Looking for a laptop that can game but does not look like a "gaming" laptop

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 11:13 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Am from Canada; $1000 CAD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money please. Battery life is not a problem since outlets are in every side of the classrooms I go to.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As thin as possible and as light as possible (< 5lbs)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. I dont think you can game on Mac anyways.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything below 15". I dont want to let the people know behind me that I'm watching netflix

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Possibly some light photo editing. Mostly going to play lightweight games such as Apex Legends, Overwatch, League of Legends, Dota 2, and occasional Diablo III

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games are mentioned above. I'd like to play them on 60fps on a medium-high settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? *GOOD. KEYBOARD. *PLEASE! ** I mostly use the keyboard for making essays and research papers so yes a bomb ass keyboard will be amazing. A good build quality would be great to have as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I know I said that my budget is $1k but depending on the specs of the laptop, I'll check and see if I can add more to my budget.

    Gaming-ish Laptop for under 1.5k

    Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:50 AM PDT

Hello! I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop since my living arrangements are not suited for building my own gaming pc.

Since I don't live in the US I am a bit limited; I cannot order from outside my country (Central Europe) since I would have to pay over 30% of the price of anything i buy online so the border carrier can give me the package. Anyway.

I'm looking for a laptop that I can play RPGs on, like Pillars of Eternity, Divinity 2, Witcher 3 and the occasional simulation like the Sims games. I'm not really looking to play at ultra settings but I would love it if the game wouldn't lag at high settings for these games - especially the Sims 3 since it's so badly optimitzed it lags on anything lmao.

Other than that, I would mostly use it for schoolwork.

i5 is good for me, and if I can find an i7 at this price that doesn't have terrible specs, and a graphics card that has about 6GB of VRAM.

Please let me know if there's something like this on the market. As a point of reference, I am considering ASUS FX504GM-EN364, the i5 version.

Help me buy my first gaming laptop

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 10:36 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Middle east, can spend $1000 plus ~$100 for reshipping from the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. High performance but subtle. Don't want my laptop to leak red and green lights. If Thinkpad, Touch screen would be good

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a concern

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, maybe Linux in the future

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15 inch or less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly Cad and simulations and games like gta5, similar occasionally.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? (Not a serious gamer) gta v and similar action adventure games, medium settings, 60fps will do

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely DO NOT want a 1050ti or lower, and backlit keyboard

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Want a laptop with a H series processor, gtx 16 series graphic card and look subtle (legion 530,rog531).

can skip all given conditions for a Thinkpad with a H series processor in given price.

I'm aware all this is asking too much for 1000$, but I'm broke college student with a dead laptop,

    Computer Engineering Student's Laptop

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 700-900 dollars (not concrete; read till the end); United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good specs and battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? will be carrying on backpack so not too heavy

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 - 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Visual Studio, Capture CIS/PSpice, MPLAB X, MATLAB, VIVADO

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming for this but would love some advice: more on the bottom.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No specific requirements, but out of all of these, a priority would be build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So basically my planned workflow for college is to (hopefully) have a laptop, as well as a pc at home which I can do more powerful tasks if needed. if you guys could give me a compelling reason as to why this proposed workflow is a better choice over just buying a gaming laptop, which is heavy, and not extensively upgradeable. gaming wise I do not want a gpu in my laptop to be a temptation, so a pc at home with its own gpu would be the best bet. if the budget I proposed is too much, please feel free to recommend otherwise. Thanks in advance!!

Powerful Laptop for a Wanabe Digital Nomad Video Editor

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE:

**Total budget and the country of purchase**

    Country: United States

    Budget: $2,000 or less

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1form factor, good battery life, or best specifications for the money? Pick all that apply.

I would love to have a good battery life and good specifications for the money.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?

It is quite important. I do not want something that is the largest laptop in the world, but I am willing to have a heavier laptop if it means that it can do more of what I need it to.

    **Which OS do you require?

Preferably windows, though I am open to Linux (but I really am not very well versed in computers). I do no want a mac. I have a mac and it does not do what I need it to.

** Do you prefer a certain screen size?

    N/A

**Are you doing CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming? List which programs/ games you desire to run.

I will be doing intense video editing with this laptop. I use Davinci Resolve 16 mostly and I like to have a browser open at the same time in order for me to be able to do certain little things that I need to be done on the side for that video.

** Are there any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, fingerprint reader, optical drive or good import devices (touchpad/keyboard)?

I need this computer to have a reliable build quality because I am planning on traveling with this. I also need it to have many USB ports and an SD card reader. I need a lot of different things going at the same time when I am editing.

** Leave any finishing thoughts here that you think may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Not really.

A laptop that will natively output 4k/60fps

    Posted: 25 Jul 2019 04:12 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: 1500AUD, Australia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. prefer specs, then battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3"-14" but wanna connect to to external tv

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. light photo editing

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Natively supporting 4k/60 fps HDMIoutput

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Early this year i bought a Lenovo E490 (the one with integrated gpu), which is ok-ish for the price but kinda struggles in some areas.

