Is 1050 okay for casual gaming?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 12:31 AM PDT

So I was thinking of upgrading to something better. Currently I have Acer Aspire E15 with 7th gen i5 and 940MX. I use it for browsing the web, youtube, light video editing and gaming. I'm not your average spoiled pcmasterrace gamer, so I'm okay with my glorious 720p 30-60fps in most modern titles. Still, I was wondering if upgrading to a laptop with Ryzen 5 2500u and GTX 1050 would make a significant difference? Will I notice that I have a much stronger machine? Or is it better to go with 1050 ti and upwards? As I said, I'm not that picky. I want all games to run at a playable FPS, but I don't care if they look like a potato.

Suggestions for CPU/RAM Heavy Laptop for travel

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 12:55 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 - $1500 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery Life and Specs most important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very Important, have to carry it around in a backpack so would prefer something lighter, but i'll get something heavier if necessary.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15 Inches, but not necessary, 120hz screen would be nice though.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming kind of, i have to run a program called Rewind on it which is essentially a 3rd Party CS:GO Demo Viewer, it's extremly CPU and RAM heavy, GPU doesn't really matter to me.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard would be nice, don't care too much about the touchpad as i won't use it much.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is for working while traveling, being able to do work on Planes and at events/hotels etc

RTX 2060 vs GTX 1660 Ti vs ????

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:33 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

I'm finally upgrading from an MSI GL62M 7RD (with a GTX 1050, i5 7300HQ 2.5GHz). It's been good to me but I need to move on

I primarily play Fortnite competitively so I'm looking for something that can reach 144fps (new laptop would obviously need a 144hz screen). Apart from fortnite, I play a bunch of single player games but don't care tooo much for performance there (hoping that Cyberpunk is gonna be as well optimized as Witcher 3!)

I want something that is relatively future proof that'll last at least 3 years and still be decent. I'm looking at both brand names and custom builds, and my max budget is around £1500.

The NVIDIA range of GPUs is so... confusing. You have your RTXs, then the GTX 1660 Ti fits in there somewhere?

I'm looking solely at 15 inch models. I don't care about the keyboard as I play external. I want a top range CPU. Screen needs to be 144hz. Not sure about G-sync tho.

Scan.co.uk have their 3XS range. There are these 2 builds I'm looking at from there:

    GTX 1660 Ti build £1415

    RTX 2060 build £1440

Cyberpower systems UK also have a good looking custom build which I'd like an informed opinion on:

    RTX 2060 build £1250

PC Specialist also have some builds, annoying to link as its all customisable but adding it here anyway:

    https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/VortexIX-15/

Can anyone recommend any other UK based (or EU) custom built laptops?

Thanks for reading and any help is greatly appreciated

Huawei Matebook X Pro or Macbook pro

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 03:56 AM PDT

I was looking for a new laptop to use primarily for university and using the internet.

I'll need to be able to use all Microsoft office products and would like something that will run properly without issue i.e. running out of storage space, crashes, viruses etc.

My flatmate has a MacBook and recommends it and it was going to be the purchase I made when someone else recommended that I should get a Huawei laptop as my phone is also Huawei.

What product would be the best fit for my needs is it worth getting a Matebook because of the ability to connect my laptop with my phone or is the MacBook a superior option?

Sorry for formatting I'm on mobile :/

Too good to be true ? Acer Nitro 5 Sale

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 12:21 PM PDT

Going on a Linus tech tips recommendation I decided on the Acer Nitro 5. When I go to best buy website there's the Acer nitro 5 1050 ti and 1050 versions. Linus reviewed the 1050 ti model but the 1050 is significantly cheaper. Is the deal really though ? (By that I mean is Best buy trying to sell me a refurbished or older generation while claiming its the new generation?) and is it worth it compared to the 1050 ti version?

    Appealing to subrules:

I'm using it for college. I intend for mainly course work and light gaming on the side.

I live in Canada but because of the deal, I'm having it forwarded from a friend in the Us.

    Link to 1050 version: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-nitro-5-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-1tb-hard-drive-shale-black/6212601.p?skuId=6212601

    Link to 1050ti: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-nitro-5-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-256gb-solid-state-drive-shale-black/6212602.p?skuId=6212602

Also, can someone confirm if these are the newest versions of the nitro 5 or am I getting mixed up?

