A laptop for Uni around 300-350 euros

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:15 AM PDT

-300-350 euros of budget, I'm from Italy but I can buy from ebay and other sites too

-I'd need it to have a decent battery life (around 5 hours) but also specs worth the price , a good cpu will do - I don't want to bring a brick to Uni lessons but I don't need it to be paper thin, something in the middle would be the best

-I require Windows, any version from 7 onwards is good

    • The screen size is not that much of a problem, it must be maximum 15"

-I will be running mostly Chrome, Coding programs for Uni, Photoshop and Spotify

    • I won't do any major gaming, maybe I will play some light games on steam and minecraft

-I just need a reliable laptop for University as I already have a desktop pc at home where I do most of the stuff, and it needa to last for some years for what it needs to do. An ssd would be nice too, as I had a bad experience with hdds on laptops, and 8 gbs of ram, possibily.

Looking for laptop for school/work, under $1000 USA

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:18 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Max $1000, but preferably under around $600, USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specifications, I'd need it to run Chrome and InDesign quickly

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not very important

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows or Mac

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I'd want a good keyboard but not a dealbreaker

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

My current laptop is about 15 minutes from startup to actually getting to work, so something fairly faster would be great

    IdeaPad 730S or XPS 13?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:54 AM PDT

I'm looking for a new laptop. At first I thought I will go with Dell XPS 13, but today I have come across Lenovo Yoga S730 (The one for 850 GBP, sorry couldn't find link with prize in USD). To me it seems that they are mostly same, with Dell having slightly newer CPU. Is it the only difference? Because the price difference is almost 750$. Also if someone knows about better laptop that meets my needs feel free to let me know.

I will use this laptop for coding mostly, so I mostly need small light laptop, with good battery life.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1800$, Czech Republic (Central Europe)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is a must
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lighter is better, I would love to get below 1.3kg (2.8 pounds)
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, but doesn't matter if it comes with Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 13" (12.5" - 13.5")
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't do any graphics intensive tasks. Mostly coding.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm looking for something with good build quality, which will survive everyday traveling. Good keyboard is a plus, but not specifically needed. I would like to have thunderbolt port for docking possibility.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically those two laptops, mentioned above, fill my needs entirely, I'm just looking for something like that, with the best price possible.

Looking for laptop for work, large screen (17+inch) but not too bulky, on a budget ($800 or less, USA)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:21 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800 or less, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Display quality and CPU priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Relatively important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, I have a Mac for personal use

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17 or greater - I work in research/medicine and often have to read a paper & write notes, or have two spreadsheets running at once so this is important

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is essential. Build and CPU quality are important. Don't care about a touch screen or much else

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically want a laptop that will "feel" like a desktop if that's a thing because 99% of the time I will be at my desk/a desk. Pretty much just running Office (excel, word), Google Docs, Adobe Reader and Chrome - not much else . Complete idiot when it comes to this stuff so I appreciate the help

Need a good laptop for audio editing, video editing, and gaming (around $1000 or under)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 05:49 AM PDT

Hey ya'll, was hoping for some quick help in finding a laptop :) It's time to retire my old Lenovo y510p, while it's done it's job -- it has been full of issues, the biggest being temperature. At this point in the laptops life, I idle around 60-70 and games can push the CPU core to near 100c.

It's time to move onto something new, so without further ado.

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

--I don't want to spend over $1200, and prefer it to be as close to $1000 as possible. Buying in the United States

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

--Looking for best specs, longevity, upgradability. My laptop is plugged in 99% of the time, so batter life is not that important.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    --Doesn't matter.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    --Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    --At least 15.6"

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

--I run a video podcast for you-tube, editing videos at 1080p, but i may occasionally release a video in 4k for other projects. Editing 4k video on a 1080p monitor is fine. Also editing audio, and the mixer will run directly to the laptop during recording as well. I am also a heavy gamer. Though I don't typically play shooters, I still do play some pretty graphic intensive games from time to time -- Though I typically stick to indie games.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I'd like to be able to play whatever without much worry, i prefer the best settings and fps I can get in this price range.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

    Good thermals.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I keep coming back to the Acer Helios 300, which is currently on sale on amazon for $1099.99 - but would like to hear from ya'll before I pull the trigger. I have read about some pretty notorious screen bleed on the helios which worries me.

    Thank you!

