A "service host process" is throttling the shit out of my Internet. I need help fixing this :( Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:52 PM PDT So since a couple of months ago there's a "windows service host process" that sometimes goes crazy with traffic and starts to throttle my connection. I know these process are fairly unoffensive and usually aren't a problem to nobody but I only have a 2mb Internet connection, everytime this mf hits my online gaming gets fuckity and I can't play :( At a time I found a solution: with Glasswire I could block everything but discord and PS4 Remote play (the two things I used to play). My PC thought it had no internet but these two programs behaved amazing and there was no lag spikes. I only had to disable the firewall to keep on with my normal life after I ended playing. But Glasswire trial ended and I really, really don't want to pay 30$ just for this :( Tried with other firewall apps (ZoneAlarm, Tinywall) to no avail, maybe I'm a bit stupid maybe they're really fucking counter intuitive compared to glasswire. Is there any way I can identify this problematic service and stop it, even if temporary when I want to play? thx. PS: There might of course be a probability that this is a malware. I'm not that versed on how to protecc my pc and I sometimes hang around at spooky sites. [link] [comments] |
After a successful RDC connection, Local User cannot log into or wake up Desktop Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:04 AM PDT Baffling thing today at work that I can't seem to find any clues on how to solve.
Genuinely have no idea what is going on here and has been happening for a while, but it used to work fine on Windows 10. Any ideas on how to solve this? [link] [comments] |

Why Microsoft won't ever improve regedit Posted: 30 Sep 2019 10:44 PM PDT Not here to discuss whether registry itself is a good or a bad idea, that's a totally different story Any Windows release you use, regedit remains the same ol app all the way from WinXP if not WinNT, with all those old inconsistencies. Dont have any hatred towards old software that works, however, if something's known to be problematic, why not to improve it? Here is something. Regedit is too simple of a program to have many problems. Yet why doesn't it refresh for changes automatically? Why doesn't it support tabs? Why there isn't a simple and straighforward way to open the registry directory you want from the command line (which turns out, I wasn't the only person ever bothered by that, https://superuser.com/questions/115854/open-registry-directly-to-a-given-key ). My beloved Nirsoft RegScanner went all the way as to emulate user's key opening and closing. Then there's import/export. You can export .txt , which is a bad idea (albeit never ever mentioned as such), modern .reg and 9x reg (what's the difference? Every time I bothered to compare these, the only difference ever was the header), and there is hive export, which is considered unorthodox. Is hive export faster i/o-wise than the .reg (since registry is a fs in itself)? And how do I ever defrag registry? Here is another issue. There is regedit, sure; but if you ever done CLI registry editing, you'd know there also is reg.exe . Their functionalities are slightly different, but reg.exe can do some stuff regedit can't , and vice versa. I take reg.exe was intended for automation, but if so, why regedit is intended to accept CLI commands, and can do stuff reg.exe can't ? Also is reg.exe faster than regedit.exe ? I just checked, and noticed there now is regedt32.exe , which just opens regedit . And the documentation also says it just is intended to open regedit. Oh man [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:57 PM PDT Hey guys. I was hoping someone could help me. Recently I've had horrible trouble with my laptop. Long story short I'm having "Reallocated Sectors Count" and "Current Pending Sector Count" issues so my hard drive is dying. I'm looking to replace my harddrive in my PC as a cheaper option than buying a new laptop entirely but I'm concerned about my OS. If I swap out my hard drive will I need to rebuy Windows 10 or will i be able to get Windows 10 on it another way? I've never done this type of thing before so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Two document folders (offline and OneDrive) Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:27 PM PDT So I just got a new computer, and everything seems to be running smoothly. However, I have one problem that I haven't had before. I am using OneDrive, and so obviously I am trying to sync what I need. But on my other computers I had an offline document folder, and a document folder in OneDrive. So stuff I really wanted to back-up I put in OneDrive, and stuff from random installs or so would just be put in the local documents folder. However, it's like I only have one document folder now - on OneDrive. This means, that many programs, games etc. have the document folder as a default folder for random stuff. So it just adds random stuff I don't want in my Onedrive almost every time I try to install something. It even tried to sync the Desktop folder to my OneDrive. So yeah, are there anything to do here ? So I can have my two folders once again, or...? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

C:\users\<username> file being opened on startup? Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:08 AM PDT For the past few times I've started up my computer, a popup dialog has appeared asking for which program to open a file with (the standard one you see if you try to open a file with no association) I had no clue what this was, so I picked a text editor to open this mysterious file with, and it's an installer log of some sort for Gitv2 which comes with Visual Studio. No idea why it's opening on startup. I went to task manager and checked which programs start on startup, and sure enough this file is in there (I had no clue these could even be just files...) https://i.imgur.com/4QICJVn.png Why the hell did it start doing this just recently? Has anyone else seen something similar to this? Here's the contents of the file for anyone curious: http://dpaste.com/1CTVV1G [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:14 AM PDT My desktop has been rendered unusable by my ssd running at 100% for no discernable reason. No task is running and consuming the disk space necessary, there's nowhere near enough read/write to cause this, my computer doesn't seem to have superfetch, i've toggled that setting on the ssd that's involved with that firmware bug, and disabling windows search didn't fix it either. I've also tried run a disk check, to no avail. Is my SSD just physically fucked? I'm getting no warnings or error messages at all, and I haven't downloaded anything disreputable. EDIT: Checked the SMART status and it all came up green. [link] [comments] |
Can't boot Windows 7 from CD anymore Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:02 AM PDT Hey guys, my PC is a bit broken right now, so I wanted to reinstall Windows 7. I last did this about a year ago, everything worked fine. As far as I remember I didn't even have to go to the BIOS, it just auto-booted from the CD. But this time the PC refuses to do just this. Here are the things I tried so far:
Basically whatever I try, the PC just boots up normally, ignoring my commands. Here I am now, having no more ideas what to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Tray program to select screen resolution? Posted: 01 Oct 2019 02:29 AM PDT Is there any apps you would recommend that provides a system tray icon to quickly select different screen resolutions? I'm using a surface pro and playing a game that only uses the screen resolution so I would like to have a quick access menu for me both starting and closing the game. I know intel used to provide a utility for their graphics cards but it's been that long I'm not sure what software fits the bill now. Bonus points if I can get a program that I can integrate into a batch script! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:57 AM PDT Hello everyone! I recently finished builing my first pc and have now realized that I forgot to actually purchase a Windows 10 key. Before I do this, I would like to get a general consensus on the absurdely cheap keys which are sold on Amazon and Ebay for as low as 2 Euros. I am fairly sure that those can't be entirely legal, right? However, most of those sellers have overwhelmingly positive reviews. So, is there any real downside to purchasing a cheap key instead of buying it from Microsoft themselves, except maybe no customer support? I apologize that this might be a very entry level question, but I have never done this before and would like to get a second (third, fourth..) opinion before buying something that is malware or that simply doesn't work. Thank you in advance and have a wonderful day! [link] [comments] |