    Opinion on laptops

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 03:40 AM PDT

I'm a computer engineering student so I need a laptop for mainly programming. After searching for laptops I came across Asus vivobook S15 S530FN. I'm just confused whether to buy model with i7-8565u or i5-8265u processor. All other specifications are same for both the model and both has 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD and MX150 dedicated graphic card.

Price for i7 model is Rs. 80500 Price for i5 model is Rs. 67500

Also I want to use the laptop for machine learning.

Please suggest me which one to go for also tell me if there is a better option available in this price range.

    Thanks in advance.

Good Thin and Light Gaming Laptop for College

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:06 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am looking for a thin and light gaming laptop to use when I start college in the fall.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      • I would like to keep it under 2000 USD but I would be willing to go up to 2500 if there is a really great option for a little more money.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      • I definitely want the best specs for my money but good battery is also very important since I will be in college and may not have access to a plug all the time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Weight isn't a huge deal for me but I would like the laptop to be under an inch thick
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      • Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • 15 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • I'm going to study engineering in college so I would like to be able to run Autodesk AutoCAD/Inventor/Revitt, Solidworks and Matlab.
      • In addition I would like to be able to do some gaming (R6S, GTA V, Battlefield V, Forza Horizon 4)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • For my most intensive games I think I would be okay with a 30 fps minimum at 1080p but closer to 60 would be nice
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • I'm not super bothered by weird keyboards/track pads and I don't care about having a finger-print reader or even a webcam.
      • For I/O I would like to have an HDMI port or mini display port so I can connect the laptop to a monitor.
      • In general I just want good build quality that will last and feels nice while using the laptop.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • One thing I am kind of worried about is thermal management, I know it sucks in most thin and lights but I want to extend the life of the components in the laptop as long as possible (I'm fine with loud fans)
      • I would like to get a laptop that doesn't look super flashy so I can take it to class, library, study sessions, ect.
      • I want to try and future proof the laptop a bit
      • Finally I've come up with a few options on my own:
        • MSI GS65 Stealth w/ i7-9750H, GeForce GTX 1660Ti, 16GB and 512GB SSD for $1,699.99
        • Razer Blade 15 w/ i7-8750H, GeForce RTX 2060, 16GB and 512GB SSD for $2,249.99
        • ASUS ROG GU502GV w/ i7-9750H, GeForce RTX 2060, 16GB and 1TB SSD for $1,849.99
        • 2019 Gigabyte AERO 15 w/ i7-9750H, GeForce GTX 1660Ti, 16GB and 512GB SSD for $1,899.00
      • Tell me what you think about the laptops I've found or give your own suggestions if you think they meet my criteria better

If you've made it this far thank you so much for reading through this!!

Suggestions for a work laptop please!

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:06 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: - open-ish and Usa

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. interested in the 2 in 1 form factor due to pen tech

      • How important is weight and thinness to you? somewhat? Need to be able to draw comfortably but some mobility is appreciated
      • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows
      • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
      • *Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. * yes, heavily 8+ hours a day. Multiple Adobe programs, clip studio, premier, etc looking for something I can draw directly on
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Play lots of games, though not important. But if the laptop can game... bonus. Fallout 76, assassins creed, random aaa games

      • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good pen input. I can't stress this being the must important part. I see some pen laptops have a small lag.. it has to have as close to no pen input lag as possible.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I realize a desktop with a wacom would be better.. but that's what I'm coming from. The last 13 years. My desktop just died (built her in 2012) and it was starting to show its age. I work with really high res files, so I'm use to photoshop hogging all resource. I'm coming be because review videos of different pen laptops are useless if they don't state how big a file they are using in photoshop.

I recently had a baby (she 12 months old now) and coming back to work from a year hiatus made me realize my desktop won't work anymore which is why I've had the sudden interest in 2 in 1s like a yoga or surface pro. I've been interested in the thinkpad x1 tablet because it had thunderbolt ports and allow me to use my old GPU's. So thunderbolt would be a massive gain.

Thank you for your patience, I'm writing this at 4am on my phone so this might be riddled with typos

CPU or GPU, which one should I choose? (better CPU or GPU)

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 09:27 PM PDT

There are 2 laptops that I'm interested in. Both basically have the same specs with 1 difference:

    *Laptop 1: CPU i7-9750H and GPU 1660ti

    *Laptop 2: CPU i5-9300H and GPU 2060

I have checked online, and learned that there's a huge difference in the CPU performance of the i7 and i5 (approx 25%), but the GPU performance difference is 5% ish.

