    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

This is legit the best sub on Reddit.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 11:11 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I have been into PCs since about 1996, I was 12 at the time. I knew absolutely nothing outside of the fact that I wanted to get on this AOL 2.5 thing my friend showed me. I convinced my parents to buy a computer soon after. It was an HP bundle with an NEC CRT monitor, I forget where we bought it. It had a Pentium I 133Mz processor, I don't recall the RAM but whatever was just above bare minimum at the time. It had a 2GB Hard Drive and Windows 95.

Long story short, after many years of envy and telling myself "one day", two months ago I built my first PC. I go back and play so many games I never could, they run at such high rates I have to set limits. I play newer games on this 144hz monitor, that is compatible with G-Sync. Damn right my build has a little RGB.

I wouldn't know what a 144hz monitor was without this sub. I wouldn't know I should go with a 3rd party cooler for longevity. This sub helps so many people every day, and gives them the confidence to build a machine that will be a central portion of their lives for years.

Yes, this is another thank you post, but if any sub on Reddit deserves constant praise it is this one. From teaching how to build, what to fix in a potential build, what to do when something goes wrong (and it will), this sub is there 24/7 for anyone who asks.

Thanks for helping my ascend, and for being there for the kid who is finally ready for a budget build who wants to try to win $3M playing fortnite, and for the video editor who just got the blue screen of death.

Here is my build, I got a little of everything from the various major companies. Her name is GLaDOS, because I am that basic. You all rock.

Fans Spin, No Display And Only Mouse Lights Up

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:48 PM PDT

So i have a 7 year old HP Compaq 6200 Pro MT that i use for school and web browsing and it really hasn't bothered me much until now.

I have a Nvidia 210 pretty shit i know, but gets the job done for what i want the PC for, but yesterday i decided to remove it and use the onboard graphics instead, so i enabled the igpu in the Bios and removed the Gpu, when all was done i plugged the monitor in to the motherboard VGA slot and started the PC, the monitor went to power save Mode and the monitor light turned orange and my keyboard wouln't light up aswell, altough my mouse did.

What i did next was reinstall the 210 and plug the VGA cable in it, and when i started my PC it kept displaying the power save message and going blank and the keyboard wouldn't light up aswell.

My front leds turn on, the CD Drive is working it opens and closes, the fans spin, and if i leave the PC on for about a minute they start going crazy loud, this didn't happen before.

I have removed the Cmos battery and put it back in the PC

    I have reseated the Gpu

I have Reseated the RAM modules and tried botting with just 1 RAM stick

    I have reseated the Cpu

    Nothing as worked so far..

Im starting to think maybe the psu is going bad, if i remove all the RAM my MB beeps like it should, but if the psu was bad the fans wouldn't work along with the CD Drive right?

How long until 4k gaming becomes... feasible?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:55 AM PDT

I've found most 4k monitors to be either at 60hz or over 1k dollars. I'm also guessing you'd need an rtx2080 to even be able to play 4k games at a good fps...

I'm planning to buy a monitor and I'm wondering if I should stick to my 1080p monitor for now and wait until 4k becomes easier to buy into, or should I just get a 2k 144hz monitor because it'll be too long until 4k becomes feasible.

Any insights? I currently have a gtx1070 and ryzen 2600. (I know I made a mini build so when I upgrade I'm going to have to get a new mobo, case, cpu)

PC stuck at CPU EZ Debug LED

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:11 AM PDT

Hello everyone. My PC is fairly new (assembled a month ago) and since day before yesterday it's stuck at the red LED of EZ Debug LED. When I start the PC, all the fans rotate for a couple of seconds, and then stops then starts again and stops in a loop.

    My PC specs-

    • i5 9400f
    • MSI Z390 Gaming Plus Motherboard
    • G.skill Trident Z RGB 3000MHz RAM 8x2GB
    • INNO3D GTX 1660 Ti GPU
    • Corsair VS500 PSU

I've tried reseating both the RAM sticks, tried them both individually in both the DIMM slots, reseated GPU as well as CPU but still no luck. Sometimes i'm lucky and it boots up normally but most of the time it will loop restart.

    Any help is appreciated. thanks.

What're some quality dual monitor desk mounts for 27in monitors?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:08 AM PDT

I've been trying to figure out what are some high quality monitor mounts and everything either looks really cheaply made or is ultra expensive.

Can anyone suggest me one that are gas shock mounted to be able to move around easily? Also if they are stackable both on top of each other or side by side would be fantastic!

    Looks like RAM has bottomed

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:45 AM PDT

Plus or minus $10 either side of $70 for CL16 3200 2x8 kits the past month non RGB, around $125 for CL14.

Kind of surprised how its stuck here. Had expected a bit of a bounce.

Monitor is dying. So many selections, so many lemons, can someone tell me what's most popular right now, for a 144hz+ monitor?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:02 AM PDT

My monitor is dying. Screen is flickering as I type this.

So I know I want a 27" 2560x1440 with 144hz+ and, if possible G-sync or Nvidia compatible Freesync (currently running a 2070). Problem is, it feels like there's hundreds of options, of which almost all of them seem to have tons of bad reviews, shoddy hardware, and a plethora of issues.

I'm trying to keep within a budget of $400, though that's only a soft cap. With that being said, is there a monitor that is currently regarded as being 'it' by the community for someone looking to get into 144hz+ gaming?

