Building PC for husband, would like a second set of eyes on what I have picked out.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:13 AM PDT

Hi, like the title says I am building a PC for my husband. It has been a loooong time since he had an upgrade and he is due for one.

Here is what I am thinking for parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BCkNkd

Anything you would change? Just want to make sure I am not missing anything.

He loves the case and I chose that particular Noctua cooler because I like the chromax customization options and it doesn't seem to overwhelm the case like a lot of huge ass coolers out there do. I don't think he will do a lot of overclocking, still seems to get good ratings for cooling.

We're sticking with the i7, considered AMD but he is a big fan of Intel and we don't mind spending a bit of extra $ on it.

You also may have noticed no video card, SSD, power supply, we already have the PSU/SSD and video card is coming with my next paycheck. :) If you have any suggestions on the video card by the way, let me know! I'm thinking a 2070 super, but which one specifically?

    Thanks a lot!

P.S. I am also going to add 2 more Aer fans to the case, one at the back and one at the top but I do not have that listed.

    4790k Worth Upgrading Yet?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 01:44 PM PDT

I've had my 4790k for some time now and I am wondering if it would be worth the upgrade to the newest consumer chipset from intel. I am wondering if it would be worth it considering the upgrade from DDR3 to 4 alone. I definitely didn't win the sil. lotto with this chip, I usually run it around 4.5-4.6ghz. I am not opposed to AMD, but my brand loyalty is something hard to shake.

    Thanks.

Newly built AMD Gaming Rig is hanging on Restarts and Shutdowns. Please advise.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 01:14 PM PDT

Parts listed here. Text Doc of HWiNFO64 PC Spec sheet

Problem: When I restart or shutdown my computer everything runs smoothly. The screen goes to black as expected but the process hangs and the restart/shutdown does not complete. I have been flipping the PSU switch off and then on again followed by pressing the power button on the front of my case in order to power my PC back on.

I have disabled fast start up. This is a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro as of 08/30/19. I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this matter.

Photo of PC during normal operation

Second photo of PC during normal operation

Notice the rainbow pattern on the fans. This pattern is only on display when Corsair iCue is in operation.

Photo of PC during Restart Hang up

Notice the default Corsair Fan color/pattern. Indicating that iCue is no longer in operation which tells me the PC is mostly shutdown at this point.

Photo of black monitor screen during hang up

This is my first AMD PC. I have previously been 100% Intel/nVidia.

Help for choosing a budget SSD! Crucial MX500 vs Adata XPG SX6000 Pro

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 02:06 PM PDT

I'm looking for a SSD for my new rig. I want it to be 512GB. My budget is around 80USD. I'm accepting suggestions!

I'm eyeing the Crucial MX500 and the Adata XPG SX6000 Pro, both 512GB. The former's a SATA SSD, the latter is NVMe. They're almost the same price here. Which one do you recommend from the two? If there is a benchmark including both of these, if so can you share it?

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for internet for my new apartment but don't know how to go about it

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 02:29 PM PDT

I'm looking to get xfinity. because that's what my area uses. I live with my girlfriend so it'll just be my desktop which will use ethernet for gaming, her macbook, our two phones, and a smart LG TV. And maybe a ps4 in the future, all using Wi-fi.

I just don't know what speeds I need to ensure low latency/low ping for online games and a fast enough download speed. What is the standard Mbps/MBps that's good for most gamers?

I'm also on a somewhat tight budget atm but that might change. I don't know what a reasonable price is for internet so I can't say an exact budget. Maybe no more than $80 per month?

The room has option for dsl and cable. Which is better for what I'm looking for? Can I use a modem that has both so I can test both setups?

    RTX 2060S or RX 5700XT(reference) for 1440p?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:30 PM PDT

    Hi!

So, today's my birthday, and I'm going to buy a gaming PC (duh)

My budget allows me to buy an RTX 2060S or an RX 5700XT (the reference model, in México there's no custom models yet).

I've watched a lot of videos, and I see the RX has slightly better performance on gaming, but I am worried about the noise and heat from the reference model. And the Ray tracing from the 2060s seems cool.

