key?

HELP! I accidentally turned my C: drive into a simple volume/dynamic disk

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:49 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/KtgNXg9

I was trying to reallocate some of the extra space on disk 0 to disk 1 (shown in the image) and accidentally turned my C: drive into a simple volume. After doing some research I realized that this is a big no-no.

Any help would be much appreciated. This is a new computer so if wiping/resetting it is a viable solution I'm more than happy to do that, as long as it restores the disk to basic.

System freezes on boot after BSOD, even freezes when trying to re-install Windows from flash drive.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 02:47 AM PST

Pretty much all I know about this is in the title. The PC bluescreened while I was watching a video and downloading (maybe installing) a Windows update yesterday and it hasn't been able to boot since then. It also crashed when I tried rerolling to a safepoint from two days ago (in recovery mode!). I created a bootable flashdrive to re-install Windows from. When I try to do that, the PC freezes during installation when it wants to reboot for the first time during the process. It's stuck at just the Setup background with a cursor (unable to move).

Does this sound like a dead system disk to anyone else (haven't tried installing to a different disk yet, because that would mean losing all data on there).

The system has been trouble-free until now. Need help badly!

Edit: I just noticed that the setup does not show my other two harddisks properly (when selecting where to install Windows). Only the tiny reserved partitions on there. It only shows the disk it was previously installed on in its entirety. Does that make sense to anyone?

Edit 2: It seems to be connected to rebooting, it also happens when I exit the BIOS with "Save & reboot". Instantly.

Edit 3: SOLVED! Thanks for the suggestions, all. Seems like one of the RAM slots is faulty, swapping the sticks from 2&4 to 1&3 solved the issue.

CPU constantly at >30% after updating Radeon sofware

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:26 PM PST

I updated the Radeon software/driver today and the CPU has been running at around 30% since then. (Shows 'Radeon Host Application' in Task Manager)

It's the same even after rebooting.

    How can I solve this?

    Thank you.

PS: I think Radeon GPU is not used anyway as I see in Task Manager the GPU used most of the time is Intel.

When sharing a drive on the network, how do I set the password?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:26 PM PST

I have a 4TB external hard drive connected to my desktop PC, and shared on my WiFi network. My iPhone and my wife's Android phone can both access it, while on WiFi, and so can the laptop (also has to be on WiFi). But today, I'm not sure what changed, all of a sudden I need a password. That's fine, I put in my Windows username and Microsoft account password, and it says it's wrong. It says the username is fine and lets me select it from a list, but it says the password is wrong. I use a PIN to log in to Windows, and it doesn't like that either. So I find where I can disable the password requirement in Network/Sharing, easy enough, but, if I want that feature active, where do I set the password? Most people who get on my WiFi won't know to look for the drive, but on the off chance someone does, the password thing would be nice, but it's not essential given my use case. I'm not giving my WiFi info to just anyone.

Would reformatting my laptop get rid of my virus?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:02 PM PST

I've tried long and hard to get rid of this browser virus on my Acer laptop but nothing works everytime I remove the problem it comes back. I genuinely don't mind reformatting my Windows 10 laptop because I've already saved important files and photos on a separate flash drive. Two options show up when I get to resetting, "Just remove my files" and "Remove files and clean the drive". Under the last option it says "Use this if you're recycling the PC". Now I don't want to leave my laptop all useless I intend on using it again but as a fresh new laptop so I'm a bit confused by what "recycling" means.

Basically, I want to willingly reformat my laptop to get rid of whatever virus is on it and to be able to use again as if it's new afterwards.

Why can't Windows' 10 printing software just show a preview of what I'm printing?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:14 AM PST

So the other day I was i a class and the teacher told us to print some answers. These answers were 4 pictures that he explained how to make fit into a single A4 sheet. It was using Windows 7 or so.

Here I am in Windows 10 trying to do the same thing and I just can't cuz of the printing software which is just so inferior to old versions of Windows. The "collage" option seems to be what I need but Windows can't be bothered to show me a preview before I waste some paper.

Like, honestly, how do you make the decision of just straight up delete a feature like previewing ur print? What good does it do???

Sorry I'm just salty about this.
I'm sure there's a hidden setting all the way in the new "Settings" tab that should do this.

    Pls HELP

wondering how Microsoft Office works online through a browser, and if it's worth it?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:17 AM PST

Hi all, I'm a little new to Windows. I normally use Mac and Linux. Recently, I have started messing around with Windows 10 on my home computer, as I signed up for an editing class that I will need Microsoft Word for.

I am taking a trip next month and will only have my laptop, which runs Linux. I was looking into my options for using Microsoft Word on Linux, and I have two options: either run it through Wine/PlayOnLinux, or run Microsoft Word through the browser.

Using Wine or PlayOnLinux isn't an option for me for a few reasons, so I was considering purchasing Microsoft Office Suite to use Word online through the browser. But it's pretty expensive, so I was wondering a few things:

    • Do I have to buy the whole Microsoft Office Suite package to use the browser Word package? Or is there a smaller "package" that I can purchase? All I need is Word online.
    • I HAVE to be able to use the Track Changes feature on Word. Is this possible through the browser?
    • I was also hoping to use Windows shortcuts on Word... is this possible through the browser?

    Thanks for any help! =)

Is there a way to bring a tab to the front of the screen and have it stay there?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:17 AM PST

I want to be able to watch films on a video player (I'm using potplayer, though I guess it doesn't matter which one it is) while browsing the internet without having to make little squares of browser windows that don't overlap with Potplayer. Is there a preexisting function like this or a program that allows you to do that? Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, I couldn't find a different one. Many thanks

    Taskbar not displaying notifications

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:56 AM PST

So previously, whenever I'd get a notification on Chrome, Spotify, Discord, League, or whatever application I'm using. The app icon on the task bar these would light up to let me know. League would glow yellow and Discord would display a red ping icon, but ever since I reinstalled windows they've stopped doing that. It makes it really hard to keep up with who is messaging me and what not.

Is there a way to enable this? I've checked the notification settings inside both apps but none of them have an option for it.

Laptop screen doesn't turn on during windows 10 update

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:12 PM PST

This morning it said there was an update. Closed everything and activated the 1903 cumulative (iirc) update. It started restarting, did the "loading X%", then restarted, but screen doesn't turn on. The power is on but the screen is off. Waited 5 minutes and nothing. Turned it off with power button and then turned on again and the same.

    Windows 10, old Lenovo laptop

    Any ideas?

Edit: and I've had it on for 20 mins now and nothing happens. I've also tried spamming F8 right after turning on and ctrl alt del, nothing.
