    Simple Questions - May 02, 2019

    Posted: 02 May 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Might've bricked my computer.

    Posted: 02 May 2019 01:15 PM PDT

Please upvote for visibility, I don't know what to do :(.

So I upgraded my rig. Kept my old 2x4gb HyperX fury and put in 2x8gb Corsair vengeance pro rgb.

I sorted out some memory errors by updating the bios, now all 24gb is detected. Problem is I can't boot into windows anymore.

I get a ramdisk error, something about there not being enough memory. I've tried to solve it by booting into safe mode with command prompt, then using the bcdedit command or something. This didn't work. Now my pc just has a black screen or an error when I boot.

    Help please?

EDIT: READ MY REPLY TO THE TOP COMMENT.

The problem is now with my SSD. I'm gonna attempt to repair it tomorrow. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS, IT ISN'T GOING UNAPPRECIATED ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I constantly find myself wanting to break down and rebuild my PC because building is addicting and so satisfying to me.... does anyone else feel the same?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:05 AM PDT

I built my first PC just over a year ago... and it's so addicting. I find myself wanting to build more and more and trying to convince my friends to build so I can help them... as the title says, I sometimes even just get the urge to break down my PC and rebuild...

    1. Does anyone else feel the same?
    2. If I did that, would it be bad for my PC? Would it loosen slots and brackets?

Is building a PC that easy?

    Posted: 01 May 2019 10:42 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a PC soon and everyone around me seems to be encouraging me to build my own as though building it is so easy. I have watched youtube videos and read guides on building it but everything just seems so foreign to me since I have never done it before.

Should I even try building a PC? I'm just scared I will mess things up and end up with a bunch of PC parts

I was just scammed by a NewEgg vendor for 540$

    Posted: 02 May 2019 03:21 PM PDT

    Hello.

Recently I bought an RTX 2070 from Newegg (vendor, Digital shopper). They sent the package to a completely different state. The item is now out of stock and I'm getting the same e-mail that other people got saying that the tracking number Newegg sent me is incorrect. I filed a claim but I'm unsure what to do. It took me ages to muster up the 550 dollars for this card and it would kill me to lose it like this.

Just bought SSD. I have a question about moving my OS from HDD to SSD

    Posted: 02 May 2019 03:36 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong sub to post, but I'll take a chance and post anyway and see if i'm lucky.

I have recently purchased a 2nd hand 1TB SSD and I'm not very tech-savvy to be honest.

I want to keep all my stuff the same still, like my games and personal documents etc. But just move over my OS (Windows 10) and maybe a few big games over like FFXV (which is like 90GB!) to the SSD. So I'm keeping my HDD (backed up, formatted then re-copy over my personal document, programs and small games), and installing my SSD with a fresh copy of Windows 10 and my big popular games that I play.

So basically what I'm asking is, can I just simply move over my OS and some games over to the SSD, while hardly changing a thing like all my programs that are installed desktop layout etc. Or am I being a bit naive?

Apologies if this is a silly question but I'm just trying to learn a bit more about SSD's in general anyway so I hope you don't mind answering regardless.

If I'm missing something please let me know. All information is appreciated and I'll share whatever information is needed.

    TIA

    1st build advice ?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 03:28 PM PDT

Any way to make this just a little cheaper ? Or is this build perfect as is ? I also have to get a monitor, mouse, Keyboard, A table, and possibly a chair.

My keyboard that I prefer is a Anne pro 2, The mouse I'm undecided probably the white G703. Table will be an ikea table, but the monitor I'm trying to decide between 1080p 144hz/240hz or 1440p 144hz. I play a lot of FPS games.

    4k Build under $2000?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 09:08 AM PDT

I'm helping my friend pick out parts for a 4k rig that she wants but I'm kinda lost.

Basically, she wants to play games like Far Cry, The Witcher 3 and Assassin's Creed at 4k but keep the cost under $2000. Is this possible or should I tell her she would be better off going with 1440p?

If it is possible, would a 1080 be enough? What would you recommend for a graphics card?

    Thanks!

    Ryzen 5 2600X/RTX 2080 vs i5 9600k/RTX 2070

    Posted: 02 May 2019 10:57 AM PDT

With generally cheaper motherboards and running the stock cooler, the amd build will cost about the same as the intel build with a decent cooler.

I'm only going to be gaming and I plan on using a 1440p ultrawide monitor.

I guess I'm asking which route is the better choice. Will the better graphics card make a big difference due to me using an ultrawide monitor?

