This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I've got a unique opportunity to upgrade to a 1080 for free, but I need help with the cooling.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:17 AM PDT

Hello all! So currently I have a 1070 Sea Hawk EK X and a friend of mine has a "community rig" at his house that uses a Reference GTX 1080 among other donated parts from our friends group. He said that if I donate my 1070 I can upgrade to the 1080 he has in it since a friend with a mining rig he parted out gave a 1070Ti to my friend's dad, who then traded out his 1080 to the community rig.

One problem though, since I've had an AIO water cooling solution on my GPU now for the better part of two years I've really liked the aesthetic it gave my case as well as how quiet and cool it was during gaming. I can hardly hear it at all.

If I got the 1080 I'd like to convert it to being water cooled like my 1070.

Are there any recommended kits I could buy to do this that come with its own 120mm radiator?

Would it be more efficient to just do a custom loop altogether tying in my 6700K and GTX1080? I have a Corsair Crystal 570X case so I have more than enough room to house a radiator and custom loop but it's not something I've ever done before.

What would be the better solution here? Are there any kits like I'm describing or would it be custom loop or nothing?

This is territory I've never really ventured into before and I'd like some advice.

Edit: the reason I mention a custom loop is because both my CPU and GPU are currently water-cooled. So I have two radiators right now, one 240mm and one 120mm. I could fit 360mm (3x120mm) in the front no issues.

Did I receive a fake MSI RTX 2080?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:53 AM PDT

Just received my MSI RTX 2080 Ventus from eBuyer.com for £649, but I have my doubts as to whether it's real or not.

    1. It came with this thank you card. The text is blurry and the grammar is bad. It looks like a card you'd get from a Chinese eBay seller. I wouldn't expect this from a huge company like MSI.

    2. The card is missing the USB-C port and the rest of the ports are not in the same layout as any pictures on any website, including MSI's own website.

Is this card fake? If so, what are the next steps I should take?

Is a 550W PSU enough for an RTX 2080 GPU?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:44 AM PDT

Huge noob PC builder, I just recently started upgrading my first build that I did in 2017. I started by getting myself a 1440p 144Hz monitor, but my GTX 1060 just wasn't enough to use it to its full potential. I ended up pulling the trigger and ordering an RTX 2080 because I found a promo to get it a bit cheaper than usual... kind of on an impulse to be fair...

But now I'm wondering if my power supply will be able to handle my build?

PCPartPicker tells me I need a bit above 400W, but I have no idea if it is reliable, or if it's good practice to have a certain amount of spare wattage for example? In addition to being a noob at building a PC, I'm not very knowledgeable about electricity either...

Anyway the full build would be as follows :

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

If you find any anomaly (besides the poor choice of a motherboard considering my CPU and RAM, I learned about that recently) please do tell me!

    Two systems in one tower

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:36 AM PDT

Would it be possible to set up system with two mainboards, CPUs and GPUs (or one APU and one CPU + GPU) that use the same drives, front ports, PSU and case? Maybe one powerful system for gaming, work or editing and the other one for web browsing with little power consumption and a switch to choose wich one to boot up.

Lessons learned from installing a new cpu cooler for the first time.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:29 AM PDT

    • Never to install it into a motherboard with everything attached and inside the case. My hands couldn't get to the pins to lock them in place. Plus all the wires and RAM were blocking the way.

    • If possible, separate the heatsink and fan and install them separate. I just couldn't get to the pins on one side when the fan was blocking the way.

    • Dont press the cooler too hard, I accidentally bent the white part that was supposed to be extending on the back of the motherboard. Was wondering why it wasn't locking down.

    • Have a screwdriver set to take your case apart. I was too lazy to get everything out, so I unscrewed the top of the case which I should have done in the first place.

    • Store the screws in a specific paper/order. While screwing them back, I accidentally screwed in random open holes not meant for screws. I even accidentally removed the back case fan screws(which have springs... TIL).

    • Have a kid or someone with tiny hands on backup. I was so tired after work, I forgot to plug in the 12v for CPU and my hands couldn't reach in to connect them once the cooler was in place. So luckily my nephew was around who got the job done. Bless him.

    • Learned the value of having a good Case. My current case is a corsair carbide spec 03 which is pretty good for what's it worth, but I guess I never thought of doing upgrades like this. The cooler I bought was a deepcool gammaxx 400.

Took me only 3 hrs :) ......Having big hands is a serious pain for working with pc parts. Maybe next time I can reevaluate a lot of things I've mentioned here.

Posted on buildapcforme - and the reason im getting a PC and not a console is because my brother has a hard time making friends due to his stuttering and this makes him shy around new people and avoids talking at most times, and the only friends we had were back at his old school, and when we moved states last year, he hasn't made any friends for a year now and when we went to visit out old state last summer, he was genuinely happy meeting and playing on his friend's Pc which i havent seen in a while and his birthday is coming up and I decided to put all my savings for a Macbook into a PC as when I'm 18, I'll just work and get a macbook, and also get him a better PC. It should last about 2 years, and run the mentioned games . As long as it can run it, then its fine. Thank you guys for the help!,

Got a most likely dead GPU. What is the function of this broken off thing next to the PCI-E connector (merely stability?) and would it be safe to test the GPU in my system?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:27 PM PDT

I was always wondering if those things are an actually essential part of the GPU.