My problem is that I can't choose between them. Although the performance difference between 1660ti and 2060 will be about 5-10 fps, 2060 has ray-tracing. And coming back to the fps difference, sometimes 5-10 fps matters.

    What should I do?

Looking for a 14 inch, good battery life, good keyboard and good speakers

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 12:57 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking to buy a new laptop (as you might have guessed) and it got really overwhelming with all the models that there are out there.

The things that I am looking for are good keyboard - because I am a programmer and soon a student I would do a lot of typing on this laptop.

A good screen, I will watch a lot of videos on this laptop.

Good battery life, as I wouldn't want to stay close to charging ports during a long day.

Strong enough for light gaming, I am not going to play Battlefield 5 on the laptop, but I would want to play some indies on it, maybe things like Crash and Spyro trilogy is a good indicator.

And I would need some storage space, either built in, or an option to upgrade the laptop and add additional HDD.

Flex and touch-screen are not a must, but I wouldn't mind if it would be included, but it's not a deal breaker.

    Price range: Up to 1000$

I have seen a dell 14 inch (5480), i7-8565U, 16GB of RAM, Nvidia MX250, 128gb SSD + 1TB HDD for 1000$, but it seems to be a local model as I can't find any reviews for it online on international sites. IN-RD33-11282. But the lack of reviews scares me.

    Is there anything you recommend?

Student Laptop + Gaming. Recommendations Needed!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 06:57 PM PDT

So basically, I want a laptop that is functional for a student in the sense that

    - the battery life is good or at least decent (5+ hours when Not gaming).

    - not too too heavy. Preferably around 7lbs. give or take.

On the gaming end im looking

    - to play many light games (sims, stardew valley, etc.)

    - but I like to venture into games like Sid Meiers Civ, city builders like Cities Skylines & a few more medium intensity to higher graphics intense games.

    - i dont play anything incredibly intensive like battlefield or any shooters really for that matter of fact.

Price range: the most im willing to spend is around 3k tax included.

Would love to hear y'alls recommendations.

Not interested in HP, Lenovo or Acer miss me with that poor sh*t, also not looking for Macbooks... beautiful but cant do anything.

Good performance oriented Ultrabook from 2019?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 11:20 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      2000 €, but for a good reason I can go up to 2500 €.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
The most important factor best specification, and right after the good battery.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important, I would carry it with myself on a daily basis and would be nice to just "grab and go".
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13 inch would be ideal, I tend to find 15 inch laptops too big.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • I plan to use as work machine: Visual Studio Code, IntelliJ, Docker, heavy load on browsers
      • Also want to play some games too: Don't Starve, Oxygen Not Included, other indie games like Osmos, Oxenfree, FTL
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      see above, 30+ fps.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • USB-C PD charging
      • Only USB-C configurations are preferred without USB-A slots
      • Keyboard should be reliable and ISO layout
      • Fingerprint reader is a nice-to-have
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • Would be good if the laptop released this year
        • or will be released this year: upcoming devices welcomed too if the release date is in the next few months (let's say it's already announced but yet in the market)
      • Additionally, it would be good to have the capability of playing 4K movies with connected to a TV as external screen
      • Slim bezel
      • Previously I was thinking between the XPS 13 and HP Elite x2 G4, but no solid opinion about either of those

    Thanks!

New gaming laptop that will last me a while.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 11:16 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1000. I would order the laptop from within my home country, i.e. Pakistan.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A mix of both maybe? I'm not too picky.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is not a big issue for me. Just that it should not be super stocky and big.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer screens around the 15' size.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only gaming more or less. Otherwise netflix and music streaming mostly.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games like WoW, Dota, Divinity Original Sin II on moderate settings with decent FPS with little input delay. I just want it to be better than my current fps and graphics (link to my current laptop below).

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Yes to reliable build quality. Good/Average Keyboard as well.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been lurking around this subreddit and researching on a new laptop for a while now, and have currently whittled is down to two laptops, the Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571-77QK (but I hear this gets too hot) and the Dell i7577-5241BLK-PUS (I hear the screen is horrible).

