Downloaded a Trojan virus. Windows Defender removed it. How can I double check?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 02:26 PM PDT

Hello everyone. Like an idiot I accidentally downloaded a Trojan virus while trying to get a game emulator. The download was taking suspiciously long, so I ran a virus scan in Windows 10. It found a Trojan, and I attempted to remove it. It took many tries, as the computer was randomly shutting off, going dark, beeping, and removing actions. I disconnected from the internet and spent hours trying to fix this.

Eventually Windows said the virus had been removed, and that another identical virus with identical folder locations had been abandoned. The virus was called Win32/FueryC!cl

Am I safe now, or is there another way I can make certain the virus is gone? What if it is still there, and Windows Defender can't detect it? Thank you for your help.

    Blocking spam voicemails

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 03:59 AM PDT

I was getting multiple calls from an automated service over the last week, it calls 5-6 times a day saying "were calling to rate your energy company and will call you back soon".

I blocked the number on the first day, but when you don't answer it leaves a 4 minute voicemail just repeating the same thing over and over, and apparently blocked numbers can still leave voicemails.

I've recieved 27 voicemails so far from this same thing, how do I stop them?

    audio driver sleeping

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 03:38 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've had this problem since i bought this pc (HP OMEN 15, windows 10) a few weeks ago; when i play a youtube video, the sound only starts working after a few seconds. After a little googling and looking on my pc i've come to the conclusion that my realtek audio driver goes into "sleep" mode after a few seconds of not playing anything. When i'm playing videogames i don't have that problem because it's constantly playing. Does anyone have a fix for this? Thank you very much!

    CPU overheating, but not overheating.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:44 AM PDT

Recently built a new gaming PC, originally the rbg lights were not working, even though they were plugged in correctly.

Everything else was working as normal

Today I turn it on and it says the CPU is overheating, and the rbg lights are on.

I reapplied thermal paste, and then removed rbg lights cable and now it's fine..

    Any ideas on what happened

Small form factor PC won't open any games?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 09:02 PM PDT

Here are the specs of a SFF pc I made for playing games on the couch with a controller, ect. It's running a fully updated windows 10 pro. Has the newest nvida drivers 436.15.

    CPU GPU RAM
    i5 3740 GTX Gt 1030 12GB DDR3 Ram.

Several games I try to open I get Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library errors. There error code is R6025 - pure vital function call. This is trying Bioshock remastered off of steam, I've also tried Dishonered, and Bioshock 2 remasterd, and Bioshock infinite and they all produce similar error codes.

What I've tried: Reinstalling windows 10, one version older of nvidia drivers, I've installed every Microsoft visual c++ think I could find through google. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

side note: I can play a few other games, rocket league works great. So does A Hat in Time.

I need some serious help I think my phone has been bugged.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:34 PM PDT

Recently I have been noticing some security issues on different apps on my phone, it started with snapchat then instagram then spotify, and some google issues. The first was snapchat I got an email about some login attempts at different IP's (none even close to me). Then when i logged on to instagram it said there was a suspicous login attempt from Florida. Google showed me an unknown login from New York (We hate on the security alerts but it may have saved my *ss). The strangest has been spotify. Over the last couple of weeks I have been logged out of my spotify account and have had to log back in and nothing seemed different when I did. After a while I was logged out more often than the day before until finally I was not able to log back in. It took a few hours to be able to get my password changed and my account back. This is where it gets weird. I had been recieving emails from spotify in different languages while i was having the issues. When i got back on Spotify it said I had recently played songs I had never even heard of. They were all weird Mexican songs. I dont know why this is happening. I use different passwords for everything and never click save password. I'm worried about possibly having malware or one of those virus that tracks what keys you press. This has been happening on my Android Phone (LG G6). Please someone help me figure out wus going on, or help me secure my information.

    Beeping sound from my laptop

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:53 AM PDT

My laptop is a pretty old model. Its a dell N5110. I've had it since 2012 and the keyboard was spoiled ages ago. I've always used an external keyboard. I only use it for browsing but today i turned it on and there was a really loud beeping noise. Once it boots into windows the sound becomes barely audible but its definitely still there. I read that this happens due to a hardware short but what could it be? I've already removed the battery and the keyboard but the beeping is still there.

New PC randomly crashes. $5 reward if you can solve this.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:43 AM PDT

Got bored of GTAV randomly crashing, or SWBF2 forcequitting while in-game, so I've built a new PC.

Specs: Ryzen 5 2600 ASUS B450-F Crucial Ballistix 3000Mhz CL15 CM MWE K550 550W HW from old PC: ASUS RX470 Kingston 120GB SSD Random 1 TB HDD

Then, I turn it on, install every driver, update... and it crashey while loading SWBF2.

No BSOD, the PC just turns off, while the keyboard , fans are still lit up. In this state you can't even turn on the PC, it is just stuck.

Now, I've been stress-testing the CPU and GPU and there were no problems.

But I've noticed that whenever playing a game, or running a benchmark, there was a static noise coming from my gpu, from the I/O part.

I've pulled the DP cable out, and the system crashed the same way it usually does.

If I pull it out while there is no buzzing sound, the system doesn't crash.

    What's this?

Just an additional info: it crashed like this when I was on my old PC, especially in GTA 5. Back then after the crash there was a strong buzzing noise coming thru my headphones, but other than that the same.

    Sooo... is my GPU faulty?

Help accessing files off old laptop HDD.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:36 AM PDT

I spilled a big ol' jug of water on my Windows 7 Sony Vaio laptop a while back, and have since bought a new computer (Lenovo, running W10)

The hard drive from said laptop is intact, and I've purchased a cable that connects the hard drive directly through USB to the new computer.

