Heading into college, need a laptop for all 4 years, LIGHT gaming, and good battery life

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:28 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, US (willing to pay the premium for a device that will last longer)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. no 2 in 1, unless it manages to not make sacrifices from a typical ultrabook. Decent battery life is nice, but I will have access to outlets all day.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Prefer a thinner design, but weight isn't an issue.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Only ever used windows, but learning macOS isn't out of the question, if there's a compelling argument for a macbook

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13", maybe 15" if the battery life is not impacted greatly

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light games, and media (youtube, twitch, netflix ....), but mostly school-related programs, minus any engineering or CS stuff

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Civ 5, Minecraft, and LoL - I play in low settings already, would like at least 40 FPS in LoL

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Of the above, build quality is by far the most important to me, as I don't want to be buying another laptop before I graduate. I'm not picky about the keyboard at all. I've gone this long w/o touchscreen, so it isn't a necessity. Good IO is important as well, and would like at least 2 USB-C, with at least one being Thunderbolt 3, and I already have a dongle with HDMI, ethernet, and more USB ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I feel like the 2019 XPS 13 and 2019 Razer stealth are my best options, especially considering the $300+ discount on the stealth models at the moment. I'm probably getting an external GPU in the next year or two, so strong gaming performance isn't a massive selling point. I'm terrible at making decisions so I'm hoping you all can help me out here.

Thank you all very much in advance!

Travel a ton for work need advice for a gaming laptop between $2K-3200 USD.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:27 AM PDT

This is my first ever reddit post, so greetings all! Forgive my lack of reddiquette. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $2000 - $3200 USD Willing to spend more if the specs check out. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I'm going for best specs for the money * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I have no problem lugging around a heavy laptop between job sites * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** No less than 17 inches, this is non-negotiable * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** This laptops sole purpose is to play games at a decent resolution and frame rate for the next few years. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Must be able to play everything from Far Cry 5 to Hearthstone, in austere environments, with sub par internet bandwidth. (bonus points if it can handle Star Citizen like the streamers) * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A huge emphasis on build quality due to how much I travel, and where I go. And must have dual drives. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** My job has sent me everywhere from Antarctica to Afghanistan and everywhere in between, I'm on the road 300+ days a year, which means my laptop is my lifeline to the outside world, and primary way I play my games. Durability is of the upmost paramount due to the amount I travel, sometimes my bag I carry it in gets dropped on the ground because I've been traveling 20+ hours and I'm exhausted. With that being said I'm willing to pony up up to $3000 USD for a solid gaming laptop that allows me to play everything that comes out at an acceptable resolution. Edit added req's for dual hard drives. 1 must be an m.2 sata, the other a standard hdd.

Thoughts on Dell G5 Series 15 Laptop for University

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:00 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Im looking to buy a laptop for University and I intend on gaming maximum 2 hours a day on games such as Apex, Witcher 3 at 60 fps on medium/high settings. Im heavily leaning towards this laptop https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/gaming-and-games/dell-g5-15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5587-laptop/cn55822 , mainly because of reviews I have seen from youtubers such as Dave Lee, Linus.. Plus I like the idea of Dell premium support+ onsite service.

I intend on using it for 4+ years at least and plan to be careful i.e. not around food and drinks, cleaning fans every 1.5 weeks, not using it on surfaces that causes heat to build up etc. However, I would appreciate any and all advice regarding the viability of this purchase in terms of Battery life, longevity, thermals and overall value for money.

It will be my first laptop and so I intend on wanting to make the best purchase. If there are any other alternatives that you may know of under £1000, please let me know.

    Thank you

    Architecture student looking for laptop

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 02:58 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm aiming at around $700-800, but depending on the laptop I could probably go as high as $1000.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I have some basic requirements (included below), but as long as those are filled, good battery life is highest on my priority list.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The lighter the better, since I'll be carrying it around most of the time, probably with a lot of books. Thinness isn't a priority.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm most used to Windows, and the programs I want can run there, so that's a good start. But I'm open to trying a new OS if neccessary.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I must be able to run Autodesk AutoCAD as well as the Adobe suite. If it's strong enough to run Rhino, that would be great, but I'm not sure if it's possible to get that with my budget.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Probably some steam games - currently mostly playing Battleblock Theatre, Bastion, and Jackbox - and as long as they don't lag, I'm happy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is always nice... but no requirements. HOWEVER, I have been considering having a tough screen with a pen, for quick sketches and drawing, notetaking and such. I have no experience with that however, so I have no idea if it's an useful addition or just a gimmick. Input on this is very welcome!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'll try to answer all your questions, but have no knowledge on any computer stuff, so I'll have to google everything to know what you are asking for.