Please help me purchase a laptop!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:50 AM PDT

Hey all, I am in need of assistance. My laptop has kicked the bucket and I am in the market for a new one. My old laptop was a 2014 Toshiba L500d, not much to brag about considering it was a base model computer. Now that I have money worked up I can actually afford to spend more on a laptop. My budget is anything under $1,000. Do you guys have any suggestions?

A laptop for gaming, studying, and writing, buying in the US, max $1400

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:08 PM PDT

I need a laptop mostly for writing and schoolwork (so that's basically MS Word, Excel, and Access), also coding (I mostly use Unity). I'd also like to be able to play some games, like Minecraft and the Sims 4, maybe Cities Skylines, but if it would mean a significantly higher price then not. I'd like it to have Windows. My budget is max $1400, but I'd prefer it to cost closer to $1000 or less. I don't know if it's too much or not for my needs, because it's my first time buying a laptop.

I spent some time looking, but I'm completely lost and I have no idea what I'm looking for. I liked the Razer Blade Stealth (13) and ASUS ROG Zephyrus G GA502.

Ideally it would be good to use on a plane, but it doesn't have to be.

    Software development laptop

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:33 AM PDT

Guys I'm trying to pick a laptop for work, and need more options to choose from.

    Absolute must-haves:

    • Available in Russia

    • 13-14 inch (14 is much more preferable)

    • 32Gb RAM on board, or easily expandable (I do need that much)

    • No discrete GPU

    • 1.5kg or lighter

    • 7 hours of battery life or more

    Nice-to-haves:

    • Good build quality

    • Nice FHD screen (No need for 4K, battery life is more valuable to me)

    • Is available without OS (I use Linux)

    Kinda on the fence about:

    • 2-in-1. This one sounds good for reading technical literature and textbooks, which I do a lot of, but seems to single-handedly launch price into stratosphere.

I can shell out up to 2500$ for a really nice and well-built machine, but obviously I'd like it to be cheaper.

At this point I see HP Elitebook 840 and Thinkpad T490s as my main options, and Elitebook x360 1040 as main 2-in-1 candidate (unlikely though due to sky-high price). Should I research AMD-based laptops? Are there any other good options that I'm overlooking here? I really like X1 Carbon, but lack of 32Gb option and soldered RAM are not good.

Looking for a laptop for Graphic Design

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:42 PM PDT

Hopefully I filled all this out right, if more info is needed feel free to ask. Thanks in advance

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -$1500-1800 (If its a good deal and not that far off, I will consider paying more as this is going to be for professional use). From the U.S.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Battery life is important and good specs are always welcome. 2 in 1 might be nice if it would double as a drawing pad but not necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -Doesn't really matter. Just worried about the quality and that it will do what I need.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Newest versions of either Windows or Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -A 15 inch would be preferable, but again willing to work if quality is good.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I will be animating, photo editing, illustrating, video editing, and digital 3D designs. Programs would mostly be the Adobe creative cloud programs and Cinema 4D. May run some games, Minecraft or a few indie titles like Darkest Dungeon. Don't foresee any triple A titles being played on it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Don't need maximum settings for gaming, just workable setting so it looks okay and functions properly. Gaming is not the main idea of the laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Quality keyboard is always appreciated. Must be reliable. Touch screen might be nice but not a requirement. As long as the option to use external drives and devices is there, then that's all I need.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -Just looking for a laptop that has enough power for me to create illustrations, animations, and edit the videos in productive and relatively quick manner. I understand that desktop workstation would be a better option overall, I just don't have the room and need something portable for the time being. Thanks again.

maxed out 2015 MacBook Pro for 1k in 2019 still a sensible buy?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 12:06 AM PDT

My trusty 2011 17" has finally crashed (purple lines, bad GPU probably - might just need the thermal paste redone, but ...) I'm in the market for a new laptop for audio work (Logic Pro x, Ableton, Serato).

I'm wondering if I should wait for the 16" rumored to be released end of Oct. Not with the intention of buying it (not looking to spend 3.5k this time around) but because it might drive the price down of the older MBP's on the secondary market.

So...whats the verdict on buying a maxed out 15" 2015 MBP? 2.8ghs, 1tb ssd, 16gb RAM, dual graphics for 1k. The dated CPU and ports are my main hesitation. Not having USB C is fine now...but not so much in 3 years. As a dj, and owner of two clumsy dogs - the MagSafe is still a strong selling point (and the after market solutions for newer models don't review well)

Just looking for advice - a year or two ago, a no-brainer for me, but right now, not sure I want to buy a 5 year old MacBook.