I know zen 2 will change things up a bit in the coming months but I'm sure there will be a very similar situation then too.

    Is 1440p 144hz worth the extra 100+ dollars over 1080p 144hz?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:59 AM PDT

I'm running a 2070, an R5 2600, and 16gb of ram at 3200 speed, and my rig needs room to stretch its legs. I play mostly shooters and other action games. What do you think? Is it worth it?

    Monitor+TV setup - Gaming PC

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:50 PM PDT

Hi, I have a question about my setup. I'm sure you guys can help me. I have my gaming PC in my bedroom connected with my main monitor (1080p 144hz with freesync), where I play most of my games, and I recently connected the TV (1080p 60hz) where I'll play mostly single player games from my bed. So, everything seems to work well (I only tried Fifa 19 so far). The thing is, when I want to play on TV, I want to turn off the main monitor (through its power button) so it doesn't bother me and also shut off the led strip and then when I'm done, or have to do something quick on the PC, just turn it on quickly with that button. Same thing (reversed) when I want to play on my desk with the TV off. To do so, I've set the monitor settings to duplicate in windows 10 and it works, but I was wondering if by doing so the GPU and or CPU will still have to output two signals and so waste some computing power (basically fps) to render the two images, or the fact that one screen is off will prevent that so would be like using only one? Sorry in advance for my English..

So many different versions of 1660 ti, is there any difference? (First time buying building/buying gpu)

    Posted: 02 May 2019 11:54 AM PDT

I'm trying to buy a 1660 ti online, but on newegg it shows dozens of different ones with slightly different names and designs. Is there any difference between all of them, or do I just get the cheapest?

It's my first time building and I've never bought a gpu before so I don't really know how to go about this. Also it seeems all GPUs have a 100 different versions, not just the 1660

Can I run a 1080ti with only one power connector?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:36 PM PDT

So I recently moved my system to a small form factor H200 case and I'm wanting to try to manage the cables a little better. So my question is; Can I use both headers from one cable to power my GPU? It requires an 8 & 6 pin, and one of my PSU cables has both of those.

GPU: EVGA 1080ti SC2 PSU: EVGA 750 GQ

    Thanks!

Will the Corsair H60 need a water pump and a tank?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:13 PM PDT

I've been told to get a water cooler for my pc to prevent overheating but I don't want to spend $300+ if I need a pump and a water tank as well. Will I need those to use the H60?

    Just a Generic List

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:12 PM PDT

So hey, I've got this list (original I am sure) and I'm just curious if I'm overspending or bottlenecking somewhere. I'm also definitely sure that I'm under doing the CPU cooler, so help would be appreciated. I'd prefer an AIO water cooler. I'm new to all this, so hey. Be light. (P.S, I'd prefer to keep it RGB, I want the performance boost)

    2K Gaming Build Review

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:01 PM PDT

Looking to get feedback on a build. Planning on getting the widescreen monitor for 3440x1440 gaming at 120Hz. Just looking to see if that monitor is still great for gaming or if there is something else I should consider and same for the entire build in general. This computer would be purely for gaming, no streaming or video editing so not worried about having tons of cores etc.

Ram is listed in the Pinnacle Ridge of the QVL list, does that mean it works?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 03:30 PM PDT

my ram g.skill aegis 3000mhz 16gb (F4-3000C16D-16GISB) is listed in the pinnacle ridge of the QVL list of the MSI B450 Gaming Plus (link to the list: https://de.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450-GAMING-PLUS#support-mem-13), does that mean it works with that motherboard?

i found some people suggesting that ram works, when it is on the QVL list, but there are always 3 lists there: summit ridge, raven ridge, and pinnacle ridge, what is the difference?

    1080p with a 2060 or 1440p with a 2070. $200 difference. Help me decide!

    Posted: 02 May 2019 01:11 PM PDT

Total noob here. I've almost settled on my build and will be purchasing the parts this weekend. The only thing haven't decided is whether I should go for 1080p or 1440p. Here are my possible builds, the only difference is the graphics card and monitor:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xZ2Qkd - 1440

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xqsRcY - 1080

I will mainly be using this for gaming. If I chose the 2070 I would be downscaling to 1080p for competitive games but I think it would be nice to have 1440p 60fps as an option. I also haven't had a computer in years so I honestly don't know what I want. Is 1440p worth an extra $200? I'm aware my build wouldn't do 1440p/144hz, but that's fine with me.