    Which card should I buy?
    Thanks in advance :)

    HDD causing system stutter

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:28 AM PDT

Hello, i have a problem with my build, when my HDD is plugged in it causes my entire computer to stutter every minute or so, no matter if i'm playing games or just writing an email.

My OS is installed on an SSD, and when i unplug the HDD and use only the SSD the system runs fine. I'd be tempted to say that the problem is that my HDD is faulty but i've already tried replacing it and the problem is still here even with a different HDD, it seems that my pc somehow doesn't like having any HDDs plugged in at all.

I've tried changing the SATA cable, but it didn't fix it.

I tried changing my motherboard and cpu (My previous ones were a B450M DS3H MOBO and Ryzen 5 2600 CPU) but that didn't fix it.

    These are my current components:

    SSD: Kingdian S280 120gb

    HDD: Seagate ST1000DM010 1TB 7.200 rpm

    GPU: RX580

    CPU: intel i5 9400f

    MOBO: prime b360m-k

    RAM: 2x4gb DDR4 HyperX FURY HX426C15FBK2

Do you have any idea of how i could fix this? I really don't want the "solution" to be "just buy one big ssd and store everything in there"

    Thank you

Upgrade from 2600 to 3600 underwhelming?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:17 PM PDT

When I built my computer back in February, I knew that Ryzen 3000 would be coming out soon and I planned to upgrade when that happened. In the meantime I picked up a 2600 and a Strix B450-f, which I planned to replace with a better x570 setup when that became available. I got an RTX 2070 before super was a thing, and I game at 1440p 144hz. I currently get around 100fps in most games and usually 144 in esports like R6 Siege and League.

Yesterday I went to MicroCenter and got a 3600 and the Gigabyte x570 Elite for about $400 together. I ran a bunch of benchmarks last night and did the upgrade this morning, and after playing a bit I'm getting a lot of buyer's remorse. Online benchmarks were predicting a bigger difference than I'm experiencing in the games I play. My Time Spy went up only 200 points and Overwatch still seems to struggle to get 144 fps on ultra. Monster Hunter went from 60fps to 70, and FFXIV is still stuck around 100 in highly populated areas. R6 is usually pinned at my frame cap except during explosions, which is when I need the best reaction time.

I might just be learning a really obvious lesson about why people don't upgrade every 6 months, but it's feeling like I wasted my money on a tiny upgrade. Everyone talked about how 3600 blows 2600 out of the water but that isn't what I'm feeling. Overclocking on the 3000 series makes no difference either without insane RAM so I'm thinking about returning the upgrades and waiting for something else.

Can someone tell me if my experience is to be expected from an upgrade like this? I asked on the daily thread a while ago if this was a good idea and a lot of people said yes, but maybe that just meant it isn't a strictly BAD idea. I don't know where else to upgrade my rig without spending $1300 on a 2080ti, so maybe I'm just stuck here until 2020.

Looking to Upgrade Old PC for New Games

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:01 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am a filthy casual looking to upgrade my old PC. I do not need the latest and greatest equipment or the ability to play on ultra-high settings. I would just like to be able to play new games smoothly on high-ish settings. I would like to keep the costs down to about $500 (even lower, if possible) and buy only that which is necessary.

    My current specs are:

    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750
    • AMD FX(tm)-8320 8-Core, 3.50 GHz
    • GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3
    • 8GB RAM
    • 400W PSU

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

    Motherboard or PSU?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:04 AM PDT

    Hi Guys,

So I decided to build a PC

I managed to order all the parts to the PC, but when I actually built the PC I had troubles with running the BIOS. My CPU was initially not compatible with my motherboard but I used the flashback feature on my motherboard to update my BIOS so that the CPU is compatible with the motherboard. Once this was done I also reset the CMOS (by taking the battery out, waiting 3 minutes and then putting it back in).