As an aside - whatever I buy, I hope I can use my late 2009 27" iMac as a display.

    Acer Nitro 5 Worth it?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:08 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop since I don't have space for a desktop and the Nitro 5 caught my eye.

I'm mainly looking to do gaming (Witcher, Modded Skyrim, Battlefield, maybe get back into WoW). I'm not really concerned with pulling 60fps on high-ultra in most games since I'm so used to 30 on PS4.

I'd like to play Cyberpunk when it releases and I'm ok with dropping the settings a bit if need be. If it's at least on par with a PS4 then I'm good.

I can't really spend any more than $850 so if there is a better laptop at or under that price I would love to know.

    Thanks.

Budget $1300, looking for good CPU, display, and build quality, USA

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:57 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1300 before tax, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Display, CPU, build quality. Anything else is icing on the cake

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care but should feel solid (tapping on the case shouldn't feel like there's empty space inside)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" - 17", 1980x1080 minimum, screen must be visible outdoors

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly gonna use for CAD and 3D modeling (Rhino) + Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign (often all open at the same time) need good CPU, fyi GPU doesn't affect anything I listed
I have a desktop for heavy modeling and rendering, laptop will only used for presentation, edits on the fly + postproduction

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Display, CPU, build quality are only things that matter for me

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So MacBook Pro has basically everything I'm looking for (cpu, display, and build quality) except it's too expensive and I don't care for the design. I heard good things about thinkpads but I'm trying to see what other options I have. Thanks.

A laptop for gaming and running a business

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:53 PM PDT

Budget: up to $8000 AUD (this is a tax deduction)

Country: Australia, but can source from overseas if the laptop is good

    Uses:

    - Playing monster hunter world

    - Running my business (solo health practitioner), including all reception/business admin and accounting work

    - Needs to have touchscreen

    - Ideally at least 4 hours of battery life

    Priorities:

    - Durability

    - As future-proof as possible

    - Between 13"-15"

    - Upgradeable and can be repaired at any computer shop

    I'm currently looking at:

    - Razer Blade 15 Advanced model (mid 2019) (leaning towards this one because it looks like it has the best design and gaming power, but worried about durability because of the brand's reputation)

    - Asus Zenbook Pro Touchscreen, (not sure if it's upgradeable)

Currently using: 13" Macbook pro 2017 (to be replaced with this new laptop) and Pixelbook, which is the best laptop I've ever used (I absolutely love ChromeOS. If it had smaller bezels, fingerprint reader and could play monster hunter world, it would be the perfect laptop).

Any other suggestions would be super appreciated! :)

    Buying first gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:31 PM PDT

As the title says finally getting back to using computers since moving over a year ago I haven't had any space to use my desktop so im splurging a bit and getting a laptop mainly for gaming. Kinda of overwhelmed with the choices since the graphics card I had in my pc was a gtx 970 or something.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -$1000, want to stay under 800 if possible but if spending the extra 200 is worth it I'll do it. USA

    • **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I don't care less about touchscreen or battery life since I'm gonna be plugged in all the time. Best specs for the money so it'll last me some years

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -don't care at all about this.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -windows please

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -na, but any good deal with a bigger screen I wouldn't mind

    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Mostly gaming. I play mainly wow, league, and AAA games here and there such as battlefield, etc

    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? I'd like to run most games at the momemt in max settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality* a nice keyboard and touchpad would be nice. 120hz screen minimum. A reliable build to last a couple years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Like I said I'd like to keep it around 800 but if spending 200 more would be a significant improvement then I'm willing to spend it. Don't mind buying online or in store

Looking for a cheap Laptop from Bestbuy

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:06 PM PDT

    Hello.

Recently my gaming desktop just went out after 7 years of enjoyment. I'd love to build a new one, but for the foreseeable future, I need to play it safe with finances. However, for my own entertainment and my little brother's, I need to get something to tide things over. I have a small credit limit with Best Buy and was looking for something in the 200-300 dollar range, the cheaper the better.

Things I'd like to do with it are:

-Browse the web, watch youtube, watch twitch streams, netflix, etc

-Be able to have Chrome/Steam/Discord (to voice chat with friends) open without issue

-Be able to play very limited games. preferably old school runescape, and some older games (Trails in the Sky, Kotor, etc) or pixel games on steam for myself, and stuff like Minecraft and Roblox for my little brother.

    Thank you for any suggestions.
