    Simple Questions - October 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Hi people of r/buildapc!

PC randomly turns itself on after I put it to sleep

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:32 AM PDT

I built my computer and it's been running great aside from one issue. I put my computer to sleep, and hours later, it will sometimes turn on. This happens intermittently, and I can't seem to find any cause. The PC usually runs hot when it's on. The monitor doesn't turn on, just the tower. It usually never turns itself back off - it just keeps running til I wake it.

I've wondered if it's installing updates from Steam or Windows, but I'm not sure how it's doing that if it's asleep.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to share some pics of my PC now that I've finally got it up and running. I didn't realize how rewarding of a process building my own computer would be, and I gotta thank everyone here for all the help whenever I had questions about parts. Needless to say I'm pretty proud!

What kind of deals should we expect on Black Friday/Cyber Monday?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:15 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I was wondering how many of you have experience buying PC parts the weekend of Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Or even to those people who are avid price watchers, I'll direct this question toward you: what kinds of deals should people expect after Thanksgiving? Do PC part manufacturers/distributors actually reduce prices by a significant amount? What kind of price drops (percentage-wise) should we expect?

P.S. I know r/buildapcsales is the subreddit that's pretty much dedicated to this topic, but I just wanted to gather some more opinions. Also you can't post a discussion thread over there, as it's only for submitting links to sales.

NCase M1 v.6 arrived late last night. Took a "sick day" today to build my first PC ever. It booted on the first try! Drinks for everyone!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:22 PM PDT

    First. Try. Boot.

Damn proud of myself and damn thankful for this tremendous community. There's no way I would have felt confident enough to follow through on this project without y'all. I'm ready to start "giving back" now (hopefully)!

It was my first build ever, so just stoked it turned on. I'm sure there are folks here that could seriously improve my cable management, but I did the best I could (and yay for closed side panels!)

    Parts list here.

Build album and final product here (although to be honest I was too stressed to take pictures through most of the process.)

My one problem: This one is weird. When I plug the USB dongle for a wireless mouse into either of the front USB ports, the mouse works for about 2 seconds and then the cursor stops moving. This is true for both front ports. The USB dongle works fine in the back ports. The front ports do work, which is the weird part. I'm able to charge my phone through them, for instance. Any thoughts? I'd really like all of my rear-facing USB ports for other cables.

I have to run out for a few hours, but when I get back, time to start digging up resources on "what to do to optimize your setup once it boots for the first time." Feel free to shoot me any advice / links!

Asus RTX 2070 Super ROG Strix Advanced Gaming vs Asus RX 5700 XT ROG Strix OC

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:13 PM PDT

Hi redditor pc builders , I need your opinion on whether to buy Asus rog strix 2070 super or Asus rog strix 5700 XT.
I live in greece and the prices are 625 for nvidia and 560 for amd ( was 480 a week ago , dont know why it spiked that hard). I am searching to find a direct comparison but no one has done one yet or I am unable to find one. So in case you have some good insights I would love to hear them. TBH I am thinking of going the amd way since its cheaper and the performance is almost the same. I dont really care about RT since in a few years it will be software accelerated and not hardware from what I have read. I dont know much about the DLSS tho. So yeah thats all I have to say for now I think . Thanks again!

My pc build as of right now is this:
MB : Asus Maximus X Hero
    CPU : I7 - 8700k
    RAM : 16 GB G.Skill 3200hz
    SSD : M.2 500 gb evo 970
    GPU : Sapphire R9 270
    PSU : 850W Seasonic

Best 25~ inch monitor for gaming?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 02:19 PM PDT

So..i plan to buy a new pc soon (most likely will be ryzen 9 3900x/9900k+2080ti/super)

my desk is very small (about 80cm in length with a wall and a closet in each side)

i was thinking about buying a 27 inch but it may be way too tight.. any 24-25 good monitors?

EDIT: Well.. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.. it seem that there isnt many good options for 25' monitors. i may have to look again at the sizes of the 27 monitors.

Ageing 1155 boards and Windows 10

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:17 PM PDT

Looking to build a system on an old 1155 board with an i7 2600.

I'm wondering if windows will have compatibility issues with boards of this age. For example I'm looking on eBay at Asus P8H61 boards with up to 4 revisions. Will Windows 10 work straight off with any/all of these with no need for bios updates?

When shopping for a second monitor, what features do I need to match to my primary one?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:13 PM PDT

Things like GSNYC/FreeSync, refresh rate, resolution, etc.

For me personally, I have a 24"1440p 144hz GSYNC monitor and a 2070 Super. The monitor is pretty pricey so I would like to cut cost.

Adding Another 2x16GB to a PC with 2x8GB RAM

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:17 AM PDT

Hi all, was hoping to get a straight answer from this subreddit.

Basically as the title says, I had built my PC with 2x8GB 3000mHz Corsair Vengeance RGB, and was planning to get an additional 2x16GB of the same model, however they have discontinued that model and only sell "Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro." I feel like purchasing 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro might cause some issues but was wondering if someone could shed some light onto whether or not It would be fine to do.

pretty much for gaming, more RTS heavy games as well as open world rpgs.

My Gaming PC is in Trouble!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:51 PM PDT

Hey guys this is my first post on here!

But the reason I'm asking for your guys help is because I'm really getting stressed out lately because of my Gaming PC. I had come back to my PC to play some games with my friends and when I logged in everything was fine but when I start up the game I want to play: Rainbow Six Siege. Right when I start the game up... BOOM! The scary BSOD! When this happen I got really scared and confused because I've been playing Siege for over 8 months so I had no clue why it was working. And before you go to the comments my PC can run the game and I get 60 FPS on high and I even have better specs than the recommend ones for the game! I tried looking it up on YT and it said to check for any corrupted files. I wait a whole half hour just for it too say my PC was fine! I then went and updated one of my Display Adapter Drivers and that still didn't work! I'm at a lost for answers and I just don't know why this is happening! Please if any of you guys can help it would be highly appreciated, thanks!

Bought a GTX 1070 for a 7 year old rig, should I just upgrade everything?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:06 PM PDT

I built a PC back in 2012 with the following:

    Asus P8Z77-V LK Intel Z77 DDR3 LGA 1155 Motherboards

    Intel Core i7-3770 Quad-Core Processor 3.4 GHz 4 Core LGA 1155 - BX80637I73770

Corsair Vengeance Blue 16 GB DDR3 SDRAM Dual Channel Memory Kit CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B

    EVGA GeForce GTX760 SuperClocked w/EVGA ACX Cooler 2GB GDDR5 256bit, Dual-Link DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI,DP, SLI Ready Graphics Card (02G-P4-2765-KR) Graphic

I tried to start playing overwatch casually but it would freeze. Upgraded video card, and even upgraded to windows 10 and found that it froze more on windows 10 so I went back to windows 8.1

For a second I thought it might have just been my video card going out, so I bought a GTX 1070 ftw but I still get my game crashing every now and then, especially when I upgrade to windows 10.

Could it just be that I'm overdue for a new everything? I thought I read somewhere that this specific motherboard doesn't jive too well with windows 10.

I was just playing Deus Ex Mankind Devided and it froze after a while.

It's just really weird since I was able to play Witcher 3 on high and the frame rate would drop by it would never freeze or crash so, i just wonder why that it.

    Thanks.