For reference and context, my current laptop is about 5-6 years old (i'm in the office so cannot tell the exact name of the laptop cause its at home but it has like an AMD r5 graphics card).

    Thanks!

(~$1850) Looking for durable, reliable laptop that can handle moderate to not-too-heavy workloads and occasional light gaming

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 07:20 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably ~$1800 or less. Willing to go up to ~$2000 if there really is an absolute perfect laptop. I would order the laptop from the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I really dont need the 2 in 1 form factor, so I dont prefer it. I prefer a regular clamshell. Good battery life for me would be around 7-9 hours or 6.5-8 hours. I am kind of flexible on battery as long as the battery isnt like max 5-6 hours. Best specs for money would be nice, I am curious to see what that might be.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I previously used a dell xps 15, so about 4.6 lbs. I thought it was a bit on the heavy side. I previously bought the computer expecting to need more intensive performance. Now I am seeing about scaling back in weight at the expense of very high performance. So yes, weight is important to me but I am not looking precisely for macbook air lightness or anything, just something not as heavy as the xps 15. Thinness is preferable (but not at the expense of decent thermals and reliable performance). Dell xps thinness was pretty fine with me as a reference. Something like lenovo t480 would probably be too thick for me as another reference.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer screens bigger than 13' (e.g. dell xps 13) but am not totally opposed to them. Definitely not something bigger than dell xps 15 screen.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use MS office/chrome quite a bit with a bunch of tabs open. I also use MATLAB (my heaviest software) and do some light programming for schoolwork (think more python scripts than optimized, large scale programming tasks). I am not trying to shave off seconds of runtime with a strong computer or anything, but I would like these programs to run on my computer with decent performance and not melting the computer. Also, I would like to be able to do occasional very light gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games like minecraft, garrys mode, RUST type games on low-moderate settings with decent FPS with little input delay. Since I dont game very much (I just want the option to be able to without it being a pain), Im guessing about 50 FPS give or take? Just playable and not a pain is my goal.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Anything that is NOT the butterfly keyboard or similarly shallow. Absolute YES to reliable build quality. Touch screen on a computer with "good battery", otherwise no. Neutral about fingerprint reader. No need for optical drive. I would prefer more I/O than what is offered in recent macbooks. At the very least a single USB type A port.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like this computer to be pretty future proof (decent CPU,GPU,16 GB RAM, solid build). Also either upgradeable or probably reliable enough that I wont have to constantly open up the backside to do X or Y thing. Also, decent, good, or great thermals. I am also skeptical about Dell brand since my xps 15 turned out to be a flop of a buy (abysmal thermals and my cluelessness at the time were the end of it)

I dont think I am very picky about display quality, but I would prefer a screen that is not too terrible and something okay to look at comfortably for most of the day. Also (I am probably asking a lot by now) a machine that is not loud during light use.

I am leaning towards thinkpads but dont let my initial thoughts bias you :)

Suggestions for a stylish laptop capable of moderate gaming

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 06:39 PM PDT

    Hi all!

After lurking around for a few weeks, I figured I'd go ahead and ask specifically about what laptops would be recommended for my needs. I currently have an older Vaio laptop that I really like but need to replace soon.

Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally around 1k, but could be talked into higher if needed. USA.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Probably best specs.

How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer to stay pretty thin. I tried out a ASUS Nitro and hated how it was so bulky and the general styling. I really hate the gaming laptops with red accents or other design elements that scream "I AM A GAMING LAPTOP."

Which OS do you require? Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? I currently have a 17 inch and really like that size, but it isn't make or break to me.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Some gaming!

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to easily play Sims 4 on high optics. I also am purchasing this before Planet Zoo comes out and would like to play that on higher settings too- so I need at least a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (2GB) / AMD Radeon R9 270X (2GB) and 8 GB RAM.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I can adapt to most things, but it absolutely has to have a number pad on the right. I like sleek, stylish machines, but realize those usually come with higher price tags. I prefer backlit keys, but not red lights (I really hate the color red, yet every gaming laptop seems to love it!)

Thank you all so much for any suggestions :) I really appreciate your input and time!

Chromebook that works as file manager and OneNote machine?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:59 PM PDT

Essentially looking for something that is essentially an internet browser but lets me manipulate my external hard drive while letting me work on OneNote. Hopefully around 400? Thanks!