    • Cant play 4k/60 fps videos from my phone. I also blame oneplus here for very high 4k/60fps bitrate (120mbps)
    • Loses its smoothness when i connect to HDTV, seems to framedrop lightly (4k/60fps resolution)
    • Had to buy an adaptor (usb-c to hdmi) to output 4k/60fps and i not sure how godd it is, i need a laptop that natively outputs 4k/60fps

So what im looking in my new laptop is something as slim as possible that i will be able to connect my HDTV to and play 4k content effortlessly. 4k could be local content, youtube/netflix/etc

    1. Able to connect with HDMI to HDTV 4k60fps for media consumption
    2. Powerful enough to effortlessly play high bitrate 4k files
    3. lightweight

Can't Choose Which One to Buy

    Posted: 25 Jul 2019 03:55 AM PDT

Hello, before talking about which one to buy i think i should point out that i am from Turkey. Reason i am saying that is some laptops are not available in our stores. And thanks to our goverment buying one from abroad is really expansive because of import duties. Whatever, i have always been a desktop user till now so i need some assistance. (1 USD = 5.70 TRY)

    1. HP Omen 15-DC1008NT Intel Core i5 9300H 16GB 1TB 7200RPM + 128GB SSD GTX1650 4GB 15.6" = 6000 TRY (our currency)
    2. HP Pavilion 15-BC503NT Intel Core i5 9300H 8GB 1TB 5400RPM + 128GB SSD GTX1650 4GB 15.6" = 4900 TRY
    3. And i have just found this. I am really surprised because i didnt know that Exper (Turkish brand) producing laptops. So there is no source to compare this option with others. = Exper XCellerator M5X-5061A1 Intel Core i5 7400 16GB 1TB 5400RPM + 128GB SSD GTX1060 6GB = 6270 TRY ( I searched cpu benchmark sites for i5 7400 but it seems a destkop cpu on every site. So i am not sure about it's performance.)

Omen seems more choosable than the others. And if you enlighten me about their cooling systems i would be very thankful. (I'am looking for a entry level gaming laptop)

    Laptop for Graphic Design Student

    Posted: 25 Jul 2019 03:29 AM PDT

Hello! I'm looking for a laptop to use for university right now and hopefully still efficient to use for professional work in Graphic Design in the future. I've also been a Mac user for a long time but I'm very open to try new things, so I hope to find more (and better) options.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1500 USD or less (but wouldn't mind going higher if ever), Philippines
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2 in 1 form would be great (but not necessary) and best specifications
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important as I plan to be able to bring this around to use in class
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Mac or Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly Adobe Suite (with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Lightroom being the ones I frequently use) for graphic design, illustration, and photo editing. I hope to run a few games as well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Was hoping to have Sims 4 or if possible as well, Overwatch (though not familiar with settings for games)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and good input devices especially with the touchpad
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Was also looking into the Microsoft Surface Book 2 but is it still worth buying now (or just worth it in general)? Other than that, I'm just not knowledgeable with laptops :( so if you have any information like general specifications I should for, hope you can share!

    Thank you!

Looking for a laptop to do mostly schoolwork on.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2019 03:11 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $500-$700 American dollars (about 5000-7000 SEK, Swedish krona) I am from Sweden.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: I prefer a 2 in 1 form factor as well as good battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?: Not that important seeing as I probably won't move it out of the house very often. I mostly do my schoolwork at home.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: I don't know a lot about this but on my old/current computer it was windows. I would say any since I don't really have an opinion of my own.

Do you have a preferred screen size?: 14" and up.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?: Since any past computer I've used didn't have anything like a touchscreen or a finger-print reader I'd say I'm neutral to it being a feature on my new computer. But I'd like a good keyboard and reliable build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion:

I may use some music writing software in the future that mostly runs on Mac and Windows so I'd prefer if that's the OS. But if there's a computer that "matches" everything else I've written but runs on another OS it's fine.

And if anyone has any recommendations for an antivirus program I'd be glad to hear it since I've used McAfee on my old/current computer and some say it slows down the computer.

Found this amazing sub recently! As the title says I haven't had a (working) personal laptop in over 5 years (always been in jobs that provided me with excellent Macbook Pros). Finally decided that I want something inexpensive that's my own as you never know what can change with work.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm learning photoshop so some basic photo-editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The only game I really do want to be able to play is Magic the Gathering Arena.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No specific requirements.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Appreciate any help you can offer.

Help me to find Lightweight Quiet laptop that can run some games for college

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:52 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1k~1.5k USD. US
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. at least 8 hrs battery life and good specs
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? weight is important: ~5 lbs(2.2kg)
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13~15.6. Smaller is better.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD(prob), Destiny2, overwatch, league
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want Overwatch and Destiny2 with low op-60 fps or med op-30 fps+. I think something like 1050 or higher would do it.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Durability is important so that it can last 3+ years. Destiny 2 is 90gb+ so I need at least 200 gb of SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want it to be QUIET. I don't want it to attempt to take off with jet engine middle of a lecture, but it's fine to be loud when I'm playing games. I also don't want it to look like a spaceship.