    Thank you!

    Matebook D w/ AMD Ryzen or Matebook X w/ i5 7200u?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 02:29 AM PDT

    Hello folks.

I'm due to purchasing a new laptop, which shall be useful for university related activities such a document editing and MS office general use and photo editing with Adobe PS, Lightroom and other dedicated software.

I was looking for a sturdy, light and portable laptop with a monitor with great colour accuracy, snappy performance, decent battery life (even moderate is OK, I'm not a heavy user). I've read the Matebook X (2017 model) falls a bit behind in terms of connectivity, as many useful ports have been sacrificed for the sleek and minimal thickness of the device. However it comes with an adaptor for USB-A/VGA/HDMI/LAN.

A matebook D with Ryzen costs around €550 on Amazon.

I've got offered a used Matebook X i5 7200u with 1 month warranty left for the same price.

Hard decision, could you please give your 2 cents on regards? Thanks!

    HP Spectre or MSI GS65

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 02:02 AM PDT

Hello! I just bought the MSI GS65 and I'm starting to have buyers remorse because I already have a gaming desktop and I don't want battery life to be an issue, I'm wondering if I really need a gaming laptop since I will have my desktop with me in college.

This laptop will mainly be used for college, I am majoring in computer science. I was looking at the HP Spectre since they have good battery life and high specs. The Spectre is $60 more than what I paid for the MSI.

    Need a laptop for college! Romania, 1980x1080, 5000 lei ( ~1050 euro)

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 01:22 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My total budget is 5000 lei ( around 1050 euros). Country is Romania. I do not want to spend more than the aforementioned sum.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I do not really know what is a 2-1 laptop but I don't really need this feature. A good battery life is preferable. Should be able to use my laptop during classes without needing to plug my charger in.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is irrelevant and so is thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Do not have a preference. It may as well be without any OS. I can install the OS myself.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Sometime I watch tv show or movies and I would like to watch them in hd. So I guess the laptop should support a 1980x1080 screen size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No photo or video editing but I plan on gaming and making my own games so I will try to work with graphics. From what I understand I will use CAD. I will plan to play some recent games which require at least 8gb of ram.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I do not have any games I plan to play right now. But I will want to try the newest games and I would want to play them at the highest quality if possible. If maximum quility is now achievable because of budget reasons and at least medium quality.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like the keyboard to have a numpad if possible. I would also like the laptop to not overheat and to last for at least 3-4 years (if not more). I hope that there still are some laptops that are durable.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I already searched for laptops but I do now know if the brands are any good. I hope you can suggest some laptops that will last me awhile. I needed a lot of time to gather this money. And the budget of ~1050 euro should include transportation if it is not free. I do not know why but I would prefer to have 16 gb of ram. Other than that I trust you judgement and hope you can help me. As you can see I am not really familiar with the hardware stuff so I am a bit scared of spending so much money. That is why I need your help.

    Lenovo Y540 v. Acer Predator Helios 300 v. Dell G5 5590 (a bit urgent)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:02 PM PDT

Okay y'all so I'm in a bit of a pickle rn. So after months of doing research and with Student Sales going on right now, these are the three laptops I'm looking at the hardest. The Lenovo Y540 (either the 9750H 1660ti Model or the RTX 2060 Model), the ever so talked about Acer Predator Helios 300 (2019) or the Dell G5 5590 (I talked to Walmart Support and the refresh rate is indeed 144 hz). I have not a lot of time since the Lenovo sale ends tomorrow so which one should it be reddit.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2 in 1, I will be able to keep it plugged in charging at all times so battery life isnt very important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 in. I would prefer closer to 13.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and serving the web. Classic WoW, borderlands 3, and minecraft lol

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming and serving the web. Classic WoW, borderlands 3, and minecraft. I would prefer to get something basically as powerful as possible so I don't have to update it for 2-3 years.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I wouldnt mind being able to remove the battery to reduce the heat while gaming (I think this is a thing). Not a requirement.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will be a gaming laptop that I use with a mouse while in my tractor while away from my home PC.