RTX 2080 Super or 2080 Ti for 4K?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 07:22 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently invested in an LG 27UK650 monitor, running a normal 2080. I returned the 2080 as soon as I heard news of the super variant, thinking I would get close to 2080 ti performance. Well, saw the benchmarks of course, and the 2080 super isn't that much different. However, I am still running 4K with an RX 580, not exactly the most 4K capable card. So I usually turn it down to 1440p. I do have a 1080p 144hz monitor I use exclusively for FPS games and other fast paced stuff, but for everything else I use 4K. Question is, should I go for the 2080, 2080 Super, or save up for the 2080 ti? The two cards I have in question are the EVGA 2080 Super XC Ultra ($759) and the EVGA 2080 Ti Black, which can be had for just over $1K. Is it worth the $300 jump in price for 4K? I don't play many AAA games at the moment, mostly Forza Horizon 4 and Destiny 2. Most of my gaming is console emulation.

    My current build:

    CPU: Ryzen 2600X

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X470 F Gaming

    GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 580

    PSU: EVGA 650w G3

Monitors: LG 27UK650 and Asus VG279Q

Also, I eventually want to upgrade the 2600X to a 3700X, since I do some video editing and occasional streaming.

    First PC Build

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:39 AM PDT

I am planning to play on a 1440p 144hz monitor on a mix of triple A and esport titles. My budget is $1300 USD. Willing to spend a little more for performance and QoL but I don't really know what I actually need. The 5700XT is a placeholder for when AIB models come out. Thanks.

    Finished My Build!!

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:24 PM PDT

Thank you to all the people on this forum for input and help regarding my first PC build (since Pentium 4s in the early 2000s). It took me about 6 hours, but I finally got it finished. Now all I need is my mouse that's supposed to be delivered today from Amazon to finally get everything installed. Here's my part list (changed out the PSU to a Corsair RM750i).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QGpL6s

Cable management is so/so, as I'm planning on swapping the case for the newly released NZXT H710i in a couple of weeks when it's released. Thoughts?

    Is there a significant difference between 1080p60fps @ 60hz monitor vs. 1080p60fps @ 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:31 PM PDT

    I'm currently on a R7 2700 + 2060 + 1080p 60hz monitor setup, and the game I play is Elder Scrolls Online.

The game itself isn't well optimized (it's cpu-bound, but even the beastliest of cpu's cannot run this game with high settings), so I have my fps locked to 60 via RivaTunerStatisticsServer. 72 fps and higher is easily done for me, but with the current monitor there isn't really any point in putting any extra cpu work when I'm limited anyway.

Will this game look any different at all if I kept all settings and 60 fps the same, BUT switched to a 144hz monitor?

Is there a site that shows what the BIOS utilities look like for current motherboards?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:20 PM PDT

I've never liked the BIOS utility on my six-year-old Gigabyte motherboard, and now that I'm shopping for a new one, I want to take the BIOS into account.

Is there any site that shows what the BIOS looks like for various current motherboards? Even a few screen shots of each would be helpful. I'm most interested in X570's, but the more, the merrier.

    $1000 Work Computer

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 07:31 AM PDT

I got work to agree to letting me build a new computer instead of getting a new MacBook Pro. I run Linux full time and the new touch-bar Macs are basically impossible to run Linux on.

I'm a web developer so I really just need CPU power to run compilers and web browsers and a terminal. I really want to run a new Ryzen processor and need to if possible run an AMD graphics card as I run Sway as my WM and it doesn't work out of the box on Nvidia but will with a little work. So if I can get just as good of a graphics card for the same price or cheaper that's fine.

My main hopes are, getting more performance if possible while staying at $1000 give or take $50 or so. I also will need to set this computer on my desk so a horizontal case would be great but I could always get a vertical one and lay it sideways or put a vertical one on my desk. I have the room but my hope was a horizontal one could slide under my mounted monitors. More RAM could also be cool, I honestly don't care about RGB and can drop it if that can double my RAM.

Optimising your system once everything has been set up.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:39 PM PDT

Hey guys, I was just wondering if you have any recommendations for optimising your system once everything is working? What I usually do is:

    1. Change the power settings in Windows to high performance
    2. Change the power options in the Nvidia Control Panel to prefer maximum performance
    3. Update gpu drivers with GeForce Experience
    4. Check for Windows updates
    5. Remove a lot of the default pre-installed Windows programmes like "Sticky Notes" etc.

So basically, do you have any other good suggestions?

Thanks in advance and have a good day!

    Noise optimization. SSD or AIO?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 07:24 AM PDT

I could update both, but I'm on a budget. I have a Ryzen 2600X with stock cooler and a 2 tb HDD making noise. But i can't figure out which is making the most noise.

I know the big culprit is often the GPU. But I'm not looking to watercool that one for now.

So what would be the biggest difference to upgrade for now. The HDD or the CPU cooler?

    Loose GPU fan

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:11 PM PDT

    I have a dual fan XFX r290.

One of the fans is broken, it only spins at very slow speeds or not at all. It seems to be loose, like it's trying to get away from whatever is holding it in place.

If I load up a game and gently push on middle of the fan it starts speeding up and stays like it for a while. It also seems to work slightly better with my PC case on its side

Is it possible to fix this? Or is a new fan needed?

    Thanks in advance.

Truck driver needs suspension for over the road rig

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:11 PM PDT

As a truck driver the truck bounces violently and the suspension doesn't absorb a lot of the bumps. I'm building a desktop rig for my truck mainly because laptops and the thermal throttling and higher pricetag is not cup of tea. What I'm asking is there a PC case or a harness you can use to suspend the case and use it to absorb the impacts of the road?