Helpful background info. So I'm gonna be a freshman in engineering major. I want to take notes with this laptop during lectures, so I want it to be small enough to fit on that teeny tiny fold up desk, quiet enough to use it in lectures and library, light enough to carry it around, and powerful enough to play some games. I did some research but I don't know much. I don't know the difference between i5 and i7. I don't know much of AMD and RYZEN. I heard Lenovo is not good but I need your opinion on that. I used to have surface book and i switched twice because the battery swole up and was about to burst into flames, so I don't like 2 in 1 laptops. I don't care about touch screen since I don't like touching the screen. I really like GIGABYTE Aero with 1660 but it's a little bit too expensive. Some Acer ones look good but I haven't seen reviews about how noisy they are. Please help me. If you find any deals, please tell me that too. I will keep looking for the unicorn while I wait your answers. Thank you.

    Edit) added space between lines.

[SQ] Anybody here have experience with Newgg Seller called Super Dealsea?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:31 PM PDT

Hi there, first time posting here, I think this is allowed to post here but let me know if it's not.

    I found a laptop I'm interested in:

    https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-000D-054K4

The laptop looks like a too good deal (what's the catch?). I think a lot of buying in Newegg is looking at the reputation of the seller. This one seems to be fairly new, but has good reviews. I'm a bit weary of buying this laptop, not the least because it sounds too cheap. That's why I'd like to hear if anyone here has any experience buying from them.

Just to be clear, I'm not asking advice or opinions about the laptop itself, but about the seller.

    Thanks.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? WoW (Max settings) and ARK (Unfamiliar with out graphically demanding this game is but beat as possible)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Wife wants an RGB backlight Keyboard where the color is adjustable to her liking.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. She really wants the laptop to be White.

TLDR: White laptop with an adjustable RGB keyboard that plays WoW at max settings, and is "Pretty" for under $1000

    $1200-1500 USA, All Around Laptop

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 05:45 PM PDT

Hope the format is ok, did this on mobile...thanks in advance for any help!!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $12-1500 range
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 for 1 doesn't matter, battery life would be nice but doesn't need to be anything extreme.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important, preferably something on the lighter side is best but not too picky
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.6 tops
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some minor video editing (clipping stuff for a friends youtube) but mainly some excel/python work (nothing crazy)and some gaming (rocket league/NHL); also do Some streaming/video stuff like twitch/videocasts
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rocket league, NHL20, nothing fancy (maybe vanilla WoW again but not sure)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch/fingerprint doesn't matter, reliable build with a solid keyboard is most important – along with a decent screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just from the little built I've browsed on here and deals I feel like an Eluktronics or one of the brandless laptops are in the right park but im not sure. I'd prefer it not to look too crazy of a gaming as I like the clean metal look most of all.

Ideally something that I could upgrade so that it can last me the next 5-7 years without much worry, if that's even possible haha.

Thank you again for any help!!

    Thin and light laptop

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 11:15 PM PDT

The main objective of the laptop is for c++ coding (graphics engine and stuff) and CAD (mostly making vehicle designs, no use for simulations). Google asks me to buy Monster price and specs laptops but my budget is <=1000$. I want to carry it around easily and it should last at least 7-8 hours. Your suggestions will be appreciated. A screen <14 inches world be nice but it isn't a very big concern.

Which Dell model should i choose ?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 11:02 PM PDT

Hello ! After several week, i've managed to pick out two options :

    DELL G5587-5542BLK : https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07GRBN8GW

    DELL G5587-5859BLK : https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07CD3MRZD

It seemed obvious at first that the first model is a better deal, but the second from what i saw is advertised as come with an Anti-Glare Display. Is this any different from the first model ?

Discussion: should people buy surface laptops?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 12:20 PM PDT

Hello, I'm making this thread to open up a discussion about surface laptops and if they should be recommend, over the last few weeks I've been searching for a new laptop online and asking friends for recommendations, I came across surface laptops and while they seem great on paper I've seen alot of complaints about them. Here are some of the most common issues I've seen people complain about:

Dead pixels on surface pro laptops

Battery life reduced by a large percentage after a few months of use

    Back stand problems

    Performance issues, alot of them

General hardware problems with the laptops

If u check the subreddit r/surface and scroll down a bit, it's like every 3 out of 5 posts are people complaining/asking for help with issues they've encountered.

With that said, would u generally recommend surface laptops, and are these issues exaggerated? Thank u very much

[$1,200 USA] Graduate school laptop for programs such as ArcMap/GIS and light gaming

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,200 in the USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? None at all - this will be used more of a work station to use both at home and graduate office. My wife will have to lug it back and forth from campus and home but she doesn't want to sacrifice functionality for portability.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" with a 1980 x 1020 resolution

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. It will be used for a lot of spatial analysis programs such as ArcMap, Google Earth Pro, FragStats/R. Very light and infrequent gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games will be simple such as Sims 4.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD, good keyboard, very reliable, no touch-screen please!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is for my wife and will be used for graduate school and will mostly be a mobile work station. Unfortunately, the grad office does not supply a desktop computer and we cannot afford to buy two desktops, one for her office and one for home so we think the best option is a laptop. She just needs something reliable and somewhat powerful. I have had very reliable Dell and HP laptops in the past so I would prefer those brands.