College student, laptop not chromebook, 700 to 750 in spendage, US

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 700 to 750 and US
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't want a touchscreen or a flip keyboard, just a laptop that's gonna last at least 4ish years and a battery life of 8 hours or more. I'm not using it for gaming, just writing papers and online classes.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like to keep it under 6ish pounds if I can. I don't want a bulky laptop.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, please.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Maybe around 12in or a little bigger. I don't want the screen/ keyboard so small that it's impossible to type comfortably.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Pretty much just Office stuff, word, powerpoint, etc. spotify, youtube.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touchscreen. I'd really prefer if the laptop didn't sound like a jet engine after an hour, that would be cool. It would also be pretty cool if it didn't slow to a stopping point if I have more than one thing going at once. If I could get some space to store things, if not but at least it comes with an extra sd storage slot, that would work too.

Looking for a laptop for multiple uses (gaming, editing, programming, etc)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:55 PM PDT

    Hi all!

So I'm looking for a laptop that'll last me a while. Here's some of the things that I would like for it to be able to do:

-Gaming: I used to be active gamer (LoL, ffxiv, destiny, and a shit ton of mmorpg's) but I'm in my last year of uni and am working an internship + job so I've taken a huge step back. I play every now and then and download a indie games from steam when I get the chance. And, I sometime hook up my ps4 for remote play when I don't have access to a tv. I'd like something that can handle these things, and more if I decide to get back into gaming again.

-Video Editing: I do a lot of editing on the side as a hobby and as a side gig. I use mostly sony vegas pro and after effects. I'd like something that'll let me pre-render my work a bit faster (especially if they're open simultaneously). My current desktop is pretty old and half the time just to precompose or just pre render a section to check it out..

-music editing/composing: audacity, sibelius, museScore, Finale

programming- I do some coding and data manipulation, but not extremely so because I'm still learning (python, sql, r)

-be able to use visualisation tools like power BI, tableau, visio, dynamics. CRM softwares like dymanics

    -microsoft office programs

-adobe creative cloud: photoshop, dreamwaver, after effects, etc

-my budget is around $2500 , can be a bit more if the system will last me a long time.

I'd prefer not to buy a Mac, unless you have a very good reason to (not super familiar with the os in general)

I'm sorry if this seems like a lot! It's just that I'm trying to make this a worthwhile investment.

    Thank you for reading!

      • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? well the best when it comes to those I mentioned before
      • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't want abtouch screen nor a finger print reader or a optical drive. I have a seperate camera I like to use so thats not a problem. The keyboard would be however very important since I will be typing a lot.

Looking for a laptop that delivers the best bang for buck for university.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:05 PM PDT

My overall budget is 600 - 900 I'm looking for a ultra portable notebook with MX150 or Radeon integrated graphics or at least something that can run popular esports titles at 60fps 1080p. Also the battery life needs to be enough to last an entire day of school (8hrs) with moderate use. If anyone can help that would be amazing this is kind of last minute!

Replacement for my surfarce pro 4 which has had an accident with a water bottle.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:33 PM PDT

My trusty surface pro 4 2016 (i5, 256gb) was probably coming to the end of its life anyway (weird green patches on screen, poor connectivity with the keyboard), but it now has water in the screen (post rice treatment) and I don't think I can trust it anymore. So time for a new one. Looking at hp spectre or lenovo yoga. Partner has had a bad experience with his dell xps13 so a little wary.

Total budget and country of purchase: AUD$2000

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? 2 in 1 defintely. Good battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very, I carry in my handbag.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13in or less

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Low level photo editing.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen and pen compatible for signing documents.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly for uni work, watching uni lectures, raw photo processing with olympus software. Gets lugged onto and off of small planes at work. Helpful if I can use it as a "tablet" during take off on commercial flights without having to stow. Would like to charge with usb-c port rather tjan proprietary charger if possible.

URGENT - Graphic Design student in need of a laptop ASAP!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:32 AM PDT

Hi there. I'm a a graphic design student who is currently transferring to a university after 3 years at community college...and my laptop just decided to spontaneously give up on me A WEEK BEFORE COLLEGE STARTS.

BACKSTORY – Since June 2016 I have had a Surface Pro 4. I loved it, but after 2 years the battery expanded and it became a hazard. So, Microsoft sent me a refurbished one even though my surface's warranty expired. Well, I've had this refurbished sp4 for LESS THAN 9 MONTHS and suddenly my Microsoft charger and docking station doesn't charge my sp4 anymore. I did literally nothing to my laptop, I have no idea wtf happened. Long story short, Microsoft refuses to refurbish it or fix it unless I pay $450 since its "out of warranty". So I'd have to pay $450 for them to send me another f-ed up laptop 😂. I think not. I'm able to charge it with a 3rd party charger but nothing else. Tested my docking station and other charger on my mom's sp4 and they work perfectly fine. Did everything I possibly could but nothing worked, I believe it's ANOTHER battery issue.