Right now I'm mainly trying to find out if testing the system with this GPU could fry my motherboard or something like that.

    Ryzen 5 1600 Vs Ryzen 3 2200G

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:06 PM PDT

Pros and cons of each please? I ordered a 2200g and then realized that the 1600 isn't too much more. I'll be gaming and might dabble in recording gameplay. Is the 1600 worth the trouble of returning the 2200g and the extra $30?

How is dust getting into my pc?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:43 AM PDT

I have dust filters on intake fans and I even put dust filters on the exhaust fans when the PC isn't on to prevent dust from going through the ventilation holes. When I open the side panel of my case (NZXT H500) I see dust on my hard drive and PSU cables

    M.2 vs USB Bluetooth Upgrade

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:12 PM PDT

So, as of right now, my PC doesn't have bluetooth. I've had my current setup for a while and never really bothered with it because I was fine having my controller plugged in and using wired periphs.

Recently though, I've been needing it more and need to have it now.

I've been trying to figure out which route to go with this, something internal vs USB dongle.

    Any recommendations?

Decorative CPU Cooler-is there any way?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:17 PM PDT

Hey all, I made a 2700x/1070 build about a year ago but used the cryorig H7 as the cooler for the 2700x instead of the wraith prism, and for the last year it's been collecting dust (well, it's mint condition/was still in box until yesterday so technically there was very little dust.) Now I could sell it, but honestly I thought it would be really cool if there was some way I could have the CPU cooler on in my desk as a LED, low RPM, decorative thing that just looks cool so I don't put the a e s t h e t i c s to waste. Is there any way I could do that without having it plugged into the motherboard (since it is on my table top after all)? Thanks!

Building a pc dedicated to playing just Tiger Woods 08'.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:57 PM PDT

I know this sounds strange, but I am looking to build a PC that will do nothing but run Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. I'll be running Windows 7 on it (Win 10 is a major PITA with this game) and will be running it with the widescreen fix at 1080p, but I'm also interested in knowing what specs I would need to run it at 4k.

The original specs for this game are obviously crazy low:

    • CPU SPEED: 2.4 GHz
    • RAM: 1 GB
    • VIDEO CARD: 128 MB 3D Video Card (NVIDIA GeForce 6800+ / ATI Radeon X800+)
    • TOTAL VIDEO RAM: 128 MB

See, I built a Golden Tee cabinet and have it set up to play TW08' and it is an absolute blast. The PC I have in it though is way over-powered as it runs my media server, file server, etc. It is hot and thus is loud as I have a lot of air running through it.

What I'm looking to do is replace that machine with the least expensive modern hardware needed to run this game. I don't want to throw a used laptop or desktop in there, I'd like to get something that should I choose to upgrade the game, I have that option.

I don't care of its ITX or full-size ATX, if I have to build it or if it's a mostly assembled HTPC. It would be awesome to find something with integrated graphics good enough to run it but expandable at a later date.

I'm just starting this journey and this community has always been amazing in the past, so I figured I'd turn here first.

    PC building newbie

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:35 PM PDT

I have done some research on all the required components and compabilities, but never got to the point of actually building a PC. Is this considered a good build overall and should I invest in a 1440p monitor or just stick to a 1080p 144hz monitor? Anything you would change on the build?

    Build:

    Ryzen 2600X

    Asus Prime B450

    GTX 1070 Ti

    16GB HyperX Fury 3200MHz

    250GB 860 EVO SSD

Anyone have any wireless headphone recommendations?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:25 PM PDT

I'm getting pretty tired of my wire getting tangled up or caught on my desk chair and am thinking about going wireless for over the ear headphones.

I currently have Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBL's. I'm not really a huge audiophile, but would like them to sound nice and be quality headphones.

My budget is in the $150 - $250 range. Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Corsair ML140mm PWM fans x4

    Samsung 860 Evo 500GB SSD

Can't actually use the PC yet until I get a new monitor, currently using the BenQ xl2411 which uses DVI. I'm looking at purchasing a Dell S2716DG 1440p 144hz monitor, which can come in a few days time if I buy it. Thanks for answering my many questions and helping me, it's been hard but a lot of fun.

Inexpensive ways to attach multiple internal hard drives to a computer

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:21 PM PDT

I've got about 5 SATA hard drives and I would like to use them as a sort of a storage "server", at this point I just hotswap them into a spare slot on my machine (case has an easy access port that allows me to do so quickly, without power off the machine) anytime I would like to use them. Is there a way to link them so that they could be accessed through a single SATA cable or USB3.0 or ethernet. Also, I am aware that this is a NAT and that there is a pleathora of dedicated hardware to do just that, but I was just wondering if there is less expensive way to hack something together that would do the job.
