    External HDD problem

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:55 PM PDT

So this hard disk got corrupt but I managed to recover most of it. The problem is whenever it's plugged in, it makes the pc super slow, therefore not allowing me to format it either. Any solution to this?

Thinking of buying the new Dell Inspiron 15 7591...

Any opinions/review/feedback on that model? Or any alternatives for the same price? My use would be mostly programming and some light gaming.

Is there a such thing as a laptop that stays cool under load?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:41 PM PDT

That is what I am after. It makes no sense to have something called a "laptop" when you put it in your lap it burns your legs when doing any kind of work.

So is there a laptop that actually remains cool at all times while sitting in your lap?

    SSD or SSD + HDD?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:49 AM PDT

Which would people recommend is better? Getting a 512GB SSD, or having a 256GB SSD and a HDD(maybe 500GB)? I'm talking in terms of speed here and not so much storage.

Should I buy a laptop with an i5 or even i7 intelCore processor for studying/watching videos, and a light photoshop use?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:29 PM PDT

Pretty much everything in the title. I'm thinking about getting one of those so my laptop could stay relevant in the future, and I could keep it longer. Is that a good thinking?

Cheap laptop for civil engineering software

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:12 PM PDT

Title says it all. Ideally looking to spend less than $500 on a laptop for software like visual analysis. I don't need anything great as I already have a MacBook I use for other stuff but some software isn't supported on Mac that I need for class.

Is there any way I can switch the use of the Fn key?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:30 AM PDT

like normaly if I wanted to increase the volume or the brightness or go to fullscreen I would press the f5 f3 or f11 keys but If im playing a game and there would be a button prompt to press the f3 key I would have to press Fn and THEN f3 to do it. So is here any option so that if I had to change the brightness I would have to press the Fn key but in a game there would be no need for it? I am on an HP laptop.

Good laptops with 1080/2070 or better?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:27 AM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop with the following requirements

    • GTX 1080, RTX 2070, whatever an AMD equivalent is, or better (Could settle for 1660ti)
    • Doesn't look like total shit (not 800 kilograms and doesn't have a "gamer" aesthetic)

In my limited search, I've liked the Gigabyte Aero 15 and ASUS Strix Scar III (especially because of their 240 hz screens and Thunderbolt 3), but I've barely had any time to research, and I don't want to miss anything better in price.

Any recommendations of other laptops to check out?

Very quick question about Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:25 AM PDT

On Dells website, you can select XPS 13 and there's an option at the top that says 13 and New 13 but they don't actually explain the difference between them.

I can see the generation processor is different but what else am I missing? Which one is better? It looks like the 13 (not "new 13") has slightly better graphics and that's about it?

Your view on Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB) - Newest Version, Platinum?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:02 AM PDT

Anyone here bought from 3C Parts before? They have really good prices for chargers but the website looks a little fishy.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 07:10 AM PDT

I wanna get the official Surface pro 5 charger and I can get it for £24.50 on there, just seems a little good to be true. I bought a 3rd party one but it causes my keypad not to work.

How can I activate Wake-On-Lan on my Huawei Matebook D?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:52 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I have the Ryzen version of the Huawei Matebook D which has an Intel AC 8265 card.

The card supports Wake-On-Lan, which I've activated in the Power Management tab of its properties in Device Manager.

I checked in BIOS and the laptop supports wakeup from "other sources", which I assume means WOL.

I've added the laptop's MAC address in my Asus AC68 router and a static ip address for good measure.

I've also tried disabling the fast startup, as described here (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2776718/wake-on-lan-wol-behavior-in-windows-8-windows-8-1-and-windows-10).

Unfortunately the laptop will not start if switched off, or even when in sleep.

    Could someone please help?

    Thanks

Would this laptop be worth purchasing?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:45 AM PDT

    Good day everyone!

I'm in the market for a new laptop and was interested in a few Asus laptops. I'd be using them for basic use such as YouTube, Netflix, etc and for school. Not going to be gaming on it.

This laptop was suggested to me by a friend and I'm just wondering if it's worth the $899 CAD price point (onsale)

Hesitating between a ThinkPad and a Pavilion

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 09:10 AM PDT

    Hello,

The HP dv9000 of my dad finally died a few days ago, after 10+ years of service, and now i'm searching a new one to replace it. I found some that may be interesting, but i don't know what to choose and need a little help.

The laptops that i've seen are the HP 15-da1027nf and the ThinkPad L590/E590.

I'm looking for a laptop that will last long, and have decent performance and battery life (it will be mainly used for basic tasks, so no need for a huge beast).

Do you have any advice about what i should choose ?

    Thank you very much