Anyway, I'm the typical broke af college student. But I'm willing to invest in a laptop that will actually last me longer than 3 years w/o having to replace it every couple years. I really do love the laptops Microsoft has been releasing over the years, but I just cannot justify losing $1600 in less than 3 years and dealing with all this bs again.

I did find out that this college requires graphic design students to bring their laptop everyday to class since they can't guarantee all classes a computer lab. Which wasn't a total shock, but I usually design on my massive monitor and use my sp4 as a second screen. I have such a difficult time designing on such a small screen since theres a lot to manage when designing.

    .

    MY CURRENT SP4'S SPECS: i7-6650U CPU @ 2.2GHz, 8GB RAM, 64-bit operating system, 256GB Storage, 12.3" Screen, 2736 x 1824 px display, 267PPI, 1.73lbs, 11.50 x 7.93 x 33in

    .

So, I'm in need of a new laptop. Obviously no laptop will hit every single one of these qualities perfectly, but here's some things I'm looking for:

TOUCH SCREEN – Preferably I'd like it to be touch screen, but doesn't need to act as a tablet like the sp4 does. I don't draw digitally.

PORTABILITY – I'lll be carrying this everywhere w/me so I'd love it to be lightweight.

DURABILITY – Definitely need it to withstand time and hopefully not have battery issues.

RAM – I'd like alot of it to be more efficient.

A BIGGER SCREEN – A main factor. I absolutely have to have a larger screen or else I won't be able to design too efficiently.

    .

    Things I CAN compromise on:

STORAGE – I don't really need much storage since I use online/external drives.

BATTERY LIFE – I don't think I need a super extensive battery. Most times I'll be near an outlet so it shouldn't be a problem. I'd rather hit most of the other qualities before getting more battery life.

NOTES – I'd only consider getting another Microsoft laptop again if I can find a different warranty provider. I heard Costco is great w/electronic warranties so I may look into that.

...ok I have a confession. I am not an apple lover. I do not like Macs. I know, I know, sacrifice me to the graphic design gods now LMAO. I'm that weirdo that likes PC better. It's mostly because I don't just use my laptop for designing, I play games too like WoW. Don't get me wrong, I understand why people love Macs, I used them for 3 years at community college. But imo their laptops are so goddamned over priced and over hyped. I just cannot bring myself to spend that kind of money when there's better laptops out there for less. So I'd like to stay away from getting an apple laptop if possible.

ANY HELP/ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. Sorry for such a long post, thank you. 💙💜😭

USA, the most I think I would spend is 800 but less is preferable

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:19 PM PDT

USA is country, the budget aim is more 500ish but I could probably go up to 800 max

The most important thing is specs for my price, battery life would be nice but I don't rlly care about it that much

Weight and thinness doesn't matter to me obviously lighter and thinner is better but I really don't care

    Definitely windows OS

    N/A for screen size preference

Game wise it just needs to run basic games nothing that bad, but I might be using adobe programs

All I actually play is like Minecraft and I'd be getting the sims too but I'm not that picky on frame rate honestly all I need is like 12 fps

    No specific stuff

I just want an overall fast and long lasting laptop that's relatively cheap

[$1,200] Laptop for school/work and light gaming.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:11 PM PDT

Total Budget and Country of Purchase:

United States of America, and I have $1,200 to use.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

Not a 2 in 1, just a regular laptop. Battery is important, but I would like the most bang for my buck.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Both are important, I will be carrying it around all day. I would like it to be no heaver than 5lb if possible.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows 10

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15" (or small bezels 17")

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

I will be playing World of Warcraft and Minecraft.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

World of Warcraft and Minecraft. I was to hit a consistent 60 FPS on medium settings as a minimum. I do want to play at 1080p too if thats possible.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

I will be typing a lot so a good back-lit keyboard is a necessity. I don't care for touch screens or finger-print readers. No optical drive either. This laptop will need to last me 4+ years so a good build-quality is important.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I have built a couple of gaming desktops, however I do not know much about laptops and their ability to game. This computer will be mainly used for school/work and web browsing, but I do want to play WoW and MC. My current laptop is about to die, and I think part of the reason was because it didn't have a dedicated GPU and would consistently get really hot while gaming. So I would like this new laptop to have dedicated graphics. Also, It needs to look as professional as possible, so avoid any RGB lights and big logos.

Thank you all for your time!