The main problem I am encountering is that within moments of turning my PC, on it turns off within 2 minutes. This means that by the time I go to the BIOS menu the PC switches off and my monitor screen shuts down. It seems as though there is a correlation between my PSU and my PC turning off. If I turn the PSU off for longer, than my PC runs for a little longer. If I try to turn my PC on again straight after it turns off it doesn't work. My PC is not able to run for more than 2 minutes before shutting off completely.

It's almost as though my PC must take breaks in between powering it on and off and it is not consistent. I am unsure if this is a setting that has been pre installed into the motherboard or whether this is an issue regarding cables or one of my components.

    Here are my specs:

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/qMZ2KB

Is it the motherboard or the PSU?

    Thanks.

Workstation Part Check, NH-D15 sourcing issues

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:24 PM PDT

I went with Intel because I like to play with microarchitectural vulnerabilities. I plan on using this computer for work, sometimes running a VM or two, basic modeling objects for objects to 3d-print, and perhaps some light gaming such as Kerbal Space Program or Civilization. My budget limit is $2000, but I can score points with the wife if I come in under.

I have been having trouble finding a Noctua NH-D15. My current options seem to be: 1. Pay $140 for an $85 part from European sites 2. Buy the AM4-special variant (is it even compatible?) 3. Wait and hope for it to show up in stock (how long?) 4. Buy another part, such as NH-D14 or NH-D15S?

What should I do for the cooler? Do the other parts look reasonable?

    Is this PSU ok?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 02:18 PM PDT

    Hello there. (Again)

Well, I just checked the PSU that I have in my actual PC and it's a SOLYTECH AL-500EXP (500w). I couldn't find any info about this PSU. Well my question is the next one...

Will this PSU be good for this specs? (Click the link at the end to see the specs and a bit of info from the psu)

I couldn't find a way to add 2 more fans from the Case but I think it won't cause any trouble or major changes to the wattage.

The only thing I will upgrade it will the RAM and the GPU from a 1060 to a 2060 super.

GPU sparked and the whole case smelt of electric burn, but the rest seems to be working fine, what to check?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 02:18 PM PDT

My PC shut off while I was playing game, and I heard the power switch sound. I crawled down and check the power bar, but it wasn't tripped so I turned the machine back on and that's when I noticed the video card sparks and the PC shut off immediately.

I turned off all power, open the case (which was filled with electric burn smell by now), pulled out the card, plug monitors into the motherboard, and restarted it.

Now there's a gaping hole where the card was, butthe machine started up and is running fine. Still, I don't know if there may have been any other damage. What should I check?

    Specs:

    • Intel 6600k.
    • 16GB G.Skill Ram 3200MHz.
    • Asus Z-170A mobo.
    • EVGA 650 P2 power supply.

And the star of the show: EVGA 1070 FTW.

    Kickstarting a waterpump

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 09:18 AM PDT

    Hi,

my waterpump passed out a few bootups so i tried to figure out why.

I came to a point where i tried to supply the pump alone with its needed 12V power but nothing happened.

However supplying the pump with power and kick starting the impeller makes it work totally fine.

    Can I somehow repair this?

Connecting 3 Corsair 120 fans to an Asus Prime z390-a Mobo

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 02:11 PM PDT

Sorry I am asking a ton of questions today.

I think I have my Corsair RGB fans installed correctly, everything except for hooking them up to the MOBO. How am I supposed to hook them in -- I don't understand the mobo schematic in the instructions. There are

    CPU_OPT, CPU_FAN, AIO_PUMP,CHA_FAN1,EXT_FAN,CHA_FAN2,W_PUMP+,and M.2_FAN.

headers. Which can I plug my 3 cables from the fans into?

Also I have 3 other fans (non rbg) that I am going to use to pull air into the case from the bottom, each probably with their own connectors. How do I hook all this in?

    Thanks

I've took some various advices on parts, including from you guys.

You can somewhat overlook the prices shown, as im from europe (Portugal) which means some parts are cheaper and some others are (alot more) expensive.

For my Graphics Card, as of now the 2070 and Super 2070 Only differ for about 10€. So the Super instead of the regular one is def. a possiblity.

This pc will be used for everything, especially gaming.

How does it look? I'm still on the verge about this case, do you guys recommend any others?