However, the drive shows up, and is inaccessible due to permissions.

How can I access my old files to move them around?

Do I need to turn the new hard drive to a slave through a boot menu, or is there a way within windows I can do it?

PC sometimes doesn't turn on unless PSU is switched off for 30+ seconds.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:31 AM PDT

Some system specs: Asus x99-A motherboard, i7 5820k, 980ti (Asus STRIX), Seasonic PSU, Fractal Design Define R5 case (PCGH Edition, but differences are largely cosmetic). The machine is a little less than four years old.

The issue: Two weeks ago I tried to turn on the machine by pressing the case's power button. There was a quiet "zip" sound, like a high-pitched click, but the computer didn't start. I opened it up to see if there were any obvious issues like a loose cable and noticed the LED on the motherboard and the network LED were on, which gave me the idea to turn off the PSU's power switch for a minute. After turning it on again, the computer started up correctly when I pressed the on/off switch on the top of the case. Everything worked fine until yesterday and today, where the same thing happened. Turning off PSU power for 30+ seconds "fixed" it again, though today it took two tries. No number of button pushes worked without turning off/on the PSU, so this seems related.

What could cause this problem and how would I go about fixing it? There are no problems when the computer is running. No outages or other troubles.

If I can provide additional information, please let me know. Thanks for any input!

MSI problem with Ableton. "Error from reading file"

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:14 AM PDT

I've been 2 days straight trying to solve this problem. I'm trying to install Ableton, but it stops mid-way because it says "error from reading file..." And it says it can't read a random file from the folder like a .js or a PNG

    Things I've tried:
    -Change the file location
-Change the temp file properties (read, write, etc...) -Change the Ableton files to read and write (it prohibited to change that property of some of the files for some reason)

I hope you can help me!!!

    gttx 1080 cooler swap

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:10 AM PDT

I have just bought the EVGA 1080 SC cooler off of eBay, I currently have the Asus turbo 1080 I took my graphics card apart last night to my surprise it didn't fit, I was expecting to make it fit I'm gonna have to Dremel into the heat sink and also the contact plate, this is exemplary DIY and I can't find anyone who has done this before. I also wanted to know if I leave one of the connectors unplugged from the PCB (because there isn't anywhere to plug it in) would it still work fine the one i would leave unplugged would be the one for the led on the side. is it worth doing this?

I’m making an app for my senior project, but have no coding experience nor experience in making an app. Is this too ambitious?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:07 AM PDT

So me and a friend were paired to 'solve a problem' for our senior project where we work on it in class everyday and outside of school if need be. The problem we have is when one may forget to plan accordingly for the day or for events you're going to.

Our current idea is to create a phone app that combines features of a weather app, calendar app, and reminder app. It will send notifications on the weather each day, as well as how to prepare for said weather. It may also send small reminders such as 'don't forget your wallet' so on and so forth. We'd also like to input traffic into the app to so the app could notify you if traffic is especially bad along your typical routes. Another feature we want is for you to put events or places you're going to in the future, and it will send you reminders about them, and the day of, it will send you a weather/traffic report around the area so you can prepare as necessary.

That's been our idea for the past week now. We haven't done much research on the logistics of how it will all work, and the more I think about it the more overly-ambitious it sounds. There seems to be some app-building programs to pay for, but even then, I'm not sure how legitimate they are or how well our idea would integrate with these programs.

Like I said before, my partner and I have no coding experience whatsoever. I think we'd have to rely on programs already out there.

Another issue we'll encounter is just how we'll get weather and traffic data. I have no clue if we can even attain such data for our own usage, let alone program an app to work around it.

Deadline for the project is around March.

So is this too ambitious? Should I scrap some ideas or even the whole idea altogether? Is this even the right subreddit to ask this? We'll see.

TL;DR A friend and I are making an app that uses weather, reminder, and traffic features and we have no experience at all in coding or making an app. Is this possible?

Sudden loss of display that I now can't get back at all.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 04:06 AM PDT

So, I wasn't doing anything stressful to the PC, but suddenly the display cuts out. I force shut down the PC and when I restarted it I'm still not getting an output to the monitor. Everything else looks as if it's starting fine, I'm not getting any EZ Debug LEDs and the graphics card has power.

Here's what I'm using: Ryzen 3700X MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX ASUS Expedition 1060 OC Corsair Vengance LPX 16GB Corsair CX600 Corsair Force MP510 M.2 SSD (the boot drive) Seagate Barracuda

All the parts are almost brand new except the PSU and the HDD. I've tried with my old GPU and had the same issue, as well as with a different monitor and HDMI cable. I've also tried connecting the monitor to the HDMI port in the motherboard. I've also tried clearing CMOS. My only observations now are that sometimes, the GPU fans stop spinning, but I guess this is just because it isn't hot? Also, the lights come on in my mouse but not on my keyboard, so I'm lead to believe I have either a faulty motherboard, or bad graphics card drivers.

Stream YouTube / Netflix from iPhone, using mobile data, to Chromecast equipped TV, without having a router at home?

    Browsers will not recognize webcam

    Posted: 03 Sep 2019 12:08 AM PDT

Hey there, so my built in webcam on my mid 2014 Macbook Pro will not work in Chrome, Safari or Firefox but I know the camera itself is fine and it works in Photobooth and Skype. But on websites I get a message like: Requested device not found. It has previously worked in browsers with no problems so I'm confused as to how to fix this. I've checked the permissions for these sites and set them to allow for Camera, Mic and Flash. I updated my computer software. Browsers are up to date. Nothing seems to work and it's driving me nuts. Help please?
